《Beast God》Chapter 5

Clicking the Beast Warrior class nothing happened for a couple seconds. Just as Ben was about to ask the system what he did wrong.
[Bennett has chosen the golden Beast Warrior class. Requirements to acquire this class are as followed:
Kill a demonic beast at least 5 levels higher than yourself (1/1)
Tame a demonic beast with a higher level than yourself (1/1)
Achieve Basic Mastery with any weapon (0/1)
Time Limit- 1 month
Failure to complete these requirements will result in your death.]
"... MY DEATH!?" yelled Ben furiously. "What utter and total bullshit! I die if I don't get this class! It better be worth it!"
Ben calmed down, looking at the requirements, he had already completed two of them and only need one more to get this damn class.
'Seems that stupid cow had a high level. No wonder it almost killed me. So all that's left is to get basic mastery in a weapon? I guess mine will be sword but how to I achieve this?' Ben gave this some deep thought. He finally decided to just keep killing and using his sword until it came natural to him.
Him and Duke continued their way through the forest, killing goblins and other beasts that attacked them. Duke's level continued to climb as Bennett's stayed the same. Although Ben's level stayed the same, he continued to improve. He wasn't as awkward with his sword, his movements were much smoother and he didn't waste energy with unnecessary moves. He was able to kill quicker and more efficient.
Duke- Lvl 17

Duke's stats made Ben's jaw drop. He was over twice as powerful as Ben! He noticed that his intelligence didn't increase and wondered how he could increase it. It would be a lot easier to hunt if he could give Duke complex commands to help kill the prey.

Pushing it out of his mind, Ben still hadn't gained the sword skill he needed. Though he still had a month, the pressure was still there. Not for a second did he believe that the system was lying about killing him if he failed. He could tell that whoever programmed/ran this system had no qualms about killing a billion people, let alone him.
Reaching a small stream, Ben asked Duke to check their surroundings for any danger. Watching Duke take off, Ben approached the slow flowing creek. Looking down at his reflections ben let out a laugh.
His usual short blonde hair was messy with blood, mud and who knows what else caked in it. His green eyes were still bright and clear with dry blood splattered on his face. The creek was shallow enough to see the bottom, taking off his clothes ben jumped in and started washing his grimy body.
Watching the filth wash away from his body, Ben felt refreshed. After Duke made sure nothing dangerous was near, he jumped in and played around in the water.
"Hahaha you truly haven't changed buddy. You might be a wolf but to me you're still a puppy." Ben laughed, relaxing for the first time since the world went to shit.
It was short lived.
While Ben and Duke were playing in the water, upstream four men were walking towards them.
They were all dirty with clothes that looked closer to rags. They carried goblins clubs that still had blood on them, the leader of the group had pounded nails through his club making it more like a deadly mace. He was larger than other three and the others seemed to fear him.
"Oi Scar, you hear that?" the leader spoke to the smallest man. His face had a fresh cut across it that looked hideous.

"Sounds like someone or something is in the water. I'll check it out." The little man took off towards the sound, his class was thief and excelled at stealth.
"We may have new prey fellas," the leader gave them a cruel smile. The other two laugh wickedly. If you looked past the dirt and blood you could tell that these two actually looked very similar. They were brothers from the nearby town that just got released from prison.
"I hope it's another girl, the last one died way to quick." Dan, the older brother complained.
"At least you got a turn! You killed her before I had a turn, bastard." Jared, the older brother, swore.
"Enough you two, we are low on food at the moment so that's more important then you horny idiots." scolded Phil, the leader.
'He says that but it is still him who gets first crack at the women.' Dan complained in his head. It wasn't his size that made the brothers fear him. They could over power him if they worked together. It was what he kept in his coat, a hand gun.
Ben and Duke were leaving the water when Duke looked upstream and started growling.
"What is it boy?" Ben asked trying to see what had Duke upset.
Coming out of the trees Ben saw four men. They were a bit older than him and covered in filth. They looked dangerous and carried goblin clubs. The leader looked particularly menacing with his club that had nails sticking out from it. His long hair was disheveled and his face had a large sneer on it.
All of them weren't even looking at Ben, they were staring at Duke, they considered him the only threat here.
*Grrrrrrrr!*
Duke's growls got louder as the 4 men came closer. They stopped and gripped their weapons tighter.
"Quiet Duke." Ben whispered.
The men looked at Ben is shock.
"Hey brat, how'd you get that beast to listen to you?" asked Phil, still keeping an eye on the wolf.
"He's my friend, he trust me." Ben spoke evenly, even though his heart was pounding. He knew that these men weren't good people and was trying to leave peacefully.
"Trust eh? Good. Give him to me and I will let you live." smiling an evil grin, Phil took out his hand gun and pointed it at Ben.
Sweat had appeared on Ben's brow but he kept his voice calm, "Not going to happen, I suggest we both go our separate ways peacefully or I might ask Duke to rip out your throats." Ben tried to keep his voice calm but by the end of the sentence a cold edge was in his voice.
Duke was his friend and he would be damned if he gave him to a bunch of bastards like them.
*Grrrrr!*
Duke growl returned as in agreeing with Ben's words.
"Well lets see what's faster, your mutt or a bullet?" smiled Phil as he aimed at Ben.
"Yes, lets." whispered Ben.

Yin-Yang
Mages in North America seem to have it all – typically from well-off families, and able to manipulate their environment in ways most of the world would never believe. They don’t even have to bother with the mundane details of life like housework, thanks to their sensitives, who also make a useful source for extra magical energy. After all, sensitives have no use for it themselves, and if mages weren’t meant to make use of it, then the sensitives would obviously have some way to prevent that. That a mage can transform a sensitive physically, with no restrictions beyond overall mass and basic biological viability, whereas magic tends not to work directly on any other living thing, is only further proof. And look at the way they live on their own, barely a step above animals. It’s better for them to belong to a mage. Sensitives in North America live on the edge of society and survival – typically so paranoid they avoid hospitals and anything else that could lead to being tracked, many of them with little or no education and no legal identity or existence. Mages exist, and mages want sensitives for some reason, but no one ever comes back to explain what that reason is. Waiting every day for the hunters to notice them doesn’t lead to much motivation or hope for the future. And once they’re captured, they’re the property of someone with a terrifying amount of power over them. Anything is better than capture. Mages are born to be the masters, and sensitives are born victims. Or are they? Jax’s life is turned upside-down when he’s caught by the hunters and sold to a mage. Andreas is still mourning for his previous sensitive, though, unconsciously creating a difficult standard for Jax to live up to, all the more so while still struggling to come to terms with this new reality as Andreas’ sensitive. A runaway sensitive isn’t what Van expects at the mental health centre. Is this a hunter trap, set for him and the rest of the Donovan family by the hunters? The hunters would, after all, love to see them cross the line openly and finally do something they can be charged with. Either way, Miranda’s genuinely in trouble, and he can’t just abandon her to it. Snatching a sensitive out from under the hunters and hiding her is odd behaviour for a mage – but then, Catherine is an odd mage, living in disgrace in the old servants’ quarters of her grandmother’s house, responsible for cooking and housework. Lila owes Catherine her freedom; is there a way to help Catherine achieve her own, and at what price? Tension is building between traditionally-minded mages and those advocating change, and something has to break. *** Yin-Yang includes a small amount of profanity and no graphic sex or on-screen physical violence. However, sex and gender roles and relationships within the mage/sensitive subculture are non-traditional in mainstream North American terms. The key criterion in a primary relationship is not relative sex or gender, but the pairing of mage and sensitive; given the transformation of sensitives by their mages, physical sex is non-absolute for a sensitive, and gender identity can vary as in anyone else. *** *** The way mages treat sensitives is extremely varied and, in some cases is outright abusive. The struggle against that is pretty much the point of the book. It is NOT grimdark or misery-porn! However, if you will be triggered by this, please, don't read Yin-Yang! *** Complete stand-alone novel, 153K words! Also available on Scribble Hub and as a free ebook.
