《9001: A Dungeon Ship Odyssey》Chapter 17: Mad Researcher

Following the first day that Leah could manipulate magic and her heavy training she headed to Queror’s room. The reason is because she had the knowledge of a lot of theories of magic but was forgetting them so she wanted to record them and so she placed her hand on the book and after a moment it began to shine but it was much brighter than when Queror did it.

When Leah opened it she smiled and the book was split into sections of magic type.

Fire magic, Lightning mage, Water magic, Ice magic, Earth, Metal, Air, Sound, Lava, Sand, Steam. Mystic was even more varied, Psychic, Space, Divination, Summoning, Binding, Animation, Barrier, Gravity, and a few others.

Each section had different theory Leah had studied. Not all magic need direct manipulation such as Summoning, Binding and Animation. Summoning requires a ritual and a complex circle of magic. It's a vary unpopular type of magic but it can be used to summon monsters stored in your ship. A good method to set up quickly is holding around a magic scroll that contains the information for the summoning.

Divination is like Scrying magic or other magic that Tony would call parlor tricks following the old mystics who ‘talk with the dead’ or use cards to see the destiny of a person.

The reason why Leah had studied so many types of magic is because once she realized she couldn’t do magic normally she gave up on her affinities and spread her knowledge and planned to use equipment for magic. This would give her the title of a Tech mage who is someone that uses technology completely to perform magic. Now though she could put all this knowledge both the true manipulation magic and the other she learned to practice.

At her side Queror looked curiously at the book and she noticed him looking.

“Curious?” She asked.

He looked at her and nodded and she thought a moment before flipping through the pages to the beginning which showed the category. ‘Basics of Magic Control, Manipulation and Spell casting’. This was the very basis of the basic which she never got past so she took the book and called him over to the table while holding the book and with her teaching him while reviewing for her own good she started learning.

Two days later Leah announced they would go to Rokita instead of Spenolif.

“Why?” The three asked.

“It’s easier to find a broader range of people there. Also the Adventurer’s Association there is an HQ and it has a service to help recruit adventurers for crews. Most people on the extremely long list come from every city within 5,000 km around Rokita who wanted to join a crew and wanted to adventure in space. This will make recruiting much easier since, if they accept, the Association will get incontact with them for us and then pass us the contact information and we can recruit them ourselves going to get them. With our ship it would take at most a day or two to reach any city within range.” Leah said.

“And what about mana that I need for upgrades?” Tony complained.

“Well isn’t it obvious, we have three crew members and training mana capacity is simply wasting all our mana. We simply need to give you our mana. For me I can even almost empty my reserve to train my capacity. It is slower than hunting but that is secondary since we need to build at minimum an 8 man crew with the basic stations covered. Security, Mechanic, Cook, Bioengineer, Farmer, Technician, Medic, and me captain. Counting you, Tony, we have four stations set, Security is Mirella, Cook is Nelim, Captain is me and you are Technician who is in other words the programming specialist. We lack Bioengineer who knows how to make the clones properly and mess with genetics, Farmer to properly raise livestock and vegetation, a medic to heal be it through magic or medicine and a Mechanic for damage repairs that you might not be able to fix through just your system.” Leah said.

“So it’s like that.” Mirella muttered. “I see no point why not, you were born in Rokita so maybe you could even invite some friends.”

Leah smiled ruefully which spoke volumes, “At best I can see if my dormitory room mates are willing.” She said wryly.

The other two somewhat understood the meaning, the were friends but not to a huge amount and knowing about Leah’s past somewhat showed that ‘problems’ could easily arise.

“If you're that worried then just do like you said, what is there to bitch about. I did a check and found Teleportation pad, there is just enough room on the second floor with the gym and bio lab for it. The cost of the cheapest is 95,000 mp and it can is good for simple teleportation within a distance of 50 km. We currently have 32k so if you want an easy travel you should probably focus on feeding me mana for a few days.” He said.

This was obviously said due to the fact that Rokita is extremely huge and the air space is quite restricted. If they had a teleportation pad all the crew would get a special bracelet that lets them teleport directly to the ship and out.

“Well we can take it slow, I can fill about 900 mp every three hours so I can do it four times a day so 3600 mp with the first group of imps already passed but their offspring born these will last a week but they aren’t bright enough to use magic but with a command I can use a few to feed magic. Queror is making progress so that is another 500 mp so we can get at least 5000 each day.” Leah said.

“I can help.” Nelim said and nodded.

Leah nodded and continued for a little while. Soon the ship came to life and so they headed back to Rokita to recruit the remaining positions needed for a crew.

Pelonius Biswal saw over his worktable in his lab/room. Sparks would fly every few moments as he used some tools to build an important part of a completely technology based laser pistol.

BAM! POW!

When the door slammed open he was startled and the tool sparked where it shoulded ruining the delicate piece making several hours of work go down the drain.

He turned around to see his parents. They wore a frown on their face.

“Is there something you require of me, father?” He asked in a wholly bored fashion.

“I want to know what the hell is THIS!” His father shouted and walked forward before slamming a device that opened up into a very large list of purchase orders. Pelonius read the list.

It was a detailed purchase of all Recruit Class Research type ship that Pelonius had purchased. Following the purchase of the actual ship came the equipment installed inside plus the fuel and so on.

“This is my purchase for a ship.” He said nonchalantly.

“What is this joke! What do you plan to do!” His father shouted.

“Isn’t it obvious, I’m gonna leave. Research in a stuffy lab is all fight and all but there isn’t much else except making weapons for your contractors. I want to research my own field in private silence of space.” He said.

The eyes of his father were burning, his third son was his prodigy and was the best weapons developer yet for him to lose such a person because of a whim for privacy was too much of a joke that this man could take.

“I won’t allow this!” The man said.

“What is there to allow? I am already 27 year old, I used my own money to purchase the ship. Everything on it belongs to me not you including my own neck. You are my father, not my master.” Pelonius said getting up and take a rag before removing his glasses. “You are influential within our home because you keep us at a short leash. Even Leah who you threw away you want to control.”

“Don’t you dare mention the name of that abomination in my house!” His father spat those words. The number of conflicts this father and son had because of Leah can’t be counted which goes to show the amount of love and hate each one has for her. “This… joke you're pulling. Its because of her isn’t it? Your are still in that insupportable rebellious stage where you wanted to care for that thing.”

Pelonius finished cleaning his glasses and turned. The dirty cloud on his glasses was completely cleaned off and the eyes looking through them burned with rage.

“Leah isn’t a thing, she isn’t a monster and she isn’t an animal. Your paranoia of her only ruined her childhood, I am sick and tired of staying in this suffocating house. You can use my brothers and sisters as technology producing monkey’s since they like it so much but I have already reached my limit. Since all the things in my room I purchased with my money I will also take my own equipment with me.” He said and pressed walked to a computer.

“You will do no such thing! If you leave this house you can consider all your possibilities as a research doomed!” His father shouted.

“Pelonius please calm down and think of this rationally!” the man’s mother said.

As they spoke the furniture began to shine before they seemingly transform into numerous cubes the size of dice. As for the hidden laboratory, Pelonius has already transferred everything to his ship and installed them into the biolab that was already there completely reforming the lab into his own just like the room looked. There was nothing left including his 10 years of research into cursed weapons. All that is left is a few piles and such which followed the solutions.

As he gathered the furniture the remaining consoles and things also converted into these dice.

“You have had these… things ready just to leave!” Pelonius’s father shouted.

These dice are a technology that implements space magic to transport heavy items and furniture.

“Only a close minded person like you would not implement such convenient technology such a space magic type technology. Do you really like having so many sweaty mean moving around your equipment with the danger of it breaking.” Pelonius said shaking his head and picking up the rest and putting it in his pocket. “As for my career as a researcher, I don’t need your warning father. The reason I am getting my own ship and crew is so that I can research for myself while being able to do field tests personally. As for money, there are dungeons and countless rookies needing a crew as a supporter with drones for backup. Just the fact that I could travel and get monster material to make materials for weapons is already a plus for me.” He said looking at this father.

He looked at the weapon on the table, “Oh right, you can keep that, I have no use for an unfinished piece of junk like that when I can make better when I have privacy.” He said and walked out of the room.

“Pelonius! I will not let you leave!” his father said walking behind the young man.

The young man still casually walked through the halls of their family and soon the maids and butlers looked at them.

The two old researchers shouting at the young one that kept shaking their arms off and kept walking.

When he finally reached the door and grabbed it the father snapped.

“If you walk out you can forget about getting support from us! You won’t ever be a Biswel as well!” The man shouted.

Pelonius stopped and the mother seem to brighten up as she thought that this had worked and began to calm down but when she looked her son looked back. On eye was on them while the other was hidden under the glare of the light hitting it.

“Perfect. You can call me Pelonius Biloni from now on then.” He said with a smile.

He opened the door and a sudden burst of wind came as the research ship was flying in front of the house.

He looked up, “AI teleport me up.” He said.

“Affirmative sir!” A female voice called from the ship from the AI. One piece of equipment he had installed was a teleport pad from the get go to save the trouble.

The light formed around him and he didn’t look back as he vanished and appeared on the ship. “Go to the ship parking.” He said.

“Yes sir.” the AI said and the ship started up and flew off.

Pelonius slowly walked through the ship. It was a wider model compared to Leah’s explorer model but similar to it the ship had three floors but the focus was of research having a biolab already built in the second floor. It was also twice as big as the explorer which is why it could fit the lab plus a habit for living being experiments.

He walks through the ship and stops in front of a door which opens. Within the room was a single large cylinder similar to his biolab ones.

He walks up the stairs next to it and puts his hand into an inner pocket of his dirty white coat and pulls out a bright cheerful pink marble sized gem. He casually tosses it into the chamber and it stays suspended in the air.

“Commencing core subjection…” the AI announces.some pink bolts of lightning strike out but do nothing more. The core reacts sending out bolts of its own but it soon stops.

“Core subjection complete. Core system online. Core conscious has been linked to the ship. Claim of the ship releasing now.” The AI announced.

Suddenly a ripple that seemed like space itself was rippling happened but to a human's eye it was hard to distinguish but Pelonius barely noticed and looked curious.

The next moment he heard a voice of a girl, “Buhu~! That hurt!” The crying came and soon a blurred hologram of a girl with a sort of mage like outfit appeared.

“Why is your hologram so blurred?” Pelodius asked.

“Holowhat?” She asked.

“AI aid the core with her hologram.” Pelodius said.

The blurred image cleared up and a girl that looked between 12 and 14 appeared dressed in a mage robe stood before him. Her hair was long and curly and on her head was a witch’s hat.

“So who are you?” She asked confused about her surroundings.

“I am captain of this ship. My name is Pelodius Biloni, what is yours?” He asked.

The girl looked at him from top to body and puffed out her strangely overly large chest and with a proud smile she began a grand introduction. “Puny human mortal! I am the great Witch of the Florivine Forest, bow before the noble and glorious Adalwolfa Bon Bibonina.” She said in a pompous manner while pointing at him like a princess does to a servant.

Pelonius looked at her for a long moment, he was running the name of the forest through his mind. He had been to quite a number of planets during his school years and also had access to knowledge on countless colonized planets but the name eluded him.

“Never heard of you or that forest.” he said bluntly.

“WHAT!” The girl said in shock.

She seemed to become a bit depressed upon hearing this but then she looked around. “So although that demon that captured and tortured me told me I was some kind of dungeon creature or something mind explaining what contraption we are in?” she asked and vanished and appeared all over the room.

“We are in my ship, I am a scientists.” He replied.

“What is a scientists?” She asked.

Pelonius’s brow twitched as he heard the question, “The vender wasn’t kidding when he said the trained cores are a gamble.” He thought for a long time searching for the mage terms for all the magic type researchers. “I am similar to an alchemist or druid. I study nature but due to not having the power of magic I used technology.” He said.

“Heh~? So this is the technology that demon spoke of. In my 874 years I have lived this is the first time I have seen such a strange contraption with so many strange numbers and floating windows in my life.” She said and froze. “Is this thing flying?” She asked.

“Yes, this is a ship, you as a core, will supply the mana to build this into a ship that can travel through the vacuum of space.” He said.

“Space?” She said tilting her head.

“Space is off planet, we fly through the sky to other stars.” He said and her jaw dropped. He sighed and walked out. She followed behind him. “AI where is Leah?” He asked.

“Currently on the move, destination Rokita.” She replied startling the girl.

“Good, let us go wait for them at the docks.” He said.

“Yes sir.” The AI replied and the ship headed off.

He turned back to the little girl. “So are you good at gathering mana?” He asked.

“I am a great witch what do you think! But this world is strange, I have been trying to absorb using my masters mana cultivation art but no matter how I try it is slow and I can barely pull in mana.” She said.

“As expected, the holder is restricting your capacities. I will need to get that upgraded eventually.” he said but shrugged. “AI once you land, monitor Leah, when she lands tell me. Also be on the lookout for my father's grunts.” He said and turned and took a step before stopping. “Also bring up the core purchase list, I want to see what is available.” He said and walked out and entered his lab where all the containers with the strange wands and some with small black pieces.

He got to work while overlooking the system and noting everything while waiting for the arrival of his little sister.
