《Blood and Honor: Ascension》Chapter 7- Reluctent Companion

I watched as the pile of bodies burn in front of me, it had been a close call, but superior tactics and complete surprise had won out in the end. Twenty-seven captives had been freed, all in various stages of abuse. Yet a few healing spells and a few drops of blood here and there had seen them physically restored if not emotionally healthy. "You did well, thank you," Charon stated as he appeared beside me.
I handed over the lantern that the god had provided causing him to smile as he waved me off. "It is yours, as a young god you will need all the help you can get, and that is a pittance to what some of my lesser brethren have. Be wary of any god Jacob Longstrider." Charon warned me and I nodded my head in acknowledgment.
I waved at the survivors as they fled north, "Can you do anything to help them?" I asked the other god.
"They are the living, I am concerned about the dead. You have done well young Blood God, you have to learn to pick and choose your fights. Help those you can. Remember this lesson." Charon relayed to me before disappearing again and leaving a circlet made of bone, gold, silver, and studded with ruby's laying on the ground. I stopped and picked it up as the Quest notification popped up.

I tossed the crown into my inventory, I didn't need it for where I currently was in the middle of nowhere. If I went into a city, it would be a far different story altogether, it would attract too much attention. As I was my anonymity was my greatest strength currently. "So you are a god?" I whirled around and glared at the Wood Elf as she dropped out of Stealth nearby.
I sighed as I relaxed my muscles and lowered my knife and canceled the Fireball but did not relax too much, "Shouldn't you be on your way home?" I asked her as I sorted through the gear I had acquired from all the raiders I had killed. Most would be useless and I would sell, but I found a couple of pieces worth saving.

"You didn't answer the question." the Wood Elf pressed.
I turned and glared at her, "I saved your life, I don't owe you anything. Go home, live your life, and recover from this experience." I told her causing her to frown.
"My family never came for me. They had me about two weeks to find me and rescue me, does that strike you that they care that I am alive or dead?' the Wood Elf asked and I sighed in frustration. 'I promise to watch your back. I am a Ranger, so I can help you navigate the wild and you seem more like an Assassin than a Ranger or Scout so you will have a tougher time surviving out here." I frowned at her response and ignored her.
"I can't look after you. Coming with me is almost an assurance that you will die horribly. You sure you want to follow me?" I asked her as I donned my new armor and sheathed my new dagger missing Moonlight once again.
"Opposed to what I faced here? At least with you, I have a fighting chance.' she told me as she walked around placing herself in front of me. 'I am Lia Silverwood of the Black Woods. You are a Blood God named?" Lia prompted as I glared at her.
"You can call me Kevin, ok?' I responded as I tossed her some leather armor, bow, and arrows causing her to smile as she quickly donned them.
"A god named Kevin, not intimidating." I snorted in amusement at her comment, I agreed with her, but that wasn't the point.
"I said you could call me Kevin, I never said it was my name, but I think you caught that little fact.' I told her as I picked a direction and started walking. 'So besides not wanting to go home, why are you following me?" I asked her as I followed a little dirt trail out of the burning wreckage that had been the raiders' camp.
Lia laughed lightly as she followed in my wake, "Are you ever going to tell me your name?" the Wood Elf asked and I smirked at her frustration. I had cleared Level ten and all branches of the Pyromancer Skill Tree were unlocked, but I would wait until I stopped for the night to look up everything.
"Ignorance is bliss, trust me on this," I told her as we entered the dense woods.
"Can I ask where we are going?" Lia replied and I frowned thinking of needing a sword.
"Do you know of any blacksmiths you trust that are extremely skilled? That can repair a weapon." I asked her and she frowned.
"There is a small commune not far from here. There is a smith there that I trust. If he cannot do it, he will know someone trustworthy to do the job." Lia replied and I stopped as I studied her.
Could I trust her..."Very well. How much will it cost?" I asked her as she led us towards the northwest.
Lia smiled over her shoulder, "For me, nothing. For you...depends on if he sees it as a challenge or not. The fact you saved my life will way in your favor though." the Wood Elf replied as she pushed herself too a jog and I matched her pace.
"How long will it take us to get there?" I asked, excited to have Moonlight repaired if possible.
Lia frowned as she manipulated her interface, "A day, two at most. If you can keep up." she smirked as she closed out her interface and laughed. The arrogance of youth...I smiled as I sped up the pace causing her laughter to cut off as she raced to catch me.

A Virtual Invasion
An invasion from another dimension is shut down by an Empire's traitor and the world has a scant few decades to build the strength to resist a multidimensional Empire. How will the world fair when no one even knows its doom is one barred gate away? Fortunately, the traitor has a plan. Maybe with a bit of luck and planning, he can build a force to defend the world without anyone realizing it. Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.

The system isn't a game. It's the rules for the universal operating system that all things work inside. Note: You do not need to read the first book in the series to read this book.
