《Testament of Ezra》45. Reaper

Grimm and Virion moved around at incredible speeds. No bystander could keep up with them. Each strike delivered shattered the ground beneath them.
“You’ve gotten stronger, V” Grimm said when they stopped before each other.
“Don’t call me V.” Virion threw is fist at Grimm. It generated a massive wave that crack the ground when Grimm blocked the attack with his scythe. However he didn’t let up. He continued to bring fast punches towards the large weapon in an attempt to break it.
Grimm broke his flurry, and swung the scythe quickly. Virion flipped backwards. Once on his feet he immediately struck the ground. It cracked immensely and started to sink. Grimm jumped away from the danger and was in awe at how much damage Virion caused. He was able to make a near massive creator just from that attack alone.
“I mean it. Truly. Which is why we shouldn’t fight here?” Grimm said to the captain from across the crater.
“Sorry. Got a job to do.” Virion shrugged and replied.
“You and I both know that you don’t give a shit about this. You’ve already made it clear what your here for. So let’s postpone this. You get all your men and leave. Then i’ll come visit you, and we can have our proper duel. I know that’s what you want.” Grimm reaffirmed the old friend.
“Why so you can embarrass me in front of the whole empire again. Grimm returns after 2 decades just to kick the shit out of Virion. That’ll be the story. We’re doing this now.” Virion stated. Grimm stared at the man angrily.
“Fine. We only have about 5 minutes, but i still have a cannon to take care of so…..” Grimm said as he turned to the other team still fighting. “KATREENA! GRANIUS!” He yelled. The two took quick notice of the man. Grimm pointed up to the cannon. “Both of you combined should have the physical strength to hold the cannon up. Aim it at the mountain. Nicholai’s orders!”
The tall girl and man looked at each other then began running towards the ice pillar. Virion noticed Katreena and her bright green hair.
“That’s Katorn’s daughter.” Virion said. “I’ll have to kill her too. Once i’m done with you” Grimm flinched at the words.
“What!?” Grimm yelled.
“She betrayed the empire. She came here to warn everyone about our invasion. That makes her a traitor.” Virion said, before Grimm’s scythe came down at him. He evaded then struck the man in the face, creating another shockwave right as his fist lay on Grimm’s face. Sending the man into the ground. He looked to Grimm on the floor, who was smiling happily.

“Impressive V.” Grimm said. Virion quickly defended himself, for Grimm had returned to his feet and dashed by with his scythe to strike Virion in an instant. “Since you want my undivided attention. I’ll give it to you for a bit. Let’s get a drink after this?”
“KAL! Stop those two from getting to the cannon!” Virion orders his second in command. Kal saw the two already climbing the ice pillar. The knight let out a sigh knowing he would have to start climbing as well. “And you! Stop acting like this is the old days. AND WHY DO YOU STILL HAVE THAT DUMBASS HAIRDO!?”
“Oh I like it.” Grimm said in response to Virion’s critique of his large pigtails.
“If that’s settled.” Grimm automatically readied himself for the next attack. He swung his scythe, and generated a massive mountain of ice before Virion. The captain jumped back from the attack. He took his axe and imbued his Force into his next move. A reat slash was sent at the mountain, splitting it from its sides. Making the top part fly upward. He and Grimm jumped into the ice still on the ground and ran at each other. Their blades clashed wildly. Virion sliding around Grimm at every chance. While Grimm swung rapidly. Each movement and clash made the ice below them crack more and more.
However the other half of the structure they fought on was still descending down to them. As it came down at it’s great pace, they continued to fight. Just before it reached right before their heads. The two brought their weapons together. Which released a Force wave that shattered the ice above and below them. The two fell through.
Virion put his hands together. “Fracture Sphere!” A spherical area was quickly formed around Grimm. Then simultaneously let out hundreds of cracking shock waves inside the sphere. Grimm took the damage and was flown back, as was Virion.
“Dammit. He really has gotten better. I still wonder. What is it he wanted to tell me.”Grimm thought to himself as he stood up. Once back to his feet Virion was staring him down. The two refused to hesitate and let the other get the first move. They rushed together, and this time used their fist instead of their weapons. Trading blows towards each other.
Grimm stepped back and summoned dozens of ice spears. He flung them at Virion. Yet the captain predicted the move. He pushed his hands out and released a powerful wave of Force. It destroyed the ice spears and sent Grimm hurling back. As he did, Grimm saw his scythe on the ground. He grabbed it with one hand, while still in the air he held it behind him. Virion felt it becoming incredibly cold. Making him know exactly what Grimm was planning to do next.

“Passing Blizzard!” Grimm yelled, sending a wave trail of ice towards Virion. Before the attack was even halfway to the captain, he had already ran towards it. His fist struck the ice, and he dashed right through. Completely obliterating Grimm’s strike all entirely. Leaving him right before the tall man. Where he would rise up to leave a direct hit to him.
But Grimm had his backup plan. Another attack had been done in secret. A large frozen spike. He sent it down on the captain as his fist reached his face. Virion was sent into the ground. However he was uninjured. The man caught the spike at the last second with one hand. Grimm walked away as Virion tossed the spike aside.
“Impressive. You’re actually able to hold your own against me.” Grimm complemented.
“Stop doing that. I don’t need any approval from you.” Virion furiously said getting off the ground.
“Then what is it that you need. You really didn’t come all this way just to kill me. Did you?” Grimm asked, beginning to get annoyed with the man.
“I DID. BECAUSE I HATE YOU! I”VE ALWAYS HATED YOU!” Virion screamed. “I came here to die! Ever since you’ve left, and even when you were around. I was seen as less than nothing because of you. All everyone did was compare us. I never escaped it. And here you fucking stand. Taking all of this as some day in the park!”
“I wanted to see my friend again.” Grimm said.
“Then you should have come home!”
“You know Virion. If you spent half as much time complaining about me as you did training. Then maybe you wouldn’t be like this. Do you know how many hours I waded through to become the person I am. I didn’t sit back and wait for someone else. And I damn sure for well didn’t care about the words of others! You’re so damn focused on people who don’t give half a shit about you. What is it you even want!?” Grimm questioned harshly. Virion began to cry.
“I...I just wanted people to care about me. I just wanted to feel like I belonged. But everyone went out of their way to make sure that didn’t happen. It’s all because of you! Then….THEN! You took her from me! The one person who cared about me!” Grimm knew who Virion spoke of. A witch that Virion loved, yet Grimm married.
“I’m sorry-” Grimm started before being cut off.
“No you aren’t! Everyone knows you never really loved her! You just took her from me because you knew I wanted her!” Virion screamed.
“That’s not true!”
“BULLSHIT! Don’t give me that crap. The last chance I had at anything and you took that from me!” Virion continued to cry. Grimm let his head down in despair over his friends emotions. Yet he wanted to counsel him. Just like the boys he trained. Those who were once lost in the world. Grimm helped them find their place in the world. He saw another opportunity in his friend before him. So he took a step forward, trying to reach his friend. “Which is why I killed her.”
Grimm stopped. Everything else went completely silent. He fixated himself on Virion, and chose to not believe the man's words.
“While you were away. Shortly after your son was born. The entire empire was in a desperate battle. So I seized my chance. I just...did it. I saw no chance in living after that day. So. I just did it. I wanted to stay with her in the afterlife. But then Harrison showed up, and saved everyone. So I killed a Hulion soldier and placed him in your home.” Virion explained everything. He then looked up. Grimm was tearing up heavily through his left, undamaged eye. “There. Now my conscious is clear. I can die happy.”
A large wave of energy flew through the whole Freelands. Everyone took notice of the power. Grimm was it’s source. A dark and deathly aura surrounded him. Snow began to rage out from the man and aura. It started to cover everything growing ever more intense. Virion stood unfazed by it all.
“That’s it. Grimm. The one thing that separates you from everyone else.” The aura slowed, the reformed itself into a large towering dark figure in the form of a reaper. It stood behind Grimm, a large smile on its face and a scythe leagues large than the one Grimm dropped on the floor. “I’m sorry Grimm. And Aushley. I’m glad. I could see your face one last time.”
The reaper swung it’s scythe down. A dark slash hit Virion. It left a massive scar on the man, trailing his whole body. Going from the base of his left foot and over his right eye, and splitting part of his skull open. All that was left for the captain was to fall down on his stomach, and die with a smile on his face.

Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.
