《The baby swap》Chapter 50: A misplacement

Babies don't just go missing and then magically reappear. How could this have happened? That was the answer we all wanted to know.

I tried to think of a reasonable explanation for how this could have happened, but I couldn't. Either the baby was raised from the dead or the nurse lied to us. Either way, none of it made sense to us.

Rafael didn't explain much to us on the call, just that we needed to be there immediately. We drove to the hospital at lightning speed, throughout the car ride, I was shaking. I couldn't believe any of this.

Alex and I anxiously waited in the doctor's office for him to clear up the situation.

Alex was pacing the room while I anxiously tapped my foot.

I couldn't take the suspense.

When the doctor walked in, we immediately turned our attention to him.

He looked more anxious than we were, sweat streamed down his brows as he readjusted his glasses.

He walked in quietly and sat at his desk.

"We are so sorry for the pain and confusion we caused you." He started.

We waited anxiously for his explanation.

"There happened to be a mistake, a misplacement. They confused your baby for someone else's, there happened to be another child who was also sent to the NICU. He was the one that died. It was only when Rafael, your half-brother I believe, came around asking questions that we managed to pick up on the mistake. We still can't explain how this could have happened." He rumbled.

I froze as I listened to his explanation, 'my baby is alive' My mind registered. If this whole incident hadn't been so traumatizing, it would almost be funny. The only reason he even existed was because of a misplacement, now this.

Alex snapped me out of my thoughts as he slammed his fist into the table.

"For the last three days we thought our baby was dead and this is the best explanation you can give us?" Alex spoke.

"We are so sorry sir. We keep bands on the children to identify them, the band must have slipped off and for some reason, we weren't able to pick it up a lot sooner. We are a little short-stuffed here and the hospital doesn't have a lot of resources that it needs to function. These mistakes don't usually happen." He tried to assure us.

"So, if you hadn't picked this up someone else would have taken our child?" Alex spoke.

"No sir, he has been in the NICU since. He is doing fine now but we haven't allowed any visits. It's possible that we could have picked this up before we even discharged him." The doctor explained.

My poor baby was all alone for the last three days.

"Can we meet him?" I asked instead.

"Sure ma'am," He spoke trying to master a smile.

Just then, the doorknob turned.

Rafael walked in, holding a baby in his arms.

My baby.

Rafael smiled walking towards us. "Here you go," he spoke, holding his hands out to hand me the baby.

I froze for a second not knowing how to respond. I waited nine months for this moment, in the last three days this moment seemed impossible, but it had arrived.

Without any more hesitation, I held out my hands, welcoming my baby into my arms.

His matching dark grey eyes to Alexander's stared back at me. He rested peacefully in my arms as he slowly closed his tired eyes. I stared at him mesmerizing every single one of his features. He looked more like Alexander than me.

I couldn't help but cry as I held him in my arms.

"He is perfect," Alex read my mind.

Looking at him, everything I've been through was worth it.

"I'm going to give you guys a moment," Rafael smiled.

He excused himself and stepped out of the room.

"Hi," I whispered to my baby holding his little fisted hand.

He was so small.

The doctor remained still, quietly fading into the background.

As much as we wanted to stare at our baby the entire day, we still had a situation to deal with.

I felt sorry for the lady who had lost her baby, throughout these days she had the hope that her baby was alive but now after this, I wonder how he was doing.

"You are going to make sure that it never happens to anyone's child ever again," Alex spoke calmly. His mood had completely changed.

"We are so sorry sir; our team is doing an investigation to make sure it will never happen again." The doctor answered.

"I'm going to donate to this hospital. I'm willing to give this place any fund needed to not only make sure that it's the best in the city but so that you have every equipment and the best doctors running this place."

Alex continued.

The doctor looked at Alex in shock, I couldn't believe it either.

From the man I used to know, Alex had quite the transformation. I would have expected that he fired everyone and made sure they never worked again, but he changed.

I smiled looking at my baby in my arms.

TWO WEEKS LATER

I held Jake in my arms as I stared at the view of the ocean.

Everything has been going great and I couldn't be happier.

Alex transitioned a lot easier into parenthood than I did. Being a dad made him more controlling, sometimes I worry but I think it's because of the incident that happened. It great seeing him and how he is with the baby but sometimes it gets a little too much, especially when he starts telling me how to hold my baby or when I have to listen to that stupid alarm to remind me of every time I need to breastfeed the baby.

Everyone else has only got the chance to meet Jake on a video call, Alex turned out to be the paranoid parent and decided that he was too young for everyone else to meet him because he didn't want him catching any germs. Before I could protest, I was offered a trip to Greece, where we were staying at the moment.

We went on the trip with just the three of us, it's also great because now we know how we interact with each other without the maid. It also made me realize how untidy I was and how much of a neat freak Alex is. He does all the cleaning without complaining, who would have guessed that he knows how to use a broom, let alone what it even looks like. Maybe it was just one of those things I misjudged him for.

"Can you imagine, the stock prices skyrocketed when everyone thought I was dead. People really hate me." Alex spoke walking into the room. He had his eyes fixed on his phone screen.

He placed his phone in his pocket.

"I'll put Adrian to his sleep," Alex spoke holding out his arms.

"His name is Jake," I corrected, again. I handed the baby to him.

Just like a lot of things we couldn't agree on the name.

"How could you name our son that? Look at his cute little face." He held Jake as if he was Simba from the Lion king.

"Did you carry this baby for nine months?" I reminded him.

"You are always going to have the upper hand on me aren't you," Alex smirked.

"Yap," I answered him. "And the middle hand, and every other hand in between." I smiled.

He sighed.

"He already gets to keep your last name, the least I can do is name him," I argued. "I'm going to take a nap for a little bit," I spoke walking past him.

While Alex was on father duty, I could get some sleep too myself.

~*~

I must have overslept, when I finally woke up it was already dark.

Something felt wrong, I hadn't slept for this long in such a long time.

Alex was in the Kitchen making dinner, with Jake laying happily in his swing.

"Why didn't you wake me," I asked stepping into the kitchen.

"You looked so peaceful in your sleep. Besides, I'm almost done making dinner." He answered. He mixed the contents in the pan. He then transferred the food into the bowl.

The table was ready and set, filled with different dishes of lasagne, lobster, steak, salads and plenty of other dishes you would like twice about buying in a restaurant because it's way too expensive he couldn't have done all of this.

I couldn't help but stare at him, what had happened to him? A few months ago, I didn't see him as the kind of guy who would do any of this.

"I can't believe you did all of this," I spoke, pulling out a chair at the table with Jake in my arms.

"Wow, I can't believe you would doubt me in front of our son. It's not like I spend the last four hours cooking," He spoke faking heartache with his hand on his chest. "Our baby can see how ungrateful you are acting right now." He joked.

I laughed. "Don't be such a baby, I already have one I don't need another one," I spoke.

"Not ever," He spoke with a more serious expression.

"I have to take care of him, how else will I give him the attention he needs" I answered.

"I thought I was the one smothering him," He answered.

He dished a plate for me as I instructed him on what I wanted to eat.

"I was just kidding; I only made the lasagne. I couldn't risk it, so I had some food brought in by the private chef." He answered.

"And I am completely surprised by that," I answered sarcastically.

I took a fork full of lasagne, it was delicious.

"What do you think about Jake-Adrian Forbes?" He asked.

"We are not hyphenating his name, that would just make it sound weird," I asked.

"Come on, you have to admit it has a nice ring to it." He persisted.

Maybe just a little bit.

"I'll sleep on it," I answered instead.

"Yes," He raised his hand high in victory.

We spent the rest of dinner in silence, I didn't want to focus on anything besides the food.

"I'm going to go and change into something more comfortable," I excused myself from the table.

I handed Jake to him.

Usually, we would watch a movie or do something together until one of us falls asleep, usually me. I was currently introducing him to the world of K-pop which he seemed to have a lot of opinions about.

I ran up the stairs to my closet, I picked a pair of grey sweatpants and a matching top from the closet. That way if I fell asleep, I wouldn't have to worry about changing.

When I returned, it was only Alex in the room.

"Where is Jake?" I asked searching the room.

"Come on, I have a surprise for you." Alex held out his hand.

I followed him confused as to what was happening.

"I need you to close your eyes," He spoke.

Because he knew I would be tempted to open my eyes, he covered them with his hands.

He led the way guiding me slowly, making sure to be careful of the stairs.

Walking with your eyes closed is a lot harder especially when the place is so big and has so many stairs.

"Just one more step," Alex spoke as I carefully took another step.

By the feel of the cold air against my skin, I could tell we were outside.

He slowly removed his hands from my eyes as I took in my surroundings.

The backyard was now decorated with lights and a pathway covered by roses was created.

A couple of hours ago, all of this wasn't there.

I noticed the extensive sign reading: Will you marry me? Near the edge of the garden.

In between the sign, Jake was happily laying in his stroller.

I covered my mouth in shock.

Was this happening?

I turned around to find Alex on his knees, holding out a box with a magnificent, pink diamond ring inside of it.

"Zoe, since I first met you, my life has never been the same. You showed me how to truly be happy and not because of all the material things I had. You changed me and I never want to be the person I was. Will you do me the honour of becoming my wife, I promise to prove to you every single day just how much I love you." He spoke.

I froze not knowing how to respond. Was this happening?

Our relationship has been great, but I didn't think it would lead to a marriage proposal this quickly. Maybe we were moving too fast.

But who was I kidding, I was completely and utterly in love with him. I couldn't imagine loving anyone else this much.

He stared at me waiting for a response, he was trying to remain calm, but the anticipation was killing him.

"Yes," I exclaimed.

He quickly rose to his feet and pulled me into a hug and swept me off my feet. It took a while before he let me go.

He slid the ring onto my finger.

I think it costs a lot more than everything I owned.

"Next time you plan on proposing, could you please give me a little warning that why I'm in something else rather than sweatpants," I commented.

"You look perfect," He whispered.

"I love you," I whispered to him.

He leaned in capturing my lips with his.
