《You Don't Know Me》N I N E

"It's so good to see you guys!" Yasmine grinned before going in to hug Anthony.
Our entire group was watching from the opposite side of the diner.
Everyone could see how uncomfortable this situation was.
"Yeah" Anthony said while hugging her back.
"Summer. It's been too long" Yasmine smiled fakely at me.
"Mhm" I hummed.
Her eyes flicked down to our hands and you could see her smile tighten.
"You guys-"
"Hey Yasmine, we were just about to go. So yeah. Bye" Anthony nodded and pulled me out of the diner.
He pulled me to his car and we say silently for a few minutes while he drove.
"Anthony"
"I'm fine Summer" Anthony said.
"Okay" I sighed.
She made him like this. He closed himself off and didn't discuss his feelings. He would just bottle everything up and that's not the Anthony I grew up with. Anthony made his feelings known. That's why he was such a bubbly person.
"Why the hell is she in this side of town?" I heard him mutter to himself.
"I heard she transferred back to Eastview" I mumble quietly and he doesn't answer.
His hands squeezed the steering wheel tightly. He was angry and was trying not to yell. He was a yeller. He wouldn't yell at anyone in particular unless he was angry at them. But he would try to control himself around people who didn't like angry yelling (aka me.)
"You didn't think to mention it to me?" He said through clenched teeth.
"I just found out a few hours ago" I say.
"So you had a few hours to tell me" He said, his anger slightly seeping into his tone.
"We were out having fun! I didn't want to put you in a bad mood" I exclaim. He couldn't really be angry at me!?
"I would of liked to have some sort of warning before coming face to face with my ex, Summer" He spat.
"I didn't know she was going to show up at the diner! I would have told you if I knew!" I rolled my eyes.
"You need to think about possibilities. There was a major possibility that Yasmine would show up to her favorite restaurant the day she moved back" Anthony raised his voice.
"Shut up Anthony! You know I did nothing wrong. You just always get like this when she's involved" I yell back.
"It's true though Summer. Think about what you're about to do or not do. You always do things that cause problems" Anthony said back.
"Like what?" I exclaimed.
"You basically broke my friendship with Tanner" He said like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"Excuse me?" I took my seatbelt off to face him.

"Put your seatbelt back on Summer" He glanced at me.
"No. You don't get to blame me for what Tanner did. Okay? All I did was date someone I liked. It's not my fault Eric wouldn't approve-"
"Summer put your seatbelt on"
"He cheated on me Anthony. I didn't even want to tell you. You pulled it from me and decided to start this weird fake relationship to benefit yourself-"
"Summer put your god damn seatbelt on" Anthony yelled.
"Just bring me home" I whispered after putting it back on.
"Okay"
~~~
"Are you okay?" Eric asked when I walked in the living room.
"I'm fine" I kick my shoes off.
"No you're not. You're pissed" Eric said.
"You know what? You're right. I'm pissed" I spin towards everyone (Eric, Matt & Tanner) in the living room.
"Somehow it's my fault that Yasmine showed up. Somehow everything is my fault. Her showing up, him not knowing she was coming back, his friendship issues, Pluto not being a planet, global warming. Everything" I exclaim.
"Want me to beat him up?" Matt asked.
"No!" I yell and stomp my foot.
"Why not?"
"Because he cared about my seatbelt" I yelled in frustration.
I stomped into my room but I could still hear the confused laughing coming from my brothers.
The rest of the night went by slowly. I couldn't sleep because I was still angry. Angry at Anthony. Angry at Yasmine. Angry at Tanner. Angry at Kali. But mostly angry at myself.
I should have told Anthony what Yasmine said to me freshman year. It would have stopped alot of pain. Freshman year was the year he really fell for her and if I told him, that wouldn't have happened. He wouldn't be hurt and angry at me.
I had been ignoring everyone's calls. Marilyn's, Kali's, even Matt tried to call me to make sure I was really okay. But I didn't want to talk. I just didn't understand why Anthony blamed me for what happened. I mean yeah. I didn't tell him she was back, but I would have eventually. I just didn't want to bother him with it that day.
Maybe it seems like I'm overreacting, but in my defense, Anthony never got angry with me. Yeah, there was some tough love moments but never anything like this.
I don't like feeling like this. My heart aches, my face gets hot and I get choked up. I feel like I did something wrong but I know I didn't do anything.
I glanced at my phone and saw that Anthony was calling me. I stared at my phone contemplating whether or not I should answer it before deciding that ignoring him wouldn't be a good idea.
"Hello?" I whispered. I didn't want Eric to wake up since it was around 2 am.
"I'm sorry Sunshine" Anthony said.
"You should be" I say. "I didn't do anything wrong"
"I know. I was just... frazzled"
"Frazzled..."
"Frazzled" Anthony confirms and I snort. "What?"
"You use stupid words when you're apologizing" I laugh.
"Frazzled is not a stupid word" Anthony laughed.
"Mhm sure" I said sarcastically.
"Okay. You need to sleep" Anthony says abruptly.
"Why?"
"'cause we're going out tomorrow" Anthony says.
"Since when?" I furrow my eyebrows.
"Since now"
"Anthony" I sigh.
"Don't worry. You're going to have fun. Be ready by 12" He laughs.
"Fine" I feign annoyance. "Bye Anthony"
"Wait Summer!" Anthony exclaims and I jump.
"What?"
"Love you girlfriend"
"Shut up" I snort.
After I hung up, I was finally able to get to sleep. Before I knew it, my alarm was going off and Eric was yelling at me to shut it off. It was Saturday so everyone was sleeping in.
I checked my phone and saw that I had multiple texts from Anthony telling me not to eat breakfast and to dress casual. After sending a few texts to Marilyn & Kali, I went to pick out an outfit for today.
I settled on a white t-shirt and a pair of black leggings. I also decided I was going to wear my army green converse to match my camo jacket.
After my shower I did my make up lightly, just some mascara and cherry lip balm.
"Hello Sunshine" Anthony grinned when I walked out of my room.
"Don't you call before entering my home?" I snort while going into the fridge to get some orange juice.
"No eating! Were going to get brunch at the coffee shop" Anthony stopped me.
"I'm just getting a drink" I whine.
"I don't care" He grins.
"Hey kids" Mom says as she walks into the kitchen.
"Good morning Mrs. Preston" Anthony says.
"Are you feeling okay, Tony?" Mom laughs. "You haven't called me Mrs. Preston since you were in 6th grade"
"Well I'm taking your beautiful daughter out on a date today. It would be a little weird to call you mom" Anthony flashed her a smile that would make any girls stomach fill with butterflies.
"Oh! That's wonderful!" Mom squealed. "What are you guys going to do?"
"Yeah, what are we going to do?" I raised my eyebrows.
"Its a suprise" Anthony smirked but I could hear him whisper "Don't worry, I'll give you the deets later" to my mom.
"Okay! I'm hungry! Let's go get brunch!" I exclaim while walking towards the door.
"Gotta go Mrs. P" Anthony chased after me.
~~~
"C'mon Anthony. Just tell me where we're going" I groan for the 10th time.
It's 2:30 right now, we finished brunch at 1:30 and we've been driving ever since.
"Sunshine I'm going kick you out of the car if you don't stop asking that question" Anthony grinned.
"I'm bored. We've been driving for hours" I complain.
"One hour"
"One whole hour"
"Summer"
"What?"
"Shh" He pushed his finger against my lips.
We spent another 20 minutes driving before we pulled in front of this building that looked like a warehouse.
"This is the part where you ask if I've taken you out here to murder you" Anthony grins over at me.
"I'm not that cliche" I roll my eyes.
"C'mon" Anthony jumps out of the car.
As soon as I'm out of the car, Anthony grabs my hand and pulls me to the front door. I'm too distracted by his warm hand to notice where we are.
"Summer" Anthony says and I snap out of whatever trance I was in.
"Oh my god" I gasp. "Is this the place we went to for our 8th grade graduation trip?"
"Yeah!"
In 8th grade we went to this trampoline park for our last trip. It was all day and it was amazing. Eric, Tanner, Kali, Marilyn, Anthony and I spent the entire day together just jumping around, play fighting etc.
I would always say I wanted to go back but it was so far away that nobody wanted to take the drive.
"I like when you smile"
"What?" I glanced over at Anthony who was staring at me.
"Nothing" He snapped his eyes away.
"Weirdo" I laugh.
The next 5 hours were spent jumping around, pushing each other into foam pits, wrestling and just having fun.
"Anthony stop!" I squealed while running across the trampolines.
"He intercepts the ball" He says while scooping me off my feet.
"Stop!" I laugh loudly.
"Touchdown!" He yells while jumping into a pile of foam shapes.
"That was hilarious" Anthony laughs and I laugh with him.
After a few minutes, our laughter turned into shallow breaths and I'm suddenly getting flashbacks from the night of homecoming and our almost kiss.
"The place is going to close soon" Anthony whispers.
"Yeah?" I whisper back and his eyes flicker down to my lips.
"Summer- We should get going. It's a long drive" Anthony pulls back and climbs out of the pit.
The drive back home wasn't as awkward as a I expected it to be. Nothing is ever awkward with Anthony. He's just someone I'm naturally comfortable with. Maybe that's because he's been my friend since I was a baby.
I ended up dozing off on the ride home thinking about how this didn't feel fake anymore.
