《Bloodthirsty(KNJ)》30. Case Closed

A group of detectives was sitting around a desk, watching the young man as he was immersed in his work. He had been typing away on his computer for almost an hour now and he had a huge pile of documents in front of him. He was also on one of the precinct's computers, probably reading their files.
"Is he a police officer?"
"No."
"Then why is he using information reserved to the police? What is he doing?"
"Let him be."
Everyone turned around to see where the voice came from and they bowed instantly.
"Commissioner Min."
He walked up to his son and watched him from head to toe, then touched his shoulder.
"I'm glad you're alive. Your mother would've killed me if anything had happened to you. You're not hurt, are you?"
Yoongi had a small laugh.
"I'm sure you weren't particularly worried so I don't have to apologize for worrying you, right?"
Commissioner Min grinned.
"Maybe I should just throw you in prison for a few weeks as a punishment for everything you did."
"What did I do-"
"Oh, the list is long. Anyway, I need to talk to all of you."
And he looked at the whole team 3, then his son.
"Sure," Yoongi said as he pulled Jungkook from his seat and dragged him out.
"Hyung, I'm working." He complained in a low voice.
"This is work, too. Now shut up and obey."
They all followed commissioner Min in Yoongi's office, wondering what would happen to them. Some were nervous, some were just relieved that they had finally closed the case. It had been such a difficult year for the police because of this crazy serial killer.
"Where is she?" Commissioner Min asked as he sat down. He gestured them to sit down as well and they hurried to do so.
"Who?" His son asked back.
"Park's daughter."
"You mean Nari? She is at the hospital, with her husband."
"Is he okay?"
Yoongi sighed and rubbed his eyes.
"I don't know, dad. They are doing some tests on him and the results aren't out yet. I'm guessing he was drugged because he really looked out of it when we found him."
Commissioner Min nodded, then asked them what happened. They tried to piece the story together as much as they could, from each other's perspective. But Nari, who probably knew the most wasn't there so it was hard for them to really make sense.
Also, Eungi was still missing. No one knew where she was, not even her parents or her siblings. Her phone was off, her bank account was almost empty and she hadn't been at home for a week. The police didn't know what to do anymore.
Yoongi was already tired, but he knew he would get pressure from the higher-ups to wrap up things as soon as possible. The fact that his father came all the way to the precinct was a good indicator. Even though he was here to get more information that he could transmit to chairman Park as well.
"The strange thing is, as soon as I accessed his data, it was all photos, nothing more," Jungkook said after a moment of silence.
"Photos?" Yoongi asked, hoping for more details.
"Yeah, photos of..."
He gave commissioner Min a quick look, then he swallowed hard. He was blushing. Yoongi frowned and prompted him to continue.
"Photos of Nari noona and they were very... anyway, I deleted them for good. They can't be recovered. I'll try to find out if he shared them with someone. The other photos are still there, though. He seems to like photography, I don't know. He has so many on his hard drive."

"Who else did he photograph?" Commissioner Min asked.
"All of us, but especially Namjoon hyung, Nari noona, and me. He has a lot of our pictures. It's really creepy, and it goes way back. From high school until now."
"I really can't figure out what he wanted," Yoongi murmured.
"He is a killer, it's easy to guess what he wanted", Ji Ho remarked.
Yoongi shook his head.
"If that was the case, we would all be dead already. He's been following us and we didn't even notice. How easy would it have been for him to kill us?"
"Right, he had many opportunities even when Nari and I went there. When he locked them up-"
"Oh, yeah you heard everything right?" Jihye asked.
"Well, not everything. But from what I understood, he wanted something from her. I noticed something strange though. He didn't seem to care that the police would find him. He was relaxed as if he was having fun."
"That's because he is a psycho." Jihye sighed.
"He did say that he killed for fun," Soha added with a nod.
"Then why did he stop? It doesn't make sense." Yoongi asked to no one in particular.
"What if he isn't alone? What if everything he did had a purpose and someone else was pulling the strings behind him?"
"That would mean that we're not at the end of the tunnel just yet."
"Too bad he is dead, we would have interrogated him. Maybe he would've said something."
"We will never know now, will we? Park's daughter made sure of that."
"Don't start, dad."
"And you don't get to call me that at work, since you never come home to visit us."
Yoongi rolled his eyes as the others gave his father a funny look.
"I will be going now, I have a meeting. I trust that you will do everything to catch your colleague."
They all nodded.
"Good. You have three days."
"Dad?!?"
"Good luck." He said with a small laugh that sounded a lot like his son's.
When he left, no one moved a muscle. They were in choc. They weren't even done dealing with the situation at hand and they had another one. How would they find Eungi in three days? She had been in the police force for 5 years, she knew a lot about the way they operated. Also, she knew a lot of people who could hide her. How would they manage to reach out to all of them in three freaking days?
"Boss..." Ji Ho started and Yoongi nodded.
"I know, we're screwed. But you shouldn't worry too much about my dad. It's the higher-ups that will make our lives a living hell if we don't start moving."
Nari had been sitting in the same spot for hours, her eyes fixed on his face. He was so pale, but he looked so peaceful at the same time. The doctors said they needed to conduct more tests, but they told her that he was definitely drugged. But they still didn't know why he wasn't waking up. There was nothing wrong enough for him to pass out and stay in a coma for so long. His brain activity was fine, but he just wasn't waking up.
Damn you, Hyun Soo! I would kill you all over again if I had the chance.
She sighed and held his hand again. It was warm at least. She wondered if he could hear her if he could feel her.

She heard the door opening and turned to see Namjoon's mother coming in. Everyone was there with them. At some point, they went out to give them some privacy. What was the point, anyway? He wasn't even awake.
"You should go home and rest." Mrs. Kim suggested.
Nari shook her head.
"I can't. What if he wakes up and asks for me?"
"We'll call you right away."
"But I-"
"Nari, please. You have to take care of yourself. You're pregnant."
Nari looked up at her in surprise.
What the f**k?!
"You knew?! How?"
She had a small smile.
"Namjoon told me, I think he let it slip without realizing. He was so happy..."
She trailed off and looked down at her son. She did look tired and her eyes were bloodshot. Like everyone here, she hadn't slept all night. And there was enough going on for Nari to start her own drama. But still, how could Namjoon do that to her? This meant that Mr. Kim knew too, as well as Jungkook's parents and also her dad... Damn it. She had made him promise to tell them later when she would be in her second trimester. Why the hell did he tell his parents already?
"I'll let it slide for now, but I'll give him an earful when he wakes up!"
Mrs. Kim laughed.
"You guys are so cute, aren't you happy we made that surprise wedding?"
Don't you see? Everything they do, it's for their own benefit.
No.
They make it seem like they're protecting you or they care for you.
No.
But in reality, they only want to own you. They're using you-
No, stop! Why was she thinking about this psycho's words? They weren't even true. What did he even know about them?
You have no idea what they're hiding from you.
She closed her eyes and tried to think of something else. She shouldn't let him get to her, it was all over now. He was dead, he wouldn't bother them anymore. But strangely, she didn't feel anything about killing him.
During her career, she had killed three people. The first was an accident, she was trying to save a hostage and she ended up shooting the culprit. The second time was self-defense. She was on an undercover mission and well, her temper got the best of her and she was found out. It was her or him, she didn't have a choice.
In both cases, she had fallen into a short period of depression even though they weren't innocent people. But for Hyun Soo, it was different. There was nothing. No remorse, no sadness, nothing. It's true that he deserved it, but he was still a human being. She had killed a human being a few hours ago and here she was, sitting like everything was normal, worrying about her husband...
She felt his hand move in hers and gasped.
"Namjoon, baby, do you hear me?"
"What happened?" Mrs. Kim asked frantically.
"He- his hand... it moved."
But he wasn't moving anymore, there was no change in his facial expression either.
"Namjoon..."
She felt tears falling down her face. She hadn't even realized that she was crying. She felt so frustrated and confused. What was going on? Why wasn't anyone saying anything? Why wasn't he waking up?
"Nari?"
"I'm going," she said as she bent down to kiss Namjoon on the forehead.
She gave him one last look before leaving the room. The others were in the VIP lounge. She greeted them and her father proposed to drop her off. She was surprised he was even there at this hour, he was always so busy.
The car ride was silent at first, then when they stopped at a red light, he turned to her and smiled.
"How are you holding up?"
"How do you think?"
He didn't respond to that, so she looked his way. He was giving her an expectant look and he seemed worried. Maybe Hyun Soo was right about something, her father was closer to Namjoon and Jungkook than her. But that was her own fault and his too. If he hadn't neglected her when she was little...
"I'm sorry about what happened."
He looked back at the road as the light turned green and he drove away.
"It's not your fault," Nari finally answered, "why would you be sorry?"
"I just wish I had done a better job at guiding you. Maybe if I had made more time for you and been by your side more often, you wouldn't have made that choice of career."
"A better job? Dear father, you did not guide me at all. Also, my career choice has nothing to do with you. I wanted to catch bad guys and that's what I'm doing. I'm happy."
"You're constantly in danger..."
"We all are! Even if I was working at your company, Hyun Soo would have still done everything he did! He's been stalking us since our teen years."
"Hyun Soo? That's his name?"
"Yes, Kim Hyun Soo."
Again, her father kept silent. She glared at him, then continued "did you..."
She hesitated. She couldn't believe she was asking him this. Damn you, Hyun Soo!
"Did you hide things from me on purpose? Do you trust them more than me? Or is it that..."
She trailed off again and felt herself blushing. This was really embarrassing. She normally didn't care what her father did or thought. But why was she doing this? This psycho really did get to her, didn't he?
"I don't trust anyone more than you, you're the only family I have left. Well, besides my siblings but we're not on speaking terms at the moment... Anyway, It's just that you've been avoiding me and they are very close to you. And since you trust them more than me, I thought it didn't matter if they knew. At least, they'll know what to do when I'm not here anymore."
She didn't respond to that. She just felt stupid for letting Hyun Soo get to her. He was mentally ill, obviously. Nothing he did was normal so why believe anything he said?
The first thing she did when she got home was take a shower, then she ate breakfast. Well, she forced herself to eat for the baby. She didn't eat the night before, so she owed her baby that much. Now she was getting ready to go back to the hospital when the doorbell rang.
The police officers were gone and she was all alone now in this big house. Who would visit her at this time of the day? It was 8 a.m.! She looked at the monitor and rolled her eyes. Of course, They'd come here. She opened the door and waited for them in the living room. As soon as Jungkook got in, he jumped on her as if he hadn't seen her in years.
"Careful, don't crush the baby!" Soha said.
''I'm not dumb, of course, I was careful. How are you, noona?"
Nari smiled at him and bopped his nose.
"I'm fine, baby. How are you?"
He watched her carefully for a few seconds then hugged her.
"I was so scared... And I'm still worried. Hyung, he's-"
"He'll be fine, right?" Yoongi cut in.
Nari sighed as they were sitting around her.
"I don't know, the doctors aren't saying much. They are still running tests I guess... Anyway, what happened with you guys?"
They exchanged looks, and it was Yoongi who answered.
"Commissioner Min came personally to interrogate us."
"Oh, really?"
"Yeah... I think he'll call you, he asked for your number."
Nari didn't react to that. She knew the procedure, she knew she'd be interrogated, she knew she could be investigated for Hyun Soo's death. But looking at the way things were going, they might not investigate it too seriously. The whole police force was too eager to close the case and restore its image in the public eye. They wouldn't waste time on her.
However, they would probably ask for a mental health check-up in case she was still shocked by her encounter with the killer.
"Then who will interrogate me when I go back to work?"
Yoongi sighed and ran his fingers through his dark hair.
"Probably Hoseok, he is the only one I trust with this. The other detectives are..."
Yoongi hesitated, then Soha came closer to her friend. She smiled at her and held her hand.
"People at the precinct are a bit troubled by everything that's going on. They might make you uncomfortable."
"Uncomfortable?"
Soha nodded, but Nari could guess what she meant.
"Fine. So when-"
"There is no need for you to hurry back," Yoongi intervened.
Nari sighed but didn't fight back. She was tired and she missed her husband. She was also worried about her baby. She caressed her belly for a moment then sighed again.
"It'll be okay, don't worry."
"Plus, you really have to be careful. Try not to think about anything."
"How can I do that? My husband won't wake up and I don't even know if I'll keep my job."
"Do you really need to keep this job?" Yoongi asked softly.
Soha and Jungkook exchanged a look, then watched them. That was a sensitive topic and with the way her emotions were all over the place at the moment, this wasn't the time to discuss it with her. Who could dissuade her to continue being a detective? Literally everyone tried, but no one succeeded so they had to leave it alone.
"What do you mean?" She asked with a frown.
"Don't be mad, we're just worried about you. You can do whatever you want, we won't stop you. Just don't pressure yourself. There is no rush, you can come back whenever you want. If my dad wants to talk to you, he can come here personally."
"Commissioner Min in my house?"
"If you're scared, I'll come with him."
"I'm not scared, but my dad and him-"
She was interrupted by her phone's ringtone. She jumped on it, shopping that it was the hospital, but it was not. It was jin. What did he want now? She rolled her eyes and answered the call.
"Nari?"
"Yeah?"
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"That's good to hear."
"Right..."
"As you know, I'm in charge of the case, so I'll have to interrogate you as well."
"I know."
There was a short silence and Nari wondered if he was hiding something.
"What is it?" She pressed.
"Well, the thing is, they want to close this case as soon as possible, and since the culprit is dead..."
"Jin, what is it?"
"Nari, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, but they are asking me to make it seem like it was a simple kidnapping and a serial killing case. In the reports, it'll be written that you and your team saved a hostage. I'm not supposed to say anything about his relationship with you and Namjoon-"
"But there was no relationship, to begin with!"
"I'm talking about the stalking, the cameras in your house, the blood you found, the circumstances of the kidnapping, the texts he sent you... Those can't be traced back to him anyway."
"How do you know that they can't be traced back?!"
"Jungkook told me."
"Jungkook did?"
At the mention of his name, Jungkook gave her a confused look, but she just ignored him.
"It's the orders and I have to comply for now, but I thought I should tell you before you see it on TV."
"Thank you for the consideration, prosecutor Kim."
"Please don't do anything stupid?"
"Goodbye, Jin."
She hung up and threw her phone to the other side of the room. Her friends looked worried.
"What happened noona? What did I do?"
She suddenly screamed and threw her hands in the air.
"Nari?!"
"I can't do this, I can't! I need to see my husband. Now."
She stood up and walked up to the stairs. Jungkook followed her and held her hand.
"Noona, what is it?"
"You'll see it on TV soon. Now stop wasting my time, I have to go."
"Noona-"
"Back off!"
She pulled her hand from his hold and ran upstairs. She went in her dressing and threw on a shirt and a pair of jeans then took her coat and went back downstairs. Her friends were still standing in her leaving room, looking confused. She felt bad for acting this way, but she would go insane if she stayed there for one more second.
"Where are you going now?" Yoongi asked.
"To see my husband!" She answered before closing the door behind her.
Yoongi turned to look at the others.
"I'll meet with Jin, you guys should go to the hospital with her. I'll see you later."
They nodded and left as well. Yoongi sighed and turned around to leave, but his eyes fell on Nari's phone so he took it and left. After closing the door, he made sure that automated security was working, but remembered what Jungkook had told him earlier.

8 172The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.
