《Bloodthirsty(KNJ)》22. No Freaking Way

"Where were you on the night of March 7?"
Namjoon looked up at the detective or was it an inspector? He wasn't sure, but he didn't care. He just wanted to leave this place. He wanted to see his wife, he wanted this nightmare to end.
"I was at my now wife's house."
"But a witness saw you at another location at the same time."
"Your witness saw wrong-"
"I'm pretty sure she said the man looked exactly like you. Except for the hair colour, but it's so easy to change that nowadays, isn't it?"
Namjoon frowned at that. Someone who looked like him? With a different hair colour? Suddenly, he had a flashback from a few months ago, in Japan. And that creepy feeling came back to him as well. Could it be...?
"You don't have to answer that, sir." His lawyer stated, but he wasn't listening.
"His eyes... did the witness say anything about his eyes?" Namjoon pressed.
Hoseok gave him a confused look, then looked through the files that had the witness statement. He wondered why the young man in front of him would ask something like that, but he stopped all movements when he read a sentence in the statement.
He had purple hair and gray eyes.
Hoseok looked up at him again, still a frowning. "How did you know about his eyes?"
Namjoon turned even paler than before if that was possible. He was going crazy right now. How was it possible? What was going on? Who was that man? Was he the one killing these women? And why in the world did he look exactly like him?
"I saw him", Namjoon mumbled.
"What?"
"I saw him when I was in Japan a few months ago. I was with Nari..."
"Are you saying that you have dopplegänger who is out there killing people?!"
"How else can I explain this? I didn't kill anyone and your witness's description matches his."
There was a short silence and suddenly, Hoseok burst out laughing. Everyone else in the room looked surprised.
"I don't see what's funny?" Namjoon said, raising his left eyebrow.
"What's funny is that you're obviously mocking me. This is serious mister Kim, you might go to prison for the rest of your life, or even get executed. Now stop messing with me and answer my questions."
Namjoon sighed and ran his hands through his blond hair. He tried to calm himself down before speaking again. He knew he sounded crazy, but this whole situation was crazy. What he thought was an illusion turned out to be real and he still couldn't believe what was happening to him. Who was that guy? And why would the police not believe him? He had dyed his hair two times in months, black for the wedding, and 2 days after, he dyed it back in blond. When would he dye them purple without anyone noticing?
"Mr Kim, please answer my question. Where were you on the-"
"I was at Nari's house, I already told you. You can ask her or check the CCTVs near her house or something."
"Oh, we will check don't worry about that. Now, how about the week of April 14th to 21st what were you doing?"
Namjoon thought about it for a moment, trying to remember precisely what he did.
"I was at an event in Daegu. I stayed there for ten days."
"Were you working the whole time?"
"Yes, I was never left alone, not even for a minute. Except maybe when I used the bathroom."
"Were you sharing your hotel room as well?"
"No, but I barely slept anyway."
"Where did you go during your stay in Daegu?"
"I was in between the hotel and the venue, then I went to the bookstore a few times. I spent most of my time at the venue and working on my album. I don't know why you're asking me this, inspector but-"
"There was a case of kidnapping and murder during that time in Daegu."
A silence followed Hoseok's declaration, but his gaze didn't leave the idol's face for a second. He observed his expressions and his every move. He first looked upset, then sad, as if he was about to cry. Then he looked pissed.
"Let me guess, she was a fan of mine as well?" He asked in a low voice.
"Yes."
"Exactly how many people did this psycho kill?"
"You mean you?"
"I DIDN'T KILL ANYONE!!" Namjoon exclaimed getting up from his chair and slamming his hands on the table.
His lawyer stared in shock while Hoseok frowned. Something wasn't adding up. The Young man wasn't acting like a cold-blooded killer at all, unless he was a very good actor. He was replying to all the questions without hesitating either. He didn't seem to be lying. Plus, it would be easy to verify everything.
So if he was telling the truth, why was the witness so certain it was him she saw? Was it really possible that there was someone else who looked like him and was committing those crimes? It didn't make sense though. It was simply unbelievable.
"Sit down, mister Kim." Hoseok ordered as calmly as he could.
Namjoon obeyed, but he was still upset. Hoseok sighed and looked through the files again. At that moment, the door opened and Jin walked in. He was holding a document that he handed to Hoseok, then looked up at Namjoon with a smirk. Namjoon didn't say anything. He didn't even seem to notice Jin's mocking smirk. He was actually thinking about the victims.
He was understanding the magnitude of the situation. This evil bastard was killing young women. He was kidnapping them and making them bleed slowly to death. How cruel. Did he Watch them bleed like that? Did he gain some kind of twisted pleasure from it? Why? Why was it all happening? Why did he target his fans? Was it on purpose in order to frame him more easily? So many questions...
So this is how Nari was feeling all this time? This is why she was so obsessed with the case? This is why-
"Mister Kim, what happened on April 13th ten Years ago?" Hoseok suddenly asked.
Namjoon paled and his eyes grew so big that they almost fell out of their sockets. How did he know about this? His father had promised him that it would never resurface! He had sworn that nothing would appear on his criminal records or anywhere else! So how come he was being asked about this now? And today of all days!?
"Cat got your tongue mister idol?" Jin taunted.
Namjoon sighed and rubbed his temples. Why was this situation getting worse? Now he was having a migraine...
"You broke someone's ribs and jaw. He was hospitalized for weeks. You did this with your bare hands, mister Kim."
Namjoon still wasn't saying anything. What could he say anyway? It was all true. It all happened as the inspector said. He almost killed someone with his bare hands. This was the incident after which he had promised himself not to lose control ever again.

"And it wasn't even in your records, what else are you hiding from us?"
"How did you find it then if it wasn't in my records?" Namjoon retorted, finally looking Hoseok in the eyes again. And he saw something there, in the inspector's gaze. Was it compassion? Did he believe in his innocence? Or was he just pitying him?
Then he turned to Jin and gave him a questioning look.
"I have my ways," Jin let out and there it was, that smirk again. And Namjoon noticed it this time. He felt sick right away. He really hated this guy.
"With such a violent past, how can we-"
"It was just this one time, okay? I was pissed and I couldn't control myself. Plus, I was only 17."
"What happened?" Hoseok insisted.
He hated thinking about the incident because it angered him every time. He really didn't want to relive that day, but he didn't have a choice, did he?
"We were at a friend's party, I really didn't want to go, so I was already in a bad mood. But I somehow ended up following Jungkook and Nari, since they insisted. Even so, I couldn't leave them alone. They had the habit of causing trouble everywhere they went... Anyway, long story short, Jungkook got drunk so I had to take care of him. And once he was settled, I went looking for Nari so we could all go home and that's when-"
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He could remember it so clearly even after ten years. He even remembered that a-hole's face. He opened his eyes and continued with a trembling voice.
"I found her in a bedroom with that trash of a man who was trying to rape her. And I Lost it."
There was a silence after that and as Hoseok was watching the idol, his first thought was that the Young man had been in love with kitten all this time, so his reaction wasn't surprising. He himself would've killed whoever tried anything like that on his wife. He understood him. But still, he had a job to do and Namjoon wasn't making it easy.
"Was that before or after your first kill?" Jin spat after a moment.
"Hyung, stop it." Hoseok interrupted.
Namjoon gave Jin a dark look but didn't say anything. He was annoyed, and so was Hoseok. He loved his older friend very much but he was really tired of his behavior recently, especially when it came to Namjoon. He had never seen Jin acting like this before. Jealousy was really a poison, wasn't it? Yoongi hyung had told him about the love triangle between kitten and these two. He was sad for Jin, but he couldn't help thinking that he was going overboard.
"You only have circumstantial evidence and you can't hold my client any longer." The lawyer intervened once again.
Oh, the lawyers. Namjoon had almost forgotten about them. Some lawyer they were.
"The witness' statement is enough to hold him and search his house and his studio. Now, tell us everything we need to know. We've been in here too long already."
Jin pushed the victims' pictures further towards Namjoon and for the first time since he had been shown the pictures, he dared to look. He took a closer look at the girls. There were pictures of them while alive and pictures of their dead bodies. Probably to make him feel bad about the crimes he thought he committed. But really, he was just disgusted and pissed at whoever did this. Then he noticed something.
These girls... They almost looked the same. Big eyes, full lips small nose, darker complexion, curly long hair...They also looked strangely familiar. They looked like someone he knew and loved very much. Someone he couldn't live without.
Nari.
That psycho chose victims that f**king looked like his wife.
No freaking way.
Eungi took one last look at the hallway and silently closed the conference room's door.
"We're good," she said before taking a seat.
Nari nodded and turned her attention to the small group in the room. Well, not so small as there were eleven of them. The whole team was there except their boss, and Jimin and Taehyung had arrived just a minute ago. Jongin and Sehun also joined since they were already at the precinct, which surprised Nari. She'd never imagined that Sehun would believe in Namjoon's innocence.
"You guys are here because I need your help. As you all know..."
Her voice broke on the last word and she closed her eyes for a second. It was harder than she had anticipated. But then again, her husband was being framed for serial murder. How was she supposed to feel about it? What was she supposed to do?
As a wife, she wanted to be with him, to support him, to show him how much she loved him, to make sure that he didn't feel alone nor lost. But as a detective, she needed to work hard in order to get him out of this horrible situation. And she was running out of time. A team had already been sent to search Namjoon's house... well, their house, and interrogate his parents and colleagues.
His poor parents must be worried sick right now...
"Don't worry noona, we'll find a way." Jimin said with a reassuring smile.
Nari came back to reality and looked up at him before nodding in response. She would've smiled back, but she couldn't. Not now.
"I was thinking we could track his every move on the days of the murders and kidnappings. We've received the case files from other precincts in South Korea and all over the world. We haven't confirmed that he's behind all of them, but we can do that along the way. We don't have time to do it as a separate task. Any questions?"
"How will you track Namjoon's moves?" Jihye asked.
"He is an idol, so of course his staff has that information," Eungi answered with an eye roll.
"Yeah, about that," Nari started as she turned to Jungkook and pointed her finger at him, "he knows more about our whereabouts than any governmental agency."
Everyone seemed confused while Jungkook looked shocked. Nari grimaced before continuing, "You really thought I wouldn't find out about you putting tracking devices on me? Who do you take me for?"
Jungkook blushed and smiled sheepishly.
"I also know that you did the same with Namjoon and Soha."
"What?!"
Soha looked ready to throw hands and Nari couldn't help but laugh for the first time since all this madness started.
"Your boyfriend asked me to!" Jungkook defended himself.
"How dare you-"
"Okay, you guys can fight later. So as I was saying, Jungkook will check his data while we try to match everything with the case files."
"How can we help, then?" Taehyung asked.
"You'll interpret the murders and tell us if they match with our killer's MO."
"Right, sure." He nodded.
"And us?" Sehun asked.
"Oh, there is a mountain of files to go through. We'll do that together. Only Kyungsoo and Jungkook will be retracing Namjoon's whereabouts. Jungkook with his tracking records and kyungsoo with articles and pictures and everything posted online.
"Got it!"
"Now if there are no more questions, let's get back to work."
A few hours into their little workshop and Nari wasn't sure how to feel about all this. Every time an abduction and murder occurred outside of Seoul, Namjoon was also there. Victims were discovered in Busan the same week he was there for a mini-concert; another two victims in China where he had a major event. Same thing in Japan, France, and even New York. Something always happened when he was there.
Also, the profilers pointed out something no one had ever noticed before. The murders actually started the year Namjoon made his debut. The killer made three victims that year and one of them was most likely his first kill. Jimin guessed that he started on animals first when he was a kid before escalating on human beings.
"I think he would've transitioned from killing animals to killing humans eventually, but there was a trigger that made him start when he did." Jimin commented as he was going through his notes.
It was almost midnight and no one had had anything to eat for hours. They were all tired and hungry at this point. But They needed to find something fast. And so far, things were going in the right direction. There was an approximate time of kidnapping or time of death for every case. Jungkook had Namjoon's exact location at those times and he was nowhere near the victims' last known locations. That was a good start. The profilers' analysis was also shedding light on some details she hadn't even considered before.
"That trigger could be anything, but at that time, he would've changed behavior. He became more violent and excitable until he started getting comfortable with his sinister activity. He matured into it. That also was probably the consequence of something. Maybe the fact that he wasn't getting caught. This case," Jimin pointed at a case file, " was probably his first. It's messy and there was a partial print on the victim. But right after that, everything was perfect. Maybe he went back to practicing on animals?"
"But most importantly, looking at the case we have in our hands right now, not every murder was done by him. The chronological order and the crime scenes don't match. Take this Osaka case, for example, it occurred in 2011 and it was very clean, with no print while the one that occurred in 2013, the one Jimin referred to as his first kill, was slightly messy. He successfully erased the prints except on the body, and there was some blood and fabric on the victim at the dumping site. Also, the 2011 victim was barely dressed and had been sexually assaulted. The 2013 victim was wearing new clothes and was barely touched, except for a needle that was used to draw her blood."
There was a silence as everyone was trying to make sense of all this analysis, then Taehyung added even more information.
"His victimology also changed over the Years. In the early years, they were teenagers, no older than 17. But now, They are in their early 20s. This suggests that he only approaches women in his age range. Maybe because he is attracted to them or because he feels like they are easier to approach. In any case, over half of the victims we have here didn't die from our bloodsucking killer's hands."
"So you're saying that his body count is less than 30 in total."
"Probably... We shouldn't ignore the possibility that there were bodies that were never recovered for several reasons." Taehyung answered, then looked down at his notes. He looked through them several times, then frowned. He showed his notes to Jimin and murmured something to him. Now they were both frowning and they turned their attention to Nari.
"What?" She asked, confused.
"There is one more possibility we'd like to explore but for that, we'll need your old pictures."
"What? Why?"
"I have plenty of them on my computer!" Jungkook exclaimed before plugging some cables on his computer, probably the projector. A minute later, there were projections of Nari's high school pictures on the wall and most of them were with Jungkook, Namjoon, or Mimi.
"Awww she was so cute." Jongin cooed.
"And look at Jungkook! He's been hot his whole life, I see." Eungi teased.
"The doe eyes were bigger too," Jihye added with a little laugh.
"Namjoon was adorable, are you guys seeing the way he looks at her in this last photo? He was whipped since then. Wow." Soha observed, looking impressed.
"What a beautiful love story," Jihye mumbled dreamily.
"Well, these pictures explain a lot..." Sehun mumbled so that only Jongin who was sitting near him could hear. His friend rolled his eyes but didn't comment. He was tired of hearing Sehun complain about his failed relationship with Nari. He should've gotten over it by now. Sure, she was pretty and fun to be around sometimes, but she wasn't the only woman with these qualities in South Korea. Surely Sehun could find someone else to obsess over? And preferably someone who loved him back.
