《Bloodthirsty(KNJ)》4. The Date

"You're beautiful, my expensive girl."

"Shut up, Joonie."

"That's no way of responding to a compliment, Nari." He laughed.

"That's no compliment. I told you to stop calling me that, I hate that song."

"Please. I know you love it especially the part when-"

"Don't you dare!"

He smirked and she felt herself blushing.

Not today, satan!

Actually, the reason why she hated that song was... well, here is the thing. She grew up with this dork and she'd always seen him as her cute best friend slash brother. But when they became teenagers, things changed.

They weren't children anymore and she wasn't as comfortable around him as before. She saw him as a man, not her cute best friend anymore. It confused her.

To make things worse, he became an idol trainee, so they saw each other less. When he debuted, she realized that she had feelings for him, but she never got to confess because she couldn't stop comparing herself to the women around him.

The actresses, the other idols, they were beautiful, sexy, talented, very skinny. All the things she wasn't. She had a lot on her bones, as Soha liked to say. She also said that it was sexy as f**. Still, she wasn't an idol.

Her only talent was martial arts. She practiced it since high school and for her, the natural thing was to become a police officer. And she wasn't as feminine as the girls her age, so why would he look at her?

She decided to conceal her feelings and just forget about him. They would always be best friends and nothing else. She even started dating someone.

And he called her that ever since. She suspected he was doing so just to piss her off.

"By the way, why are you wearing black lenses?"

"Because I'm tired of people looking at me weird. I'm sure it's because of my green eyes."

Namjoon gave her a strange look, then smiled. His beautiful dimples popped out, making him look adorable.

"Your eyes are gorgeous. Please take them off?"

"What?"

"Please?"

"No"

"Come on!"

"NO!"

"Pleaaaaaase!"

She ended up taking off her lenses and he made her promise not to wear them ever again.

"It's really not because I hate my eyes. I just can't deal with strange looks today. I want to enjoy my date with you in peace, Joonie."

She winked at him and she could've sworn that he blushed. He looked down at his drink and acted all shy. She laughed at him before sipping her drink too.

"It's weird to see you act like this when you're a beast on stage. You really live up to your stage name. Rap Monster."

"Yeah, I feel different on stage."

There was a short silence and Nari wondered when their food would arrive. They had been sitting at this restaurant for over half an hour.

It's true that it was famous for its delicious sushi and other seafood dishes, but it wasn't that busy today. How come it took them so long to serve the food? Did they forget about them maybe? After all, they were in a private room. Oh, right. It was just the two of them.

She had promised herself not to think too much about it, but her heart was really acting up today. What the hell? It hadn't happened in years, why now all of a sudden?

Maybe because he looks particularly good today?

He was wearing all black. Black jeans, black shirt, black hat, and mask - since he didn't want to be recognized- and he had short blond hair. Honestly, blond hair looked the best on him, after black hair of course. She liked his natural hair better.

But it was Namjoon! She didn't look at Namjoon like that. Namjoon was her best friend. Best friend! Best friend! Maybe if she kept repeating it to herself, she'd be fine.

You like Seokjin remember? He has been your crush for months, how dare you act up just because Namjoon came back for a few days? He is leaving soon, you idiot! You better get your act together!

Quick, she needed to say something. They hadn't seen each other for four months, so there was so much to talk about. Right?

"Are you happy?" She suddenly asked him.

"I don't know."

Okay, she was not expecting that answer. She frowned and got closer to him.

"Why not? You've been particularly successful this year. You even won a few awards."

"But that's not everything. I've been thinking lately about how I'm happier when I'm around all of you guys. Mom, dad, Mimi, Jungkook, you. I miss you. A lot."

She didn't know how to answer to that. His coffee-brown eyes usually so peaceful looked sad and conflicted now. And she felt like crying.

She missed the old days when they hang out after school and studied together. When they could drop at each other's houses unannounced. When they got in trouble for staying out late. When everything was simple.

She missed him so much.

"We miss you too, sweetie. And we're here for you, it's gonna be okay."

He didn't say anything and kept looking at her.

"Singing, writing songs, it makes you happy, right? The love you get from your fans is rewarding as well, so you shouldn't have any regrets."

"I don't have any regrets, I just wish I could spend more time with my loved ones."

"You can do that now. Spend your days with your parents and the evenings with Kookie and me and Kyungmin. We'll make time for you. Actually no, I will make time for you. Kookie always has time, for some reasons."

"Right? It's hard to believe that he gets any work done. He's always free when you call him."

"And he is always hanging around when I'm at work. Maybe he should've gone to the police academy, too."

"I think he would make a great officer, with all those muscles ."

"You're one to talk! You're big for no reason."

"I know, why am I so big?"

He sighed dramatically and they laughed. That's when their food arrived, and everything went well from there.

After they finished eating, they decided to go to the amusement park. They started with the Ferris wheel, then they went to the drop tour.

Namjoon screamed his heart out and Nari kept laughing at him. She loved everything that was thrill-seeking. Was she weird? In any case, it was fun and that's what mattered.

She wanted to go on the roller coaster but had to give it up because Namjoon looked so pale. Instead, they walked around, visiting different stands to play games or buy gifts.

Later on, they went ice skating and finally ended up getting ice cream and crepes for dinner. Nari couldn't be happier. Her craving for sweets was satisfied for at least a week. She was all smile as he was walking her home. They were talking, laughing, holding hands all so naturally. She was just happy, and she could tell that he was, too.

"You're all better now, I see." She said, bumping her shoulder against his playfully.

"Yes I am, you do that to me."

"Glad to be at your service, captain!"

They exchanged a look and he smiled. She poked at his dimples and his smile grew bigger.

"Why are you so cute?"

"That's not the concept I'm going for, though."

"Really?"

"Yeah, I was going for sexy, since you're an expensive girl and all..."

"Oh my God, stop it! I swear, I'll slap you if you call me that again-"

She trailed off and stopped abruptly when she saw the man standing in front of them. She let go of Namjoon's hand as the young man took a few steps towards them.

"Hey, Nari. How are you?" He said with a smile.

"Hey, Jin. I'm alright, you?

"I'm great, thanks. Is it a bad time?"

"It-"

"We were on a date, but I'm bringing her home now. Hello, I'm Kim Namjoon and you are?"

"Jin, Kim Seokjin. Nice to meet you." Jin answered as he shook Namjopon's hand.

Nari looked from Namjoon to Jin and felt herself blushing in embarrassment and awkwardness. Why was she embarrassed? It's not like she was doing anything wrong? Plus, Jin didn't even call her to let her know he was coming.

"Why didn't you call me?"

"I did, but it went straight on voicemail."

"Really?"

She took her phone out of her pocket to check and it was turned off. Probably needed charging since she spent all day taking pictures and videos.

"My phone is dead. Sorry about that."

"But isn't it too late for a visit?" Namjoon asked in a harsher tone this time. Nari gave him a surprised look, then turned to Jin.

She was going to apologize, but he smiled, taking her breath away. What was wrong with her heart today? Was it Jin or Namjoon?

Make up your mind, woman!

"I know, but it's about work, so I thought- Nevermind, we can talk about it tomorrow."

"Did something happen?"

"Work?"

Nari gave Namjoon an exasperated look before explaining "he is the prosecutor on the case I'm working on right now. What's wrong with you?"

"You're talking about that dangerous case? The vampire killer?"

"Yes-"

"Right? It's really dangerous and I tried to get her to drop it, but she didn't listen."

"She never listens to anyone. She is the most stubborn person I have ever met."

"And you want to know who is even more stubborn? Her boss. Imagine such a combination?"

"Both of you shut up!" She suddenly snapped.

They both turned to look at her with confused expressions. If she wasn't upset, she would find them cute.

But how dared they? Coming from Jin, it was understandable, but Namjoon? He knew damn well how much she hated being told what to do. As if she was too dumb to know what she wanted.

"You know what, Jin? I think it would be better to talk about it tomorrow."

"Right. It was nice meeting you, Namjoon. Take care."

He bowed and left, leaving them both alone again. She turned to Namjoon and gave him her most fierce look.

"Sorry, I got carried away."

"You had to ruin such a beautiful day, huh?"

"I'm sorry-"

"No, you're not. You would do it all over again. If you could, you'd choose what cases I can work on, yourself."

This time he didn't answer and his expression changed. He was looking serious now, or was it anger? He didn't get angry easily though.

And what did she say that was so wrong, anyway? She was an adult and she could take care of herself. Why did the men around her think it was okay to boss her around?

"You're right, I would. In fact, what I want is for you to leave your job altogether and go work at your father's company."

"You have no right to tell me that, Joon!"

"Yes, I do! Do you have any idea what you put me through? What you put us through? We worry all the time because you constantly put yourself in danger. It's not enough that you work in the homicide division, but you're always looking for trouble as well! Going after criminals all by yourself? Provoking killers? What, do you think you're invincible?"

He held her by the arms and shook her lightly.

"Do you want to kill me with worry? Is that it?"

"How dare you criticize my job? How about you? Do you think we don't worry about you as well? You're always working, not carrying about your health. Your fans are all over you and won't even let you breathe. Even when you say high to a woman, it becomes a scandal. Who has it worse, sweetie? You or me?"

"It's not the same-"

"Why not? You get death threat just like I do, you think I don't know?"

His eyes widened and he paled. His hold on her arms tightened, hurting her a little.

"Y- you get death threats?"

"Even rape threats, but is it surprising? It's my job. I want to protect people and put the bad guys away."

"Nari-"

"Someone has to do it and you know it. The problem is that it's me. You want it to be anyone but me."

"So what? Are you implying that I'm being selfish? So yes, I'm selfish. I worry about you, I want you to be safe. I want it to stop, all the worry and panic. Do you know what I think about every time I receive a call from my family or yours and Jungkook's? Is it bad news? Did something happen to Nari again? What she is in a bad state and I can't even be there to hold her, hold her hand? What if she gets hurt and we can't save her? What will I do without her in my life? How am I going to survive?"

"What are you saying-"

Her voice broke and she looked down to hide her tears. How did they end up like this? It was such a beautiful day! They were so happy and now they were fighting over the same thing they used to fight about a few years back. She thought they were over this? Is this how he felt all along? Did he always have those thoughts?

He told her more than once that she should be careful at work. She knew he worried a lot, she knew Jungkook did too, and her father. But it was her choice, she loved her job so how could she stop? No one was ever safe, anyway. Even if she was an office worker, she could get killed, she could get involved in an accident, she could be the victim of a robbery gone wrong.

She saw all these situations every day and that's why she loved her job. Because she was in the position to stop the criminals from striking again.

Why couldn't anyone see that? All they cared about was what they wanted, not what she wanted.

She knew they wanted her safe, but getting her out of her job wasn't a guarantee that nothing would ever happen to her either! She understood their worries, but what could she do? Stay at home and never go out?

"Nari," He murmured and she looked up. He looked as devastated as she did.

"I didn't mean to make you cry, I'm sorry. I just want you to understand that all we want is for you to be safe."

And he hugged her. She hadn't realized how much she needed that hug until now.

She couldn't stop crying.

She thought about all the times when she almost lost her life, all the people that lost theirs because she didn't get to them on time, all the victims of these degenerates who thought they had any right over somebody else's life. She wanted to save as many people as she could, was that wrong?

"I'm sorry that you feel that way, Joonie. I'm so sorry. I'll be careful, I promise."

He didn't answer and held her tighter. As if he would never let go. And she wished he didn't.
