The pain in my chest instantly greeted me when I woke up from my blackout, my head pounded badly causing me to clutch onto it and let out a groan as I fluttered my eyes opened to see Scott rushing towards me. "You okay?" Scott asked worriedly.
"No. I feel like I got run over by a bus multiple times." I said, sitting up with Scott's help. My eyebrows furrowed noticing Stiles' absence. "Scott. Where is Stiles?" I asked worriedly, his eyes widen.
"Shit!" He hissed, rushing back towards the door.
"He's out there!?" I exclaimed, getting off the ground and rushing beside him.
"I tried to stop him but you know how Stiles is...Stubborn." I looked out the window to see Stiles but not only Stiles the same black shadow that attacked Derek, the Alpha. I quickly swung the door back open. "Stiles! Get back in!" I shouted, Stiles gasped when he saw what was bolting towards him and quickly ran back inside causing the three of us to quickly shut the doors.
"Where is it? Where did it go?" Scott asked quickly as the two both tried placing the tool in the bars to prevent the alpha from coming in which I'm positive that won't hold it back. "That won't hold it, will it?"
"Probably not," Stiles admitted.
Looking up to see the path leading towards the doors is completely empty and the only thing there were leaves moving around the pavement. Scott grabbed my arm dragging me with him as we walked backwards until we ended up running.
The three of us hurled into the classroom, I quickly shut the door behind us. "The desk—The desk." Stiles stuttered out knowing we had to put something against the door. We quickly flung around the desk trying to push it towards the door but a screeching sound of metal greeted us causing us to cringe. "Stop! Stop!" Stiles demanded, causing us to stop.
"The door's not going to keep it out." I whispered, quickly.
Scott sighed. "I know."
"It's your boss." Stiles said, catching us off guard causing us to look over at him.
"What?" I put my lips in a line, crossing my arms.
"Deaton. The alpha. Your boss." He continued.
I don't think so. If Deaton was the alpha then he had many chances to catch Scott why didn't he do it? My heart ached at the memory of the alpha attacking Derek.
"No." Scott's voice snapped me back into reality.
I bit my lips remained quiet, confused about this whole situation. "Yes, murder psycho werewolf!" Stiles exclaimed.
Scott shook his head in disagreement. "It can't be."
"Oh come on. He disappears, and that thing shows up ten seconds later to toss Derek 20 feet through the air? That's not convenient timing?" I tensed at the name of Derek.
"It's not him." Scott fought back.
"He killed Derek." Stiles continued, causing me to tense once again but this time feel some kind of sharp pain in my heart, I turned my back to them.
"Derek isn't dead." I muttered, looking over at Stiles.
"Blood spurted out of his mouth, okay?" Stiles argued, causing me to close my eyes tightly. "That doesn't exactly qualify as a minor injury. He's dead, and we're next." I clenched my jaw turning my body towards him.
"Wouldn't I know if my mate is dead?" I snapped, causing Stiles and Scott to both look at me.

"Okay, just-" Scott said cutting the subject off. "What do we do?"
I huffed walking towards the window, my eyes scanned the whole parking lot trying to find Derek but I didn't see him anywhere. "We get to my jeep, we get out of here, you seriously think about quitting your job, good?" Scott nodded his head in agreement, as he stood beside me as he placed his hand on the window sill.
"No, they don't open. The school's climate - controlled." Stiles informed him.
"Then we break it." I looked over at Scott, that has to be the stupidest Idea I have ever heard.
"Which will make a lot of noise," I added, causing him to look back at me.
I looked back at the window. My eyes fell onto Stiles' jeep staring at it carefully. "Then, uh, then we run really fast. Really fast." I blocked out Scott's stupid plan and stared at Stiles' jeep carefully to see it had been bent.
"Stiles," I cut the conversation between the two. "What's wrong with the hood of your jeep?" I asked, pointing it out causing them to stop searching the room for something to break the window.
The two both came to my side confused. "What do you mean? Nothing's wrong." Not seeing what I was seeing.
"It's bent." Scott informed him.
Stiles looked confused. "What? Like dented?" He asked, causing Scott and I to both shake our heads.
"No, he means bent."
Stiles walked closer to the glass window. "What the hell-" Finally seeing what we were seeing.
I didn't know what was happening but all I felt was Scott grabbing me and pulling me down covering me protectively as glass flew all around us causing us to scream.
I heard Stiles groan, as we looked at what was on the ground and had been thrown out of the window. "That's my battery." He whined, we sat up under the window that had been broken into pieces by Stiles' jeep battery.
Stiles started to get up but Scott quickly grabbed him. "Don't." He warned.
"We have to move." Stiles whispered back.
"He could be right outside." Scott said, keeping Stiles down with his hand on his shoulder. "Just let me take a look." He slowly looked up out the window, sliding back down.
"Nothing?" I asked.
He shook his head. "No."
"Move now?" Stiles chimed in.
Scott nodded his head. "Move now." We quickly got up and started moving.
I slowly opened the classroom door, slipping out of the door and into the hall to see two paths. "This way," Scott said, nervously heading forward.
"No, No, No, No." Stiles repeated obviously not wanting to go Scott's way.
I furrowed my brows. "What?" I couldn't help but ask.
"Somewhere without windows," Stiles responded, causing me to sigh in annoyance.
"Every single room in this building has windows." I whispered, annoyed.
"Or somewhere with less windows." Stiles corrected himself, causing me to look over at Scott to see if he had any ideas.
His eyebrows arched obviously realizing somewhere. "The locker room," Scott grabbed my hand dragging me with him to the locker room. We all rushed inside shutting the door behind us, I pressed my back against the door, breathing heavily. "Call your dad." Scott whispered, Stiles looked over at him in disbelief.
"And tell him what?" Stiles shot back.
Scott sighed, looking over at me. "I don't know..." He trailed. "Anything. gas leak, or a fire, whatever." I swallowed roughly, pushing myself off the door walking further inside the locker room. "If that thing sees the parking lot filled with cop cars, it'll take off." Scott uttered, Stiles still looked unconvinced.

"What if it doesn't?" Stiles questioned. "What if it goes completely terminator and kills every cop in sight including my dad?" He continued to reason.
"They have guns." I couldn't help but roll my eyes at what he said.
Stiles stared at him in skepticism "Yeah, and Derek had to be shot with a wolfsbane-laced bullet to even slow him down, you remember that." He reminded, goosebumps instantly appeared on my body when I thought of Derek.
I closed my eyes tightly remembering how injured he was. "Then we-" He froze thinking of another plan. "We have to...We have to find a way out and just run for it." I raised my eyebrow knowing how stupid that plan was.
They should know how fast that monster runs. "There's nothing near the school for at least a mile." I stated, trying to make him realize that his plan was stupid.
"What about Derek's car?" Scott continued to ask causing me to shrug.
Stiles nodded. "That could work." He agreed. "We go outside, we get the keys off his body, and then we take the car." I narrowed my eyes at him.
"And him." Scott and I said at the same time.
Stiles rolled his eyes at the two of us. "Fine. Whatever."
Stiles walked towards the door reaching for the doorknob but before he could open the door Scott grabbed him, preventing him from opening the door.
"What?" Stiles asked, staring at him confused.
"I think I heard something." He uttered, trying to concentrate.
"Like what?"
"Quiet" Scott still gripped onto Stiles' arm as he continued to listen and concentrate as he breathed nervously, making me nervous as I continued to stare at him.
Stiles moved to remove his hand from the door knob which caused Scott to grip onto his arm tighter. My breath hitched my throat when my eyes landed on a shadow at the glass window on the door a few centimeters away from us.
We backed up, staring at the shadow across from us in fear. "Hide." Scott whispered so low, you could barely catch on.
The three of us quickly looked around the room but there was nowhere for us to hide, until Stiles pulled the locker door open and slipped inside. "No, no, Stiles. No." Scott said, I ignored him slipping into the locker beside the one Stiles was hiding in.
While Scott sighed and slipped into the one across from us, my heart was pounding heavily as my breath continued to breathe heavily. I couldn't help but place my hand against my mouth trying to prevent myself from breathing heavily.
I held still when I caught sight of a figure through the holes of the locker I was hiding in, clutching onto my mouth tighter. The shadow walked by my locker and headed towards Scott's who was across from mine causing my eyes to widen.
Oh no. No. No.
I closed my eyes tightly hoping nothing would happen to Scott but that was until I heard the locker door swing open as a scream immediately escaped someone's throat
I quickly swung my locker door open the same time as Stiles, my eyebrows shot up in surprise when I saw the janitor. "Son of a bitch!" He exclaimed.
Stiles stumbles out of the locker in fear while Scott tries to hold the scared janitor that could have gotten a heart attack. "Quiet." Scott tried calming the janitor.
"Quiet my ass!" The Janitor exclaimed, angrily. "What the hell are you trying to do, kill me!?" He backed up grabbing his heart leaning against the locker looking like he's going to have a heart attack. "The three of you get out!"
I glared at the janitor in front of us. "Will you just listen for a half a second, okay?"
"No okay! Get the hell out of here now." He demanded, glaring at the three of us.
I watched the janitor push Stiles and Scott out furiously as I walked behind him trying to calm them down. I sighed walking next to Scott, as Stiles tried talking to the janitor. "Just one second to explain-" He was cut off by the janitor, who was being too stubborn to listen.
"Just shut up and go!" He shouted, all of a sudden out of nowhere the janitor suddenly whipped back causing the door to slam shut causing the three of us to look at each other confused.
But that was until the janitor's face slams against the glass window, Stiles grabbed me and pushed me behind him as the janitor's body continued to slam against the door frame, Scott ran over trying to open the door but it was jammed.
"Go! Go!" Stiles shouted, grabbing Scott pulling him with us as we ran down the corridors.
We continued running down the dark corridors, well that was until I looked over and noticed to see no one was with me. Stiles and Scott weren't around me which caused my heart to stop.
"Shit." I muttered, continuing to run trying to find a hiding spot, but that was until I felt my phone ring in my pocket. I breathed out heavily running behind a locker in the dark looking down at my phone to see a message from Scott.
Oh thank god. 'Meet me at your locker.' I moved out behind the locker room to run down the hallway and where my locker was located. As soon as I made it no one was around and it was empty. But that was until I heard a growl and realization hit me when I remembered Derek had broken Scott's phone.
I froze in my spot as I heard the movements behind me, breathing in and out heavily, closing my eyes tightly as I slowly turned around to be greeted by the alpha.
I paced back and forth realizing Layla was gone. One minute I was running with her the next I look to see her disappeared. "Stiles, we gotta go out to find her." I demanded, Stiles stared at me hesitantly.
"Scott calm down, we'll find her." He reassured. "But we need a plan before we do." I clenched my jaw angrily.
"Screw that. She could be hurt somewhere! I can't just leave her while we think of a plan!" I continued to shout as Stiles sighed realizing that thinking of a plan was stupid while she was out there.
"I can't lose her. I can't lose her." I paced back and forth freaking out. "This is all my fault, dragging her into this." I looked over at Stiles who was watching me carefully. "We have to find her now!" I ordered, walking towards the door swinging it open.
Stiles followed behind me as we continued to look around the corridors trying to find her but she was nowhere to be seen in the empty hallways.
*******************
I stared at the alpha in front of me cautiously, as I took steps back watching him carefully. He stared at me with those evil red eyes, clenching my hands into fist as my back pressed against the cold wall behind me cursing at the wall preventing me from walking further away as he took slow steps forward.
"Don't!" I held my hand up, trying to stop him from walking closer to me.
A laugh was heard, the devil was laughing. "Strong aren't you?" He chuckled, staring down at me. "It's like telling the death angel to stop sucking the soul out of your body." I gulped glaring at him with disgust.
"You won't hurt me. You need me." I reminded, he stared at him surprised with his red eyes.
"Mhm...I see we both want something from each other. So if you come with me then it's a win win for the both of us." I tensed when he got closer. "You survive. And I get my pack." His eyes slowly fell onto my wrist, looking down to see the mark on my wrist.
I looked back up to see him, glaring down at it. "Hale." He chuckled. "You're part of the hale family I see." I glared at him, with a death glare. "Let me guess that green eyed outside was your mate." Staring at him with despise and hatred. "Aw well sweetheart I guess this is where our conversation sadly comes to an end." Within second and before I could know what was happening I felt my body being slammed against the cold lockers and soon darkness took over me.

The Queen's Guard
Friedrich Schreiner is a proud gefreiter of the Queen's Guard, 2nd Company: the finest fighting infantry on the continent (barring the Temple Guard; but please don't bring that up). Service is honourable but, with the Empire on a peacetime footing, terribly boring. Affairs take a dramatic turn for the worse when a mysterious invader uses a forgotten and taboo magical means to breach the capital, plunging the nation into chaos and endangering the royal family. With events spiraling out of control, Friedrich is entrusted with a critical mission. Will hot lead, cold steel, and his determination be enough to see him through? The Queen's Guard is what I'm calling a black powder fantasy story: it's set in a loose equivalent of the early 18th century (plus or minus a few pieces I decided I wanted or didn't want). Magic exists, but not in a spell-slinging sort of way: it's Earth-shaking undertakings or minor enchantments forged in by master craftsmen, the grand working of a secretive cabal or a slight nudge to the course of a blow. I, the eternal optimist, have a full trilogy in mind. The first book is The Prince's Arquebusier, hence the cover and the title disagreeing! This is my shot at 2021's NaNoWriMo and RR Writathon! I've hitherto been terrible at writing long-form fiction, so this is an effort to break out of that by having some accountability in being supposed to post chapters regularly. Here's hoping it works! I have an outline, but not too much detail. I'll do my best to avoid continuity errors, doing anything glaringly stupid, or otherwise fluffing my lines, but I can't make any promises on that. Please do let me know any feedback! Always happy to improve. [participant in the Nov 2021 Royal Road Writathon challenge]
