《Bad is an Understatement | ✓》Chapter 30: The start of Winter Break

For the first time in a long time I have accomplished something I thought I never would. I woke up before Jen! I smile smugly as I walk towards her bed to wake her up.
I stand at the edge of the bed," Jen?"
I shake her a little, but she's in a deep sleep. I clear my throat and I yell in her ear, "Jen!"
She swiftly gets up," What? Who needs an ambulance! Are you dead?" Jen asks worriedly which causes me to laugh.
"No hahahaha," I take a deep breath," I was trying to wake you up."
"Why? It's winter break." She whines hiding under the covers again.
"Because Heath is going to be here in under thirty minutes so we can drive to your place." I remind her as I read the time off of my phone.
"What?!" She sits up, her hair flying in all directions. I nod. "Shit." She curses before running to the bathroom.
I sit down on my bed and grab my phone and scroll through it.
How'd you like the date last night?

I lock my phone at that moment and look at Jen who was currently listing off what she put in her suitcase. "You ready to go?" I ask Jen as I get up to grab my suitcases.
"Yup." She says popping the 'p'. "I still can't believe you woke up before me."
"Neither can I." I reply. "But I wouldn't expect this from me everyday."
"Oh don't worry I wasn't going to." We both laugh. Jen's phone rings and she picks it up.

"Hey... okay, we'll be down in two." Jen hangs up.
We carry our suitcases down to the parking lot where we see Heath's car parked. We walk over to him and stuff our suitcases into his trunk and the back seats. "I'm taking my car." I say twirling my keys around on my index finger. "Jen are you riding with me?"
"As much as I love you as a friend Riley. I just can't afford to have an heart attack at ten am in the morning." She says too sweetly," I'll be riding with my brother."
"Okay." I shrug and smile," Whatever suits you. I'll follow behind you." I say to Heath with no emotion and walk over to where I had parked my car last night.
I get in and warm up the car. Heath pulls out and I do the same following him to start the two hour road trip to their house.
*********
I drive exceptionally slow trailing behind Heath and Jen. We have twenty more minutes to go and I'm trying to bare through the pain.
As much as I love knowing I'm not pregnant, I hate the pain that comes with it. Yes, I got my period this morning and there is World War III going on in my stomach right now.
I don't take any pills so that I can work on my pain tolerance, but it's really killing me. I've been sitting in this position for over an hour and a half. I don't know if I can take it any longer.
My phone starts to ring and I pick it up. "Hello?"
"Riley, why are you driving so slow?" I hear Jen's voice.
"Are you on speaker?" I ask cautiously. I really don't wanna make a fuss about my period in front of Heath.
"Yeah, why?" Jen asks.
"Ah can we stop at the next gas station I just need a minute."
"Heath?" I hear Jen ask," Yeah, okay." She says.
I take the first exit behind Heath and we stop in the gas stations parking. I grab my side bag and walk out. I lean my back against the car as I feel a little dizzy. "Are you okay?" Jen walks up asking.
"Yeah I'm just on my period. It's killing like always."
"Oh, last month you didn't get of the bed for three days straight." She says.
"I know."
"Just take a Tylenol. It won't kill you." She scolds.
"You never know man." I joke around. She gives me a 'are you serious' look. "Okay. Fine." I give in to her deepening gaze. I search through my bag and take out the bottle of Tylenol I had packed. I open it and take a pill out. "Do you have a water bottle or something?" I ask Jen.

"No." She says just before Heath comes out walking with three water bottles in his hands. He stands with us and hands Jen and I one. I smile and take it from him graciously. I put the pill in my mouth and swallow it down with the water.
"We should get going." Heath says looking between Jen and I.
"Sure." Jen smiles and starts walking back to Heath's car.
"Wait Jen ah can you drive my car? I don't feel well enough to drive any longer."
"Oh, yeah okay." She looks at Heath for confirmation and he nods. I weakly walk over to the passenger seat and sit down. Jen enters the driver's seat and I pass her the keys. "You sure you're okay?" Jen asks with a distressed look plastered on her face.
"No, but I will be. Okay? Don't worry." I try to lessen her worry. Jen hesitates a little before starting the engine, but her hesitation soon vanishes away. When she starts driving I scoot down on the seat and lean my head against the closed window. I close my eyes to rest trying not think about the dreadful pain.
*********
"Riley. We're here." I hear Jen's soft voice. I peel my eyes open and rub them. I sit up tiredly and look out the window. "You've got to be kidding me." Are the first words that drop out from my lips when I see their castle which they prefer to call a house. "That's what you call a house?" I ask starstruck.
"Uh-huh." She says and I get out of the car to get a better view. They'd call my house back in Canada a pit compared to this.
Not that their house was a castle, it was just fricken huge. You'd think I'd be used to it because of Luke's house, but this is like double the size.
A man wearing beige coloured shorts and a pink t-shirt comes outside of the house. "Jen it's nice seeing you again." He greets Jen.
They firmly shake hands," It's nice seeing you again too Henry. You look more built." She wiggles her eyebrows teasing him.
The man looked around his late forties. They both laugh," Ah Henry this is Riley, Riley this is Henry he's kind of like our caretaker." Jen introduces after she notices Henry noticing me.
He lends out a hand and I shake it with mine," Nice to meet you." I truly smile because the pain has gone away now.
"Nice to meet you too, Riley." He politely smiles. He takes the keys from Jen's hands," I'll take that for you." He says. "Heath is inside and your bags have been placed in your rooms as well. Lunch will be in half an hour so be down in time." He mentions before climbing into my car. He drives off to the side of the house and enters an underground parking. What normal house has an underground parking?!
"Okay stop gawking the house. I bet you're scaring it." Jen says sarcastically. "Let's go in, I'll show you around before lunch." She starts walking in and I follow her.
She opens the door revealing a critically designed lobby. In the middle couches were set making a square with a black coffee table in the middle. Past the couches was a grand staircase which led upstairs. Dangling above the stairs was a massive and heavily designed chandelier.
"Ya done staring?" I hear Jen ask.
I nod not taking my eyes off of the fascinating designs of the room. I see Jen walking up the stairs so I do the same following her. "Wait up!" I yell catching up to her.
"Okay." She says as I stand next to her at the top of the stairs."If you go down that hallway," she says pointing to the left," that's where my room is. That way," she says pointing to the right," is where your room is going to be." She starts walking down the hallway. We take a left down another hallway and she stops at the last door on the left side," This is your room." She opens the door.
I look around the magnificent room. It has a king sized bed in the middle, antique furniture and a balcony which had an amazing view. "Like it?" Jen asks curiously.
"I love it." I say plopping down on the bed. I take my shoes off and snuggle in feeling really tired. The soft fabric sends warmth through my whole body and before I know it I fall into a deep sleep.

8 68Who Fixes Books Anyway?
On the pretense of a raise, the relatively new employee Pernie is called in to talk with her superiors. NOTE: This is a short story written for a class I took recently. As a result of deadlines, it does not possess the quality (or length) that I would like and is rather thrunkated. Perhaps sometime far in the furture I'll fix it up. For now, I have much more important things to work on, such as my other fiction.
