《The Greatest Journey (Completed)》Chapter XLIV

It was a Saturday of April and the night sky looked clear, "Are you ready?" mother walked in for me to attend the first dinner at Stanley Hall.
"Sorry I took to sleeping, I will be a little late, I am waiting for Mrs. Miller to shine my shoes."
"Do not take long," she warned and when she left.
My shoes though were under my dress covering my feet, I was ready, everything was in place but it was my courage that I could not find, it had abandoned me when my feet touched these hallowed grounds.
Joseph was right I looked ghastly, my dresses had been tightened to the last button and the rose of my cheeks had faded, I had withered like a flower. What happiness could I bring him or anyone else? Poor Joseph what he had done choosing me to spend his vivacious life with?
"Lady Alice Stewart!" Mrs. Hall received me with no hesitations in the hall as I walked on to join the others.
"Mrs. Hall," we touched hands.
"Oh child you look so thin in your fine dress," she gave a good examination of the new Alice.
"Yes I have gone through some changes."
"I see and I just saw your mother, Mrs. Stewart oh what a lovely and kind woman."
"Yes especially to those whom she enjoys the company of."
"Go on then join her, she is talking with the master now and will we see you after dinner? Mr. Bert said such a thing I think."
"Yes after dinner if it won't intrude on your tasks."
"No please do come around," she smiled and let go of my hand then I could feel my stomach tying into knots before walking in the room, not one singular event in society had made this nervous.
At my arrival Mr. Howard saw me, the severity of his frigid eyes was quick and he did not quit the conversation he was having with my mother.

"Lady Alice Stewart there you are," Mr. Henry Walker greeted me.
"Good evening Mr. Henry," I nodded.
"I am to escort you to dinner," he said.
"Thank you and by any chance is Lord Joseph here?"
"Yes, he will be here soon to escort my sister Miss Lillian," Henry showed me his sister; she was the prettiest of the ladies I saw in the parlor, gold ringlets, big bright eyes, the look of perfect unspoiled youth.
"Good," I nodded and my mother came to us.
"Mr. Henry good evening."
"Good evening Mrs. Stewart, I thought you both would like to meet the rest of my family."
"We certainly would," mother and I followed him and were presented to the respected Walker family.
As the introductions went on mostly I stood constrained by the conversations of people around me unlike Mr. Howard who moved from circles talking like the finest host, though some people found him odd none turned their noses at him and he pleased everyone with his topics even at time his debates of his own satirical nature.
"I will not concede, my staff is more reliable than yours though smaller in number they accomplish a great deal more with this piece of history than yours do with your London property," he said to Lady Scott's husband.
"You are right, he is as stubborn as a goat," Sir Scott laughed.
"Well a goat? I guess I can make allowance in the range of names the upper crust has given me," Mr. Howard teased and sipped his wine.
"I told you," Lady Scott giggled and so did the others around him.
"Lady Alice, Mrs. Theresa great to see you both again," Joseph came along and we nodded.
"Lord Joseph," I gave him the best smile under the circumstances.
"Lady Lilly how much you have changed," Joseph said as Miss Lillian blushed, this was their first encounter for the Spring Dinner for he was very taken by surprise with her presence with utter discomfort in his smile.

Then I saw why Mr. Howard had asked Joseph to escort Miss Lillian to dinner, or Lilly as some called her sweetly, there was in the least a hint of her inclination towards Joseph written all over her cheeks. Mr. Howard had the perfect thing to try to change Joseph's mind about our engagement by bringing together two people of equal reputation.
"Shall we?" Mr. Henry brought me down to earth.
"Yes," I held his arm to be escorted to dinner.
Mr. Howard sat on one end of the table and Joseph sat on the other, it was not until I saw Mr. Bert standing by and Ms. Johnson coming to serve us that my seat felt comfortable.
"Wine Lady Alice Stewart?" Henry asked when mine somehow had all been drunk and only the men could refill a ladies a cup which I found it extremely uncomfortable having to wait for someone to notice my cup was empty and then waiting for them to refill it.
"Yes thank you Mr. Henry," I agreed.
"So will you be at the Ascot this year?"
"Yes and yourself?"
"I will."
"Do you know there is an old link between my family and yours?"
"No I did not," I saw Joseph who talked to Lilly as if they were filled with secrets and Mr. Howard whose face was constantly turned away from mine.
"Well Sir Paul and my grandfather were actually childhood friends."
"Sorry I did not know, your grandfather is he..."
"Yes alive but unfortunately not doing so well lately."
"Oh I wish him to get better soon."
"Why do you not tell him yourself in another occasion?"
"We should not trouble your grandfather."
"It will be no trouble and I have no doubt my grandfather would love to meet a Stewart family member, especially if that someone is a pretty young lady."
"Mr. Henry," I warned him because of his flirtations and flatteries.
"Fine not another word," he chuckled.
This night I did got not even a good evening or a good night from Mr. Howard and retired to my room feeling indisposed by the end of dinner.
"Milady is everything alright?" Mrs. Hall walked in to my room. "I heard you came to bed earlier than the other guests and got worried with you looking so thin and frail."
"This lady was no lady tonight; I probably so much sherry they might change my name to Lady Sherry."
"And in your present state you do not bear it well."
"No I do not think so, can you please forgive me and give my apologies to the staff for not going to the kitchen tonight."
"Do not think on it and ring if you need anything else."
"Thank you Mrs. Hall for your kindness and not just today," I had always wanted to appreciate her for the treatment she gave me when I was not rich or a lady.
"Kindness unto the kind is always easy Lady Alice," she said closing the door to let me sleep.
The next morning I remembered a vague but peaceful dream with Mr. Howard; he walked into the room to ask me just one question.
"Are you ill Alice?" His pale long fingers caressed my face and because it was a dream I admitted the truth.
"Yes Mr. Howard, stay," I replied so he held my hand until I fell asleep again.
A dream which I ought not to have dreamed but it was of much comfort somehow and I thought it an omen of good then Mrs. Miller arrived to help me with my dress for breakfast and after the guests at Stanley's estate would go out for something I had only done once; hunting.

Rise of the Firstborn
[A participant in the Royal Road Writathon Challenge]As the inhibitor rises and the eternal flame is quenched, our lands shall be freed, and only then will the Princess be set to flee. It began with ice. A relentless, bone-chilling tickle of frost that stretched across the lands of Axulran, crawling over the mountain crests and freezing the grassy meadows. Frozen in time, the kingdom fought for political control all across the region of Ellixus, paying no mind to the death and torment they may cause along the way. Cateline Bennett, a princess consumed with ice, found herself lost in a foreign kingdom with nothing but her wits to survive. As she explores this unknown land, she unravels her past and discovers that the magic she had concealed for so long could unleash chaos so intense, it could destroy the world as she knew it. With her untapped magic and new friends, Cateline must vanquish the enemies that threatened the world of Denzethea as they knew it, else they, and all they knew, would crumble to ruin. NOTE: A review on this fiction has indicated that certain themes were traumatizing. While I believe this to be exagerated, I have added the appropriate tag for those who may be sensitive to those themes (fever dreams, delusions, and trials and tribulations).

Transcendence?
Author's Comment: I was asked about reading my work on other sites. The answer is simple: Currently I am not active in any other networks than royalroadl.com. Only here, I correct mistakes and errors. If you read it anywhere else and have to pay for it, or have to deal with an annoying amount of advertisement, You Are Being Betrayed. You would do good if you make other people in that network aware of it. This is a free project of mine for the purpose of having fun. And if people try to make money with it you shouldn't bother visiting their website. The only one whom I actually allowed to have my work on his website is Armaell who invested the time to compile them into pdf. (http://armaell-library.net/author/andur) ——————————————————————————————— Reading Order of the Multiverse-Books ——————————————————————————————— Transcendence? is a novel about reincarnation, love, hate and war. And everything else that's included. It follows the main characters, as they climb to the top of their society. And lose their humanity in the process to become something beyond human. It's settled in the same universe as Until death?. It can be seen as a prequel. But I plan for it to be a stand alone book. Nobody has to read Until death? in order to enjoy Transcendence?. There will be cool chapters, sad chapters, romantic chapters and funny chapters. Of course there will be boring chapters too. I believe that some explanation is necessary in every novel. Though I hope that there will be more funny chapters. How a chapter turns out always depends on my mood.

First Iteration
What is a soul ? Is it your true self ? Would you be the same if your soul kept traveling from life to life but your memories faded for each new life you had ? Your education would be different each time, your growing environment would be different, your personality might change. So what is the purpose of the soul ? Mortals never got an answer for this question. Finding an exact definition didn’t matter for them, what they knew was that a soul allowed reincarnation. Even if they lost some memories, getting glimpses of their past lives was more than enough. Getting the possibility of a new life, a better life was what they thrived for. This became an even greater truth as progenitors, the first of their cycle, became scarce. As hundreds of new progenitors were born each century, nowadays, no more than a handful of them appeared every 200 hundreds years. As they represent a new cycle, they embody new opportunities: some progenitors have made kingdoms, others have been their doom.
