《The Greatest Journey (Completed)》Chapter XXXII

Even in the darkness of the grand church the simple touch of his hand was easy to recognize before opening my eyes from my prayers. It was not Joseph who had sent me the note but the deceitful, "Mr. Howard?" He knelt beside me so closely his shoulders brushed against mine so I closed my eyes and continued in my praying stance.
"I mean Earl Bridgeston," forgetting he was not my master I adjusted my tone.
"By God it seems they trained you well, Lady Alice," he said with a mocking tone.
"Sir why are you here?"
"The polite thing would be to ask how I am Alice; or did you not learn any manners when you were out in the country?"
"How are you today my lord?" I obliged him with proper small talk though calling him m'lord in the Lord's house sounded like blasphemy.
"Come Alice," he got up but I stayed rooted in place, "follow me before someone sees us."
Forced by sense I followed him when he walked away from the seating of the church through the first door he could find which happened to be a small choir room.
"Sir is everything alright?"
"I have seen better days," he answered locking the door behind us and closing the curtains on the windows which left us with little light in the room from the common winter grey London sky.
"Is something the matter sir?" He stopped with his back to me towards the curtains he had closed and I stepped towards him to find what had taken place for this abrupt call.
"Yes, I have missed it," he said and I took another step towards him, "I have missed it when I was better."

"When you were better sir? You are not making any sense."
"I know, but I was better with you, when I was this close to you," I slowly looked up at his hypnotizing and unmistakable eyes and we were indeed too close.
What could I say to that statement? Why could I not stop my heart from growing inside my chest? It was a hopeless fight against my wishes.
"Sir why are you here?" I struggled with the words.
"I had to see you."
"Then you have seen me, now I must go before someone catches us," I tried moving but he put his hands on my waist.
"Catches us? To hear your fears, that expression coming from your mouth."
"Stop talking this way, my fears are not something to relish on and last night what were you thinking? You were completely..." I tried pushing his hands away but he pressed them further into me.
"Mad? Maybe, but God I have missed looking at your perfect face every day."
"You need to stop this now!"
"Why? When all I want is to kiss you? Or maybe I need it, the difference between the both are quite lost on me lately."
"Do not kiss me sir, please do not kiss me again, we cannot repeat the past."
He stopped when he heard my plea, "is it really what you want?"
"Please."
"Are you telling me I have kissed you against your will other times?"
"No that is not what I said."
"Were you being true to me when we kissed?"
"I will not speak of truth to someone who cannot begin to know its meaning! So why are you here? I only came because I thought the letter was from Joseph if I knew it was you..."

"Joseph? You have been corresponding with my son?"
"I have not but..."
It was the flowers that made me assume it was Joseph, but how wrong I had been, if I had only noticed the flowers were not likely to be picked by Joseph I would have stayed at home.
"If you thought it was my son then why did you come? Why would he need to see you at once?"
"I owe you no explanations."
"Tell me what Joseph has done or I will go at once and ask him myself!"
"He almost kissed me at dinner and I had to talk to him."
"What? How dare he! And how have you two gotten so close? Wait... Has he proposed again?"
"Yes."
"So you want him then? You want to marry my son!" He shouted.
"No sir, I want nothing to do with anything that comes from you."
"You are playing a game with me Alice!" He pulled me by the hand to look closer at him though I could not begin to think how I was the one playing with him, how could he see it that way?
"I am not the guilty one sir! You should remember you are the one who lured me here!" I said with my head held high like his.
"What else was I to do? I promised you my revenge," holding my hand he put it behind me and brought me closer to his body reminding me of his promised revenge when I left him.
"Leave me be sir."
"Promise me to not accept Joseph's proposal and I will forget about what you did to me when I needed you the most."
"Needed me? For what? Like we need to food to consume and forget about it the minute we are done? No you did not need me, not in your heart, and I will never make a promise to a cunning man as yourself."
"Alice do not take that tone with me," his lips parted and crept up near my mouth.
"And you will not make this transgression, I am honorable and I will not be drawn anymore by you to dishonor my convictions," I turned my face and he closed his eyes talking in my ear.
"I know you will not, I know how honorable you are, your convictions are true and your heart spotless. Do not for a second assume I do not know your character Alice for it is the very reason why I have chased you to the end of the world."
"Let me go Mr. Howard." My voice whimpered and I was paper thin wishing to be crumbled no more by his power or exalted by his words, the only words that filled and made sense of me.
"Ah there you are, the Alice that calls me Mr. Howard is here," his breath touched my cheeks.

Dungeon Core Chat Room.
This is a slower-paced "experiment and dungeon building" web novel that tries to use the idea of peer-to-peer communication with Dungeon Cores instead of Dungeon to slave monster communication to break up the detailed dungeon building. Rank 1 description: (minimum met for system initialization...detailed description as follows) Each race was given a system by the gods to make up for their shortcomings and balance their place in this world. Humans: Abysmally bad at understanding and using magic unable to use more than the lowest of magic were given the "Skill System" magic in the form of premade skills with use, study, and mastery tied to experience. Elves: Intuitively understand magic and have long lives leading to vast knowledge and skill in their chosen fields. However, as a species, they have nearly zero sex drive and less than low fertility, so they were gifted the "World Tree System" with experience gained through the care of natural areas – gifting the chance of children to increase their numbers without dirty copulation. All “natural” or “wild” monsters are given an "Evolution system" designed around killing and consuming as many creatures as possible, slowly increasing strength and, at thresholds, allowing mutations to alter them multiple times. Dungeon cores are different. Unlike humans, they can see, manipulate and live off mana. Unlike Elves, they naturally crystallize after extended periods of time in high mana level areas. However, they cannot easily move or communicate and typically go insane without companionship. As a species other than the odd eccentric they are unimaginative. Brute forcing solutions without the drive to truly innovate. Thus they have been gifted with the "Dungeon Connection System" a magical version of the internet accessible by their peers that allows them to barter and sell: bait, traps, monsters, and knowledge, as well as entertain each other with “adventure streams” using exciting recorded battles and humorous reels of arrogant chumps biting off more than they can chew to often fatal effects. This is the casual story of a dungeon unluckily spawned far from potential adventurers forced to innovate beyond its peers to find its place in this world. Rank 2 Description: Justification. I've been on a dungeon core kick for months and while I love the genre – it's sparse with entries. Often the forced conflict gets repetitive and frantic solving of threats "power levels" the protagonist to god levels to progress the plot – taking away the nice steady progression fantasy I'm looking for. (Progression in this story is linked to how strong of monsters/traps/whatever he can create not his "level"...this is demonstrated by some of his newer monsters beating his older monsters not with discrete "this monster has 10 attack this one has 40") Additionally, the focus on 3rd parties with their drama takes away from the reason I’m reading dungeon core novels in the first place – I'm looking for magical crafting, experimentation and kingdom building – not defence from higher and higher levelled enemies looking to steal/destroy/control the MC. This novel is kind of just me writing the story I wish I could read. I like thinking about the experimentation that can be done in fantasy settings using 'mana' as an excuse to make up rules and try to keep them internally consistent. IE once I define how a rule works, I'm going to commit to keeping it – no breaking hard truths I've given when it's convenient, even if it backs me into a corner. Hopefully, that should make the story interesting to read even if it's SOL and less action-oriented. There will be problems to solve and a clear progression in strength (of created monsters and knowledge) however due to not wanting to force conflict for the sake of conflict the general theme will be closer to slice of life with few action sequences and no overarching goal so please keep that in mind when picking this up as the genre is not for everyone. Finally, I have a clear goal of what I want from this story (not an endless romp but a series of arcs and then a conclusion that's a couple of dozen medium-sized chapters long) I want to commit to finishing it or at least bringing it to a point of rest. I hate all the engaging stories that stop with a “hiatus” indefinitely so in the event I lose motivation I'll work to end this even if the ending becomes rushed/unsatisfying just to give a sense of closure. I’m planning on including several polls in terms of direction and taking feedback heavily into account if I get enough readers (but may choose to ignore it if it deviates too far from the direction I want to take this as in feedback like: “The MC needs a cartoonishly evil arch-enemy that wants to enslave him and force the mc to pump out magic items” or “the MC needs to make a body and learn teleportation then live with humans” will get shot down without consideration.)
8 258Dungeon Engineer
Engineer reborn as a dungeon core in a fantasy world. Ike was a hobbyist clockmaker and former aerospace engineer enjoying his retirement on a habitat station orbiting Saturn. Unfortunately, his hard-earned peace was disturbed by a rapid decompression event and his resulting death. Contrary to his expectations, Ike found himself reincarnated as a handicapped and supposedly-man-eating dungeon core in a fantastic realm of wonder, magic, dragons, and wizards! Faced with a luckless start in this hostile new world, Ike will have to employ his new-found near-perfect recall of his past life experiences along with ingenuity to survive and manifest his ambitions while struggling with morality. IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: This is my first time ever writing fiction. Don't expect quality.
8 251The Demon Queen (On Hiatus)
This is a strange predicament I got myself into. Before me was the king of a human kingdom. "Welcome heroes from another world! Humanity needs your help in defeating the [Demon King]! His plans to destroy humanity must be stopped, and you are the destined heroes to defeat him!" Or so he says. No matter what, isn't this a really weird situation? I'm a demon you know? A demon! And not just any demon either, I'm the [Demon Queen] you know?! Why was I summoned as a hero?! Release Schedule:Every Wednesday and Saturday. On permanent hiatus until I find motivation to write this again. Currently writing a quest on fiction.live in the meantime under blazingseraph. The quest name is Elder Dragon Quest if you want to check it out.
8 203The Magic Brawler
Urmatia needs heroes. In a world of interactive game stats, weapon arts, magic cores, and supernatural creatures, the balance has been tilted. Vicious monsters and widespread mists plague the lands. Nefarious gods and villainous agents work in concert to bring ruin. Urmatia needs heroes. That's where John comes in. He's a young boxer who died in one world and got a second chance to help a new one. It's a hard responsibility. Everything has a cost. But when other heroes crumble, John raises his fist, ready for more.
