Author's Note: Sorry it's been so long since I've updated! I had a really big project on horror literature and it took up all my free time. I hope you all enjoy and keep commenting and voting.

Carrie spent most of the day falling in and out of consciousness. I sat beside her on the bed and played with Hunter on my lap. When the sun began to set, I woke her up. I didn't want her sleeping too much and being awake all night.
"Carrie," I said softly as I shook her awake.
Her eyes fluttered open and she moaned as she shifted her body on the mattress. Her naked body was twisted in the mess of sheets.
"How about we get you cleaned up?" I told her, not really asking.
"They'll be back soon?" Her voice cracked.
I nodded my head and watched her take a deep breath in. I looked back down at her body to see she was covered in bruises and cuts. With that stab wound, I didn't want her to move too much. I started peeling the sheets back. Carrie's eyes widened and shot her hand out to stop me.
"Don't worry," I told her. "I used to be a stripper. I've seen a lot of naked women."
"You were a stripper?" she asked.
"Only for about a year," I said. "It was disgusting. I'm so glad Charles got me out of that."
I left Hunter on the pillow next to Carrie before I got up to get more towels. When I came back into the room, she was tracing her finger along Hunter's cheek. I opened up the closet and pulled out a dress. It would be the easiest thing to get her in. I threw it down on the foot of the bed and picked up one of the towels.
I washed the remaining blood and sweat off of Carrie's skin. She continued to coo at Hunter as she stroked her cheek.
"Isn't anyone looking for you, Julie?" she asked.
I shook my head. "Nobody in my old life cared about me."
"Do you think anybody is looking for me?"
I stopped scrubbing her body. I felt my stomach twist and I felt the bile rising up in the back of my throat. I had no clue what to tell her.
"No," I said. Carrie squeezed her eyes shut. I continued to clean her body. "This is where you belong. This is your home."

I turned Carrie's face so that she was staring at me and no longer looking at Hunter. I washed away the dried up tears off of her cheeks.
"We're you in school?" I asked.
"No," she said quietly. "I was taking Biochemistry, but I dropped it. I hate science."
I giggled and it caused her lips to lift in a smile.
"Nobody likes science," I said. "I failed every class."
"My dad loved it," she told me. "He was so upset when he found out. He hasn't answered any of my texts or calls after that."
"That's his loss." I threw the towel down on the ground. I picked up the dress and rolled it up. "We'd never ignore you like that. Do you think you can sit up?"
Carrie held her wound before trying to sit. I watched her face wince in pain as she lifted her body up. She held her arms up as I shimmied the dress over her head and pulled it down her body.
"What do you think Tommy is going to do to me tonight?" Carrie asked. I could feel her body shaking underneath me. Her eyes began to well up with tears.
"Listen," I said sitting down to the edge of the bed. "You really need to follow what I say. I know Tommy has a short temper."
"So what do I do?" she asked.
"Never say no." Carrie opened up her mouth to speak, but I didn't give her the chance to. "He's going to do things that will seem disgusting at first. But I promise you it's not that bad."
"You mean I'm just supposed to let him rape me?" she asked as the tears began to roll down her cheeks.
I bit down on my lip. I felt bad for Carrie before I even met her. I knew Tommy was going to abuse his girl cruelly. I needed him to like her though. If he fell in love with Carrie he would forget about me. Jimmy, Hunter and I would be safe in that house down the road.
"Just lie there and don't move," I told her. I didn't know what kind of advice to give her. Jimmy had only ever raped me once, and I deserved it.
"What?" she asked shaking her head.
"If you fight against Tommy it'll make him angry," I told her. "He'll have no reason to hurt you if you just go with it."

Carrie wiped the tears off of her cheeks with the back of her hand. I threw my arms around her shoulders and hugged her. She cried out in pain and I let go of her. Carrie sobbed into her hands. I got up and ran into my room to grab my brush. I kneeled on the bed behind her and ran it through her hair.
"This insane," she sobbed. "This is so fucking crazy."
"Never swear either," I said. "That upsets them."
"Everything seems to upset them."
"The boys are easy to keep happy." I ripped the brush through the knots in her hair. I threaded the strands of hair through my fingers and began to braid her hair.
"Then why do they hurt us?" she asked.
"They don't hurt us because they want to," I told her. "They hurt us because they need to punish us. They want to teach us what's right and wrong."
"And raping us is what's right?" she spat.
I tightened my grip harder on her hair as I braided it. I watched her head tilt back as she gasped out in pain.
"I've become a better person since I came here," I said. "I used to hook up with random guys and spend all night getting drunk and high. Now I'm a wife and a mother."
"Julie-."
"Listen," I cut her off. I finished tying her hair before sitting down on the bed in front of her.
"What?" Carrie asked.
"I'll try talking to Tommy."
I couldn't believe the words that had just came out of my mouth. I tried my best not to look at Tommy, let alone speak to him. Jimmy would never let me talk to Tommy alone. Tommy would probably even try to get Jimmy to punish me for giving him advice on his girl.
"You'll get him to stop?" Her lips lifted into a smile. "You'll get him to let me go?"
"I can't get him to let you leave," I said. Her smile dropped. "I can ask him to go easier on you while you're still adjusting here."
"Thank you, Julie," she said.
The kitchen door opened up downstairs. I could hear the boys laughing as they walked into the house. Someone came up the steps and walked toward Tommy's room. I picked Hunter up off of the pillow and cradled him in my arms. Carrie was biting down on her lip and squeezing her eyes shut.
I got up off of the bed, not looking back at Carrie. Tommy opened up the door. His white shirt and the worn out knees of his jeans were streaked with dirt. He smirked when he saw me.
"Can I talk to you?" I whispered.
Tommy raised an eyebrow and took a quick look at Carrie. I looked over my shoulder to see she was curled up in a ball on the bed.
"About what?" he asked.
Tommy took a step forward so that he was towering next to me. He reeked of sweat and dirt. He slipped his arm around the small of my back. I tried to stop myself from shaking.
"Can you please be a bit kinder to Carrie?" my shaky voice asked. "She's hurt and scared."
"You're so sweet, Jules," he said.
He lowered his face so that our foreheads were touching. I could feel his warmth breath tickle against my nose.
"Let me make you a deal," he said.
He reached out and tucked a piece of hair behind my ear. Jimmy did this simple gesture, but it never felt this terrifying. He left his hand around my neck.
"I'll be kinder to Carrie," he said. "But for every day I go easier on her, you owe me something."
"What do you want?" I asked.
"You."
Tommy smirked and I squeezed my eyes shut. I felt Hunter wiggle around in my arms and I curled him tighter into my body.
"I have it planned out," he told me. "Next time Jimmy and Dad go out into town, we're leaving."
I opened my mouth up to speak and Tommy pressed his finger up against my lips.
"But until then, I want to have some fun," he said. Tommy's hand slid down my back and onto my ass. He squeezed it and pulled me closer to him. "If you want me to be nice to Carrie, you have to give me your body."

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
