Tommy was late coming down to breakfast. Jimmy and I didn't sleep much because of Carrie and Hunter's screaming. I was scrubbing the dishes clean as Jimmy and Charles talked. I could hear them murmuring, but I couldn't make out what they were saying.

Tommy came down the stairs and we all stopped and looked at us. He left the house without saying a word. Charles followed him. Jimmy got up and slid his arm around my back. He placed his finger under my chin and tilted my head up.

"Remember what I told you," he said. "I need you to help out Carrie. She needs to learn how to be as good as you."

"I'll try," I told him.

"Don't do any chores today. I want you to make her feel safe here. Tommy's probably terrified her."

The bile rose in the back of my throat as I thought about her screams. I nodded my head.

"Good girl." Jimmy leaned down and kissed me. "I should probably get outside. I love you."

"I love you too."

I turned around and continued washing the dishes. Carrie's bowl of oatmeal was sitting on the counter. The steam was rising in the air. I doubt she had much of an appetite.

Her faint footsteps were wondering around upstairs. I put the last dish away and I heard the stairs creak. I picked Hunter up out of his crib.

Carrie's long hair was dangling down in her face. Her left eye was swollen shut. Her right was bloodshot. Faint purple bruises lined her throat.

"Good morning," I said forcing my lips into a smile.

Carrie's eyes stayed on the floor. "Morning."

"Sit down. I made breakfast."

Carrie hesitantly pulled out a chair and sat down. She took a quick look up at me.

"Do you mind holding him for a minute?" I asked.

She gasped as I placed Hunter into her arms. I watched as she shifted Hunter's weight in her arms. Her lips lifted into a faint smile when she looked down at him.

I poured Carrie a glass of milk and picked her bowl up off of the counter.

"What's his name?" she asked me.

"Hunter."

I set Carrie's food down in front of her and picked up Hunter. I sat down across from her. Carrie stirred the spoon around in the oatmeal. I could see her

"You should eat," I told her.

It felt so odd to tell someone what to do. I haven't done it in so long.

"I want to go home," Carrie's voice cracked.

"This is your home," I said.

The sooner I convinced Carrie this was her home, the sooner Tommy would be nice to her. Tommy would like her better. He would completely forget about his plan. I bounced Hunter in my arms.

"Please," she begged. "I need to leave here."

"Why?" I asked her. Hopefully, I could show her how safe she was here.

"You don't know what Tommy did to me." Carrie's voice cracked and I watched the tears roll down her cheeks. Her body shook as she started to sob. "He's going to kill me."

"No!" I gasped.

I quickly put Hunter down in his crib and then hurried over to her. I got down on my knees in front of her. I tucked her hair behind her ears and she began to sob even more.

"Carrie, Tommy would never kill you," I told her. "He loves you."

"No he doesn't! You're all sick!" she screamed.

I looked over my shoulder at Hunter's crib. I was happy he hadn't started screaming too.

"No, trust me, Carrie," I said trying to calm her down.

I grabbed her wrists. She twisted her arms and tried to shake me off of her.

"Don't touch me!" she screamed at me. "You don't understand!"

"They took me too," I said.

Carrie stopped fighting against me. She took in a couple of deep breaths before looking at me. Her face was bright red and her hair was clinging to her face.

"What?" she asked. "Why? Why are you still here?"

"I love Jimmy."

Carrie started to shake her head violently. I got up off of my knees and ran my fingers through her hair. I stopped her from shaking her head. She was panting when she stopped fighting against me. If she acts this way with Tommy, I'm not surprised she's covered in bruises.

"How long have you been here?" she asked me.

"Two years." I shrugged my shoulders. "It's been the happiest two years of my life."

"How? Hasn't Jimmy ever tortured you?"

"Torture?" I asked raising an eyebrow. I dropped my hands off of the side of her face. "They never torture us. Carrie, they discipline us. If you show Tommy respect he won't hurt you."

"Respect?" she spat. "I'm just supposed to let him beat and rape me?"

"Tommy will never just beat you," I tried to explain. "They only ever hit us if they need to."

She grabbed my wrists and turned my arms over. The scatter of scars surrounding my tattoo was on display.

"What did you do for these?" she asked.

"I made mistakes. I screwed up and got punishments. But now I know better," I said.

She let go of one of my arms and wiped her nose and cheeks with the back of her hand. She kept her bloodshot eyes locked on my tattoo.

"This is all so messed up," she whispered to herself. "This can't be real."

I bit down onto my lip. There was so much she doesn't know yet. I don't want to witness her breakdown when she finds about the meat. Jimmy was so sweet and caring. He helped me accept it. Tommy wouldn't be that nice to Carrie. That's if Tommy didn't go through with his plan.

"I can help you," I told her. Her fingers curled tighter around my wrist and she looked up at me. "I can help you from getting hurt."

"How?" she asked.

"I haven't been punished in months. When I first came to this house I got punished a lot. I learned how to deal with the guys though. I know how to keep them happy. Do what I say and Tommy will stop hurting you."

"Can you help me escape?"

I gave her a faint smile. I watched one grow on her lips too.

"Let's just start with this," I told her.

Carrie nodded her head. I picked Hunter back up out of his crib and sat back down in my seat. Carrie wiped the remaining tears off of her cheeks before tucking her hair behind her ears.

"I was told that we don't have to do chores today," I said. "So we have all day to talk."

"Good. By the way, what's your name?" she asked.

"Julie."
