As soon as my baby was in my arms I forgot all about the pain. I had my beautiful baby boy with me.
A boy.
I knew it had to be a boy.
Jimmy had sat on the bed next to me and had his arm wrapped around me. Charles had washed my baby off before handing him over to me. I barely noticed him smiling as he watched Jimmy as he walked out of the room.
We had our family now. Our own family. Charles and Tommy were my family too, but this was different. Jimmy and I had a child. We were about to raise our own family.
My lips couldn’t stop from smiling as I stared down at my beautiful baby. I couldn’t believe how tiny he was. I was afraid to hold him too tight and squish him. He looked so fragile. He had a small circle for a mouth and a button of a nose. Thin strands of dark hair covered the pale skin on his scalp. His light blue eyes were dark. I heard once that all babies are born with blue eyes and that they change colour as they get older. I already think I can see Jimmy’s rich dark colour in them.
“He’s got your eyes,” I told Jimmy.
“He has your nose,” he said.
I turned my head up and kissed Jimmy. When I looked back down at my baby, his eyes were closed and he was in a blissful sleep. I tried my hardest to keep my arms still so that I wouldn’t wake him up.
“We still need to come up with a name,” he told me.

“Yeah,” I mumbled. I was too distracted by my angel in my arms.
“Have any ideas?”
My jaw dropped and I almost let our child go. I wrapped my arms tightly around him again and then panicked that I woke him. He was still asleep, all curled up in the red blanket Charles put him in.
I couldn’t believe that Jimmy would let me help make such an important decision. He really did trust me if he believed that I could make such an important decision. I didn’t think it would be possible, but my lips curled into an even bigger smile.
“Really?” I asked him quietly. I didn’t want to wake my baby up. He looked so peaceful.
“Yeah, of course,” he said. “He’s your baby too. I just don’t want you to give him a name like James Junior. I hate it when parents name their children after themselves.”
I nodded my head as I looked down at him. Picking out a name was a big responsibility. I never thought Jimmy would let me be in charge of this. What would I call him when I tell him that dinner is ready? What would I call him when I tuck him into bed at night? What would Jimmy call him when he needed extra help outside? Or when they had to go hunting?
“Hunter”
I didn’t realize I had said anything until I felt Jimmy’s arm tighten around me.
“Hunter,” he repeated. “I think it sounds pretty good.”
“You like it?”
“Yeah,” he said. His lips lifted into a smile and he leaned in and pressed his lips up against my temple. “It’s good. You did a good job, Julie.”
“Thank you.”
My jaw stretched and my eyes watered as I yawned. My body ached from fatigue and my eyelids felt heavy. The last thing I wanted to do was sleep. I just wanted to stare at Hunter all day.

I definitely liked the name.
“You should go to sleep,” Jimmy told me.
“Not yet,” I said shaking my head. It was rare that I said no to Jimmy, but I didn’t care right now.
“Yes. You’re exhausted and you need sleep,” he lectured me. “Hunter will still be here when you wake up. I’ll take care of him until then.”
Before I could say anything else, I felt Jimmy’s weight leave the bed. He reached down and pulled Hunter out of my arms. I wanted to warn Jimmy to be careful with him, but I knew that he already knew that. My arms felt empty without Hunter.
Jimmy was holding Hunter up in his arms and was staring at him intently. His hair was escaping from behind his ears, but he didn’t have any free hands to tuck it back behind his ear.
“There’s no crib though,” I told Jimmy.
“Dad and Tommy are building one downstairs.” He looked up from Hunter and over to me. “They’ll bring it up when they’re done. They didn’t want to disturb you while you’re resting.”
“You bought a crib?”
“No. We had one down in the basement. Now get to sleep.”
“Okay,” I agreed.
I slid down the bed and settled myself into a ball on my side. I felt like I had just been punched in the stomach, but I tried to ignore it. I watched as Jimmy cooed at our baby in his arms as he walked out the door. Fatigue soon took over my body.
