The pain was intense. It ran up my stomach and I would lean over in pain. At first, they weren’t too bad and were far apart. As the day went by slowly, the contractions became more painful and were closer apart. My hips ached and pain shot up my back when I leaned over.
My jeans were soaked after my water broke, so I went up to our room and put on one of the old sundresses Jimmy had given me. If I’m about to give birth, this would be the best way to do it.
I spent most of the day curled up on the couch or on one of the dining room tables. I kept staring out of the window. I hoped desperately that somebody would come in early. Maybe Jimmy wanted to check up onto me. Maybe Charles was having trouble with his knee and had to sit out on his chores. I needed somebody now.
Hours slowly went by and the pain became too much to handle. I went up to our room and lied down on the bed. I curled up on my side and dug my fingernails into my scalp. I tried to control my breathing as a contraction took over my body. My eyes were stinging with tears.
I was terrified that I was going to give birth alone in this house. I don’t know how to give birth. I didn’t know when to push or how to cut the umbilical cord.

What if it was a girl? I would have to hold onto my baby girl for hours before Jimmy came in and would snap her neck. I wouldn’t be able to hold my child and know that she was just waiting for her death. I can already see myself holding onto her and screaming as Jimmy tried to take her away. Tommy’s key told me that it was a girl, but what does an old wives really show? I had to hope it was a boy.
I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard the kitchen door open up downstairs.
“Jimmy!” I screamed out.
I heard him run upstairs as the stairs pounded under his feet. I cradled my stomach with my arm and sat up on the bed. His hair was tousled and his dark eyes were wide when he saw me.
“Julie.” He ran over and kneeled down in front of the bed. “What’s wrong?”
“The baby is coming,” I told him.
Jimmy had his hand on my arm and was rubbing it up and down. When I told him I was in labour, I felt his fingers curl into my wrist. His jaw was hanging open and I could see the fear wash over his face.
“Okay,” Jimmy said, nodding his head. He got up off of his knees and quickly pressed his lips up against my forehead. “Lean back on the bed and relax.”
Jimmy stacked a few pillows on top of mine. He was gentle as he put his hands on my shoulders and pushed me down onto my back.
“Don’t worry,” Jimmy told me. I watched him let out a deep breath. He was just as nervous as I was. “Just relax. I’ll get Dad. He’ll know what to do.”

He turned on his heels before I had a chance to answer him. I closed my eyes and tried to control my breathing. I could hear them running around downstairs and my heart started to pound. I knew I was about to start giving birth soon.
When I opened up my eyes again, I felt the weight of somebody at the end of the bed. Charles was sitting there, beside a stack of towels, and his lips were curled into a large smile.
“Time to bring my grandson into this world, Juliet,” he told me.
A nervous giggle escaped my lips. Jimmy rushed into the room with even more towels. What were they expecting to do with all of these towels?
Tommy strolled into the room behind him. It pissed me off to see how calm he was. He smirked at me and then winked. I let out a deep breath and dropped my head down onto the pillows. I knew that he was thinking about our conversation at the top of the stairs. He thought that after this I was going to leave Jimmy for him.
“Thomas, go up and take care of Julie,” Charles instructed him.
I muttered a curse under my breath. I would rather he be up at my head than down between my legs, but I wished that he wouldn’t be in the room at all. I wanted Jimmy up here comforting me, but I had no choice in that.
Another contraction spread across my stomach and down in between my legs. I gritted my teeth together. Without even thinking, I reached out and grabbed Tommy’s hand. He sat down on the edge of the bed next to me. He threw his arm over my shoulder and I reached out for his other hand when my next contraction hit.
“Ready to break Jim with this girl, Jules?” he whispered into my head.
I shook my head furiously side to side. He chuckled and buried his face into my neck. I looked down at Jimmy to see him furrowing his brows at him.
“Tommy!” Jimmy barked at him.
Tommy pulled his head out of my neck and then I closed my eyes. A new contraction hit and this one was much more intense. I howled out and pain and tightened my grip on his hands. I could hear Tommy gasp out in pain. He must haven’t been expecting it.
I didn’t open my eyes again until the birth was over. Charles told me when to push. I squeezed Tommy’s hands tightly and screamed out in pain. There was a great amount of pressure and whenever I stopped pushing it felt a stabbing pain in my stomach. I kept pushing so that the pain would stop.
All of the energy was gone from my body when I heard my baby’s cries. I couldn’t stop my lips from lifting into a smile when I heard my baby’s cries. My child was breathing and healthy.
I opened my eyes up again to see Tommy. He was staring at the end of bed. I wanted to sit up and look at my baby, but I couldn’t find the strength inside myself to move. Tommy took a quick look at me before getting up and storming out of the room.
“Julie,” Jimmy said over our baby’s crying. “It’s a boy.”
