“Open the door!” I could hear a woman screech. “Please! Please! You have to! They’re going to kill me if you don’t! Help!”
She continued to furiously pound on the door with her fists. I felt my stomach tighten, but a weird sense of relief fell over me. Jimmy and Tommy found people. We were going to have meat.
“Please!” she was screaming. “They’ve got my friends! We need to call the police!”
Jimmy and Tommy already have other people, but I couldn’t let her get away. Jimmy would be so happy for me getting them another body. The punishments would be less severe and his temper would cool down. He would be so proud of me.
I walked over to the door and I was surprised when the doorknob turned. Jimmy mustn’t have been locking the door for the last few months. I’ve never mentioned running away or did anything for them to make them feel suspicious. Jimmy was still trusting me.
When I opened up the door the girl fell into me. She grabbed my shoulders and began to sob into my neck. I stumbled back and tried not to fall over. Having this girl fall on my belly would be dangerous to the baby and then Jimmy would be furious at me. I think she was shocked by the awkward bump between us because she quickly pulled away.
Her hair was dyed black and was sticking to her face with sweat and tears. She had silver rings through her nose, eyebrows and lip. Her jeans and t-shirt were ripped and covered in dirt. Mud was splattered all up her arms.
“Sorry,” she said taking a quick look at my stomach. “Where’s your phone? I left mine in the car and I didn’t have time to get it before running away.”
“We don’t have a phone,” I told her.
Her eyebrows furrowed together and she shook her head.
“What do you mean?” she asked. I could hear the panic in her voice. “Everyone has a phone.”
“We can’t afford one,” I told her.
“Please,” she begged. She reached out and grabbed my arms. She looked down to see all the cuts and scabs and scars that surround my tattoo. Jimmy had threaten to cut it off a couple months ago when he was angry with me.

“My husband will be home soon,” I said. “He will be able to take you into town and get you help.”
“No,” she said violently shaking her head. “There’s no time for that. They’re killing my friends. They’re probably already dead.”
The last few words were too much for her and her body broke out into sobs. The tears were streaming down her cheeks and I snaked my arm around her back. She leaned into me as I helped her walk over to the table and I set down in one of the chairs. She put her elbows down on the table and then put her head in her hands.
I stood beside her and I watched as she cried. Jimmy would be proud of me for keeping her in this house, but he’d be so impressed with me if I killed her. If I was the one who stopped her from escaping this house.
“Why?” I heard the girl sob. “Why is this happening to me? This kind of thing only happens in bad horror movies.”
I put my hand on her back and slowly began to rub it back and forth. If I was comforting her then she would trust me more. It would be easier to kill her. I hadn’t seen a murder since we went to Noah’s. I had to do a better job this time.
“What’s your name?” I asked her.
“Lydia,” she said.
She took her head out of her hands and wiped her cheeks with her fingers. Her eyes were swollen and red.
“I’m Julie,” I said introducing myself. “Would you like some water?”
“Yes,” she said quietly.
I walked over to the cupboard and pulled out a glass. I turned on the tap and began to fill it. I saw the butcher knife lying beside the sin. I had taken it out a few minutes ago so I could start cutting the vegetables. I set the glass down on the counter and picked up the knife. I couldn’t make a mess. I didn’t want to spend all of tomorrow scrubbing the kitchen clean. I already know blood is hard to clean up.
“When do you think your husband will be coming home?” she said.
Her back was towards me, so she didn’t see me as I turned around with the knife in my hand. I tightened my grip and slowly walked towards her taking deep breaths.

“He should be home and minute now,” I said.
“Really?” she said turning around in her seat.
Her eyes grew large as she saw the knife in my hand. I swung my arm down and plunged the base of the knife into her neck. She screamed and grabbed her neck as she fell off of the chair and into the ground. I pulled the knife out of her flesh and blood sprayed up at me. Lydia continued to scream out in pain and she was grabbing the wound to try and stop the bleeding.
I used my weight to my advantage and got on top of her. I pinned her down onto the ground and grabbed the knife with both of my hands. I took a quick look down at myself to see I was covered in her blood. With another quick swing I brought the knife down onto her chest. It was a lot tougher than I suspected and I struggled against her ribs as I brought the blade down into her chest cavity.
She stopped squirming underneath me, but I stabbed her one more time just to make sure. She lied on the floor. Her pale skin was covered in a mixture of dirt. I looked around the kitchen to see the pool surrounding us and the splatters on the table and cupboards under the sink.
The door opened and Tommy walked in carrying a man over his shoulder. His jaw dropped when he saw me. It quickly turned into one of his smirks and he shook his head.
“Jules, I knew you were the girl for me,” he said. “Did you do that?”
I looked down at the girl’s brutally murdered body. The knife slipped out of my hand and clanged against the ground. Tommy put the man’s body down by the basement door and then ran out to the porch.
“Hey, Jimmy!” he yelled out. “Get in here. You’ll never believe it.”
Tommy ran in and then I looked up to see Jimmy running in behind him. Jimmy’s jaw dropped too, but unlike Tommy’s his didn’t go into a smirk. He walked towards me and looked down at the girl and examined her quickly.
“She got the girl that ran away,” he said in disbelief.
“I’m sorry,” I said looking up at him.
He got down on his knees beside me and tucked the bloody strands of hair in my face behind my ears. His eyes looked so soft and warm. Those were the eyes that made me fall in love with him when Charles first brought me here.
“I made a mess,” I told him.
He chuckled softly under his breath and his lips curled into a smile. He leaned in and lightly pressed his lips against my forehead.
“It’s okay, sweetheart,” he told me slightly. “Is the baby okay?”
“Yeah, he’s good,” I told him as I reached down and cradled my belly.
“Good, now let’s get you cleaned up.”
He reached out for me and curled me up into his arms. I was surprised to see that he was able to pick me up all this extra weight I have. I nestled myself into his chest and grabbed his shirt with my fist. I closed my eyes and didn’t open them up until he set me down.
I looked to see the tap to the tub in front of me. The white porcelain of the tub was cold against my skin. I looked over at Jimmy to see that his grey shirt was covered in Lydia’s blood. Jimmy reached down and pulled the dress of off me.
He turned on the tap and I let out a gasp as the ice cold water hit my skin. It slowly warmed up until it turned lukewarm. Jimmy took the elastic out of my hair so that my long, dark hair tumbled down my shoulders and into the water. He picked up a towel and started cleaning off my body.
“I love you so much,” he told me.
He lips lifted into a smile and I could feel the heat rush up to my face. It has been so long since Jimmy had told me that. Not only did we have meat again, but Jimmy was happy with me.
“I love you too.”
He leaned in and kissed me. I was so happy that we were back to our little content lives. Next thing was to have our son and move out.

Demonizing Matters
A high fantasy drama about a young woman who finds out a demon secret. This secret sparks a growing conflict between demons and humans. While trying to save her own life and dealing with the unexpected consequences of her actions, she falls in love with a hated demon. We follow the drama of Lita, alongside a cast of several other POV characters, as she discovers secrets (both open and purposefully hidden), makes well intentioned but sometimes disastrous decisions, and encounters prejudices and truths. Demons may be evil… or not. Humans may be good… or not. God is aloof… or not. Publishing every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This is my first real work! Super excited to be publishing! I don’t spend a lot of time describing gore, sex, trauma or any other type of scene that would be labeled as mature. I've labeled the story as mature in every way more because I don't quite understand the standard and don't know if I've crossed the line at all (and I'd rather be safe than get my story rejected for under labeling ;)). Mostly I hint, start the scene then interrupt/fade out, and in general let the reader know it happens but without making it too explicit. (I’d love to hear how I did on this! And if it was still entertaining/informative without being traumatizing.) This is what I prefer to read myself so that’s what I write. I’m not apologizing. ;) If I mislabeled my mature content it was by accident. And, yes, the pacing was also on purpose. Beyond that, I welcome any feedback you want to give! Enjoy the story!
