I turned around, wanting to get back into my room as quickly as possible. I was careful to make sure that it didn’t look like I was running back into the room. If Tommy was going to think I was on his side, I had to play the part. Jimmy wanted to move before I gave birth so I shouldn’t have to do it for long.

“Julie,” I heard Tommy call out as I walked in through the door.

“Yes?” I asked poking my head out of the doorframe.

“Jimmy’s gone and you’re just going to waste our time together?” he asked me.

“Oh,” I gasped. “I’m sorry. I’m just really tired. I was going to go and take a nap.”

“I don’t care,” Tommy spat. “Come over here.”

He cocked his head to motion down the hallway towards his bedroom door. My heart jumped in my chest. Tommy was bad on a normal day and I never wanted to be around him. But he had just tried to push me down the stairs to kill my baby. The thought of him touching me in any way made my stomach twist into a knot.

“Jules.” He must have seen the hesitation on my face. “Jimmy’s never going to know. No one is going to tell him.”

“He wants me to stay in bed though,” I told him.

“You will be,” he said. “You’ll just be in mine instead.”

My stomach managed to twist into an even tighter knot. My throat began to contract and I was scared that I wouldn’t be able to start talking again without crying.

“What if they come home and we don’t hear them?” I asked. “We’d be caught.”

“They won’t be home for hours.”

“What if they come home early?”

“Juliet,” he snapped. Since I had him laughing at the stairs he had been a lot nicer with me. Hearing the venom return to his voice made me even more scared. If I wasn’t careful I know he’ll throw me down the stairs for certain. “Jimmy hasn’t obviously taught you anything. Stop asking me questions. You’re not allowed to do that.”

“I’m sorry,” I said quietly. “I just don’t want you to get caught by your Dad and get in trouble.”

I heard Tommy laugh and it caught me off guard. I crossed my arm and pulled the hoodie Jimmy had given me to sleep in, tighter around me.

“You’re a good girl. So much better than all of those bitches we drag into this house,” he said.

I let my jaw drop when I heard Tommy say that word. Jimmy had clearly told me that nobody was allowed to swear in the house. I didn’t expect him to say that.

“Calm down,” he said. “It’s just a word.”

“I thought there was no swearing,” I told him.

Tommy started to laugh harder and he ran his hand through his short brown hair. He shook his head and ran his hand down to his face to rub the stubble that has been covering his jaw for the last few weeks.

“No swearing?” he said wryly. He slowly started to walk towards me. I let my eyes drop onto the floor, not wanting to look at him. “Dad says there’s no swearing in this house, but for some reason that rule only applies to the family. Do you know what everyone else says when they’re not pleading for their life? It’s all those words we’re not supposed to say.”

He was right in front of me. I kept my eyes on the floor and I could see his bare feet sticking out of the faded flannel pajama bottoms that he was wearing. I could hear his breathing and a hand came out and grabbed the bottom of my chin and forced me to stare into his eyes.

“You would like it,” he told me slowly.

I shook my head furiously, but he still kept his tight grip on my jaw.

“Oh, yeah, you would,” his lips curling into one of his awful smirks. “You’ve done it before. Too bad he was unconscious when they had you slit his throat. It’s the best when they’re awake and know what’s going on. You know why?”

I knew he didn’t expect me to answer the question, but I still shook my head side to side.

“A person’s true self comes out in those last minutes of their life. Especially if someone they love is there with them too. You can see who is a spineless coward, which is most of them, and who really has the balls to deal with their fate.

“I mean becoming that person is awesome. You know, the one that controls their fate. You’re the most important person in their life. They’re relying on you and you’re crushing their bones or slitting their throat. It’s beautiful.”

I could feel myself shake and I knew Tommy could see it. I remembered to the way that woman kept screaming over and over when Jimmy made me slit the man’s throat and Gabe made me cut off his face. I don’t know how Tommy could possibly enjoy it.

“I can’t wait until somebody else comes onto the property,” he continued, “and not because I’m hungry. I want to feel that rush again. That feeling when you drag a blade through somebody’s skin…there’s no words to describe it. But you know about it already.”

I swallowed hard and awkwardly shifted my weight from foot to foot. Tommy loosened up his grip on my jaw and slid his hand down onto my throat.

“You’ll feel it with me,” Tommy said smirking. “When you’re mine we’ll share it. We won’t wait for somebody to come on our property either. I hate the waiting, it sucks. It’ll be just you and me and blood. Oh, the blood.”

Tommy started to chuckle and shook his head. I continued to shake. If Tommy noticed he didn’t say anything. He continued to stare at me coldly. I would look in his eyes for a second before I couldn’t stand it any longer and would force myself to stare at his shoulder.

“There’s so much blood in the human body,” he said quietly.

“Sounds like fun,” I croaked.

“It will be,” Tommy said before leaning in and crushing his lips against mine.

I didn’t struggle, but instead stood there frozen as I tried to take in exactly everything he had just said to me. He let his hot breath fill my mouth. He snaked one of his arms around my waist and he pulled me closer to him.

When he finally pulled away from me his lips were still curled into a smile. I faked one just so he didn’t know how disgusted I was.

“Go cook me something,” he ordered me. “And use meat.”

“Charles told me I couldn’t,” I said.

“I don’t care,” he told me. “You’re going to do it and if anyone asks you anything you’re just going to say that you are the one who ate it.”

“But-“I started.

“Just do it,” he snapped.

He took his arm off of my waist and pushed me forward. I nodded my head and walked towards the stairs. I kept a tight grip on the banister as I slowly walked down the stairs, just in case Tommy had really decided to kill my baby. I tried my best to not think of my body tumbling down the stairs and then lying in a puddle of my own blood.

We safely made it to the kitchen. Tommy pulled out a chair and watched me as I fried up some meat for him. I kept thinking about the joy Tommy got as he striped them into these tiny pieces.
