The days melted together and seemed to become one. I spent the days cooking and cleaning the house while they were outside. Jimmy and Tommy hadn’t gotten into anymore arguments, but it didn’t stop Tommy from having that stupid smirk on his lips whenever he saw me. Jimmy and I would go up to his room and he would talk about our sons.
Days passed by, possibly even weeks, maybe even months. I had lost complete track of time and I was happy in my little daily routine. There were no more fights, I hadn’t gotten in trouble, Tommy didn’t touch me and they didn’t go out hunting. Life seemed perfect to me. They were my loving family that gave me a happy home.
We were sitting down at the table one day, and it’s when I realized how much time had passed by. I had cleared off the table and was washing the dishes as Charles riffled through the stack of mail they had.
“Here’s a letter from Taylor,” he announced.
My hands stayed in the water, but I turned my head around to see him rip open the envelope. He pulled out a piece of paper and unfolded it. I continued to wash the dishes as he silently read it in his head.
“What is it?” Jimmy asked.
His voice sounded soft and concerned. I couldn’t see Charles’s face, but I could tell from Jimmy’s voice that it wasn’t good news.
“Emme had his baby,” he told them. “It was a girl.”
I felt my stomach twist into a knot. The plate I was washing slipped out of my hands and back into the soapy water. I gasped and picked it back up again, praying that I didn’t crack it.

“Better luck next time then,” Tommy said.
“You can’t seriously say that,” Jimmy said in disgust.
“Oh, come on,” he said wryly. “It took Gabe and Lindsay like three years to get Jared. They obviously weren’t doing it right.”
“You don’t know that,” Jimmy snapped.
“All I know is that, unlike you, Taylor actually got his girl pregnant.”
“Thomas!” Charles barked.
I hadn’t turned around while they were arguing. I couldn’t force myself to. A chair screeched across the ground.
“It’s been almost six months, Jim,” Tommy said. “But to be fair we all expected it from you.”
Another chair fell against the ground and I turned around to see Jimmy leaning over the table. He opened his mouth to start yelling at Tommy, but Charles silenced them.
“That’s it,” Charles’s voice boomed through the kitchen. “Thomas, go up to your room. You too, James. I don’t want to hear another word about this again or there will be severe consequences. Understand?”
They both nodded their heads and Tommy ran up the stairs. When Jimmy heard Tommy’s door slam shut he went up the stairs. I turned around and began to dry all of the dishes. Charles let out a deep breath as he sank back in his chair and shook his head. He pulled out a book and began reading.
Charles hadn’t said anything as I put away the dishes. When I walked by the table, I bent down to pick up the chair that Jimmy had knocked over. Charles watched me as I walked over to the stairs.
“Juliet,” he called out.
I spun around on my heels. “Yes?”
“Come here,” he said gesturing to the chair I had just knocked over. “I want to talk to you for a bit.”
“Okay,” I said quietly as I walked over to the table.

I pulled out the chair and he set his book down on top of the table. I sat down in the chair and pulled at the sleeves of the sweater Jimmy gave me. Talking to Charles always made me nervous.
“Now, I know that women do things a little differently outside of this house,” he told me. “I just want to make sure that you haven’t done anything to yourself that would stop you from having children.”
“I don’t understand,” I said. I could feel the heat rush up to my cheeks.
“I know that women want to mess with nature,” he told me. “They get surgeries and do things so that they can’t get pregnant. I want to make sure you haven’t done anything like that. You would need to tell Jimmy and he’d have to figure out what to do.”
I felt my heart beat quicker and quicker in my chest. I started to violently shake my head from side to side. My face continued to blush.
“No, not at all,” I said.
“Good,” Charles said, his lips curling into a smile. “It would be a shame for him to have such a good girl like you and she can’t give him any sons.”
“It just takes a bit of time sometimes,” I said.
“You two are having sex, aren’t you?”
I was surprised by his question. I never expected Charles to ask me a question like that. Even more heat rushed up to my cheeks and I felt my jaw drop.
“Y…yeah we are,” my tongue stumbled over the words.
Charles smirked at me and I saw were Tommy got it from. It caused a shiver to run up my spine and I pulled even harder on the sleeves of my sweater.
“That’s good,” Charles told me. “You’re right though. Sometimes it does take a bit of time, but just remember about how patient we’ve been with you. Patience can run thin quickly.”
I nodded my head and bit down on my lip as I thought of his threat. I had no one idea what Charles or Jimmy would do to me if I wasn’t giving them children. That’s one of my main jobs to do for Jimmy and I can’t even do it correctly.
“I will remember,” I said quickly.
“That’s good, Juliet,” he said. “Now get upstairs and spend time with Jimmy.”
“Thank you,” I said, just happy to get away from this conversation.
“Have a nice night,” he told me as he grabbed his book again.
I hurried up the stairs and down the hallway to our room. The door was closed, so I softly knocked on it as I opened it. I walked in to see Jimmy lying across his bed with a book in his hands. He threw it to the side when he saw me and cocked his head to the side to motion for me to come over.
“Where were you?” he asked me.
“Your Dad was talking to me,” I told him.
“Okay,” his lips lifted into a faint smile. “Come over here.”
I walked over towards Jimmy and he reach out and grabbed my hips. He pulled me down onto the bed and smashed his lips against mine. He pulled the zipper down on my sweater and pulled it off of me as his hot breath filled my mouth.
I couldn’t stop myself from thinking about Charles’s threat. Their patience was running thin. I wondered how much time I had left. I prayed that it would be soon. It had to be.
