The girls and I had spent the rest of the day inside to protect ourselves from the cold bitter air. I wrapped my finger around a cup of tea Lindsay had given me and sat down at the table. I had caught a glimpse of the men playing baseball out in the yard. The baby, Theo, was swing in a little carriage down on the floor by Lindsay’s feet.
We had spent the day talking about our daily lives. We talked about cleaning and we shared tips on cooking.
We got up at one point and began cooking. I was peeling potatoes as Emme stood beside me dicing vegetables. We told jokes and the time seemed to fly by. It was much different to when I was home alone. The day dragged on and on until Jimmy came back inside.
Lindsay began to set the plates on the large table in the dining room. Once she had finished, she went outside. I saw her through the window run across the grass towards Gabe. She jumped up onto Gabe’s back and wrapped her arms around his neck. I could see her giggle as he spun them around.
She must be telling them that dinner is ready. When she slid down Gabe’s back, he unzipped his sweater and wrapped it around her. He snaked his arm around her back and kissed her before she turned around and ran back into the house.
“They’re coming,” she announced as she walked through the door.
I kept looking outside to see the men walking towards the house. Theo started to cry and scream. I turned around to see Lindsay was rocking him as she started to shush him, trying to calm him down. She started to walk towards me and his face was bright red and tears streaked his cheek. I noticed that there was a bottle in one of her hands.
“Julie, can you do me a favour?” she asked. I knew what was coming. “I’ve got to go help Jenny, so can you feed Theo?”
I didn’t have time to answer before she shoved her son into my arms. I held the awkward weight as I felt my heart pound in my chest. I had never really held a baby before and I was scared I was going to drop him. She handed me the bottle and turned away and walked away quickly.

Theo was kicking out his legs and arms as he continued to scream. I bounced him up and down in my arms, thinking that was going to calm him down a bit. I balanced his weight in one arm and brought the bottle up to his lips.
His screams were quieted as he began to suck on the bottle. His little hands grabbed the bottle and he began to eat. I was afraid to move him in case he would start to scream again. My hair hung down and was brushing along his forehead. I tried to shake my hair over my shoulder but I couldn’t.
The door creaked as the guys walked in. When Jimmy saw Theo and I, his face light up. His lips lifted into one of the biggest smiles I have ever seen. He walked over and brushed that piece of hair behind my shoulder, and I felt him slip his arm around my waist.
“You look good like that,” he whispered to me. I wasn’t sure it is either not to disturb Theo, or that he didn’t want any of his family to hear.
“Lindsay, just handed him to me,” I whispered back.
“You’re going to be great with our sons,” he told me. He kissed the side of my temple, right above my ear, and tightened his arm around me. “I feel like it’s going to be soon.”
“You do?” I asked and then bit down on my lip.
I wasn’t allowed to ask anything, but it just seemed to slip out. I looked up at him to see that he was still smiling; he didn’t seem mad. I couldn’t stop myself from letting my lips curl into a smile.
“I really think so,” he confirmed. “You’re all settled in so this is the next big thing we need to do together.”
I turned my head even more so that Jimmy could lightly brush his lips against mine. It was easy for me to think that Theo was ours. He sat so happily in my arms as Jimmy kissed me. My heart was beating quickly again, but it wasn’t from fear. Instead, it was because I felt so happy.
Jimmy pulled away from me and I heard somebody clear their throat. We both looked forward to see Emme standing there. Everyone else was gone and I assumed they were in the dining room and beginning to eat.

“Now, you two are absolutely adorable, but I have to tell you guys that we’re eating now,” she said. Her voice was always so upbeat and happy. I wondered what she would sound like if she was angry. “So you better scadattle into the dining room before the food runs out.”
“We’ll be there in a second,” Jimmy told her.
“The longer you wait, the more it gets cold,” she warned us as she walked into the dining room.
We followed her.
--
After we had dinner it was already dark outside. We sat around the table joking and they talked about the past. I kept subconsciously rubbing my belly. There was the possibility that I was already pregnant, but I knew that I most likely wasn’t. It wouldn’t be long though.
When it got later, we said goodbye and went back to Taylor and Emme’s home. Jimmy and Taylor talked in the front seat while I stared at Emme. She was twisting her fingers into her curls while staring out of the window. She was humming and would mumble a few words to herself, but I could never understand them.
Once we got to the house, I opened up the door and helped her get out of the back of the truck. She kept her fingers tightly laced through mine while we walked to the front door. She yawned and Taylor wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
“We should get you to bed,” Taylor said.
“Most likely,” she said leaning in her head so that she can rest it on Taylor’s shoulder. Her fingers were still through mine, causing me to be a little bit closer to them than I was comfortable with.
“We probably should be heading to bed soon too,” Jimmy said.
Taylor opened up the door and Emme let go of my hand. She wrapped her arms around me and I felt that awkward bump in between us. I was afraid to hug her too tight and hurt her baby.
“Good night, Julie,” she told me. “I’ve loved spending the day with you and I can’t wait for tomorrow. You two try to get to sleep once you’re in bed and not do much else.”
I could see Taylor over Emme’s shoulder laugh and shake his head. He pinched the bridge of his nose and I heard Jimmy chuckle behind me.
“Don’t worry,” Jimmy said continuing to chuckle. “We won’t be keeping you up.”
Emme started to laugh and I nervously did. I could feel the heat rushing up to my cheeks. This wasn’t something I had ever heard them talk about.
We all said good night and Emme and Taylor went upstairs and we followed behind him. As soon as Jimmy had closed the door he wrapped his arms around me from behind and started kissing my neck. It caught me off guard and I started to giggle. He shuffled us forward and then when we got near the bed he twirled me around and sat me down on the edge of the bed. He got down on his knees so that we were at the same level.
“I told you that you were going to love my family,” he said, his lips lifting up into another big smile. He started to rub his hands up and down the top of my thighs.
“Yeah, they’re nice,” I said.
“I know you had fun,” he told me.
“I did.” I leaned in closer to him and whispered to be certain that no one else in the house could hear us. “Emme is a bit of a chatterbox though.”
Jimmy bit down on his lip to stop himself from laughing. He quickly rested his forehead on my knee before looking back up at me.
“I’ve noticed that,” he whispered back.
He got up off of his knees and leaned in to kiss me. I ran my hands up his chest and he patted the top of my thigh.
“Let’s get to sleep,” he told me. “I have a feeling tomorrow is going to be even better than today.”

The Errant Otherworlder Watanabe
“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes and trucks whom transport men to other worlds.” Meet our titular protagonist Haruto Watanabe, a man who has all the markings of a good protagonist for a generic portal fantasy story. As an overworked office worker, to escape from the grips of crippling capitalist alienation, he had taken up to reading many stories where young men like him were transported to other worlds and enjoyed their lives at a most leisurely pace. Armed with genre-awareness and (what he believes to be) a marketable personality which would make him an easy audience self-insert, he longed for the day the isekai express would take him to his long-awaited adventure to another world. When the fateful day came, where the fair yet harsh mistress that is the fabled truck took Watanabe on one last date to the other side, he was most ready to escape his previous life, ready to embark on an errant so great he’d be most overpowered, his heroics so exceptional and his harem so vast that they would barely fit ten or twenty volumes of an overly long novel made by a desperate author looking for quick cash. Lo and behold however, Watanabe instead found himself in a low fantasy world which lacked severely in the department of any game-like systems, cheat skills or easily charmed damsels in distress. In a setting so antithetical to his established genre savviness or any attempts at power fantasy, how will a man like Watanabe, lacking in strength, wits and courage, manage to survive in a land most foreign to him? This is my first time trying to share to the wider world what I’ve written, and I hope you’ll enjoy reading the errantry of Watanabe as much as I enjoy writing about them. I'll be posting one chapter per week on Sundays, along with extra chapters whenever I get the chance to write more than usual.
