《Baseball Princess》Chapter 17: Why the Hell

At lunch, I sat between Daniel and Tommy.

"I was a pretty great guy," Daniel told me.

"And you can still be. I'm not saying you have to be exactly like that, but be whomever you want to be. Think of it as a chance to start over. With maybe not as many privledges," I said the last sentence forcefully as Tommy wrapped his arm around me.

Daniel laughed, and said, "We'll see."

I turned to Tommy to see if he needed anything. He smiled at me, then kissed my cheek. Clearly, he's jealous of Daniel. But why?

"Lins, here's your phone," Daniel said, handing it to me with his casted arm.

"Thanks," I replied, thanks in more ways than one.

"Hold up, why the hell did Tommy just kiss Lins?" Mark asked, waving his fork at us.

"We're dating now," Tommy said, smiling at me and hugging me.

I forced a smile back. I guess I'm not in the mood for anything lovey-dovey.

"Alright, but same rules still apply," Mark said, then he resumed eating his lunch.

"I have to go make up some work. See you guys at practice," Daniel said, getting up to throw away the rest of his food.

A few classes later, and practice came. Ben was finally cleared, seeing as he got his cast of yesterday. He wasn't allowed to play in games for another week, though.

Just Daniel sat on the bench with me. He won't be able to even practice for a month, according to the doctor. Must have to do with his brain damage.

Me, on the other hand, still have an ankle brace on. I got rid of the crutches as soon as I could. It's still hard to walk, and it hurts, but I'm used to it. A few more weeks, and I'll be reduced to tape!

As for my ribs, they recommend I be careful. Only sleep on my back, which sucks butt since I always sleep on my sides. Little physical activity, which is alright since I sit out of gym.

"Tommy seems awfully possessive," Daniel said, observing them warm up.

"Yeah, well, it was more of my sisters' idea. They manipulated me to forget about you," I said, truthfully.

"Harsh, I'm a good guy," Daniel replied, chuckling.

"So did you look at anything, other than the video?"

"Yeah. Pictures, text messages, other videos, the whole thing," Daniel responded.

Guess this'll be more like a heart-to-heart, honest conversation.

"I figured you would," I said, "did you learn anything?"

"Other than I was pretty careless, not really. I do remember getting ice cream now. I payed, got a chocolate with sprinkles, and you got a vanilla with oreos?"

"Impressive. And, correct. Good job," I replied.

"I planned to look through my phone during practice," Daniel added.

"Then let's do it together, I want to see it, too."

We pulled up his pictures, and scrolled through. There was a ton of me, smiling, frowning, laughing, everything. He took all those without me knowing?

"Wow."

"There's a video," Daniel said, pushing play and turning the volume up.

"Don't flatter yourself," My voice said. I was laughing.

It was the time we went swimming. His mom must've recorded it. Good thing, too.

"What does that even mean?" Daniel's voice said.

Then I attempted to shove him, but he pulled us down together. I came up, then swam away. As I was running, Daniel caught me.

We laughed, and he carried me. Then it ended.

"Do you want to hang out this weekend?" Daniel asked, looking up from the phone to meet my eyes.

"It's only Monday, I don't know if I have plans this weekend," I replied.

"Alright. That's fair," Daniel said.

We say in silence until practice was over. After Tommy got out of the locker room, he wrapped his arm around me and kissed my forehead. Then he drove me home.

"There's a party on Saturday," Tommy said, breaking the silence.

"Is there going to be alcohol?" I asked, cautiously.

"I think so. But don't worry, athletic code prevents us from drinking," he replied.

"And you want me to go?" Tommy nodded. "Fine. But you have to pick me up and drop me off and NO drinking, I don't have my license yet."

Tommy smiled, and parked the car in my driveway. I blew him a kiss goodbye and went inside.

It's only Monday. Yeesh.

My siblings were watching television in the living room. Mom was making dinner, and dad was probably in their bedroom changing out of his work clothes, as always.

I went up to my room to reread my english essay. Just to make sure I didn't screw it up.

"Lindsey? Can you come down for a minute?" Mom yelled up to me.

"Coming!" I replied, hopping down the stairs. "What's up?"

"Honey, grandma passed away last night. The visitation is on Saturday," she said.

I felt like a huge bomb was dropped on ny chest. I may be in love with Daniel, but he didn't die. My grandma, she was my childhood.

And she's not coming back.

I ran back upstairs and cuddled under my blankets. Then my phone vibrated.

"Hello?" I said into it.

"Hey, Lins, it's Daniel. How's it going?"

"Danny, my grandma. She died last night. Do you remember coming to the hospital with me after swimming in the pool?"

"Vaguely. When's the funeral?"

"Visitation," I corrected, "and it's Saturday. How about you come with me? Does that count as hanging out?"

"I'll be there. Just text me the details. So, I was told you had an english assignment and you did it on the bonds of a team. Any chance I can read it?"

"Maybe," I giggled, rubbing a tear off my cheek.

"I'll take my chances. Alright, now to the reason I called. I had a flashback to a time when we were at a lake, under a boat. Did that happen?"

"Yeah, it was at the team trip. We rode together to the center of the lake with the team, and we were the last in the water. You tipped us over, and if I remember right, we had kind of a moment, and then it was awkward, so we got out and then joined the guys."

"Wow, so that goes a ways back," Daniel said.

"Actually, I have a question for you. One time, you told me that you've loved me since middle school," I paused, "is it true?"

"I do remember middle school pretty well, and I do remember thinking about you a lot. In middle school terms, I think that counts as love."

I laughed. "That counts for something, right?"

"You're dating Tommy now."

"Oh, yeah. Listen, the english paper isn't due until June 5th, so maybe I'll bring it to practice next week," I said, changing the subject.

"Why not this week?"

"I'm still proofreading. We may be close, but no one, not even you, can read it until I'm positive that it's perfect," I replied.

"You sound like an author," Daniel joked.

"An author, huh? You know, I've never thought about what career I want once I graduate, or what college I want to go to."

"How about after I read it, I'll tell you if I think you should be an author or not?" He suggested.

"And what if I want to be something else?"

"I'm all ears."

I laughed. "Silly. Well, I have to get back to crying about my gram. Goodnight, see you tomorrow."

"Goodnight, Lins. Sleep tight, and don't let the bed bugs bite."

I muttered, "So cheesy," before hanging up.

I looked at the papers sitting on the table beside my bed. It looked as good as I could get it, long enough to get full credit. No grammatical errors, to my knowledge. Truly perfect.

I'll still wait until next week to show Daniel. I don't know why, but it feels right.

Tommy texted me around ten, saying "goodnight beautiful" then the kiss with the heart emoji. I smiled, and realized I'm torn between too many people.

I love Tommy, but I still love Daniel.

I need to take my own advice; you'll always end up with the person you're meant to be with. Always.
