《Hex [h.s]》Chapter Sixty-six

The sound of clanking metal startled me, I looked at the man unlocking the cell door with wide eyes. Realizing it was Felix, I stood up from the hard mattress. They probably told him to get me out of this place, I don't belong here! "If you are hungry, I'm guessing you are happy to hear from me that it is dinner time." Dinner time?

At the thought of food, my stomach growled in hunger. I nod, "Yes please." Taking a hold of my arm, he stuffed a lot of keys into his pocket and guided me out of the lifeless cell. As we walked down the hallway, the floor dirty, some rats were scurrying here an there, I couldn't help but grimace at the state of it. When I get out of here, I'll probably tip someone off that this mental institution needs to be shut down due to its uncleanliness and how they let prison people who are not even insane.

Entering a door, the hallway here seems inviting, the walls colorful and the floors were tidy unlike the hallway I went through. "Here is the cafeteria." Felix said, opening the door for me to enter. The amount of people who were admitted here surprised me, even teens and some kids were here, waiting in line that doesn't seem to move.

"Enjoy dinner, your assisting nurses will be here to guide you." With that, he closed the door, like a reflex, I turn around to open the door again but I found it to be locked. Great. Facing the cafeteria once again, I swallowed before making my way to the line. A few patients stared at me, the jumpsuit that I still wore probably attracted their attention towards me. Ignoring them, I continued my way and went to the end of the line. Grabbing a tray, I waited for my turn which took time.

About to give up, I sighed loudly in relief and to let out my frustration once it was my turn. I stared at the porridge that the woman placed on my tray, it didn't look delicious nor it look like it could fill my stomach. Heading towards an empty table with a glass of water, I poked the porridge with my spoon. Taking a spoonful of it, I decided to give it a try.

Yuck! I grimaced, starting to choke I grabbed the glass filled with water and drank vigorously, washing the disgusting taste off my mouth. The porridge tasted like cardboard, soggy cardboard. I pushed the tray away, my appetite disappeared. There is no way I am eating that thing, even if I have to starve to death.

My gaze fell on a nurse walking towards me, a small smile on her face. "Hello, I am Abigail, you must be Miss Mackenzie." She said once she reached me, her uniform a bit irritating to the eyes. A thought came to me, maybe this girl will understand my plight and talk sense to her superior. "Hello Abigail, there must be some kind of mistake. I am not insane, I don't know why I was transfered her by the police."

She slightly laughed, causing me to stare at her in bewilderment. Why is she laughing? Did I say something funny? "Oh Miss Mackenzie, you tell the most funniest jokes!" Funny? You think being prisoned in a cell while people look at you like you are insane is funny? Wait until I whack your head with this tray of mine, let's see if you still think it is funny.

"If you are finished with your dinner, I'll escort you back to your cell." Leaving me on my own once again, I lowered my head when I noticed some of the men seated a few feet away staring at me. The thing unsettling there is that their eyes were clouded in lust, excitement and something else I couldn't pinpoint. It made chills run up my spine, I shuddered.

Think it's time to go back to the cell and call it a day. I stood up hurriedly and start to walk briskly to find the nurse named Abigail. The men stood up from their chairs, my heartbeat accelerating. Approaching me, I tried to find a way out of it, but they trapped me in a small circle. "Hello pretty lady, where are you going?" Oh no, not this again!

I didn't answer, the tallest man took hold of my hand, pulling me towards him. "Are you mute? Talk pretty lady." Shaking my head at them, I start searching for anybody to help me. Laughter slipped pass through their lips, I look at them ridiculously. "What's so funny?" I retorted hotly, tired of people laughing at me with no reason at all. They stopped and glared at me, "Oh, so the pretty lady does talk. A bit feisty too."

I fought the urge to roll my eyes, "Please just leave me alone." I mumbled, instead of listening to my pleas, they snorted. Obviously. "Come on, pretty girl give me some sugar." The man, who I think is their leader, urged me forward. I grimaced, my hands fisting on my sides in anger, "No."

"You're obviously new here sweetheart, let me give you a little tip." Grabbing the collar of my jumpsuit, he pulled me forward until we were nose to nose. "No one denies us, or even mess with us. I suggest you to follow if you wanna survive." His breath was foul, I turn my head away in disgust. Eyeing a fork, I grab it from the table and stabbed his arm with it. He cried out in pain, releasing me. I fell to the floor with a loud grunt, the rest of his friends stared at me in horror then in anger. "Why you little b.itch!"

I stuck my tongue at him and ran for my life when they started to chase me to avenge their leader. I began to run, attracting a few nurses who to, chased me. I ran out of the cafeteria and down the halls, gasping once I saw the men right behind me. Turning to another corner, I yelled at the nurses who were busy, to get out of my way, they stared at me in surprise.

I started screaming once I was tackled to the ground, moaning in agony when my newly healed leg began to throb in pain. "Get up! Get up! Get him away from her!" Panting, I was pulled up by male nurses while the rest of them held the insane men back.

"What's going on here?" The old woman that I saw the moment I got here, demanded. Hands on the waist, she approached us with an air of authority. "Ma'am, she stabbed Cliff with a fork!" One of the men who tackled me said, pointing to their leader who was hissing in pain as he tried to sit down. With judging eyes, she sniffed in disdain, "Very well, place the newcomer at the basement. She'll learn not to cause trouble while she's here."

A bit hesitant at first, but a single glare from the woman made Felix drag me to the door while I stated at the men who chuckled at me, mockingly waving goodbye. "Where are you taking me?" I asked Felix, who shooed anyone who was on our way. "You should've stayed out of trouble." He scolded in a small tone, opening a metal door. I looked down at the stairs that lead to the basement, which seems to go on and on.

"Felix!" He turned to address another fellow nurse. "Yes? What is it Jess? I'm in a bit of a hurry here."

"Sorry, but can you ask the janitor to clean room 278? Jeremiah has been transfered you see, went on a rampage a few hours ago." Nodding, we continued our way.

We started to go down the stairs, cold air blew past me, the hairs on my arms stood. "Man, I hate going down here." Felix grumbled in a small voice, taking the keys from his pocket as we approached another metal door. The moment the for was opened, I stared at the dimly-lighted hall in front of me. The sound of groaning, moaning, and screeching reached my ears, it made my nervousness rise.

"W-what is this place?"

He didn't answer my question. Gesturing me to go first, I entered the door hesitantly. "Go on," Felix urged and closed the door behind him before joining me. "Follow me."

I did so as I was told, following behind him with great caution. Something was banging against one of the metal cells that we passed by, causing suspicion to over come me. What was that? "Keep moving," Felix whispered. It was then that I stood in front of a widely opened cell door. "Get in," He urged, but when I didn't, he pushed me inside.

Without another word, he locked the metal door, the room fell into darkness. Not even a bit of light. The room was even stuffy and hot, I felt the walls with my hands. The walls smelled like rust, and they were warm. What am I doing here? Why did they put me here? I have done nothing wrong! A lot of questions ran through my mind, when the banging continued. Then screeching, and moaning. Weird and horrifying sounds echoed through the walls.

"You better keep still. Follow my advice and you'll survive." Someone whispered, it made me jump. "Who is it?" I asked in the darkness, not quite sure whether I was imagining it. "Nobody." The whisperer answered, "It's best that you don't know me."

"Then, why should I listen to you?"

"You have a point." My fingers graze into something cold, and metal. Poking my fingers with it, I realized that it was small bars that are screwed into the wall. Air was coming through it and I guess this is where the whispers come from. "So, who are you?"

"You must have heard me from those nosy people upstairs."

"You are the man? The man named Jeremiah, right?" Hearing a chuckle coming from the other side of the wall, I knew I was right. "Yes, it's me. I am Jeremiah."

"What are you doing down here?" I questioned, sitting down near the bars. "Well, same as you. I attacked an nurse because he tried to inject me with a syringe. What about you? The atmosphere not lively enough for you?"

"No, I don't even know what I did for them to place me here. Exactly, what is this place? It smells like foot here."

"You better get used to it, since I have the feeling that they'll keep us here for awhile." Sighing deeply, I rest my head against the wall, my eyes searching the darkness. Feeling cold, I hugged myself as I shivered. Another sound of banging startled me once again, this time it was louder. "What is that? What's making that banging sound?" I whispered frantically.

"I don't know, it's been like that since I arrived."

"Jeremiah," I mumbled a bit louder to shake the fear off my mind. "Are you really insane? They didn't send you here by mistake?" Silence. This time, the sound of banging stopped, I held my breath for a few minutes. "It stopped, Jeremiah."

I frowned when I didn't receive an answer, "Jeremiah?" Someone let out an ear piercing screech, it sounded masculine and it was just next to me. My eyes grew wide, clutching the small bars in alarm. "Jeremiah? Are you alright?" Liquid gushed out, wetting my hands. I brought it to my nose to smell and figure out what it was. I gasp, crawling away. It smelled familiar.

Blood.

I went back to the bars, "Jeremiah? Are you alright? Jeremiah! Please answer!" Only silence. I began to scream in fear and worry, tears running down my cheeks. Whatever escaped that cell, it killed Jeremiah. "Help! Help me!"

Suddenly, everything around me turned red. I looked up to see a red bulb flashing, making my surroundings a bit clear. Breathing heavily, the sight of blood on the concrete floor made me nausea no matter how many times I have seen it.

"Help! Help me!"

I stopped short when I heard banging sounds once again, this time coming from just outside my cell door. I let out a sharp gasp when it pounded harder, as of it'll break the door down. Whatever it was, it started to scratch the door with something sharp, hurting my ears. Covering them, I closed my eyes. "Please, just go away!"

I opened my eyes as I stared at the door with huge dents on it. Sweat was rolling down profusely on my forehead, waiting for the door to burst and reveal whatever is behind it. I let out a ear shattering shriek once the door broke down, revealing the horror behind it.

It seemed human, no it wasn't human, it only looked like one. Its jaws were wide, teeth razor sharp, and its eyes were all white. The claws covered in blood and ripped flesh, intestines were even hanging on it. The sight was enough to make me puke. It snarled at me, slowly making its way towards me. My back was glued to the wall, wanting to get away from the creature at all cost.

The hideous creature let out a screech, its claws reaching for me. I silently cried as I continued to dodge, sobbing once it caught the end of my jumpsuit. "No! No! Let go of me!" I screamed, grabbing the floor once it pulled me, my nails painfully digging on the floor. As I sobbed uncontrollably, the creature dig its sharp claws on my leg, I cried in pure pain. A stinging sensation ran up my leg, I hissed.

Just as it was about to claw my face, something flew fast and hit the creature on the head causing it to fly a few feet away. I look up with teary eyes at the thing that just saved me from death, well, someone. Wasting no time, Harry stated removing the head off the creature. It was quite a struggle, the creature tried to get away from Harry but had little success.

In one move, the creature's head was tossed to the side like garbage. Wiping his blood covered hands on the wall, Harry made his way towards me in long strides. Staring at my wounded leg, he shook his head. "This wouldn't have happened to you of you just listened to me and stayed."

I agreed.
