《Hex [h.s]》Chapter Sixty-five

The ride to the police station was not as quiet as I thought it would be. The police scanner keeps buzzing all the time, and mother was also talking to someone over the phone, probably informing dad that she found me. F.uck this, I shouldn't be here right now. I should be on my way, out of this town. The car screeched into a stop, I almost fell of my seat. The police officer and my mother got off the car first, I waited for the man to open the door to let me out.

"You're making a big mistake," I grumbled softly when he grab my arm, pulling me out. The handcuffs on my hands were annoying me to no end as we walk inside the building. I caught a few people staring at us, I lowered my head to avoid eye contact.

"Where did find her?" A female officer ask, her eyebrows furrowed. Entering a room which only consisted of two chairs and a table, the policeman pointed at the seat. "Sit down and wait." He said and walk out, I did as I was told. My gaze shifted from my hands to the mirror, base on the movies I have seen, it's a two way mirror. It was obvious to me the moment I entered the room. This is an interrogation room.

"So, you're Lucinda Mackenzie. Never dreamed that a girl your age is capable of going against the law." I turn to see a middle-aged man, papers and a pen in his hands. Brushing back his thinning brown hair, he eyed me with those grey colored eyes of his. "I am Emman Samuels. Chief officer of this police department." Sitting down across me, he continued to eye me closely. "You seem to have cause a lot of trouble Miss Mackenzie. Now, even if you don't want to, I request that you cooperate. I'm going to ask you questions, better tell the truth cause everything you say will be held against you."

Shifting in my seat, I watch as he took something in his pocket and place it on the take. It was a plastic, but inside it was a burnt firecracker. The same firecracker that I used to ward off Harry back in the old house. "Investigators found this after the fire was put out. People who lived next door heard something explode before the house was on fire. Did you set the house on fire purposely?"

I swallowed, licking my lips and sat up straight. "No. I didn't want to set the house on fire, it was an accident." He cocked an eyebrow at me in suspicion. "An accident? Base on what the investigators say, it was done deliberately. Do you know what is arson?"

"I told you, it was an accident. I didn't want to set the house on fire, how could that be arson?"

"Then why light a firecracker inside the house? What is your explanation for that?" He questioned. Trust me, you won't even believe me if I tell you. "I was warding something off." I answered, this made him confused. "Warding off something? Who would ward something with a firecracker?"

It does sound stupid and crazy. Maybe I should just tell him. "If I'll tell you, I have a hunch you won't believe me at all." Curious, he leans forward, "Tell me Miss Mackenzie." I looked at the two-way mirror before facing the man seated across me. "A demon."

His laughter echoed the walls, I watch him warily. "A demon? That's rich! I think the next thing you'll tell me a zombie killed Mr. Randy Smith!" I felt my heart pounding on my chest at the mention of Randy. Coughing and clearing of throats followed as Chief Samuels gain his stern posture. "Miss Mackenzie, demons and other mythical creatures don't exist in this world."

"But it's true!"

He shook his head, mumbling something under his breath. "On other matters, Randy Smith's body was found on the outskirts of town. People began to complain why it was smelly, and it turns out a body was buried there." He stares at me for a moment, I stared back. "He was last seen at your residence, Miss Mackenzie. I believe there is nobody else to suspect killing him but you."

Pulling out a picture from a folder, he placed it on the table for me to see. I leaned over to look at it. "This is a picture of Randy Smith after the autopsy." I felt like vomiting at the picture, instead of seeing a face, only bones and a bit of flesh was left. "Fingerprints were found and scanned, by the help of your parents, well all the evidences we gathered pointed towards you."

I remained silent, waiting for him to ask. He sighs, rubbing his hands and asked. "Why did you kill your boyfriend?"

"Well, who wouldn't defend themselves from being harassed? He tried to rape me officer, and I defended myself." I answered, anger slowly rising within me. "I trusted him but he made me regret it. He tried to force himself to me, and I didn't liked that. So I defended myself, he ended up being killed." Tears rolled down my cheeks, I quickly wiped them away. "Before we started dating, I told him he was the only one who understood me. No one else did. He'd come and talk to me about his family issues. I thought, he understood me."

I thought we understood each other.

"But why kill him? When you could just report him to the police?"

"It all happened too fast, I guess I was caught up at the moment." I softly mumbled, playing with my hands. "You know, you could have told somebody about it. Your parents are always there for you. You were missing for days, am I correct?" I lowered my head as I recall the events.

Getting shot. At the brink of death. Matt's head floating above the ice cold water. Blood. Oh Lord.

"If you need consulting-"

"I'm fine." I quickly answered, not wanting to talk to anybody at the moment. "Sometimes, after a traumatic experience, talking can help-"

"I said 'I am fine'." I hissed loudly, causing him to be surprised at my reaction. Chief Samuels nod, "In that case, I have one question left for you Miss Mackenzie. Where were you these pass few days? It was reported to me that you disappeared while you were in school. At the same time, six highschool boys were murdered by the lake. The same time you went missing. Nobody saw you after that murder."

"Are you implying that I killed them?" He was silent for a few seconds, I smirk. "Those boys, one of them was the mayor's son am I correct?" He nods. I chuckled softly, "Matt, he tried to kill me. I was drowning on cold water, his head was floating above me as I recall. He is a bully, he shouldn't have leave jail. But you let him."

"You know who killed him?"

"Definitely."

"Who? Who is he then?"

"That's the problem, you can't catch him. He's invincible." I wanted to laugh at his face when I saw his reaction to my answer. "His name, is Harry Styles. And he is a demon. The demon who killed Matt and the rest of his friends. But I'm thankful he did, Matt deserve to die."

"Miss Mackenzie, are you okay?" He stared at me in worry, like I have lost my mind. I smiled at him sweetly, "Never been better."

He took the recorder and the rest of his things. Standing up from his seat, he looked at me in alarm before leaving the room. I couldn't help but laugh loudly, how naive and how stupid they were not to believe me. I closed my eyes briefly when pain erupted in my stomach.

"Miss Mackenzie," I looked up to see the same officer who brought me here. "Come with me." I stood up, walking slowly towards him as I clutch my stomach. Taking a hold of my arm, he guided me again to another room. "Here, change into this."

I stared at the orange jumpsuit and sighed. Removing the handcuffs off my hands, I went inside the room to change into the orange jumpsuit. After that, I handed my things to the police officer and waited for further instructions.

A female police officer came towards me. "Lucinda Mackenzie, this way please." I was lead to another room, the woman placed ink on my thumb before pressing it against a paper with my name on. It was a criminal file. "Please wait for your turn." The woman said, gesturing towards a room where a cameraman was taking pictures of men in the same orange jumpsuit.

"Next!"

I stood up and went inside. I was handed a board, my name was written on it, the date, what crime I did and the police department. I stood in front of the camera as the man clicks away. After a few minutes of standing and doing different angles that the man wanted, I was escorted to an empty cell.

"You have to wait here for a few hours to be transfered." The man said, "In the meantime, your parents want to talk to you." As if on cue, my parents walked in. The man nodded at them and left. "Dad," I breathed, reaching for his hands. "Lucy, I promise we will get you out of here." Dad said, squeezing my hands tightly, not wanting to let go. "I'll try and get the best lawyer in town, you'll be out in no time. I swear!"

"Dad, I'm scared. Where are they transferring me?"

"I don't know, the chief is in charge of that. We just have to wait for his orders, okay? Don't be scared Lucy, everything's going to be fine." I turn towards my mother, slightly glaring at her. She lowered her head down, seems like she prefers taking interest in her shoes than her own daughter.

"Where were you? You've been missing again," Dad took a hold of my face, taking a good and closer look at me. "Where have you been? I was worried sick." I sighed deeply, removing his hands from my face. "You won't understand if I tell you."

"Please, I'll understand."

"He took me." I mumbled, "He rescued me." Dad furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, "Rescued you? Who?" I bit my lips, well here goes nothing, "Harry, dad. Harry rescued and took me."

"Rescue you from what?" Dad inquires, ignoring who Harry is. "From Matt, dad. He tried to kill me, I was so scared." At the mention of Matt, dad stiffened. His nose flared, eyes wide in anger but he was holding it back.

"Then, why didn't you come back afterwards?"

"I was injured badly, I couldn't walk. I had to heal for awhile, then I decided to comeback and see you." And then, I was arrested. "Dad, I don't want to go and leave you." I sobbed, he shook his head. "I don't want to leave you to, but you have to be brave and wait until we go to the court."

Few moments later, another policeman entered. "I'm sorry, but you have to go. Visiting hours are almost over, and Mackenzie here needs to be transfered in awhile."

Dad clearly wanted to protest, even yell at an officer, but he knows it's no good. "Don't worry Lucinda, we will get you out. Have faith." I nodded, "Goodbye dad," I mumbled, waving goodbye as they were escorted out. Dad stared at me as they walked away, I let out a soft sob, the door was shut tightly. Falling to the cold floor, I rested my head against the wall.

I waited for something to happen, but nothing came. The small window let the faint sunlight in, the only source of light in the small cell. It felt like years before the door opened once again, I sat up and stared at the officer who is unlocking the cell. "It's time to go Mackenzie."

He handcuffed my hands once again, taking my arm, he guided me out. "What time is it?" I asked, he looked at his watch. "It's three in the afternoon." He guided me out of the building, a black van was waiting. "Is this Miss Mackenzie?" The driver asked, the officer nodded.

Opening the back, he let me inside the van, locking it outside. The van roared to life and started to drive away from the police department. I peeked through the window to see where we were heading. Growing bored, I sat down and stared at the old seats of the van.

I wish I could just go back in time and undo all these madness. I should be back home, none of this would've happened if we didn't move in this hell hole. I started to cry softly, accepting the fact that I'm going to jail. Probably forever if the judge says so.

You shouldn't have left the mansion! My subconscious says, You should've stayed with Harry, put up with his ways than sit in a cell until you rot. You should've used your head!

Will Harry even get me? No, he wouldn't. He'll probably laugh at my face. Besides, he's busy doing whatever a demon like him would do. And Grace? She's dead if Harry finds out.

I let out a gasp in surprise when the van lurch into a stop, I almost fell out of my seat. It took a few seconds and a few cusses from the driver before the door was opened. "We're here." He announced in a gruff voice. I squinted, my eyes adjusting to the light. The cold winter air hit my face, as I got off the van.

I grimaced at the building in front of me. It was old, it looked like it was about to fall apart. What kind of prison is this? My jaw dropped once I saw the words written above the building.

Blackwell Mound Mental Institution

"Excuse me," I told the driver, who looked at me in boredom. "I should me in prison, not in a mental institution." He shrugged, "Well can't argue with the chief. He told me you were insane and needed to be place in a mental institution. Don't worry, you'll be fine here."

I was about to scream at him, how wrong he was to drive me here when I heard someone clear hear throat behind me. "Mackenzie? Lucinda Mackenzie?"

"Yes Ma'am, this is her."

I turn to face an old woman, in her fifties I guess. She stared at me through her thin glasses, wrinkles in her face. Her white uniform clean and ironed well. "Felix!" She called in her high-pitched voice, it almost made my ears go numb. "Yes?" A middle age man went up to her. She pointed her polished finger at me, "Send her up."

"Let's go," He told me, holding my arm and lead me inside the building. My boots making crunching noises against the snow as I climbed up the stairs. The moment I entered, people stared at me. Why are you staring at me like that? I'm not insane! I just did a crime, I'm not mentally ill! I wanted to yell it out loud, but it wasn't a good idea.

"Maria, can you tell me what number is Lucinda Mackenzie?" Felix inquired, the woman on the desk look at the book in front of her before facing Felix once again. "She's in 274, oh and please be careful on your way up there. Another guy was shipped here, totally crazy I tell you. Mrs. Foreman warned not to provoke him."

"Thanks Maria."

He pulled my arm and I followed behind him. Women in white uniform went up and down the stairs, either holding blankets or a tray of meal. "This way," Felix said, gesturing towards a hallway. As we pass by rooms, I couldn't help but stare the people. Mentally ill people.

"272, 273...274!" Felix smiled, unlocking the door. "This is your room Miss." I couldn't help but widen my eyes at the state of my room. Only consisting a bed that had a pillow and a blanket, next to it was a wooden table. The walls had cracks on it, the wallpaper was teared and I jumped in shock when a rat ran away from us. Are you sure this is my room? I wanted to ask, but I prefer not to. He might transfer me to a much hideous room.

"In you go," He pushed me forward into the room and lock the door. "But why am I here? I am not insane!" I yelled as he start to walk away. "Wait! Felix, I am not insane. There must be some kind of mistake!"

"He's smart not to listen." I turn towards the cell across mine, a woman smiled at me. Her hair was silver, her left eye was damaged and her teeth were close to decaying. "What? I am not suppose to be here." I mumbled, clutching the bars on the door. The woman just laughed at my words, I stared at her in confusion. Why is she laughing? Did I say something funny?

"Everyone that is admitted to this institution is crazy, what makes you different?" She yelled, cracking up once again. "I am not insane, I don't belong here. There must be a way out." The woman sneered, "There is no way out of this prison little lady, and you should get used to this place."

"What about you? Why are you here?" I ask once she became silent, curious why she's here. "Obviously, they think I'm crazy, what else do you think they'd dump me here?" Her expression suddenly became serious, "Get used to the place, follow orders and you'll be fine. But once you cross the line, they'll whip you. Punish you until you are limp, I suggest you stay put."

"How many years have you been in here?"

A small smile graced her face, "I've been in this cell for thirty years. I still remember they promised my family that they'll do anything to cure my state, but they never did. All of them are lying bastards. But I never did cause a scene once, I never acted like those goats who are too far gone. Who lost the touch of reality. I suggest you do the same, and you'll survive."

Giving up, I walk away from the woman and lay down on the bed which is hard as a rock, including the pillow. I guess there's nothing else to do at the moment. I have to wait until I am called to court, but at the moment I have to do what I always do.

Survive.
