I want to write a serious story, with good grammar, and characters that are ACTUALLY like themselves. Every Hamilton story I see has terrible grammar, lots of people OOC, and/ the format is atrocious. Announcement as of 05 July 2022: I've been diagnosed with some pretty severe nerve damage in my left arm, rendering me unable to write effectively, and as such this story is on hold until it is healed. I am so sorry, and I promise to get back to writing as soon as possible. In the latter half of the 3rd millennium CE, humanity has spread across the stars, inhabiting close to five-hundred worlds across the Orion Arm. Earth has become irrelevant, a historical has-been. The galactic map is dominated by two mega-factions, both controlling vast amounts of territories either through direct control or through their many allies and treaty signatories. The Kingdom of Aurora is the political and economic hegemon despite consisting of only seven inhabited worlds; their strength lies in the Royal Union, an interstellar commonwealth composing an internal market and a common defence pact. These member worlds are myriad and varied, culturally as well as politically, but they all flock to the same banner. The Independent Systems Alliance, spearheaded by the Republic of Elysium, is the ascendant challenger to Aurora and the Union. A pseudo-federal multi-system polity, the Alliance economy and military is rapidly expanding, but at the cost of effective democratic and meritocratic involvement by its people. However, with two superpowers as this, chafing along a common border, and with a constant clamour of polemics, both sides have become convinced the other is constantly preparing for war and are on the look-out for any perceived weakness in their opponent. The predictable result is a huge arms race and a cold war spreading across the stars, requiring only a spark to set the galaxy aflame. Drawn into this game of high stakes are ordinary men and women, their peaceful lives, hopes, and aspirations swallowed by the vortex of conflict and distrust. This is their story. But when the god of death finds that souls are going missing, the souls of champions , and he must find out where these souls are and get them back to where they belong. Sadly, he himself is not allowed to interfere along with the other gods, though that doesn't mean that there is nothing that he can do. He can employ a Champion of his own, one who can find the souls of the champions and bring them to their rightful place. In comes Angelus Myrefall, an orphan who desperately wishes to obtain a class at the Ceremony of Awakening. A class for him could change everything in his life. He could go on adventures, get stronger with every journey, get money to help the orphanage that took care of him all these years. And at the ceremony, he got exactly what he wanted, except he got more than he bargained for. Congratulations! You have been granted a Champion's class from Uwrath, the god of death. Class title: Reaper With this brand new class bestowed upon him by Uwrath, he must complete the job that was given to him by the gods. but first, he needs to learn how to use his abilities at the Champion Academy. These days, Nuri sees more magic, prestige, and adventure than he can handle as he gets swept up in realm-shaking conspiracies and desperate fights for his life. Maybe a boring life wasn’t so bad after all. Disclaimers: 1) Names were mostly chosen through random generators and aren’t necessarily final. If they seem derivative or boring, blame RNG. 2) Skills, Classes, levels, and the entire system is currently a work in progress; please be kind if it’s not very well fleshed out yet. 3) This is the first full-length novel I've set out to write without a single plot point ready. I had nothing in mind other than a recent visit to a hot shop. Molten glass is pretty awesome. 4) Related, I know much less about glass than I’d like. I did some research, but mistakes are bound to happen. If you have a correction, thanks! Please be polite about it. 5) The prose is my experimental attempt at first-person, present tense. I realize it may not be everyone’s preference, but I hope you’ll give it a try anyway!
