《Story Ideas》Mobster
Advertisement
Title: I'm not really sure on this one. Maybe "All-American Mobster"? (You can use your own title, of course.) Or "Chicago Mafia"?
Main Character: A male of 17 years of age
Time period: 1920's (Infamous gangsters come from this period of time); America... Chicago is the main city with the majority of notorious gangs
Background details; mainly about the history behind this story:
-Some renowned mobsters joined gangs at the age of thirteen. (In case you were wondering about age.)
-Violence became more common in the 20's because of the 18th amendment added to the U.S. Constitution. The 18th amendment outlawed the distribution, sale, and consumption of alcohol.
The violence came from this because of speakeasies, a secret place where you could go to buy alcohol. People involved in the stealing of illegal alcohol became involved with crime (gangs, etc.). Therefore, the gangster market grew bigger as more people wanted alcohol, promoting the spread of violence. As Al Capone, infamous gangster, said, "All I do is supply public demand... why not me?"
-Al Capone: Al Capone was the leader of the majority of Chicago mafia, until he was charged of his crimes in 1933. He is responsible for countless murders and bootlegging (illegal trafficking of liquor). He is the most influential crime boss of the 1920's and early 30's.
-Police/law enforcement: The federal law enforcement was underfunded during the 1920's. There was also cases of corruption in the law enforcement. Meaning, mobsters could get out of jail by paying off police. All of these things led to the spread of even more crime.
-Slang: Mobsters have "code names" for certain words. The most important ones, I think, are the words they used for government detective, electric chair, machine gun, counterfeit money, arrest, to flee, and jail.

-Government detective: G man
-Electric chair: Hot squat
-Machine Gun: Tommy (Machine gunner: Tommy man)
-Counterfeit money: queer
-Arrest: Pinch
-To flee: Lam
-Jail: Can; jug
The slang is very important in a book like this, so keep this in mind.
-Character: He grew up on a farm in Illinois (America). He was tried of being a farmer and being poor, as the majority of farmers in the 20's and 30'S were; so he ran away from his family's farm to join a gang in Chicago, where the riches supposedly overflowed for the mobsters. He joined Al Capone's gang after proving his worthiness to Al Capone's henchman (Frank Nitti and Jack McGurn).
Idea (Plot): This will be shorter because of the extensive amount of background information. The boy joined Al Capone's gang of mobsters and goes undercover for them (he learns about the plans the police have; he pretends to be a victim of a crime to gain information on how the police conduct their searches). The main struggle is the gang's fight against the police. You can have the ending play-out as you would like.

Almost a Good Person
A memory, a memory of a boy who wanted more than pain, of a girl who wanted more than death, and an Isle that should not exist. The Isle of Red is a small, unassuming, quiet place. It is just large enough for a college, a small town, and maybe even a few more unusual sorts of places. Of course, the townsfolk practically know each other as family. Flush-faced regulars can be found toasting just about anything in the Briar's Brew, then, a few streets away, the same haggle of older women stationed themselves on their perch as they did every day from one of the few balconies in Central Square. They fuss away now, spouting the usual gossip as they watch us all from on high. Then there is the College here on the Isle of Red. My college. It has been often described as an unusual place by a good deal of people on the mainland. If they only would visit -why I am sure they'll soon have a change of heart, they may even come to find it a quaint sort of place, odd but in the same way a tattered old quilt can be both odd looking and warm, and especially soft. We teach mostly the same sort of disciplines here, with fantastic and absolutely normal professors.I must conclude that I am quite smitten with myself. The stage is set with a level of perfection that would have astonished me in my youth. They are coming. Derek will follow her. He knows the weight of reality too intimately, but she will be his true north if only for a short time. A beacon in the storm to show him the stunning pastels and brightness the sun may yet refract through his thinner, sharper pieces. Theoline will lead as she always has- well not always, not yet. She holds onto questions feverishly tight, that one. Lights them up inside like a new type of fuel without the slightest worry of being burned. She knows... There is but a certain few who can look at a map and find nothing where I stand but the Atlantic Ocean. And still, there is earth beneath me, a noisy pub down the road from me, and several people clucking conspiratorially on a balcony above me. She knows... that the Isle of Red doesn't belong here. Neither, technically, do I. (Hello!
