Chapter 63

Time has gone by very slowly. The tension in the air was thick, not leaving anytime soon as long as we knew that we would be under an attack any moment. A week has gone by but to me, it felt like a month. Zander was finally out of my life, but I wished that things could have ended better, in a civilized manner. Yet, it all ended with blood.

I didn't blame Mason. Not one bit. I knew his protective side kicked in as soon as he saw the gun pointed towards me, yet I wished it ended off differently. But this was fate, and I couldn't change it. You would have thought that after what Mason did, he and I would have argued and split apart. But that didn't happen, instead, we got closer. I knew that if a gun was pointed at him, I would have done the same thing.

During this week Mason hasn't let me out of his sight. He moved all my stuff to his room and now we share a room. He was persistent in having me stay in his room in case of emergencies. I knew he didn't let his guard down one bit. He was always on high alert. Pack warriors surrounded the packhouse and pack borders. We were waiting for something. But that something, I don't know.

I guess a sign or a move. Mason sent his warrior to the place the vampire has told us about, but they found nothing. No vampire nor rogue was to be found. Mason was outraged. There was no sign of any existence. The only explanation was that they fled once they noticed that one of their vampires was with us. To where? I don't know, neither does Mason.

I don't know what Mason did to the vampire that was in the dungeons. For all I know, he could be dead.

I was drastically pulled out of my thoughts when Mason's hand played with my hair. I looked over at him and frowned, seeing the bags that were under his eyes. He looked tired, very tired. He barely slept. I would sleep as he worked and made sure everything was ok.

His dark orbs looked up at me and a lazy smile crawled onto his face. I sighed out and shifted closer to him, grabbing onto his hand.

"Mason?" I whispered.

"Hmm?" He murmured.

"When was the last time you slept?" I wondered. The lazy smile slowly dropped and his lips went in a thin line. He shrugged his shoulders and twirled a strand of my hair around his finger.

"Doesn't matter," he muttered, digging his nose into my hair. "You're all that matters." I held myself from letting out an awe and narrowed my eyes at him. He gave me an innocent look as I shook my head.

"Mason," I breathed out. "You look so tired. Sleep for an hour or something." He shook his head and placed his nose in my neck, inhaling my scent.

"No, it's ok. I can handle without sleep."

I shook my head and held his face in my hands, looking up at him. "Please, for me? You've been working all week. You need a little rest," I pointed out, giving him a pout to try to let him obey. His eyes concentrated on my face before he let out a long, defeated sigh.

"Fine," he murmured, making me smile.

"Great," I exclaimed happily, making him lie down on the bed. "Sleep." He raised his brow and got comfortable, staring at me.

"Bossy," he muttered, the corner of his lips twitching.

I narrowed my eyes at him. "Thick headed," I shot back.

"Stubborn," Mason said.

"Possessive."

"Impossible."

I raised a brow. "Impossible? Is that all you say?" I questioned. He smiled and shrugged his shoulder, grabbing onto my hand and pulling me towards him, making me fall onto his chest.

"Yes, I'm only speaking the truth," he answered. I smiled but shrugged my shoulders.

"Maybe you are." His smile widened and he wrapped his arms around my waist. "Now sleep," I ordered. He nodded his head and I pulled myself out of his arms and stood up, narrowing my eyes at him. He slightly pouted at me, making a small smile appear on my lips.

I opened my mouth, ready to say something when Mason's bedroom door opened and Adam came walking in, making Mason sit up. I raised my brow at him in confusion and he looked between us, before walking closer to me.

"Gia wants you both. She says it's urgent," Adam spoke, making Mason immediately stand up. I frowned and furrowed my brows at what he said. Mason and I walked out of his room and followed Adam towards Mason's office. Adam offered me one last smile before he walked away, leaving Mason and me alone.

Soon, Gia came into sight and we walked inside Mason's office. Gia sat down and looked at both of us. "We need to talk," she spoke. We nodded and sat down, ready for whatever she was about to say.

"What is it? Did you see something?" Mason asked.

Gia nodded. "Yes, I did."

"What did you see?" I questioned. Gia took a deep breath before she spoke.

"Did you ever wonder how the rogues and vampires know your every single move?" Gia asked. Mason nodded.

"Yes. We did," Mason responded. I narrowed my eyes at Gia.

"There is someone in your pack who is going behind your backs," Gia claimed. My frown deepened and so did Mason's.

"Who is it?" Mason asked lowly. Gia looked down at the ground before looking back at Mason.

"Before you find out who it is. You should know that this person isn't doing this on their own will. They were forced to go behind your backs," Gia explained, sparking my curiosity. Mason furrowed his brows and nodded his head.

"Just tell me. Who is it?" Mason questioned aggressively. Gia stood up and walked towards the door, making me frown in confusion. She opened the door and my eyes widened as I saw Kayla. Gia offered her a small smile before patting her back, before she walked away, leaving Mason and I confused.

Kayla walked into the office, closing the door behind her. Mason drastically stood up, narrowing his eyes at her. Her eyes were filled with guilt, especially after she looked at me.

"Kayla?" I whispered. She took a step closer then looked over at Mason.

"I'm sorry, Alpha," she whispered, looking down at the floor. "I'm sorry." Mason's eyes hardened and he took a step closer to her.

"You're the backstabber?" He asked, a low grow emerging from his chest. I grabbed onto his hand, trying to calm him down as I tried to comprehend what was going on. Kayla looked up at us with sad eyes, slowly nodding her head.

"Yes, but it was never my intention. I was forced to do it," she stated, begging me with her eyes to believe her. My frown deepened as those words came out of her mouth. Kayla and I weren't best friends, but I did consider her as a friend. Was everything all a lie from the beginning?

"What do you mean?" I asked. She looked down at the ground before slowly looking up, sadness filling her eyes, unshed tears threatening to escape. She opened her mouth but nothing escaped it. After a moment of gathering herself together, she finally spoke.

"They took him, threatened me if I didn't inform them about your every move then they'd kill him. They made me cross your borders, knowing that Tiana would make you spare my life, then I'd have to tell them everything. Please, believe me," Kayla begged, tears falling down her cheek. "If you don't believe me then ask Gia. She saw it all. I'm not lying."

I furrowed my brows, confusion written on both our faces.

"Who did they take?" Mason asked, stepping closer to her. She inhaled and wiped the tears off her cheeks before she spoke.

"My mate," she answered. "He has been a prisoner for three months. I was left with no choice. I would do anything for him. I was worried that if I told you then they'd kill him."

"Is he still with them?" Mason questioned.

Kayla let out a sigh and shook her head. "No. He was able to escape. He's now in his secret house so the rogues and vampires won't find him." Mason let out a sigh and ran a hand over his face. I looked at Mason then at Kayla. She looked sincere. I knew she was telling the truth, I could tell by her eyes. They were glimmering with pain and sadness.

I understand how she felt. She only wanted to keep her mate safe. If I was in her place, I would have done the same. Besides, as she said, Gia saw it, so she would have known if she was lying. But I was still overwhelmed and shocked.

I gave her a sympathetic smile as Mason nodded his head.

"I won't forget what you've done," he spoke, narrowing his eyes at her. "But I won't punish you because I understand why you had to do it. I would have done the same." His eyes flickered to me, before looking at Kayla. I squeezed his hand then looked back at Kayla.

"So I want you to go back to your old pack, with your mate," Mason finished. I frowned but Kayla nodded.

"I know. Now that my mate is back I have nothing to do with this pack," she whispered, before glancing at me. "Thank you and I'm sorry for everything. I will be going back to my normal life." She smiled at me and hugged me.

I was taken off guard but hugged her back. She must have gone through hell. I didn't blame her for what she did, I'd be too cold-hearted if I did.

She pulled away and smiled up at Mason. Mason nodded at her, wrapping his arm around my waist. "Will you and your mate be ok?" I asked.

She nodded.

"We'll be fine. Thank you."

I softly nodded but remained silent, not knowing what to say. Kayla took a step back before speaking, "I'm going to start packing."

"I'll have my men take you back to your pack," Mason claimed. Kayla offered him a grateful smile and nodded. "Ok, thank you." Mason nodded and then Kayla turned around, walking towards the door. Before she could even place her hand on the doorknob, the door flew open and a worried Gia stood behind it.

I frowned as my eyes laid on her. Mason's hand tightened on my waist as I stiffened. Gia ran into the room, tension thick in the air. Even though we sort of knew what was happening, Mason still spoke. "What's wrong, Gia?"

She took a deep breath, closing her eyes for a moment before opening them. Her eyes were filled with fear and worry, something that made a shiver run down my spine. I held onto my breath, waiting for the words to escape her mouth.

"Tonight, they're coming tonight."
