Chapter 36

My eyes widened at what I heard. I stood behind the door, surprised and confused. The rogue that we encountered yesterday was dead? And that was because he had silver in his system? But why? And how? Who would do that? It was all too confusing and I felt worried.

"Dammit!" Mason growled from inside the office and the next thing I hear is a loud crashing sound.

"What am I going to do now? He was supposed to give me answers! But now he's dead!" Mason yelled out in anger. I flinched from his voice. I remembered yesterday Mason telling the guards to take the rogue to the dungeons for questioning, but now he was dead. Meaning that the questions we had about the constant rogue attack wouldn't be answered.

"Alpha, please calm down. We don't want the members of this pack to be alerted of something that may not be important," the man's voice spoke out. Mason growled and murmured some other words. After a moment of silence, Mason spoke.

"You can go now, I have an important call to make," Mason said.

"What should we do with the body?" The person asked. I heard a growl then another moment of silence.

"Dispose of it. I don't care where, but get rid of it." Mason replied.

"Yes, Alpha."

And with that, the door of his office opened, and I stood there, looking at an angry Mason and at a man who I recognized as the pack doctor. The man looked at me with confusion while Mason looked at me with wide eyes, knowing that I heard their conversation. I stepped back and allowed the pack doctor to pass by.

I looked up at Mason to see him staring intensely at me. I stepped closer to him.

"Did you hear?" He questioned. I nodded my head.

"Yes I did, I didn't mean to, but I heard everything. I was coming over to check up on you." I answered him. His hard stare relaxed a little at what I said, and he let out a huge sigh. He turned around and walked into the office and I followed him in, then closed the door.

"What are you going to do?" I asked. He sat on his couch and ran a hand through his hair, looking frustrated. I sat across him and he shook his head.

"I don't know," he muttered.

"What if that rogue had nothing to do with the attacks? What if it was just a coincidence?" I questioned. He snapped his head over to me and his eyes hardened.

"Whether you're right or wrong, I still need to take action, for the safety of my pack, just in case if there's a threat." He told me. I slowly nodded my head, understanding where he's coming from. He wants to make sure his pack is safe from whatever threat. These past two months we've been encountering rogue attacks and we don't know if we're safe or not, even though this is one of the strongest packs there is.

"What are you planning?" I asked. He sighed and grabbed his phone from his desk.

"I need to make a phone call with an Alpha. We're going to arrange a meeting tomorrow. Hopefully, we can find a solution," he grumbled. I nodded my head and stood up, walking towards him then sat next to him on the couch. He stared down at me and that's when I noticed the bags under his eyes.

He looked very tired and sleepy. All energy drained from him and I felt bad for him. I placed my hand on his shoulder, feeling the sparks erupt from the contact.

"You look tired. Have you been sleeping well?" I asked. He shook his head.

"I'm perfectly fine, Tiana." He whispered. I shook my head, not believing his words.

"No, you're not. It's written all over your face, you're exhausted." I told him. "When was the last time you slept?"

Mason looked down at his hands then back at me. He shrugged his shoulders which made a frown crawl onto my face.

"I don't know, it doesn't really matter." He muttered. I raised a brow at him and shook my head.

"It does matter. Did you forget that you're the Alpha?" I questioned.

"And since I'm the Alpha that means I have many things to do and don't have time for sleep." He told me. I shook my head, disagreeing with him.

"Wrong," I said. "Since you're the Alpha, that makes you responsible over your pack, meaning, you can't lead a pack while you're very tired."

He looked down at me, amusement written on his face.

"Still, I don't have time to sleep." He argued and started dialing a number on his phone. "I have an important phone call to make." I rolled my eyes and snatched the phone from his hands. He looked over at me and gave me a pointed look.

"Tiana," he said carefully. "I'm not in the mood to deal with your stubbornness. Hand me the phone."

I shook my head and gave him a small smile.

"No can do, Alpha. Right now, you're going to rest. And you'll make this important phone call in the morning." I ordered, causing a long, tired sigh to escape his mouth.

"Tiana." He groaned.

"Oh, stop whining." I shook my head then grabbed his neck, pulling him down to me. He shot me a confused look and I gave him a soft smiling.

"What are you doing?" He asked. I placed his head on my lap and started playing with his hair.

"I'm putting you to sleep since you know, you're not listening to me," I answered. A soft, playful growl came out of his chest.

"I'm not a child. I can sleep if I want to, and I don't need to be put to sleep," Mason argued. I rolled my eyes and tugged harder on his hair, making a growl escape his lips.

"What was that for?" He asked, rubbing his head softly. I smacked his hand and he placed his hand back to his side, I then started rubbing on the spot I tugged on.

"For arguing with me. Just listen to me for once and sleep." I said stubbornly. He let out a sigh and started to get comfortable on the couch. I started running my hand through his hair and he let out a satisfied growl. I stopped for a second but that lead him to grab my hand and place it back on his head.

"Don't stop." He murmured, sounding tired. A smile crawled onto my lips and I continued playing with his hair as his head laid on my lap. After awhile his breath evened out and his chest rose and fell. I then knew that he fell asleep, and he fell asleep on my lap. I couldn't help the goofy smile that appeared on my face.

This felt nice, and I couldn't deny that.

I slowly closed my eyes and placed my head against the wall, falling into a deep, deep sleep inside Mason's office.

A satisfied sigh came out of my lips as I snuggled deeper into the warmth that surrounded me. I relaxed as I felt strong arms around my body, carrying me close to their body. I felt the person carrying me walk around, open a door, and enter a room that had Mason's scent all around.

Mason, he was the one carrying me. His scent engulfed my senses and I felt sparks erupt at the touch of our bodies. A little yawn escaped my lips and I felt slowly being placed on a soft, comfortable bed that was filled with Mason's scent.

I stirred a bit, slowly waking up but too tired to open my eyes.

I felt Mason brush a strand of hair out of my face and softly brush his finger along my cheek. I slowly opened my eyes to meet his beautiful orbs. I slowly looked around to see it was dark, I started wondering how long we slept.

"Shh," he whispered. "Go back to sleep. It's late."

I looked back at him to see him staring intensely at me. I smiled at him.

"Did you at least sleep well?" I asked. He gave me a small smile, then grabbed a piece of my hair.

"I did, but now it's your turn to sleep. You were in an uncomfortable position, you could have got a sore neck." He said. "Go to sleep."

"You too," I said and grabbed his hand, pulling him towards me. "Sleep."

He let out a deep chuckle and moved closer to me.

"If I sleep, will you sleep?" He questioned. I smiled and nodded my head.

"Yes," I replied.

He laid down on the bed right next to me, facing me and staring into my eyes. We stared at each other for a moment then Mason raised his hand and pushed a strand of hair behind my ear.

"Goodnight, Tiana."

A yawn escaped my lips and I slowly felt myself falling back to sleep.

I felt safe and warm, being here with Mason made me feel different and weird, but I liked it. I liked it when I could see Mason's different side, and it made me happy knowing that he'd let me see that side. My eyes started feeling heavy and started closing on their own behalf.

I looked at Mason one more time before closing my eyes. I thought about him and I. I was confused but tried to not think much of it. I was curious. What were we? Friends? Strangers? Alpha and pack member or mates? We never really talked about this subject, knowing that it wasn't completely what we wanted...but was it? Is this what we truly wanted?

"Mason?" I whispered softly.

"Hmm?" He continued to play with the strand of hair.

"What are we?" I asked.

"What do you mean?" He asked.

"What am I to you?" I questioned. I felt him go stiff but slowly relax after a moment. I was too tired to care and to realize what I had just asked him.

"Tiana," he whispered. "Go back to sleep."

I yawned again and got comfortable, welcoming the darkness with open arms. I was too sleepy to ask him again and wait for an answer. I don't know why I asked him that but I did, and it didn't look like he wanted to answer me but I was too exhausted to think too much of it.

Before I completely fell asleep I could've sworn I heard him say something, but my brain wasn't functioning properly for me to hear or to know. But he said something that I knew in the morning I would forget and not pay much attention to it.

He said something that sounded like, "you're important."
