CHAPTER 24…
MATTHEWS POV
“So why is it good that Niall Horan is here?” She asked.
“Because he is my next target to kill. Anyways, would you like to get something to eat?”
“WHAT?” She yelled.
“Listen I know it’s a weird time of day to eat, but I mean brunch?” I said.
“I wasn’t talking about that!” She yelled.
“Oh, ok good. So I know this great diner a few blocks away. Amazing pancakes.”
“Why?” She asked. “What did he do?”
“Uhhm I assume they’re good pancakes because they have a thick batter. It also tends to help if you slow cook them.”
“Matthew!” She grabbed my arm and said “You know what I am talking about.”
I laughed and then said “Listen Angie, it’s complicated.”
“I want to know why you are trying to kill my boyfriend!” She screeched.
“Wait what? He’s your boyfriend?” I asked.
“Yes.” She said.
Well geez. This changes everything about me wanting to kill him. He makes my sister happy, I can’t ruin that. “I’ll put the case on hold.” I said.
“Promise me, that while we’re in town, you won’t try to kill him.”
I could get fired! Ahh why not. “Fine.” I said. “But I could get fired.”
“There’s the brother I know!” She smiled and hugged me.
“So brunch?” I asked.
She laughed and then said “Of course, but Niall is coming.”
“Where is the pretty boy?” I asked.
“He’s right here!” The fat man called as he pushed Niall out of the door.
“Angie!” Niall yelled.
She ran to him, and they hugged. I just stood there awkwardly and said “Sooo sis, haven’t seen you in 6 years…”
“Right, sorry.” She said.
So then we walked to the great diner that I had talked about and sat down in a booth. I wasn’t really in the mood for answering questions about why I left, so I decided to ask her questions. “So are you still competing?” I asked referring to her gymnastics.
“Uhh no.” She said quietly.
“Why not?” I asked.
“I don’t really want to talk about.” She said glumly.
“Angie, I am your brother, tell me what happened?”

“What’s he talking about?” Asked the blondie.
“Her gymnastics! She was so great when were 13.” I stated.
“Angie! You do gymnastics? How come I never knew about this?” Niall asked her.
“Because it’s not a happy part of my life. Ok?” She fired at him.
“Woah Angie, what happened?” I asked her.
“I got injured.” She said.
“Really, when?” I asked.
“August 12 2008.” She stated firmly.
“Wait, weren’t you and Harry dating back then?” Niall asked.
“No, it was before I met him. Exactly 6 months before we met.” She stated.
“How did you get injured?” I asked.
“Balance beam in a meet.” She said picking at her pancakes. “6 month recovery.”
“That’s weird, you had a meet the same day as the Olympics.” Niall said.
“Yeah. I did.” She said.
“Wait a second, were you in the Olympics?” I asked.
“Uhh yes.” She said not making eye contact with either of us.
“Why didn’t you tell me that? That’s amazing Angie!” Niall yelled.
“No Niall it wasn’t!” She yelled.
“What happened?” I proceeded to ask.
“I had just won a gold medal, and I was show boating while doing my dismount off of the beam.”
“Yes and…?” I prompted her.
“I had a really band landing a twisted and pulled a bunch of stuff. But I still won gold. Anyways, I was planning on going back to gymnastics when I recovered, but the day I started to walk again, I went into a bakery to buy some cupcakes, and I met Harry. He and I started dating, and I didn’t really have the time to go to the gym.”
“You gave up your dreams for him, and then when the opportunity came for him, he left you.” Niall said.
“Thanks captain obvious, like I didn’t already know that!” She said through tears.
“Does he even know?” Niall asked.
“Of course not, I decided not to tell him.” She said.
“Why?” I butted in.
“Because then he would feel guilty for the rest of his life, and I didn’t want that.” She stammered.
“Well he deserves to!” I said. “I could just kill the guy!”

I could see a smile creeping across Angie’s face, and then she started laughing. “We wouldn’t want to kill anyone.” She said.
“Right, I would never ever kill a man.” I said laughing.
She and I held our sides laughing so hard while Niall was just staring at us. “I don’t get it.” He said.
“Don’t worry about it.” I said.
“So Matthew, why did you leave?” She had finally asked me the question I had been dreading.
“I just didn’t want to live there anymore.” I said. This was the truth, but I knew she would lots of follow up questions.
“I don’t understand, you and I were best friends. We did everything together, and had so much fun doing it.” She said back.
“I was jealous of your new boyfriend that you were spending so much time with.” I said.
“You mean Jake? Matt I broke up with him, the night before we saw you were gone.”
“Wait what? Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked shocked.
“I don’t know, I was upset and didn’t feel like talking about.”
“Oh wow, that would have changed everything.” I said.
“Anyways, where did you go?” She asked.
“Well, I didn’t have a lot of money so when a man offered to take me in, and give me a job, I had to take it.”
“Who was the man? Do you still have contact with him?” She asked.
“Well, he was the man that picked you up at the airport.” I said sipping my coffee.
“He runs your company?” She asked.
“Yeah, I started working right away, and he still hasn’t fired me.” I said proudly.
“What exactly do you do again?” Niall asked me.
“I make computers.” I lied to him.
“So Matt, when did you make your first computer?” Angie asked me.
“The day I left.” I said looking down. I knew what she meant by “make a computer”. I wasn’t proud to say I killed a man when I was 13, but you have to pay the bills somehow.
“You said you haven’t been fired, you must be good at making computers!” Niall said.
“Yeah, I do it pretty quickly too.” I said laughing.
“Have you ever wanted to do anything else then make computers?” Angie asked.
“Of course, I would kill to have another job.” I laughed to myself at my play on words.
“Why don’t you quit then?” Niall asked.
“Because I know too much about how to make computers and therefore, I am not allowed to leave the company because my boss fears I will share what I know about making computers.” I explained.
“What if you promise not to tell?” Angie asked.
“He would never believe me.” I said.
“Then why don’t you make a computer out of him?” She asked.
“Angie that’s impossible to make a computer with a person!” Niall said laughing.
“Especially not with him, it’s too dangerous.” I said hoping she would understand.
“But you’ve done it so many times before.” She tried.
“I can’t.” I said softly.
“Well something has to be done about this. You can’t go on making computers, and someone has to stop your boss from making computers” She yelled.
“You’re right, but it does pay very well.” I said.
“Can you ask your boss if you and he can take a break so you can spend time with me?” She asked.
“I already did, and he said that our business will go on break for 2 weeks.” I responded.
“Why can’t he make computers without you?” Niall asked.
“Because I have half of the mind to be able to make a computer, he can’t do it without me. Sure he could learn to do it alone if he ever had to, or find someone else to do it with him, but he wanted a break too.” I said.
“I have a plan.” Angie said.
“Does it involve putting an end to making computers?” I asked hopefully.
“Yes, but you need to come back with Niall and I to Ireland to put this into action.” She said.
“Ok, let’s go to my apartment and get my things and then stop at your hotel, get your things, and leave the country.” I said winking at Angie.
“Alright let’s do it!” She said.
“I don’t get what’s so bad about making a computer.” Niall said.
“We’ll explain it on the plane Blondie.” I said.

The Queen's Guard
Friedrich Schreiner is a proud gefreiter of the Queen's Guard, 2nd Company: the finest fighting infantry on the continent (barring the Temple Guard; but please don't bring that up). Service is honourable but, with the Empire on a peacetime footing, terribly boring. Affairs take a dramatic turn for the worse when a mysterious invader uses a forgotten and taboo magical means to breach the capital, plunging the nation into chaos and endangering the royal family. With events spiraling out of control, Friedrich is entrusted with a critical mission. Will hot lead, cold steel, and his determination be enough to see him through? The Queen's Guard is what I'm calling a black powder fantasy story: it's set in a loose equivalent of the early 18th century (plus or minus a few pieces I decided I wanted or didn't want). Magic exists, but not in a spell-slinging sort of way: it's Earth-shaking undertakings or minor enchantments forged in by master craftsmen, the grand working of a secretive cabal or a slight nudge to the course of a blow. I, the eternal optimist, have a full trilogy in mind. The first book is The Prince's Arquebusier, hence the cover and the title disagreeing! This is my shot at 2021's NaNoWriMo and RR Writathon! I've hitherto been terrible at writing long-form fiction, so this is an effort to break out of that by having some accountability in being supposed to post chapters regularly. Here's hoping it works! I have an outline, but not too much detail. I'll do my best to avoid continuity errors, doing anything glaringly stupid, or otherwise fluffing my lines, but I can't make any promises on that. Please do let me know any feedback! Always happy to improve. [participant in the Nov 2021 Royal Road Writathon challenge]
