《Breathing ∞ Kol Mikaelson [1]》[77]

Emma and Kol had spent the majority of their day out in the streets of Rio, exploring the parts of the city known for housing witches and supernatural creatures of all kinds. Even though neither could be entirely forthcoming about their identities, considering the dislike witches held towards both siphoners and vampires, Kol's ability to distinguish fact from tourist-attractive fiction still made it quite an illuminating trip.
The only down side of it was the feeling of her legs aching as Emma and Kol walked back into the house. She was more than ready to crash on the couch and do nothing more for the rest of the day. And once she was in the living room, that was exactly what she proceeded to do while Kol called out into the house, checking to see if his brother and Katherine were home.
Once the lack of a response made the answer clear, Kol turned back to Emma, smiling as he sat on the edge of the couch on which she was lying. "Feeling alright, darling?" He questioned, his hand gently rubbing her thigh as she smiled up at him.
"Perfectly fine, just as exhausted." Emma reassured him. "Keeping up with you can do that to a person, you know?" She added teasingly, fingers intertwining with his.
"Too exhausted to enjoy having the house all to ourselves?" Kol questioned with a raised eyebrow, making Emma laugh before she rose into a sitting position, face coming quite close to his as she was ready to make it clear she was never too exhausted for that. But before she could, her words were cut off by the sound of her stomach rumbling, reminding them both of the announcement she made on their way back to the house about how hungry she was. "Ah, yes. I did make a promise to cook you dinner, didn't I? I'll get right on it." Kol quickly shifted directions, placing a soft kiss to Emma's lips for only a second before he was back on his feet.
Watching him go into the kitchen, Emma shook her head in amusement. Their time together in the Bahamas had shown another way in which they were a perfect fit, according to Emma's opinion. While had the cooking skills to burn water when trying to boil it, Kol's curiosities about the developments in cuisine during his absence for the last century revealed the skills he had in the kitchen. And since, loved using to spoil her.
While watching him get to work, the sound of her phone buzzing had Emma looking away as she dragged the device out of her pocket. She wasn't sure who could be calling her, knowing there weren't many options. One was Matt, to either give her another update on all the chaos happening in Mystic Falls or simply to rant out his frustrations about it all. The other was Katherine, calling to wrangle Emma into another 'girl's day' she'd been suggesting.

However, it was neither of those. Or any other option which wouldn't have been too surprising in Emma's opinion. No, the name printed out on the screen of her phone had her restraining herself from letting the surprise she felt on the inside show on her face.
"I have to take this." Emma announced, getting up from the sofa and heading in the direction of their bedroom for some sense of privacy. Kol nodded his head in acceptance, not pressing her for any further information even if it was odd for her to take the call away from him considering she hadn't been doing that during any others. He'd simply ask her about it later, knowing she'd tell him once it was over at least.
And it was true, Emma had no intentions of hiding who was calling her for too long. However, she still wanted a chance to answer the call before Kol tried to talk her out of it or become upset over whatever was said on the other end of the line.
And so, when she entered the bedroom, siphoning the magic Kol had helped her store away in some of the decorative trinkets around the house, Emma muttered a short spell; a tweaked version of Esther's silencing spell that didn't involve the burning of sage, but as a result also lasted a shorter amount of time.
"Hello?" A part of Emma hated the unsure and hesitant tone that painted her voice as she finally answered the call, but it was too late to take it back now.
"It's good to hear your voice, love." The familiar accent reached her ears, his voice chipper and overly happy. Emma, of course, knew better than to let the tone fool her.
"Uh... Yours too, Klaus." The confused state of her thoughts seeped through and made the statement come across as more of a question. One that she didn't get an answer to. Instead, a silence spread over them, neither saying anything for a couple of long and awkward moments.
Emma wasn't sure what to say, and since he'd been the one to call in the first place, she expected there to be a point to it. But the longer the quiet stretched on, the more she was losing her patience with this new game. "Klaus, why exactly are you calling me?" She finally questioned.
"Is it so wrong for a friend to want to check in with another friend?" Klaus' question had Emma raising an inquisitive eyebrow, momentarily forgetting that he couldn't actually see the suspicion on her face and she had to voice it instead.
"It's not, but... I didn't realize we were still friends?" She pointed out, her mind trying to decipher any signs in Klaus' voice that might give away his hidden motives or the aim of the game he was playing.

"Ah, yes. Your deception did present somewhat of a strain."
"As did your decision to kill me for it." Her response was instantaneous.
"We all say things we don't mean in moments of anger." Klaus replied in a dismissive tone, light and uncaring as if it was all a thing of the past. For a moment, Emma felt some hope sparking within her at the thought of her friendship with Klaus returning back to normal.
But she ignored it, knowing it was easy to let herself believe such things over the phone, from the safe distance between Brazil and Mystic Falls which kept them apart. "And you no longer mean it?" She questioned, still hesitant and not wanting to fall for some kind of deception she knew him more than capable of.
For a moment, all she heard on the other end of the line was a heavy sigh, unsure of what it meant or what Klaus was thinking without the ability to see him. "No." Klaus finally answered, and sounded genuine in doing so. The single-word response along with his tone made Emma more inclined to believe him.
They both knew he wasn't one for long winded emotional spiels or apologies where he has to admit he'd done or said something wrong. If that had been his response, Emma would have certainly believed it to be a trick. For a moment, she couldn't help but shake her head at the unusual-ness of it all. Dealing with Klaus was something else.
"You'll forgive me if I don't come rushing back to Mystic Falls to hug you in gratitude, won't you?" She questioned, her voice taking on a joking tone. Emma knew that she never fully trusted Klaus, and the same could be said for him in regards to her, but the idea of slowly rebuilding the trust that had been there, it made her hope that Klaus was being genuine.
"I doubt my little brother would let you even if you wanted to." Klaus chuckled knowingly on the other end of the line, and Emma couldn't help but nod her head with a small smile. She knew that even though the conversation had turned out better than she expected when first seeing Klaus' name on her screen, Kol would be much more hesitant to believe in Klaus' offer of peace than she would. And for good reason.
"Worry not, Mystic Falls doesn't require your presence. I have everything handled here all by myself." Klaus announced after another moment passed, his words making Emma think of other things. For a moment, she decided to use this re-established friendship to get some more answers that had been on her mind.
"Including the legal stuff and paperwork after... the fire?" She asked openly. She knew when she left Mystic Falls she'd be leaving behind a load of issues in regards to insurance and wills and other things, but someone had been taking care of it in her place. Someone that wasn't Rebekah.
"Including that." Klaus admitted, and a small smile made its way on to Emma's face. Perhaps Elijah had been more right about Klaus' ability to come around than she initially believed. "According to the very cooperative and forthcoming workers-"
"In other words, compelled workers." Emma couldn't help but interrupt him, her tone mixed in with a small laugh because she knew what he was implying with the happy choice of words.
"The money from the insurance company should be settling into your account any week now." Klaus continued once his laughter subsided.
"Thank you, Klaus."
It is the least I could do." Emma knew that those seven words were as close as she was going to get to any semblance of an apology. And she'd take them. After all, she'd never been the kind of person who needed to hear the actual words 'I'm sorry' to be able to forgive someone. All she needed were actions that showed it. And that is what Klaus was giving her right now.
"Emma..." The sound of his voice as he said her name, not a nickname or a teasing title, and the tone of it made her brows furrow. They were clear signs that there was something else he wanted to say, something weighing on him. "I'm glad you're alright."
And while the words made a smile appear on her face again, Emma could also sense there to be more behind Klaus' words. "What's wrong, Nik?" She asked, her voice gentle and even a bit concerned, thinking he may have been lying when he said he had everything perfectly handled back in Mystic Falls.
But, of course, as soon as he realized he'd shown the smallest sign of vulnerability, Klaus was back to his old self. "Don't worry about it, love. I have some business to tend to with my hybrids, but I do hope to hear from you again soon." He said dismissively, making Emma sigh, but she didn't press him any further.
"You can call too, any time." She did, however, make it clear, that whatever was going on, she was right there. One phone call away. The first step to rebuilding what once was.
