《Breathing ∞ Kol Mikaelson [1]》[66]

Emma groaned out, earning herself weird looks from all those around her. "No, I'm serious. Please tell me you're kidding? Because I've had enough murderous assholes in the last twenty four hours. And I'm also not too happy to find out you're still alive."
She knew that she should probably be more like April, more scared, but at this particular moment, Emma couldn't really bring herself to that point. She just wanted to get out of there and not waste her precious time on this damn fool. She had places to be and things to do.
"Sit down!" Connor growled out at them, pushing Jeremy into one of the chairs which Matt had set up before Emma's arrival.
April was the first to comply, her face full of fear and confusion as she took a seat at the table with Jeremy who didn't really bother getting up. Matt came next, more hesitant and keeping his wary eyes glued to the hunter. With the three humans sitting at the table, Connor's threatening glare focused on Emma.
"Ugh, fine. Make it quick, please." She groaned out, pulling out the chair next to Jeremy and slumping down in it. At least she had her coffee to occupy her time. And, if she were being honest, mind running along the layout of the Grill, already trying to figure out a way to get out, wasn't too bad of a distraction.
"How are you so calm?" Matt questioned her quietly while Connor started moving around the place, lowering blinds and covering up and views out the windows or doors.
"Because, we're hostages. Not targets." Emma said clearly. Connor was a vampire hunter. She could see the plan even when it hasn't actually been revealed yet. They were here, well, Matt and Jeremy were here to lure the town's vampires into a daring rescue mission which would end up with them dead.
"Give me your phones." Connor came back to them rather quickly, waving his knife around in a threatening manner. Once again, April's fear made her the easiest to control. But Matt and Jeremy weren't far behind her, knowing resistance was the stupider course. "Phone, now." Connor instructed, hand turning to Emma expectantly.
"Yeah, sure. Just let me jump home and grab the molten plastic real quick." Emma quipped back with a roll of her eyes. "I don't have it dude, you can check." She announced, turning out the pockets of her jacket for emphasis. Although, mentioning it was molten seemed to do enough of a trick.
"At least let April go. She doesn't have anything to do with this." Jeremy tried to persuade the hunter. They all knew while Matt and Jeremy were bait for the Salvatores and Tyler, Emma not so much, but they couldn't claim the same for her as they did April.
"She has everything to do with this." Connor said ominously. "Her and her father. Plus, she and I have history." He continued on, making April grow more and more confused. The poor girl was out of her mind with fear, unable to understand that this wasn't as simple as a random guy gone mad.
"What are you talking about? I've never seen you before in my life." She tried to question him, but instead of giving her answers, Connor just ensured she had even more questions.
"Well, you kids need to get some vervain. And don't just wear it as a bracelet where anybody can just take it off." Connor started to say, and Emma decided she'd antagonised him enough for a little while so she didn't point out that the council blew itself up with it. And it seemed distasteful too, in April's presence. "Maybe then you'd remember our conversation at the hybrid's yesterday." The hunter added on, pointing to the bracelet tied around Jeremy's wrist and making the boy's brows furrow.

"Our conversation? Are you saying someone compelled me?!" Jeremy questioned in a demanding tone, eyes glancing between both the hunter but also Emma. The girl could only shrug her shoulders, she actually didn't know what the hell Connor was talking about. "Do you know anything about this?" He still felt the need to ask her specifically.
"Sorry, I didn't see Klaus all day yesterday." Emma said honestly. Well, she did see him, but in that situation she didn't really get a chance to chit chat and catch up. "And we're kinda on the outs right now, so I can't find out for you either." She added on.
"Would someone please tell me what he's talking about?!" April was entirely lost, unable to comprehend anything any of them were saying. She was also confused by how in stride the three people with her were taking this. Like it was the most normal thing.
"Compulsion, secrets, vampires." Connor announced. Of course, it only made April look at him like she was realizing just how insanely crazy he was.
"Break it to her gently, why don't you?" Emma rolled her eyes. Either Matt and Jeremy would have quite a lot of explaining to do once they got out of there, or April would be compelled just like any other human. She suspected it to be the latter option.
"If you know so much, then you know our friends are going to come for us." Matt tried to point out, and it only had Emma rolling her eyes at him this time. Wasn't that exactly what she said minutes ago?
"Oh, yeah, I'm counting on it. Every vampire that comes for you is another one I get to kill." Connor pointed out, and Emma made a small bell ringing motion with her hand in the air. A silent way of saying 'Bingo!' to herself. "Now, who should I text first? Hm?" The hunter asked as he started to look through Jeremy's phone. "Damon Salvatore, his brother Stefan, Tyler Lockwood? Nah, all of the above."
"Nice little list you've compiled yourself. Sad you've been in town for weeks now and haven't made even a dent in it." Emma sent the man a fake smile, somewhat enjoying the angry look on his face.
"Just because you're bait, doesn't mean I won't hesitate to kill you." Connor threatened, and to drive his point further, shattered Jeremy's phone by stabbing it with his hunting knife. Well, at least he was dramatic enough to fit into Mystic Falls.
Once he made his threats clear, Connor moved on again, knowing his last words would be enough to control the humans while he worked on the next part of his plan. Matt was trying his best to calm down April. Emma on the other hand wasn't really eager to put her life in the hands of the Salvatores and their buddies. Half the time their plans went to shit. So she ignored the conversation going on around her, even as Jeremy got up and went to talk to Connor.
Instead, she fished into her pocket, digging out the black stone and staring down at it for a moment. Fire... blood... pain... Nope, not now. She had to think of ways to get out, not the last time she used the stone. But remembering that, reminded her that the stone was now completely useless. "Damn it." She muttered to herself. Of course she hadn't charged it back up for a trip to the Grill.
"What is that?" Matt caught sight of it just as Emma stuffed it back into her pocket, her eyes turning to the clock instead. She'd made a deal with Kol to meet a couple of blocks away in less than an hour. He was happy to make arrangements for them and organise things while she went around town to say goodbye and buy stuff she needed, but he wasn't about to let her go to her house alone.

"A magical stone that is depleted of its magic and therefore completely useless." Emma said in a disgruntled tone. She ignored the wide eyed look she got from April. She really didn't care about protecting the girl from the big scary secrets of Mystic Falls right now.
"Magical stone?" The dark haired girl's voice trembled and she even went as far as scooting back in her chair to be further away from Emma, thinking her just as crazy as their captor.
"So if the stone doesn't work, what will?" Emma was pretty much speaking her thoughts out loud now, starting to make even Matt look at her with a weird look. Although, it wasn't for the same reasons as April. She had no reason to hide anymore. Klaus, the main reason she did, knew, and she was also leaving town. It didn't matter.
Her eyes scanned around the Grill, but she doubted she'd find anything magical she could use. Until her eyes landed on Jeremy and the hunter. She remembered something Caroline had told her. A tattoo... One that she couldn't see.
"Magical invisible tattoo." She muttered to herself, the look on her face basically making Matt and April fully able to imagine a lightbulb turning on above her head.
She wasn't sure why she couldn't see the tattoo, but if it was there, that had to mean it was hidden by something magical. Most likely a spell. She couldn't know for sure until she touched the man's skin. She just needed to find a way. One that wouldn't get her killed if there was no magic or spell and Caroline was wrong about the tattoo.
"Emma, what are you thinking? And why are you talking about magic?" Matt questioned her, thinking she was about to do something crazy that would get her or someone else hurt. He at least wanted to be clued in on the plan.
"Okay, Matty, truth time. I was hoping not to have to do this, but I'm sad to say our human alliance is null and void." She announced, watching the confused look he gave her. "I mean, one of the requirements is being human. Which I am not. So, I'm gonna kindly ask you to play along."
The firm look on her face, along with the revelation had Matt freezing. His first thought was vampire. Thinking she'd turned at some point without him knowing. But he was too scared to ask. And if his suspicions were true that meant Emma really needed to get out of here before Connor realized.
"On my signal, run for the back. He's already rigged the front door, we don't wanna mess with that." She announced. She knew Connor had probably done it to the back door already too, while they sat at the bar unaware of his presence. But she could tinker with whatever booby trap may be there when they got to it. She'd lock him out of the back room and then figure out a way to get out.
She didn't give him time to question it. Instead, she forced out a cough. After having vampire blood two days in a row, Emma's lungs felt better than they had in a while, but Connor didn't know that. And so she started to cough, loudly too.
Bending over, she let her hair obscure her face. She remembered one time when she was younger, wanting to get out of a test and pretending to feel sick. She coughed and acted, giving what she thought was a performance of a lifetime only for her mother to tell her that her face gave her away. Apparently it made it obvious when she was forcing a cough versus when it was real.
"What's wrong with her?" Connor questioned impatiently, both he and Jeremy abandoning their conversation to come closer. But not close enough, not yet.
"She's sick. She needs her inhaler." Luckily Matt was doing just as she'd told him. Playing along. And the word sick always made people lower their defences. The word sick made her seem weak and unthreatening. And that is just what she needed the hunter to think as she pretended like she was struggling to get to her feet.
"Please, I..." Another forced cough. "I need to get out." She wheezed out, coughing again as she drew closer to him before forcing her feet to stumble. It was enough to reach him fast without seeming like she was rushing at him. It was enough to make her taking hold of his bare forearm to seem like she was simply keeping herself from falling over. And by then it was too late for him anyways.
"I-" Whatever he started to say, he was cut off. With Emma's newly established hold on him, it didn't take her too long to search. The magic wasn't as strong as it was with vampires, and harder to reach, but once she did, once she felt it, she pulled on it without hesitation.
The red glow appeared, and Connor groaned out in pain. Emma couldn't help the victorious smirk that came over her face, her hold on him tightening. She felt the magic fuel her, but before she could take much more, Connor got past his shock and started to resist. He swung at her with his other arm, forcing Emma to let go to evade the hit.
"What the hell was that?" Jeremy questioned with wide eyes, frozen in his spot and unsure of what to do. Emma didn't respond, not as Connor recovered and charged at her. Of course, the idiot thought his human speed would be enough.
"Motus." She called out, but instead of pointing her palm straight at him, she made one of the tables smash into his side, sending him to the ground. She was happy about that fact she wasn't surrounded by idiots once she turned around to use the chance to run, seeing that Matt and April were already heading past the door. "Come on!" She called out to Jeremy.
While she ran ahead, it took the Gilbert a moment too long to gather his bearings, and by the time he was about to rush through the back door after her, Emma ready to spell it shut after him, Connor grabbed hold of Jeremy and forced him back.
"Just go!" Jeremy called out before she could try reaching back for him, making her look back to share a worried look with Matt.
"Can you fight him?" Matt questioned, making Emma focus for a moment, testing how much magic she had left. She wouldn't make the mistake of walking back in there if she didn't think she had enough of it to beat him. And she didn't. She could only shake her head in response to Matt's question.
"Whatever magic he has in him, it's different. It runs out faster. I'm guessing it's because it isn't keeping him alive, like the one in vampires." Emma tried to explain as best as she could. She made a mental note to try and find different things to siphon once she was out of here and out of Mystic Falls. Different kinds of magic worked differently, she needed to figure out ways to use them. Not just rely on what she was used to getting from vampires.
"What the hell did you just do?" April spoke for the first time, reminding Matt and Emma of her presence and making them exchange hesitant looks between themselves.
"Okay, April, I know this is all weird and confusing, but I'm gonna need you to keep your chill for just a little bit longer." Emma tried to sound as empathetic as she could, holding back her annoyance. She really wasn't in the mood to hold a supernatural 101 class.
"You... You just made a table fly?!"
Emma could only groan. It seemed like the girl wasn't going to keep her chill despite Emma's request. Nothing she could do about it now. Matt seemed to come to the same conclusion, turning to Emma as he spoke up, rushing to one corner of the room where a metal plate covered a spot in the wall.
"There used to be an exit to the old wine cellar." He announced. It was a way to get out, and if they could get out then anyone coming in to save Jeremy would be able to come in with an element of surprise. But, of course, his idea was quickly shot down. "They bricked it over." He gave a defeated sigh.
"Who bricks over a secret escape path in this town?" Emma wondered out loud with a shake of her head, moving back to the door so she could look out the small window.
Connor had made no moves to follow after them, instead he was talking to Jeremy again, obviously confident that one hostage was enough. And if the wires she could see sticking out from underneath the mat under the back door, that they'd blow themselves up in an attempt to get out.
She was about to start thinking, debating whether she should find another way out or just made the bricks explode with magic. But before she could come to a firm decision, she noticed the door of the bar start to open, Connor and Jeremy both ducking out of sight as the music started to echo through the air.
Emma recognized the hybrid through the dark, but she knew it was no point getting her hopes up when she saw him. Not once she saw him step inside without even checking where he was going. Which ended up with him getting blown up.
"Seriously Klaus? A hybrid is more useful alive, to both of us." She groaned out, ignoring the shocked reactions of Matt and April. What'd they expect would happen? They all saw Connor setting up his traps.
Feeling a hand on her shoulder, and knowing both Matt and April were beside her and not the ones doing it, Emma spun around, grabbing hold of the hand and instantly siphoning. At least until she realized who it was.
"Sorry." She whispered out to Stefan who's face was starting to relax in the absence of pain. "Well, not really. Who sneaks up on a person in a hostage situation?"
For a moment he stared at her with a confused look on his face, but the pointed motion of her hand for him to talk made Stefan realize he could ask later. Instead, he pulled out a map and shoved it in Matt's hands.
"Follow this map, get out of here," Stefan instructed simply, obviously ready to take over the Jeremy situation. Emma didn't have to be told twice. She was probably already late anyways. "Take her to Caroline so she can..." Stefan looked to April as he added, letting the ending hang in the air.
"Ok." Matt seemed to agree rather quickly too. After all, he knew he wasn't really a match for the hunter out there. But he still needed to point it out to Stefan too. Just in case. "Stefan, that guy is armed. If you go out there, he's gonna kill Jeremy."
"No one's killing anyone." Stefan said confidently before motioning for them to go again. And this time they did.
Matt grabbed hold of April, leading her into the tunnels from which Stefan came and Emma followed after them. Another, albeit unplanned, distraction was out of the way.
Fire. Blood. Pain.
