《Breathing ∞ Kol Mikaelson [1]》[63]

Kol was simply going through the motions. One moment he was pacing from one end of the room to the other, in the next he was sitting on a chair beside the bed, and then he'd become restless again as he waited. But no matter how anxious he got, how much he wanted to go out there and hunt someone down or tear into someone's throat, he refused to leave the room.

Even as he heard the sound of footsteps approaching the house, two people coming onto the porch, and only one making their way inside. With his hearing already focused long before their arrival, it wasn't hard for Kol to overhear the conversation happening at the front door of the house.

"Rebekah, I suggest you get whatever compelled human you're hiding in there and let me inside." Klaus' voice was highly annoyed and Kol could just imagine the glare he was giving their sister after running into the invisible barrier as he tried to enter the house.

"Sorry, Nik, no compelled humans. I put the house in Emma's name, so until she wakes up, you're stuck out there." Rebekah announced, obviously thinking it for the best before she continued to add. "And then she'll decide if she wants to let you in."

"Then at least get our brother down here." Klaus demanded. "He's got some explaining to do." And Kol, of course, knew what Klaus was referring to, the memory still running on a loop through his mind.

Once Kol and his brother arrived at the warehouses, they started searching every possible hiding place, every nook and cranny. But it quickly became apparent that there was no one there anymore. After centuries of their own tricks to cause murder, mayhem and revenge, it wasn't long before both realized what was going on.

They'd been tricked.

Even on any normal day, Emma was most often in the presence of at least one Mikaelson, and no one could be sure when one would come by. The warehouses were a distraction. Blinding him in his need to get this done as quickly as possible that he didn't hesitate, he didn't doubt or debate. He simply left, taking his brother with him and leaving Emma alone.

"We have to get back." It was Klaus who spoke, breaking Kol out of the flurry of his mind as they stood among abandoned containers and crates. Klaus' own face was one of shock as the same thoughts dawned on him.

There were no more words spoken, the brothers moving in unison as they started to run back to the Park house. Their speed cut the time drastically, but Kol hadn't even reached the house before he knew. He could see the flames in the distance, the sound of sirens echoing from the streets even further.

It made Kol push faster, chasing ahead of his brother and arriving to the house only a few seconds sooner. For just a moment, he froze, watching as the flames rose into the air, the windows broken as flames licked the outside of the house. He didn't wait too long, however. He didn't care for the fire which couldn't hurt him permanently, he didn't care about the state inside, he simply rushed to the door, ignoring the call of his brother as he watched him rush into the flames.

Kol called her name, screaming it into the flames as he rushed through the hall, ignoring the sparks which caught on to his clothes. He listened for any sign of life, but heard nothing. And then he came into the kitchen, tapping away the flames burning the clothes on his arm.

He noticed the smell of burning skin before he saw the body. And yet, it still made his blood run cold, terror spreading through him before he finally started noticing the differences. It was Marissa's body. Not Emma's. And the back door was wide open. She'd made it outside. Escaped the fire. He rushed to the door, finally noticing the sound of his brother calling out his name too.

Because while Klaus' had been ready to rush into the house with Kol the moment he took in the sight of it, he stopped. Just in time to hear something else. Faint, and barely there, growing weaker with each second that passed, but he heard it. And instead of going into the house, Klaus went in a different direction, running down the path beside it and coming upon the sight of Emma's body.

She lay sprawled out on the ground, her skin as pale deadly pale, and covered in blood. As if that wasn't enough, Klaus easily noticed the way her chest remained still, not breaths coming in or out.

"Kol!" Klaus called out.

Biting into his wrist, he was by her side in the blink of an eye and picking up her head so the blood could slip down her throat. "Come on, love. You have to drink." Klaus pleaded as she continued to remain unresponsive. "Kol!" He called to his brother again, this time grateful to be heard as Kol appeared on Emma's other side.

For a moment, Klaus worried about his brother's reaction to the amount of blood, fearful about what it may do to Kol's lack of control. But it was as if he didn't even register any hunger. Instead, Kol's arm replaced Klaus', supporting her head as he started to brush some of the hair out of her face, hand coming to rest on her cheek.

"Come on, Emma. You have to drink." He pleaded with her, but still Emma did not move. "Listen to my voice, darling. I'm right here. Please, drink." Kol continued to plead, even as Klaus started to believe it to be a lost cause. He was ready to remove his wrist, but then she stirred, and breath returned to her lungs.

But while Klaus wanted to focus on that, he couldn't. Not once her hand came to his arm, holding it to her mouth as she drank some more of the blood. And as it did, he felt a sharp pain spread though him. He couldn't help but cry out in surprise, pulling his arm away and cutting off the red glow that had him staring at Emma in shock.

She acted as if nothing happened, coughing violently as Kol took her into his arms, not even fighting against the pain she was causing him as he whispered reassuring words in her ear. "You're safe now, darling. Everything's okay." He whispered soothingly, ignoring the look on his brother's face.

Kol's voice seemed to have the desired calming effect, the glow slowly subsiding and Klaus' watched his brother's body relax along with her. Emma let out a couple of more coughs, seeming like she was trying to say something, but before she could her eyes closed shut again.

If it weren't for the fact that he could see all of her wounds had healed and the colour was returning to her skin, Kol would have been panicking again. But Klaus' blood had healed her. it was why he didn't bother moving as she subconsciously siphoned him. Because if she was siphoning his magic, she wasn't siphoning the magic of the blood healing her.

"What the bloody hell was that?" Klaus finally found his voice, a sharp look fixed at his brother, demanding Kol to finally meet his stare. He did, but he didn't explain anything to Klaus. Not yet.

"Later." Kol moved his head in the direction of the street, the flashing lights of emergency vehicles starting to illuminate each and every corner. "I'll take her to Rebekah's. You deal with the Sheriff." Kol instructed his brother, scooping up Emma in his arms as gently as he could without waking her before he rose to his feet. He was about to run off, but turned to his brother one last time. "And wherever Rebekah is, tell her to come too."

He had his suspicions about what may have happened to their sister, her absence at a time like this most likely not being of her own volition. He didn't question Klaus on it, but simply made the request before leaving him with no time to protest or try and find his way out of it. Kol disappeared from the scene, Emma cradled in his arms.

"Whatever explanation he wants, you don't have to give it to him now. He can huff and puff but he can't enter the house." It was Rebekah's voice that brought Kol out of the memory again, his eyes turning to watch her as she entered the room quietly. He noticed the blood staining her shirt, right where her heart should be, and for a moment he wanted to question what their brother had done. But at the same time, it made him realize the exact reason why his sister's words were wrong.

"No, I do. Because brother dearest needs to be made aware of the rules." Kol spoke in a determined voice, starting to rise from his chair. But he didn't leave the room, not before turning to Emma's sleeping form one last time. "I'll be right back, darling." He placed a soft kiss to her forehead, knowing that she probably couldn't hear him, but wanting her to know it just in case.

And then he left, leaving his sister to look over Emma, a silent look passing between then as he did. Neither of them wanted to risk her being alone when she woke up. She wouldn't leave at any point while he was gone. Rebekah didn't mind not being present for the conversation. She could always listen in from right there, and it was exactly where she wanted to be.

At first, she fell into a rage when Klaus first undaggered her in the Salvatore Boarding House, demanding to know how much time had passed before she ripped his head off. But then he explained what had happened, all of it. And her anger was momentarily forgotten. She would rip him to pieces later, but now her friend needed her.

Kol rushed down the stairs, appearing in the doorway of the house, but not stepping outside as he faced his brother. If the blood on his sister's clothes was anything to go by, Klaus had daggered her earlier in the night. It was why she hadn't answered his calls, why she hadn't come until now. And if he'd removed the dagger to allow her to come, that meant he had it somewhere on his person. Kol wasn't about to risk being its next victim once his brother got enraged by learning of all the secrets that have been kept from him.

"What is she?" Klaus was the first of the two to speak up. Kol recognized the look in his eyes. His brother was preparing, planning, evaluating what had happened and what had to be done because of it.

"A witch. A special kind that can take magic from any supernatural creature, magical or spelled object." Kol gave the short explanation. He didn't go into more details of how it was the only way for her to use magic. He wasn't about to expose Emma's weaknesses to his brother. "But that's not what matters. What matters is what you're gonna do about it." Kol started to say, ready to explain to his brother why the answer to that was a simple 'Nothing'.

"She lied to me. Deceived me into thinking she was human." Klaus snarled, ready to do what he needed to. He remembered the pain she caused him clearly. He wasn't about to let her use the magic she possessed against him. In his own twisted mind, Klaus believed that tonight's events had only exposed her true nature and plans.

"She didn't lie to you, Nik. Not when you first met, not for a long time because she herself didn't know she could do it." Kol revealed. "And once she found out, I was the one who told her not to tell you." He added on, ready to take as much of Klaus' rage as possible onto himself.

"And you believed her? You would endanger our family like this?!" Klaus questioned in disbelief. "I knew you had an affinity for witches, brother, but this goes beyond that."

"Lower your voice." Kol snarled at his brother, taking one step closer, but not close enough to put himself within Klaus' reach. "And take a moment to try and dig yourself out of that paranoid spiral that is your mind." He added on, words met with a glare, but he didn't let it deter him. "The first time she used her magic in front of me was to save me, Nik. To keep me from being captured by the council just as Rebekah was. The next time, she used it to find her and rescue her. Even if you didn't know, Nik, she's been using it for us. So don't talk to me of betrayal because there hasn't been any."

Kol's words managed to break through to some surprising corner of Klaus' mind and render him silent for just a bit. His mind ran over his memories, wondering what signs he'd missed. The first he thought of being the night the Salvatores dessicated him. The way she'd reached for Tyler even before he took hold of her. She was ready to do it then. In front of him. But Kol had stopped her and taken her away.

"So, what you will do, Nik, is nothing." Kol finally added on, coming to the point he wanted to reach ever since the conversation started. "Not only because she's been through enough tonight, and your ire is the last thing I'll expose her to. But also because you have your little trip to go on, and by the time you return. We'll be gone."

Kol's revelation hit Klaus with a new wave of surprise, but his brother didn't stick around to explain what he meant when he said they'd be gone. Instead, Kol turned his back to his brother and walked back up the stairs. He'd been away from Emma's side for long enough, and he was anxious to return to where he was actually supposed to be.
