《Breathing ∞ Kol Mikaelson [1]》[54]

"So let me get this straight... You have a big-ass mansion to live in, with probably around thirty or more rooms, but that's just not good enough?" Emma raised an eyebrow at Rebekah as the two of them walked into a large house. There were no issues considering it was for sale and currently had no owner.

"I have no issue with the house." Rebekah pointed out, eyes scanning around the large foyer and the halls extending from it. "It's the people inside who are the problem."

"Kol being a nuisance?" Emma asked jokingly, a smile spreading over her face. "If you want I can talk him into leaving you alone." She offered, but while it made Emma herself laugh, Rebekah's reaction was more akin to disturbed.

"I do not want to know how you'd do that." The blonde grumbled. While, most of the time, she was happy that Emma never tried keeping Rebekah in the dark about... Whatever it was that was happening between her and her brother, there were also times where she could remain blissfully ignorant about it.

"Oh get your mind out of the gutter." Emma lightly hit Rebekah's shoulder, laughing at the insinuation. Even though, despite her words, whatever she tried to get Kol to leave Rebekah alone for a bit, it probably would end in the way Rebekah was insinuating it would.

"But to answer your question. No, this is about Nik." Rebekah returned to the topic at hand. "He may be gone now, but he'll come back. And when he does, I do not want to be there."

Rebekah's anger with her brother still remained strong. Not that Emma could blame her. She herself may have had an easy time forgiving him, but that was because he wasn't her family. And she never had any reason to think he'd care more about her than his plans for a hybrid army. It made sense why his sister, who'd loyally stood by his side for centuries, would expect more of him.

"And you've chosen this place." Emma stated, knowing that Rebekah was here to sign the final papers as she bought the spacious home. "I like it. There's a lot of light, and it's just that perfect mix of old and still looking new. If that makes any sense."

"I'm glad you do." Rebekah said as they came to stand in front of a table in the dining room on which the papers were spread out, a pen ready and waiting for Rebekah to sign. "Because you'll be owning it."

"I'm sorry... I'll be what now?" Emma blanked at that statement, not sure it was properly registering in her mind. Maybe she'd heard Rebekah wrong?

"If the point is to get away from my brother, I can't just buy a house he can enter any time he pleases to." Rebekah pointed out, picking up the pen and handing it over to Emma.

"Because Klaus wouldn't kill me just so he can come in." Emma pointed out, and continued on with more technicalities. "And I wouldn't be living here. What if someone needs to get inside while I'm not around?"

"If I want them inside, I can just call you. And if not, well that's even better then." Rebekah easily rebuffed the technicalities. She seemed entirely convinced in the idea being a good one. But seeing the unconvinced look on Emma's face made her continue. "It's how my family handles most of our properties. Although, usually the humans are compelled."

"You know, this... It wouldn't be a... Permanent solution?" Emma started to point out the fact that someone might not have to kill her to gain entry soon enough. Especially if... Nope, no, she wouldn't think of that. She was just being paranoid. If her father was in town they'd know by now. It was over a week ago that she thought she saw him and since then, nothing else happened.

"Oh, don't worry. Klaus will give up after a few decades anyways." Rebekah either didn't even catch on to what Emma meant, or was completely ignoring it. Making the brunette shake her head as she finally accepted the pen from Rebekah's hand. "And, I spoke to your mother after the funeral, she thinks it's a good idea too."

"I'm sorry, you talked to my mother about this? And she thinks it's a good idea?" Emma questioned, most certainly surprised. The revelation had her pause for another moment, not yet going to sign the papers.

"Well, because of Damon's incompetence the hunter now thinks you have no taste and are associated with him. Marissa thinks it'd be best if you stopped spending so much time alone at home." Rebekah said honestly.

"And you're now on a first name basis with my mother." Emma wondered what was happening with the world. But considering her mother had been calling her almost every hour when she was alone at home, what Rebekah said did make sense.

"Alright, but just remember, if you ever want me off the deed, you just have to ask. No reason to kill me over it." Emma finally gave in, looking to the papers where she needed to sign. She was actually signing a deed to a property, and a large one at that... What the fuck?

As Rebekah continued to point to the lines Emma needed to fill out, a short silence lapsed over them. Until the blonde decided to break. "While on the topic of permanency and time," The blonde started, making it clear that she did actually catch on to what Emma meant before. "Have you told Kol yet?" But she focused on a part that Emma didn't want her to.

"We're not having this conversation." Emma said firmly, really, really not wanting to talk about this. Of course the thought had crossed her mind about a dozen times by now. And every time she told herself she'd do it. And then she saw him, and she chickened out.

"Emma, you need to tell him." Rebekah's tone was just as firm, unwilling to let go. The more time she spent around Emma and her brother, the more Rebekah was actually starting to believe Kol might care. It was surprising, bordering on miraculous, but it seemed to be the truth. And Rebekah worried about what might happen when he found out.

"Why? I mean, Kol isn't the type to get too attached, right?" Emma tried to make up excuses once she finished all the signing, leaving the papers to the real estate agent who'd so far been somewhere in the house, compelled by Rebekah to leave them alone.

And once she was done, Rebekah linked their hands together, starting to drag Emma out of the house and to her car. They had school to get to, and by the time it was over, Emma would be inviting Rebekah into the blonde's own home.

Seeing the look Rebekah sent her, Emma knew her excuse wasn't going to slide. "I know, I know. I just... He's fun, and makes me happy and when I'm with him not only do I forget about the fact that I'm dying, but he makes me feel like I can do anything." Emma started to explain as she started the car and drove away from the house.

In the days since the Council's vampire hunt, Kol had started to help Emma learn more about what she could do with her magic and teaching her how to use it. But it wasn't just that. He made her stop worrying for just a moment about everything else going on and just focus on him and herself and what they were doing.

"Telling him changes all that." Rebekah's words didn't come out as a question. Perhaps she'd never had to tell someone that she was dying, but having to tell someone that you're already dead came as somewhat of a similar thing. And it was something she'd experienced before. She could understand why Emma was hesitant to face what may come after such a revelation.

"I promise, I will tell him." Emma turned her eyes to Rebekah for a moment so that the blonde could see that she was being honest about that. "I just need to find the right moment." She added on while pulling into the parking lot of the school.

"I don't think there's ever a right time for something like that." Rebekah said sympathetically as the two jumped out of the car. Emma took in a heavy sigh, and the universe chose that moment to remind her that Rebekah had a point. A series of coughs wracked through her body.

Luckily, Rebekah didn't comment on it, and instead took the conversation in a different direction as something caught her eye. Everyone was focused on some kind of piece of paper, many holding their own copies. Not liking being in the dark, Rebekah snatched a copy from the hand of one student as he passed by them, going to Emma's side as she read through it.

"Someone throwing a party?" Emma asked curiously, watching as a smirk passed over Rebekah's face. Emma knew the blonde's 'I have an idea' face well by now.

"Yes. We are." Rebekah announced, placing the paper into Emma's hands so she could read through it while she herself headed off towards the school. Reading through the curfew announcement, Emma couldn't help but laugh. Of course Rebekah would be one of those with a screw it type of attitude.

While Rebekah had compelled herself time with the printer in the teacher's lounge, Emma decided actually going to class. Even though it didn't really matter if she missed some of them, she wasn't going to school just to skip it. However, as she walked through the halls, she spotted one person that interrupted her idealism of being a good student and instead forced her to change direction.

"Caroline, wait up!" Emma called out, making the blonde turn to her with a curious look in her eyes. Emma couldn't fault her for it. While at the memorial service things had been somewhat friendly between the lot of them, it wasn't like it actually made them friends. But it also wasn't like Emma was going over to her just to 'girl talk'.

"Hey, Emma. What's up?" Caroline asked curiously as the two stood at the blonde's locker. Caroline was trying to think up a reason why Emma would talk to her, but she was coming up with nothing.

"I just wanted to make a suggestion." Emma started up. "With the new psycho vampire hunter in town, and Damon doing his best to expose all of us, including those who aren't even vampires, I was thinking it might be smart to share information if we have any." Emma said.

"Oh, I mean, sure, but it's not like it's as important to you." Caroline pointed out the same thing Tyler had at the service. She seemed somewhat hesitant, not sure about the idea and where it may be coming from.

"True, but it's still easier to know things." Emma pointed out, not really in the mood to argue the point that Rebekah and Kol had just as much right to know about someone that may be a threat. Even if he wasn't as much of a threat. "I'm not asking to sit around the fire and sing Kumbaya. I'm just saying, if anyone with vervain gloves, for example, is walking around, we tell each other." Emma said. "I mean, the only reason we know there's a hunter in town is because I overheard your conversation."

"Yeah, I suppose you're right." Caroline admitted with a nod of her head as she pulled out her phone. "Here, give me your number in case I need it for something like that. And I can give you mine." Caroline accepted. Emma wasn't sure whether she was expecting more resistance, but she wasn't about to protest the lack of it. Instead, she simply handed Caroline her phone while taking hers.

"And, as Tyler said, once we're rid of him, we can all go back to hating each other." Emma joked as she typed her number into Caroline's phone, at first not noticing the wide eyed look on Caroline's face as she remembered something.

"Right, Tyler." Caroline muttered, making Emma's eyes glance back up to her. The curious look in her eyes making the blonde continue. "Well, since we're sharing. Connor, the hunter, came after Tyler again last night."

"For fuck's sake. Guy's persistent, I'll give him that." Emma shook her head in annoyance. She also couldn't help but wonder why in the world Connor decided to set his sights on Tyler so adamantly. It's not like he didn't know of at least two other vampires in town.

"He didn't try to kill him though." Caroline added quickly, making Emma's brows furrow. "He just took some of his werewolf venom." Caroline revealed making dread was over Emma's face.

"And Klaus' is out of town. God, can this guy just die already?" She spoke in an annoyed tone, Caroline unable to resist a small laugh at it. "But see? This is the perk of sharing. While it may not kill them, the Originals still experience the symptoms of the bite. And no one wants batshit Originals running around doped up on wolf venom."

"True." Caroline nodded her head in agreement. She had to admit, Emma's idea was a smart one. And remembering Emma's words about Connor being on the Mikaelson's kill list, she suspected that it might pay off for their group too if Emma or the Originals learned of something else.

"I promise I'll return the favour if I hear anything." Emma sent the blonde a small smile as they returned their phones to each other.

"You hear things?" Caroline asked, somewhat surprised. She always thought of Emma as more just along for the ride, not actually that involved in it. It was hard to believe that the Mikaelsons would trust a human so much.

"You and your group really need to remember that human hearing doesn't equal deaf." Emma laughed as started to walk backwards as the last bell rang. Sending a last wave to Caroline, she turned around and headed to class, feeling some relief that she managed to accomplish what she wanted to. Now she just had to warn the two original vampires to be on the lookout for a hunter running around with werewolf venom.
