《Breathing ∞ Kol Mikaelson [1]》[51]

Kol and Emma made their way through the large house in search of one particular person. Rebekah wasn't with them, having announced she had one more thing to do before facing their brother again. "You dick!" Emma was the first to speak as she and Kol finally located which room of the Mikaelson mansion Klaus was hiding in.

She didn't really care whether her fist smacking into Klaus' shoulder hurt him or not. It was still something that needed to be done as her lecture began. "You made us think you were dead! Gone, done for, never coming back! And yet you were happily stored away in the body of Tyler Lockwood!?"

As she spoke, Kol simply leaned against the door behind them, observing the situation in amusement. It was rare that someone other than Elijah scolded Klaus. He was eager to soak in every moment of it.

"Don't let it get to you love, I couldn't risk someone exposing my plan." Klaus simply replied, the smirk on his face showing how unbothered by it all he was. It made Emma want to hit him again.

"Right, because we're so well known for running to the Salvatores and letting them know your plans?" Emma spoke in a sarcastic tone, raising an eyebrow at him, still not pleased with the answer.

"Perhaps not, but your worry for me, and fear of Tyler Lockwood certainly helped sell it." Klaus taunted, and this time Emma did hit him again. Well, at least she tried to. Klaus grabbed hold of her wrist before she could. "Now, now love. Let's not get too bent up over it. I'm sorry. There, does that help?"

"You're still a dick." Emma grumbled, not bothering to point out the fact that he sounded entirely insincere in his words. "And lucky I'm in a forgiving mood."

"Benevolence all around." Klaus said happily, although the smile didn't quite reach his eyes which instead held a small glare as he turned to look at his brother standing behind Emma, much closer now than he was before, regarding the hybrid with a warning look. "I myself have put my brother's betrayal behind us." Klaus said, referring to the fact that while Klaus was getting dessicated, Kol ran off with Emma instead of helping.

"You're immortal and their sire, Nik. They wouldn't have killed you." Kol rolled his eyes at his brother's dramatics. The message was clear, even though he didn't say it fully. Unlike Klaus, Emma could have gotten hurt.

"Right, because you, little brother, don't like to share your toys. Isn't that right?" Klaus taunted, and the more he spoke the more it became clear he was building up to a point. And Kol could see it too. The light-hearted amusement was gone from his face. Unlike Emma, he knew what Klaus was leading up to.

Seeing the questioning look on the face of the human standing between them, Klaus continued. "You yourself said it Emma, you heard the stories. How long is it before you tire of this one and kill her, brother?"

"Alright, then." Emma said, taking a step to the side so that she was no longer standing between the two. She wasn't sure how to react to the question. Because he was right. She'd known the stories even before she met him, and once she found out about their... activities together, Rebekah made sure to share even more of them. "You're hurt, you're lashing out, and I'm not really psyched about the idea of being used as a pawn for that. So I'm gonna go." She finally announced, as it seemed like the best thing to do.

She started to make her way out of the room, ignoring the call of her name which came from Kol. And he didn't have much chance to speak either as Rebekah's voice spread through the air, the anger in it as she yelled out Klaus' name very clear. Yup, definitely a smart idea to go now rather than later.

"Call me if you need me." Emma told the blonde as they passed each other in the halls, sending her a small smile before she continued moving towards the door. And so the human left, allowing the vampires to fight among themselves in peace.

Emma moved around the kitchen as she poured herself a glass of water. Her mind was a bit of a jumble. She knew Klaus' jabs at Kol weren't meant to make the younger Mikaelson have a reaction. No, it was her reaction he was looking for. And he got it, even if she hadn't shown it in front of him.

Klaus was right, she knew the stories. And still, she'd let her guard down. And now she couldn't help but wonder whether by doing so she'd led herself to the point of looking through rose coloured glasses. Homicidal maniac; those were the words most often used to describe Kol Mikaelson. And she did have a front row seat to him 'playing with his food', as Rebekah had said, to prove it.

Jumping up to sit on the island, Emma pulled out her bottle of medication, absent-mindedly pulling out the pills all the while the question of whether Kol was playing with her too travelled around her mind. Along the question of whether she even minded.

After all, she was dying anyways, as she kept reminding herself ever since coming to this town. Emma was sure her opinion on it hadn't changed since she last evaluated that fact. And Kol was exciting, and fun, and entertaining. Wasn't that what everyone wanted from their lives before they died?

Yes, there was a chance, if he was playing her, that he'd kill her before her time was actually up. But then again, according to the doctors, her time should have been up long ago, and it would have been if it weren't for vampire blood. She was in unpredictable territory, especially if she stopped drinking it, her time could be up by next week.

Looking over at the map which still lay out on the table, neither of them bothering to clean it up before they went off to find Rebekah, Emma also knew the added perk was learning more magic from him. He wasn't lying when he said he was a good teacher. She could always play him too. Have him teach her more so she could build up her skills before he grew bored with her. Not for the purpose of remaining entertaining or impressive, but to be able to defend herself.

The sound of the doorbell ringing through the house snapped Emma out of her thoughts. Too lazy to get off the counter and go to the door, she simply called out. "It's open!" It was too late for it to be the postman or some delivery, so whoever was at the door could come in on their own. And if they couldn't, well then they weren't someone she wanted to see anyways, probably.

Considering the angry state in which she'd last seen Rebekah, Emma was expecting it to be her blonde friend at the door, too angry with her brother to be willing to spend the night in the same house. She finally popped the pills in her hand into her mouth, drinking the water to down them just as someone appeared at the entrance to the kitchen.

"You ran off quite quickly tonight, darling."

"Kol." Emma jumped in surprise, opening the first drawer she could and stuffing her medicine bottle into it before he could spot it. "What are you doing here?" She questioned.

"Is it so odd that I'd want to check on you?" He questioned, walking closer so that he came to stand in front of her on the counter, his hands leaning on both sides of her. Emma let him get close. The closer he was, the easier it would be to touch him and siphon him.

"Perhaps." Emma said honestly, analytical eyes scanning over his face, trying to decipher the emotions in his eyes. However, she hadn't seen them before, she couldn't place them, she couldn't figure him out.

"Klaus really knows how to get into someone's head." Kol sighed, shaking his head, eyes looking down to the floor for a moment before they returned to her face. "And here I thought we had built up some trust between us." He traced her jaw with his finger, watching as Emma's expression hardened at the words.

"We did." She admitted, and then continued after a small pause which made it clear the words were followed by a but. "And then you lied today. Twice." She called him out on it. Of course, she'd noticed both times. And after what Klaus said earlier tonight, she couldn't help but think to those two moments as well, wondering whether they were a part of the alleged game.

Seeing the questioning look on his face, she proceeded to point out the times when she'd caught him. "The first time, right here in this kitchen. After the spell, something was wrong, I could see it, but you said you were fine. And then later, when you fed on that deputy. Rebekah said you were playing with your food, you said it was because he shot you. If his last words were anything to go on, there's more to it. You needed information. Information you didn't share after you got it."

Kol listened to her intently, his turn to watch her face and read the expressions on it as she spoke. She was good at reading people, it was one of the first things he'd learned about her. And here she was, making him question whether she was just that good or if after a century of being daggered he'd lost his edge. Because she was completely right, about both times.

"And you want to know the truth." He nodded his head in understanding. It wasn't even a question, he knew it's what she wanted.

"Trust is a two way street." Emma said simply, her voice quieter than before as she let her thoughts wonder if he'd be honest. Or if asking for the truth was the step over the line and her entertaining nature no longer outweighed the need to protect his secrets.

"Alright, the truth it is, darling." The surprise on her face was seeping through, beyond her control in trying to mask it. But she didn't question it. Instead, she let him talk. "The first time I lied was because I didn't want you to know what your siphoning does."

"What does it do? And why would you not want me to know it?" Kol's revelation obviously made Emma more suspicious of him at first. Not telling her something about that meant he didn't want her to know all that she could do.

"Because it hurts. I do believe it's because you're taking the magic which is the only reason I'm alive. Either way, it's not too pleasant." Kol revealed continuing on with the path of honesty. Observing her, waiting for a moment where she backed away because she thought he was lying again. She didn't.

"And you didn't want me to know I can cause you pain." Emma raised an eyebrow at him, a cold look in her eye as she traced patterns on the top of his hand beside her, doing so for a moment before she did what she planned. She didn't siphon a lot, just a little, and watched as he tried to hide the small grimace from his face.

"No. Because we were headed into what might be a fight, I didn't want you hesitating." He revealed despite the pain, and then it suddenly stopped. Emma's wide eyes focused on him, bot surprised and questioning, trying to figure out if he was lying, using the situation they were in at the time to spin a story that would sound better than the truth.

With the siphoning done, Kol took Emma's hand in his own, bringing it to his chest and placing it right where his heart was. Emma could feel the soft thump against the palm of her hand. "I once told you your heartbeat gives you away when you lie. The same goes for me." He said. "I told you to take what you need. And I mean it, not just then, but whenever you need it."

Emma listened to his words, noting that not for a moment did the steady and calm beat beneath her hand change. A silence spread over them, Emma trying to process what he'd just said. And then she remembered. "And the deputy?" She asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"He saw you use magic. I thought it best to find out if he told anyone who could spread the information." Kol revealed. "It wouldn't be good if it reached unwanted ears." The explanation was simple, and considering the words she'd heard the man call out before his death, the truth was harder to spin this time.

"Why lie about that though? It was just me and Rebekah." Emma couldn't help but wonder about it. Elena and Damon were too busy with their argument and Stefan and Matt were no where to be seen. They weren't listening to them.

"Because Rebekah would tell Nik." Kol said, leading into the main topic he wanted to discuss, one of the reasons he'd come here in the first place. "The first night we returned, my brother described you as intelligent enough to be dangerous, but as a human, not a threat."

Emma was quickly catching on. She'd spent all her time knowing Klaus, with him believing she was ordinary, normal and weak. If she revealed her magic now, he'd think she lied. His paranoid mind would jump to conclusions and who knows what the consequences of it would be.

"But you're not that at all. Your touch alone, has the power to weaken us." Kol said, playing with the free hand which was not resting on his chest. "At best, Klaus would use it for his own gain, at worst..."

"His paranoid mind would turn against me."

"Promise me, whatever you decide about me, you'll be careful around him at least." Kol hooked his finger under her chin, making her look up at him to show how serious he was being. And Emma nodded her head in acceptance. She knew she couldn't lie to Klaus forever, it would just make it worse, but she did plan on being careful about it too.

After that, a short silence spread over them as they looked at each other, both trying and wishing they could read the other's mind. Until Kol finally broke it with the question that had been running through his. "And your decision about me?"

The look on his face as he asked the question made it impossible for Emma not to laugh. She didn't give him her answer through words, however, instead, her free hand reached up, wrapping around his neck as she pulled him closer. As their lips connected, she could feel two things; the smile on his face as he kissed her back, and, for the first time that night, his heartbeat sped up.

At first the kiss was a gentle and reassuring one, but once the message of it became clear, Kol deepened it, his hands coming to her hips, pulling her closer into him while both of hers tangled in his hair. She felt her skin burn in the places where his hands slipped beneath the hem of her shirt. And the realization of how much she wanted him to take it off, made her pull away for a moment.

"Hold on." She said, opening her eyes and catching the small pout on his face which made her laugh. "Oh don't look at me like that, it's just for a second." She said with a smirk, tremendously enjoying seeing the effect she had on him as she pushed him so she could jump down from the counter.

"Are you serious? You leave me here, eager and waiting, to clean?" Kol asked, unsure of whether to laugh and just sweep her off her feet and tear her away from what she was doing instead of kissing him. "You know, it's not smart to keep me waiting, darling?"

Emma laughed at him again, but she knew she had to clean up the table where all the remnants of magic still remained before she could do anything else. If she didn't then it'd be left out for her mother to find in the morning because Emma would be too exhausted to do it later.

"You know, you could help and then you wouldn't have to wait too long." She pointed out, turning her back to him again as she collected the notebooks. Kol knew she was right, especially if he simply did it much faster than humanly possible. But for a moment, he used the chance her back was turned.

Working quickly so she wouldn't notice, he pulled open one of the drawers in front of him. The one he'd seen her use to hide the small orange bottle from him when he entered. His eyes zeroed in on it, the label staring up at him as he memorised the words on it before closing the drawer again. He put it into the back of his mind, sorting it as one of the things he'd inquire about later as he made his way to stand behind her.

"I have a different idea." He said, his hands wrapping around her as he started to kiss her neck, momentarily lingering with his lips on the spot where he could feel her heart, the fast pace of it, smell the blood rushing through her veins as she leaned into him. "I can just do it later." He finally tore his lips away, speaking before he snatched her up, leaving no room to argue as he speed away from the table and into her bedroom, relishing in the sound of her laughter as he did so.
