《Breathing ∞ Kol Mikaelson [1]》[46]

Emma lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling, nails tapping against the surface of her phone which lay on her stomach. A part of her hated this, hated being entirely out of the loop as everyone else went out there to save the day. She had no idea what was going on, whether the plan was working, and whether they were all alright. And it wasn't like she could just call someone. So, instead, she had to wait for someone to call her.

That was another reason she wasn't planning on following in her mother's footsteps when it came to being this siphoner thing or whatever. She could use it not only to protect herself but also to help her friends. She just needed to learn how to do that. It wasn't like Emma could just walk up to Bonnie and ask her to teach her how to be a bigger threat to their group. Although, if the Mikaelsons were leaving, maybe she actually could.

Emma had also considered going to Kol about it and telling him the truth about it. He knew about magic, he could help her as he himself said. She couldn't help but laugh at the thought. He did also say he was expecting her to come to him on her own sooner or later and here she was debating doing just that.

But to be able to do anything she had to know he was okay first. God, she really hoped he was okay. That all of them were. Hell, even Elena's vampire friends too. If something went wrong, she wouldn't be surprised if their plan shifted, discarding any idea of helping the Originals in favour of helping themselves first.

Holding in a very loud groan, Emma stood from the bed and started to pace the length of her room. She tried to be as quiet as possible, knowing that by now her mother had already gone to bed and not wanting to wake her. Things with Marissa were tense yet again, and Emma hated it. But that was an issue she could focus on fixing once all of the Alaric troubles were over and handled.

And because of that, and her worried messy mind, once the sound of buzzing started to come from the bed, Emma was jumping on top of the covers to grab her phone, answering the incoming call after only one ring only sparing a moment to glance at the name displayed on her screen.

"Oh thank you! Are you alright? Did everything go okay?" Her questions were instant, a small smile on her face as she was ready to hear some good news and finally relax. But the relief started disappearing the longer her questions were met with silence on the other end of the call. "Kol? Please say something."

"It's... It's Klaus." Kol finally spoke, but he sounded no where near to reassuring. Quite the opposite, the shock in his voice was doing well to mask some of the pain, but Emma could still hear it. "He's dead."

Emma froze at the news, growing silent herself as she tried to process it herself. It seemed impossible. He was Klaus Mikaelson for Christ's sake! He couldn't just be... Gone. She remembered the last time she'd seen him, attacked and betrayed by the Salvatores and Tyler. If she'd only thought faster, grabbed Tyler sooner, perhaps she could have done something to stop them. If he hadn't been dessicated, he would have been able to defend himself.

"Where are you?" Emma shook her head, pushing the thoughts into the back of her mind as she blinked away some of the tears which started to pool in her eyes. The plan had gone wrong, and Kol needed her. Rebekah too probably. God, Rebekah! She was the one going to get Klaus' body from Damon. If Alaric had gotten to Klaus, she was in danger too.

"Woods, outside of Mystic Falls." Kol said, listening to the sounds of shuffling coming from Emma's side of the call as she obviously started to head out of her house. "We're waiting for Rebekah. Alaric, he went after her next."

"I'm on my way." Emma said, already heading out of her room before pausing and remembering one more detail. "Have Elijah send me the exact location." She added, knowing it would be pointless to head into the woods without knowing where exactly they were, and she wasn't sure whether Kol had yet learned how to send a ping.

Pulling on her shoes as she hung up the call, Emma was ready to rush out of the house as her hand grabbed hold of the door knob, but she was forced to stop at the sound of her mother's cough behind her. She turned to her mother, speaking before Marissa even had a chance to open her mouth.

"You can't stop me. I know you don't like it, and you can scold me all you want tomorrow morning, but right now-" Emma started to protest, but was soon interrupted.

"That's not what I'm doing." Marissa said calmly, her hand extending to her daughter and making Emma look down at the dark stone in her mother's hand. "It's obsidian, but that's not the important part. Take it." Marissa instructed and Emma was too confused to object as she took the crystal from her mother's hand. As soon as it came in contact with her skin, Emma could feel why it was important.

"There's not a lot of magic in there, but it's enough in case of emergencies." Marissa explained.

"I don't know any spells." Emma pointed out. She was still getting a hang of siphoning it, even though it was coming more naturally now that she knew how and what it meant.

"Trust your instincts." Marissa smiled at her daughter. "Our magic might be... different. But we still have the instincts of a witch, and those have never failed you before." Emma couldn't keep herself from pausing at the acceptance in her mother's tone.

"Thank you." The younger Park woman finally exhaled, throwing her arms around her mother in a short hug. By doing this, Marissa was openly accepting that her daughter wasn't about to give up her convictions. So the least she could do was make sure she had something that would help her protect herself out there.

Emma couldn't be sure how much she was exceeding the speeding limit, however, she didn't particularly care either as she followed the directions on her phone until she finally arrived to a small clearing among the otherwise thick trees in the middle of nowhere. It wasn't hard to spot the two men standing among them as she jumped out of her car, their eyes turning towards her.

Slowly, she started to walk towards them, watching their faces in the moonlight as she drew closer. Elijah's emotions were clearly written on his face, the shock and grief painting his features. Kol's on the other hand were more subdued. Until the moment Emma was close at least. It was then that he pulled her into his arms, face hiding in her hair as he let his emotions show for just a moment.

She wrapped one of her arms around him, letting him hide while another extended to take hold of Elijah's hand, giving it a gentle squeeze as she spoke, her own eyes brimming with unshed tears. "I'm so sorry." Elijah returned her grasp, all three grieving in silence. Until it was broken by the sound of rustling leaves behind them, making all three turn to look at its source.

"He's gone. There was nothing I could do to stop it." Rebekah's voice cracked as she spoke, the despair in her eyes evident as she spoke of her brother. Emma watched as Elijah approached his sister, wrapping her up in a comforting hug. She couldn't imagine how they must be feeling. For a thousand years they stuck together, even through the bad times and the obstacles in their way. And now Klaus was gone.

Emma's eyes turned back to Kol as he somewhat pulled out of her hold, face back to its controlled expression. His arms remained wrapped around Emma's waist, eyes alert as he kept watch of their surroundings. Alaric was still out there, and they couldn't risk being ambushed in that moment.

"Tyler Lockwood is dead, but the rest survived." Elijah announced. Emma knew it wasn't a good thing, but a part of her had to admit, she didn't feel too bad. He was in part to blame for Klaus' death. "You said that Niklaus turned their bloodline?"

"I thought he did." Rebekah said, the confusion evident on her face. Emma could remember being there when the blonde was revisiting her memories of the past in an attempt to remember who'd turned the woman who started the bloodline from which Katherine Pierce and all of the vampires she turned came from.

"It wasn't me. I didn't like Mary enough to be able to stand her for the rest of eternity." Kol pointed out. He wasn't sure which one of his siblings turned Mary, he'd never cared enough to ask. But he knew with complete certainty it wasn't him.

"It wasn't me." Elijah added on.

"It wasn't me, Elijah." Rebekah shook her head, becoming more certain of the fact that it was Klaus the more they spoke of it. "It was Niklaus. I'm sure of it."

"Then how are they still alive?" Kol questioned, the anger obvious in his voice. He too was there when the Salvatores dessicated their brother. It was their fault he was now dead, and yet they seemed to have no consequences to face for it.

"Could they have found a loophole? Got Bonnie to do something magical to cut their ties to Klaus?" Emma questioned, wondering whether anyone had even thought of the options of trying to cut a vampire sire line. It was something created with magic, surely magic could also be used to undo it without killing any of them in the process?

"We can't focus too much on that. Not now." Elijah shook his head, momentarily dismissing the question as something they could return to at a later time. "The hunter could be upon us at any moment. We have to leave."

And he had a point. Neither Rebekah nor Kol protested it, despite the hesitant look on their eyes. Neither wanted to have to leave. But their plan had failed, and Alaric was still in possession of the stake, making him even more dangerous than he would have been if they'd gotten it.

Elijah could understand his siblings' need for more time, and so he was the first to speak. "Emma, I want to thank you, for all you've done for my family. I hope we see each other again some day." He spoke to the human girl, a grateful look in his eyes.

"I hope so too." Emma sent him a small smile before watching him rush off at an inhuman speed, leaving her standing with Rebekah and Kol alone. And she somewhat hated it. They'd already said goodbye, but this time was different. Alaric was a bigger threat, and because of that, she couldn't be sure whether any of the promises or plans they'd made could come true now.

Emma was the first to move. Stepping away from Kol, she walked to Rebekah, throwing her arms around the blonde with a tight grip. "It's just six months. It'll pass in no time, and then we can see each other again." She said. Being unsure of the possibility didn't mean she wouldn't do her damn best to make it happen nonetheless.

"Right, six months." Rebekah's voice was distant as she returned Emma's hug. Were it any other kind of situation, Emma would have probably questioned it, trying to get to the bottom of what may be on Rebekah's mind in that moment. However, she thought it was simply because of the shock of all that had happened that night and the pain of losing her brother.

"I'll give you two some time." Rebekah said, pulling out of Emma's arms as she tried to give her friend a small smile. But it was obvious she didn't truly feel the positivity she was trying to convey. Emma also missed the momentary look Rebekah sent towards her brother, silently letting him know she'd be back once his goodbyes were over. But before Kol could comment on it, she was gone in the blink of an eye.

"We already said goodbye." Emma pointed out with a sad look in her eyes as she turned back to him but remained in her spot still. That didn't stop him from approaching though.

"I like to live in excess." He teased lightly, but his eyes didn't hold the spark that usually accompanied the tone. He wasn't about to let her walk off without a goodbye, and so he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into his chest one last time for who knows how long.

"Keep your promise." Emma whispered.

"And you keep yours."

Emma pulled away first, but didn't let go of him just yet. Her eyes took in his face, glancing to his lips one last time. But this time, she didn't kiss him because she knew if she did, she wouldn't have the strength to let go. And so instead, she released him, stepping away and letting her legs carry her back to her car. This time it was Kol watching her walk away from him, catching her eye only one more time before she jumped into her vehicle and drove away. Leaving him standing alone in the forest. And then his sister reappeared the same second the car was fully out of sight.

"Elijah's, right, we shouldn't linger. Alaric might've followed you." Kol turned serious, his expression going back to neutral as his eyes scanned the trees. He didn't want to risk lingering here any longer.

"I don't care." Rebekah's voice came out cold and unfeeling, making his eyes turn back to her, brows furrowed and somewhat concerned.

"Don't turn suicidal on me now, Rebekah." Kol had never gotten as attached to the promise of 'Always and forever' as his sister had, but if it were up to him, he wasn't about to let it drag her down alongside their brother.

"I'm not."

"Then what are you talking about?" Kol questioned, growing confused as he found himself unable to read her mind and figure out what she was saying.

"Elijah's deal with Elena is off. We didn't get Klaus' body back. Meaning we don't have to uphold our end. I've been running for a thousand years. I don't want to waste any more time on it." Rebekah explained, her voice firm, showing just how impossible it would be to convince her otherwise. However, that was why she'd asked Kol to wait and hear her plan. Not Elijah.

"You want to kill her." He concluded.

"I will kill her." The blonde corrected the wording.

"Well you know I won't stop you." She knew he wouldn't try to, unlike their eldest brother. Perhaps Rebekah was ensuring their mutual destruction once Elijah did find out, but Kol couldn't care less about the life of Elena Gilbert. And if it meant not having to run again, he could handle his brother's wrath.

"Good." Rebekah said simply, about to turn away and run, probably to go searching for Elena and end all this trouble once and for all. However, before she set off, she turned back to her brother again, calling out his name to stop him from leaving as well. "I don't know what you're doing, but if you hurt her, I won't need a white oak stake to kill you." The threat was clear, and also the last thing she said before disappearing.
