《Breathing ∞ Kol Mikaelson [1]》[38]

With her hands on the wheel, Emma did her best to keep her eyes on the road while laughing in amusement. She was on her way to Rebekah's, as was their plan. However, the phone call which came through just as she was leaving her house made her lonely drive much more entertaining.

"And is there a lucky gentleman who gets to take you to this dance my sister is in such a tizzy about?" Kol's questioning voice came over the speaker-phone once again and Emma couldn't resist the small smirk which spread across her lips.

Surprisingly, ever since their unconventional exchange of numbers, Kol and Emma continued to keep in contact with each other. Whether it be through texts or calls, the two continued to reach out to one another. And it all started with a surprising text from Kol the night of Finn's death when he wanted to ensure she'd gotten home safely.

"Don't tell me you're jealous." Emma teased the vampire boldly. She doubted it to be true, but she couldn't pass up the opportunity. Her doubts, however, proved quite incorrect.

"Maybe I just don't like sharing." Kol suggested easily, making her let out another laugh of amusement. Someone had some catching up with the times to do.

"While that may be true, you don't control what I do." Emma pointed out firmly. She hadn't meant to make it rhyme, but it just gave her words a better ring in the end.

"You still haven't answered my question, darling." Kol pointed out, the smile clear in his voice. He too seemed as if he was merely having fun annoying her and nothing more. But Emma couldn't fail to notice the interest in her answer as her brought it back up again.

"I guess you'll never know, darling." She replied mysteriously. No, she didn't have a date to the dance, but he didn't need to know that. Kol Mikaelson liked a challenge and, while it came as a surprise even to herself, Emma was giving him one.

Before Kol could come up with his own reply, Emma spoke again as she came to park her car in front of the Mikaelson home just in time to see Rebekah and Klaus making their way outside with determined steps. "I'm at your house, and your brother has his plotting face on, so I'll have to call you back."

"I'll hold you to that promise." Kol said, making Emma smile as she jumped out of the car. She could hear sounds of a conversation starting up in the background of Kol's line. "And seems my entertainment has arrived as well. Don't get yourself killed."

"Goodbye, Kol." Emma said with a shake of her head before hanging up the phone. She didn't bother stepping towards the siblings whose path was headed right for her anyways.

"Come along, love, you get a front row seat to our victory." Klaus' words may have been cryptic, but they were enough to get Emma to follow. Victory sounded really entertaining.

Coming out of one car and into another, Emma curiously watched their surroundings pass by until she recognized the direction they were headed in. And it didn't take long for their destination to be reached. The Salvatore Boarding House was lit up from the inside, someone was home. But Klaus didn't let himself be deterred by that. Instead, he walked right in with the two women following closely behind him.

Emma wasn't sure what she expected victory to look like, but lounging around on the couch in the Salvatore's living room while listening to Rebekah narrate Stefan and Evil-Alaric's conversation to her seemed rather relaxed. To be honest, she was expecting a bit more blood.

And then the conversation stopped. The sound of footsteps which even Emma herself could hear made it clear Stefan was walking right towards them. He wasn't there when Klaus decided to make himself welcome in the home, so of course, as the Salvatore's eyes caught sight of them, the surprise in them was hard to control.

"That wasn't too hard, was it?" Klaus questioned with a smirk on his face. Mr Saltzman's evil, vampire-hating persona hiding the stake which he'd been given threw a bit of a wrench into the Mikaelson's plan to obtain the last of the weapons which could harm them. But now that Evil-Alaric had spilled the beans on its location, everything was looking rosy again. "Rebekah, go fetch the vampire hunter."

Rebekah didn't hesitate in doing as Klaus said. She was as eager as he to get this last stake and be rid of them all. While they waited for Rebekah's return, Klaus continued to move around the large living room as if it were his own as he poured himself a glass of bourbon.

"I must thank you, Stefan. I was worried we might be facing an entirely different outcome when I headed over here." Klaus said in his signature mocking tone, sounding as if he and Stefan were the best of friends and doing one another favours all the time.

"We don't know if he's telling the truth. And he won't cooperate, no matter how much you threaten him." Stefan pointed out. He wished he had the chance to get to the stake first. However, if Alaric was lying, then Klaus would only become enraged again. Stefan didn't want the retribution to fall upon them.

"What exactly was it that he said about where he hid it?" Emma asked, her head turning towards Klaus curiously. Of course, Rebekah told her about what he said and Emma knew about the caves. She wasn't asking for herself.

"In the cave where no vampire can get it." Klaus quoted. "And then he laughed, quite menacingly too."

"Sounds like you could really use a human friend right about now." Emma mumbled, her tone making it seem as if she were struggling to think of one, but the pointed look she directed at Stefan made the meaning quite clear. Alaric could be uncooperative all he wanted, if the stake truly was in the caves, then he wasn't the only one they could use to find it.

"See? I knew there was a reason we keep you around." Klaus said with a wide smile on his face, the mocking words making Emma send him a pointed glare. She too could be uncooperative if he continued to tease.

"Here we go." Rebekah announced her return even before she came into view. But once she did, with the history teacher/vampire hunter in her firm hold, Emma had to keep herself from tapping herself on the back in a congratulatory manner. So there was blood after all, just as she expected. Only it was on Alaric's face and caused by Stefan, not Klaus.

"It's a little gratuitous, don't you think Stefan? I would have been more gentle." Klaus commented once he himself caught sight of Alaric's banged up face. Of course, anyone who knew Klaus, knew that was complete bullshit.

"I'm gonna take him to the caves." Rebekah announced with a pleased tone before turning to the teacher and proceeding to do what Mikaelsons do best. Threaten him. "You're gonna go inside and fetch me the stake. And if you think you can hide, you're wrong." She turned around, ready to walk through the door when Klaus spoke again.

"Take Emma with you." He instructed.

"We shouldn't take unnecessary risks, Nik." Rebekah said, a look of concern flashing over her features as she looked over at Emma. To all in the room, she simply seemed to be uneasy with the idea of taking her friend into what might turn into a dangerous situation.

"Are you saying you're no match for the human, sister?" Klaus questioned. He believed that if Alaric tried anything, Rebekah could handle it without issue. And she should be able to, because, as he said, while he was a hunter, Alaric was still human.

"And I don't mind coming." Emma added on as she finally stood from her seat. "Even if the stake is in the cave, something tells me he might not be too willing to bring it out once he's in there." Emma said. It's what she would do if she were on the other side. After all, in the cave, Rebekah couldn't get to him. She could, however, kill him from a distance and have Emma retrieve the steak once he was dead.

"Go now, we shouldn't leave it lying around for too long." Klaus waved his hand at them dismissively, making it clear there'd be no further argument on the subject. Rebekah remained hesitant, but was clearly unable to come up with a good reason not to bring Emma along. It was true, her presence could be very useful to fulfil Klaus' wishes.

Unlike Rebekah, Emma couldn't simply stalk around dark underground caves without the aid of some light. And since she didn't want to get too close to Alaric and his flash-light, she relied on the one emitting from her phone. And while that helped with walking around, she still realized she wasn't too happy to be here.

Not because of Alaric or anything, simply because she didn't like underground caves. A new discovery she couldn't have foreseen when she volunteered. But since she was here, she decided it'd be best to just get this over with. Better than trying to find her way back to the top alone at least. And she was proven correct as Alaric and Rebekah came to a sudden stop in front of her.

Looking over Rebekah's shoulder, Emma let her flash-light shine over the walls of the cave. She could see the old writings littering almost every surface and remembered what Rebekah had told her about it being the story of the Originals written down by the natives. And in the middle of it was the coffin which once held Esther's body.

"Go get it. You know I can't get in." Rebekah shoved Alaric forward, seeming to grow impatient with how long this was all talking. Emma had noticed the blonde was on edge a bit too much who was about to succeed in obtaining what she wants; what would ensure her safety for all of eternity. But she didn't bring it up, not around Alaric. She'd ask her friend what was bothering her once they were alone again.

Alaric did as he was told, confidently walking through the cave until he reached one of it's walls. However, what Emma's human eyes hadn't seen was a hole in the stones, at least not until he plunged his hand into it and pulled out the sharp piece of wood. He turned back to Rebekah, a defiant look in his eyes as, instead of handing it over, he remained within the cave, leaning back against the coffin as he spoke.

"Now, why would I give you the one thing that requires everyone to keep me alive?" Alaric questioned. He was confident, he knew he was untouchable in here. And it was true, while Emma could enter to collect the stake, she knew she was no match for the man should she need to fight him. To go in, he needed to be incapacitated first.

"Are we bargaining now?" Rebekah questioned in an unimpressed tone. "Fine. What's your offer?"

"There's only one stake out there. Which means only one Original has to die." Alaric started to explain his idea. "Help me, and I'll make sure it's not you."

"Tenuous, but points for effort." Rebekah spoke even before Emma could wonder whether she'd give his offer any thought.

"So, brainstorming for a plan to kill him from a distance?" Emma questioned, sounding completely calm. She may not care for senseless torture or murder of innocents, but Alaric wasn't innocent. He was a threat.

"There will be no need." Rebekah said, her tone holding an edge Emma hadn't noticed before. She had a plan of her own. However, something stirred within Emma, unease that wasn't caused by being in a cave. Something was odd about her friend, and she wasn't bothering to hide it now. Why?

"You see, I don't want one Original to die." Rebekah said, taking a short pause as she continued her stare-down with Alaric. Emma wanted to point out that neither did she, but to ensure that, they needed the dagger kept in a room where Rebekah couldn't go in. However, her words died on her lips as she watched her blond friend step forward. Step past the barrier which kept vampires out. "I want them all to die."

"How the hell did you do that?" Alaric questioned, eyes widening as he stepped back in fear. Emma was wondering the same, but she didn't voice her concern. Instead, she remained quiet, carefully starting to retreat. Let Rebekah and Alaric focus on one another, it gave her a head start to get out of here. Because if one thing was clear, it was that something was very wrong.

"It was easy to fool Niklaus, but I thought you of all people would understand." Emma could still hear their voices as she retreated back to where they came from. Niklaus... there were only a couple of people who called him by his full name. Elijah... and his parents. "After all, my son did use your body at one point."

"You're not Rebekah."

"No. My name is Esther. And we have a great deal in common." It was Rebekah's voice, but it only confirmed to Emma that she was right. And she knew she was no match for a human vampire hunter, much less a witch. It made her forget about stealth as she began to run.

"But first..." Rebekah's voice was still close behind her, and the sound of her footsteps made it clear what she thought must be done first. Emma tried to speed up, but it was pointless. She could hear the blonde's voice, but couldn't understand the words. It sounded like Latin?

Not Latin. Magic. And soon enough Emma could feel it, coursing through her, making her body slow as she experienced the same sensation she'd felt at the Mikaelson ball when she drank the champagne. But before the memory could even register, she felt her mind become cloudy, and vision start to blur. Not long after, even that stopped as everything went dark.
