《Breathing ∞ Kol Mikaelson [1]》[36]

"Filthy rich vampire family living in a mansion, but what's the one thing they don't own? Food!" Emma grumbled to herself in disappointment as she placed some of the bags into the passenger seat of her car. Well, it wasn't that they didn't have any food, but nothing that could really make for a full meal. Human meal, that is.

And, of course, since both Mikaelsons were preoccupied, each with their own prisoner of the day, it was Emma who had to go out and get the food. She thoroughly debated smacking Klaus when he requested a steak for himself. 'Since she was already going' as he said.

Slamming the passenger door shut, Emma checked her phone as she felt it vibrate in the back pocket of her jeans. A text from her mom telling her when she'd be home so Emma could come back. The surprising part in it was for her to return if she wanted to. Implying she could spend more time or possibly even the night at Rebekah's. If there was one good thing to come from her embolism, it was the fact that her mother seemed to finally understand that the Mikalesons weren't a danger to Emma despite their reputation.

She circled her car, about to jump in and drive away without a care, but her ears catching the sound of crying coming from the alley in the back of the Grill had Emma's brows furrowing. For a moment, she debated just ignoring it and moving on. And yet, something inside of her pushed her forward. Keys still clutched in her hand, car remaining unlocked, Emma made sure she could make a quick escape. But still she hoped the worst danger she'd find herself in was needing to find an excuse from staying behind to comfort some heartbroken teenager.

However, as she came to stand on top of the stairs leading down into the narrow alley, Emma was faced with only one half of that. It was heartbreak, for sure, but not that of a teenager. Instead, she easily recognized the flaming red hair of the 900-year-old vampire as she cried over a badly charred body. Although, despite the burns, Emma still had an easy time realizing who it was that Sage was crying over.

She'd seen Finn just that morning when Klaus basically threw him through the door of the Mikaelson home. And now he was dead. Elena and her group had made a move, a successful one. Which could only meant they had more of the white oak. What Sage had shown Rebekah wasn't the last of it. The only reason Finn was in town; all Klaus needed from his older brother was some blood for Bonnie to use during the unlinking spell.

The unlinking spell... Just the thought of it filled Emma with panic. Because when she'd left the house Bonnie still hadn't succeeded and all five siblings were still linked. Her hands started to shake as she once again reached for her phone, pulling it out as she ran back to her car.

Putting the call on speaker phone as she dumped the device in her lap, the first number Emma dialled was Rebekah's, but no answer came. Then Klaus', the pattern repeating itself. Emma tried again with both numbers as she speed away from the Grill, but there was no response. She did the only other thing she could think of. She dialled the number she'd memorised just that morning. One ring. Two rings. Three-

"Hello?"

The first thing she could do was give out a heavy sigh of relief. He answered. He was alive. Meaning the rest of them were too. "Thank god." Emma muttered more to herself than to the person on the other end of the line. But it was enough for him to recognize her voice and know who the unknown number on his screen belonged to.

"Emma? What happened? Are you alright?" Kol's questions came soon after her own words. She could hear the shuffling that had been sounding off in the back suddenly stop as he spoke.

"I'm fine, I'm fine. I was just worried." Emma replied, finally slowing down her car and adjusting the phone which had by now been dangerously hanging off her lap where she'd thrown it in a hurry.

"Worried? About me?" Kol seemed confused by her response. It made Emma aware of the one downside of actually reaching any of the Mikaelsons. She had to say what she'd just seen. And how do you tell someone their brother is dead?

"Kol... It's, uh..." Emma tried to think of the best way to say it.

"Someone's dead? Aren't they?" Kol questioned. It wasn't hard for him to come to the conclusion that one of his siblings had died. It was the only thing that could make Emma possibly worry.

"It's Finn." Emma revealed shortly. He obviously wasn't up to beating around the bush when it came to what she had to reveal. "When I left the house Bonnie still hadn't completed the spell and I thought..." The thought rising in her mind, Emma worried about any possible delays being what was making her conversation with Kol possible.

"I'm fine, darling." Kol reassured. "The witch must've completed it or we wouldn't be talking right now. And I'm sure Rebekah and Klaus are as well." There was a pointed tone in his voice, making Emma wonder whether he could actually hear the fact that she was speeding.

After that, they lapsed into a short silence, both still remaining on the call.

"I'm sorry, about Finn." Emma said. Even though Kol gave no audible reaction to the news of his brother's death, Emma doubted it was an easy thing to go through. The lack of response only confirmed it.

"I'll see you soon, Emma." His next words, coming a couple of long moments later, let Emma know he was about to hang up. But not before adding one more thing. "Drive safely."

"I'll see you soon, Kol."

And with that, their call ended. Emma threw her phone to the passenger seat before continuing to drive back to the Mikaelson house. It took her only a couple of minutes to reach the driveway. She didn't bother locking her car or taking the bags from the passenger seat as she rushed to the door. Throwing it open without a care as she made her way inside.

"Watch over our uninvited guest." She heard Klaus' voice coming from the living room turned torture room before she saw him approach and ran at him. Emma didn't hesitate in smashing her fist against his arm even though she knew it would yield no results.

"Learn how to answer your damn phone, will you?" She scolded him, making sure her voice was loud enough for Rebekah to hear it as well.

"We're alright love." Klaus reassured, motioning for her to follow him impatiently. Emma didn't protest, feeling the need to also see Rebekah for herself, just to be one hundred percent sure.

"You know? Kol got ahold of you?" Emma questioned. However, her first suspicion didn't turn out to be the correct one.

"No, the murderer has decided to confess." Klaus said, his voice filled with venom as he pointed out the guest he'd spoken of before to Emma. Stefan stood in the middle of the room, facing against Rebekah with a large duffel bag in between them.

"As I said, Damon in exchange for the last eight weapons that can kill you." Stefan repeated the offer he'd made before Emma's arrival. The brunette had to hold back a small scoff. No one had showed up to help Damon throughout the whole day, only now, when their plan failed, was he here.

"And how do I know there aren't any more left?" Klaus questioned suspiciously.

"Because there aren't." Stefan tried to sound reassuring. Unsurprisingly, none of them trusted him.

"Maybe you should ask the more reliable narrator?" Emma suggested, her head nodding in the direction of the older Salvatore who still hung by chains from the ceiling. Judging by the blood pooled on a plastic tarp at his feet, Rebekah's goals with her torture were clear. Drain him of the vervain in his system. Stefan could lie, but Damon could not. Not when he's compelled.

"I like the way she thinks. Let's be certain." Klaus said in a dangerously quiet tone, stepping past Stefan and moving over to Damon. Instead of following Klaus' movements, Emma's eyes remained glued to Stefan's face, noticing the small crack in his confidence as he spun on his heel to watch Klaus' whisper in Damon's ear. "Leave."

"No." Damon defied the Mikaelson.

"Go on, leave." Klaus continued to taunt the vampire.

"Nik, he's my plaything, not yours." Rebekah grumbled in protest. This was all about her revenge, and now it was becoming Klaus' new little project. She wanted the joy of making the Salvatore suffer herself, not watching it from the sidelines. But Klaus didn't seem to care.

He grabbed Damon by the neck, turning his head despite the resistance. Eyes piercing into Damon's, Klaus spoke again. "I said, go home." Damon tried to resist, it was obvious on his face, but he couldn't. Soon the sound of his groaning spread through the room, paired with that of tearing flesh as he tried to obey while the chains still bound him.

Emma had to look away as it continued on, the pain making Damon scream out as he tried to stop himself. Her only suggestion was to compel Damon to tell the truth, she wasn't here to watch him be tortured. She was just about to announce she'd wait in the other room when Klaus spoke again.

"Alright, stop. Stop. Before you hurt yourself." His words were followed by a chuckle of amusement, obviously finding some joy in what he'd just made Damon do. Emma was just happy to have it over with. They could torture both brothers as much as they wished, just let her leave the room first.

"Well, I see that he can finally be compelled. Now," Klaus, pleased by the results, stepped back towards Damon. He turned his head again, this time with minimal effort, and spoke. "Minus the stake that's in my brother, how many more stakes are out there that can kill me?"

"Eleven." Damon couldn't resist the compulsion, and so he said the truth. Judgemental eyes turned back to the Stefan, his face obviously falling in disappointment.

"So, not eight then." Klaus pointed out the obvious, the calm tone in which he spoke making him much more intimidating. When someone should be furious but acted calm, you never knew what would come next.

"You really shouldn't have lied." Rebekah scolded.

Emma took a couple of steps back, no longer standing so close to all of the vampires. While she trusted Klaus and Rebekah not to put her in danger, Emma still didn't want to take any risks if Stefan decided to do something stupid. Again.

"I'll get you the other three." The younger Salvatore however seemed much more cooperative now that the truth was out.

"Yeah, that'd be nice." Klaus spoke, his voice now lacking all the amusement it held moments before. Even if it was faked. "Or, since you lied, maybe I'll compel your brother to chew out his own tongue."

"What's wrong with you?" Stefan questioned in disbelief.

"You just killed his brother. You should be saying thank you that yours still lives, if you ask me." Emma couldn't hold back. Brother for brother seemed like more than a fair trade in her opinion. Truthfully, she was somewhat surprised Damon was still alive.

"She's right. Do you really have no appreciation for me?" Klaus' anger was now becoming more open as he glared at Stefan. "I have given you someone to hate. To loathe. A target for all your anger so you don't have to turn it on yourself. I've given your life purpose, as your friend. I mean, I really think you should be thanking me."

Klaus' final words were enough to push Stefan over the edge. Emma was happy that she'd previously stepped back as Stefan ran at Klaus, a dagger which had not been in the bag now clutched in his hand as he pressed Klaus against the wall. But before he could stab it through Klaus' chest, the original grabbed hold of Stefan's arm.

"Step down, or you both die." Klaus whispered the threat calmly. And after that he no longer had to keep a tight grip on Stefan's arm as the Salvatore relented, realizing he'd been beat. "There, now you only have to get me the other two."

"This is ridiculous." Rebekah's displeased voice broke through the tension as she suddenly stalked towards Damon. For a moment, Emma thought she might actually kill him. However, instead, Rebekah started to release Damon from his chains, making Klaus' question her actions. "I brought him here. I get to release him. My rules now." Rebekah said as Damon fell to his knees in his own blood.

After making sure Klaus wouldn't put up more of a protest, Rebekah's eyes turned to Stefan, the look in them making it clear she wasn't playing any games. "Bring us the stakes and you both live. Take your brother as a sign of good faith."

After that, Rebekah didn't wish to stick around any longer. Picking up the bag of stakes from the ground, she made her way out of the room. Her arm reached around Emma's shoulders, leading her away beside her as their business with the Salvatores finished for the rest of the night.

Stefan was left alone in a room with his brother and Klaus, and as she walked away, Emma could hear the latter making his threats as clear as possible. Emma hoped they'd have an effect. Because, even though the Mikaelson siblings had been unlinked, some of them could still die. And with their opponents starting to act as if they had nothing to lose, a good reminder that they did could serve well. Emma chose to believe it would.
