《Breathing ∞ Kol Mikaelson [1]》[35]

Emma was put on a mandatory vacation from school by her mother. Marissa wanted her daughter to have enough time to recover completely from her visit to the hospital before she returned to full normalcy. Although, thanks to the vampire blood which was used to heal her, Emma was already fully recovered. But she wasn't complaining. She welcomed any excuse to miss algebra.

However, her mother was known for her excessive worrying. Which is why, while she had to return to work after a couple of days spent at home with her daughter, Marissa didn't feel comfortable leaving Emma alone at home. Especially considering Rebekah's presence at the time of Emma's embolism was completely accidental and unplanned. She didn't want any possible complications to arise while no one was with Emma.

And so, Emma found herself here, lounging in an armchair within the Mikaelson mansion as she watched the witch in front of her flip through the pages of a grimoire a few feet away. By her mother's, very surprising request, while she wasn't home, Emma wasn't alone. Which, in the end, meant she was spending her day in the vast home of the Originals. Her presence, however, didn't deter the two from the tasks they'd planned for the day.

Emma still had to hold back a laugh when she remembered the speed at which Rebekah pulled out of her driveway and away from her mother's earshot once Damon started to bang around inside the trunk of her car. However, while she didn't even try and stop Rebekah from giving Damon a piece of her mind for what he'd done to her, she wasn't too eager to be present for it either. Which was why she found herself in a separate room, acting as Klaus' little helper for the day as she made sure the previously mentioned witch didn't do anything rash.

"Tick-tock. I should hear chanting by now." Her job wasn't too long, but the awkward silence as Bonnie Bennett continued to glare at Emma is distaste made it seem longer than it should have. Luckily, Klaus returned, impatient as always.

"I'm still studying the unlinking spell. It's not that easy, especially under duress." Bonnie snapped back at him, but the slight shake to her voice made it seem she wasn't as fearless as she tried to make herself out to be.

"You've been warned. If you're looking for a way to send for help, I will kill anyone who comes to your rescue." Klaus threatened as he leaned over Bonnie's shoulder, his hands resting on the back of the armchair she was sitting in.

For a moment, Emma debated pointing out that if Elena was the one to come, he couldn't kill her. Not if he wanted to create more hybrids. But she chose not to, and simply remained silent as she flipped through another grimoire, one that Bonnie didn't need at this time.

"This is the spell. I just don't know if I'm strong enough." Bonnie stated, standing from her seat and moving further away from Klaus, obviously uncomfortable with him leaning over her like that.

"Then you should have a little more faith in yourself, Bonnie." Klaus said. Emma couldn't help but think that were she unaware of the backstory behind the scene unfolding, Klaus would actually be sounding like a nice and supportive person. "Your energy helped my mother link us. Honestly, I think someone isn't trying very hard."

Klaus' words made Bonnie send him a glare that would make some very happy that looks couldn't kill. However, Klaus wasn't rattled by it. "Very well." Instead, he simply reached into his pocket to pull out his phone.

"Something tells me that's not going to be a good call. For you, I mean." Emma commented absent-mindedly. She of course knew what would be coming. While not completely clued in on Klaus' plan, Bonnie's resistance made the next step very clear. Put someone in danger.

"Kol." Now that had Emma's head snapping up from the grimoire in her hands and her head turning towards the Hybrid as he spoke. "How's the weather up there in Mile High City? And how's our friend? May I see him?" Klaus' questioned his brother, sending a smirk Bonnie's way as he spoke.

Emma couldn't hear whatever Kol was saying on the other end of the line, however, as Klaus moved over to stand beside Bonnie so she could look at whatever he had to show her on his phone, Emma got her answers soon enough about what Klaus meant by all that. "There's Jeremy. Playing fetch with his new puppy. Isn't that just the most adorable thing you've ever seen?"

"So that's the business in Denver. Makes sense." Emma muttered to herself. She knew Elena had orchestrated sending Jeremy away for his own safety. But she'd never bothered digging about where she'd sent him. Klaus obviously managed it all on his own, and taken measures once he found out. Smart.

"Thank you, Kol. We'll be in touch." The Mikaelson put the phone back up to his ear as he stepped away from Bonnie. He was about to hang up on the call, however, whatever Kol was saying on the other end of the line, kept him occupied for a couple of seconds longer before he pulled the phone away from his ear. Klaus turned to Emma, the hand which held the phone extending towards her as he spoke. "Make it quick."

Emma didn't say anything as she took the phone from Klaus' hands, somewhat surprised, but still bringing it up to her ear as she made her way out of the room. She knew that if either one of the vampires within the house decided to listen in on the conversation, there wasn't much she could do about it, but at least this way she had some semblance of privacy as she answered the call.

"If it isn't the lovely birthday girl. I wanted to see if you liked your gift." The familiar accented voice spoke on the other end of the line, and Emma didn't even notice the smile which spread over her face as she heard it.

"It's lovely, thank you." She said as she glanced down at the bracelet which was now clasped around her wrist. After its origin no longer brought her concern or worry, Emma had started wearing the bracelet happily. "But I must say, I was surprised to get it." She added on soon after.

"Why is that?" Kol asked in a confused tone.

"You don't seem like the type." Emma, of course, didn't hold back on her honestly. She truly wasn't expecting Kol to bother establishing any kind of contact, much less send her birthday gifts after their night together.

"Now, see, that's the problem with judging someone based on stories, darling." He pretended to scold her, making Emma laugh in amusement. She had to admit, her assumption was based on exactly that, stories.

"If you say so." She gave in, however, the disbelief still somewhat seeped into her voice. Not all stories could be exaggeration or lie.

"I might have to keep surprising you until you believe me." Kol was more than willing to accept the challenge she had indirectly set before him. It made a small smirk appear on Emma's face as she thought of it.

"And how do you plan on doing that?" Emma asked in a teasing voice, leaning back against a wooden desk as she held the phone close to her ear. She suspected that if any of Kol's siblings were listening in on the conversation, they would be stopping right about now.

"Something tells me my business here in Denver will be over soon. We can properly celebrate your birthday once I'm back... Just us." Kol suggested, and Emma could just imagine the smirk that was most certainly spreading over his lips as he spoke. One could be seen on her own.

"Now that sounds like it could be fun." She said, more than open to the idea. She most certainly wouldn't mind having a repeat of the last time they spent time together, just them.

"I'll see you soon then, darling." Kol said happily, sounding pleased with himself. Emma couldn't hold back a small laugh at that.

"Goodbye, Kol." She responded, bringing their conversation to an end as she hung up the phone call. For a moment, she glanced down at the number displayed beneath his contact name in Klaus' phone, memorizing it in case she found need for it in the future.

Once she returned back to the room with Klaus and Bonnie, Emma handed Klaus his phone back. And the look he gave her in response didn't go unnoticed either. It made Emma shrug her shoulders innocently as she spoke. "It's your own fault for listening in."
