《Breathing ∞ Kol Mikaelson [1]》[13]

Emma couldn't believe what she was doing. If someone told her a couple of days ago, she'd be doing it, she probably would have suggested they get themselves checked into a mental asylum. But none the less, here she was, handing someone a freaking blood bag so they could eat. She did her best to keep the disgusted look of her face as she watched Tony stick a straw into the bag and drink from it for a moment before he turned to her.
"You know, you're either the dumbest person on the planet or the bravest." He commented after chuckling at her failed attempt at hiding the aversion she felt as she watched him drink from the blood bag.
"I'd say I'm a bit of both." Emma said honestly, moving over to sit on the bench next to him. Some of the hybrids were working on removing the party items from the back yard in front of them.
"Well, whatever you are, thanks for helping out. I don't think Mikael would have been very eager to let the rest of us walk along free if he succeeded tonight." Tony said with a wide smile on his face. The way Mikael spoke about the hybrids, calling them abominations of all things, made Emma suspect Tony was right in his assumption.
"When you think about it, I just threw a wooden stick." Emma pointed out. She was pretty sure that if she knew Stefan was coming, she'd have stayed hidden. After all, there was really no need for her help. But in that moment, Emma didn't know that. Damon was about to kill Klaus, that was all that mattered.
"Don't sell yourself short, love. It was a good throw." A third voice joined their conversation, making both Emma and Tony spin around in surprise to find Klaus standing behind them. She wasn't sure how long he'd been there, but in the end, it didn't really matter. Wherever he was he could have been listening in on their conversation. "Tony, go help Mindy clean up the blood." Klaus demanded; his voice somewhat cold as he fixed Tony with a pointed glare. The hybrid didn't protest, sending one last smile to Emma as he stood to his feet and left to go inside of the house.
"You shouldn't be too hard on them. They were compelled, it wasn't in their control." Emma pointed out as Klaus replaced Tony in the spot next to her. He raised an eyebrow at her words, making Emma raise her hands in a sign of surrender. "But hey, they're your hybrids. I'm just giving my two cents."
"Nobody asked for them." Klaus pointed out, making Emma send him a small glare.
"Well if you don't want to hear my opinion, what do you want Klaus? Why am I even still here?" Emma questioned. After everything ended, she herself suggested she should just go home. But Klaus' only reply to that was 'Not yet.' She never got any explanation as to why not.
"I never got a chance to ask my last question." Klaus pointed out. For a moment, Emma's brows furrowed in confusion, unable to understand what he was saying. At least until she remembered their game of beer pong before everything went to hell.

"Alright then, a deal is a deal. What is your question, Klaus?" Emma questioned with a raised eyebrow. She knew better than to say she wouldn't answer it. Especially not after she seems to have made a step in the right direction to make him less suspicious of her.
"Why is it that you're the only person in this town who isn't on the side of Elena and her friends?" That was the ultimate question Klaus had intended to ask during their game. Because it was true. Emma was the only one who wasn't instantly against the Mikaelson family, and while he knew of her friendship with Rebekah, something told him there had to be more to it. "And please, do go into detail."
"If you insist." Emma gave in. Luckily for her it wasn't a question she had any issue answering. Readjusting in her seat so she could fully turn to him as she replied, Emma started to list off. "I don't like Elena and being on their side means being a part of the Elena Gilbert protection squad. And while I don't dislike her enough to want her dead, I also don't really feel like giving my life for her."
Klaus chuckled in amusement at the way Emma spoke, but didn't say anything as he let her continue. "Which is a risk. Not because you're a murderous psychopath. I mean, that is part of the reason, but not all of it. Just look at tonight. Rebekah, who I suspect was somehow involved, is now gone. Disappeared because they did who knows what to her. They threw Matt to the wolves by not even giving him all of the information. Tyler had to drag Caroline out of here even though she knew nothing about it, which put her in more danger than if she was informed. And Stefan just switched sides and backstabbed them all. You never know where you really stand with them."
Klaus opened his mouth to point out he wasn't some human protector. She may be his sister's friend, but human friends come and go. He didn't have much care for that despite how much Rebekah might not like it. However, before Klaus could speak, Emma cut him off as she continued.
"With you I know where I stand. Nowhere. You take care of yourself, you watch out for your own interest, and I'll probably never know what your real plan is. With you, I protect myself. I'm not putting blind faith into you having my back. But also, I know you don't trust me enough to include me in your plans, so I'm not really getting dragged into whatever the next battle is." Emma spoke and Klaus couldn't help but be intrigued. Never before did he have people align with him because they knew he wouldn't care about what happens to them or trust them. This was new.
"And after tonight, they know I'm on your side. But just like me, they know I'm just a measly human, I can't actually do anything to them, they'll be more focused on defeating you instead of paying attention to me, which might make me useful. In conclusion, I'm not team Elena and Company because I prefer awareness over a faux sense of safety. Add to that that Rebekah is my friend, and despite it all, you're the best way to get her back. Well, I'd just say I'm good at making smart decisions." Emma concluded.

For a moment silence spread over them as Klaus thought over her words. And he couldn't help but admire the reasons behind Emma's decision. She got roped into a world where she doesn't truly belong, and she was making the best of it. While her words didn't make him believe he had her unwavering loyalty, Klaus couldn't help but admit that she was being smart, nonetheless. And he couldn't help but admire the honesty. She didn't give him some grand story about wanting to serve him as many others tried to before.
"Is that good enough, your majesty?" And then she could go and be foolish enough to keep teasing him. But since she'd helped him earlier in the night, Klaus thought perhaps he shouldn't snap her neck right away.
"For now." He said simply, not revealing any of his true thoughts on the matter. Emma rolled her eyes at the cryptic reply, but didn't pry any further, choosing to be happy that in that moment what she said was enough.
"So what happens now?" She asked curiously, her eyes sending him a questioning look as she waited for his reply.
"Now, I reunite my family." Klaus said, a small smile coming over his face as he thought of the next step in his plan.
"I was asking more along the lines of 'Can I go home' but do elaborate." Emma pointed out, making Klaus chuckle in amusement.
"My father hunted us for centuries. He was relentless in his pursuit." Klaus admitted. Were the situation any different, he would shield the secret of his father from anyone. But Mikael was dead, and the threat was gone. It could never be used against him again. "Now that he is dead, we can be free. Free to go wherever we want and do whatever we please." He shared.
"And Rebekah?" Emma couldn't help but ask. While she knew Klaus knew where the rest of his siblings were, Rebekah wasn't with them. She was wherever Elena and the Salvatores had hidden her.
"I'll get my sister back, don't you worry, love. And then you two can have your slumber parties and talk about boys to your heart's content." Klaus said with a smirk. Emma rolled her eyes at him in slight annoyance before rising to her feet.
"Well, until then I suppose I'm forced to do that on my own. If you don't need me anymore, Klaus, I do think it's time for me to head home." Emma said openly, seeing no more reason why he'd make her stay. And he didn't either.
"Until next time, Emma."
"Mom! I'm home!" Emma called out as she walked through the door of her house, making sure that the first thing she did after locking the door was kick off her heels. Completely discarded in the corner, hopefully never to be worn again, Emma left them behind as she walked through the hall and towards the living room barefoot.
"How was the dance? Did you have fun?" Marissa turned to her daughter with a wide smile once Emma sat down on the couch next to her. The mother was curious to hear every possible detail as she muted the TV, a rerun of Judge Judy fading out into the background.
"It was interesting... And eventful." Emma said vaguely. Something told her telling her mother everything about the dance might result in being locked up in the house for all eternity.
"Did you make any more friends?" Marissa asked curiously, sending her daughter a pointed look. Whenever Emma attended such things, especially in the beginning of their time in a new place, she'd share every detail with her mother. Marissa didn't like this new vagueness. However, she didn't really suspect there to be much of a big secretive reason behind it.
"I wouldn't really call them friends. But it's good to know them." Emma said honestly. Would she say who or why it was good to know them? Hell, no.
"Don't tell me that's all I get to know?" Marissa demanded.
"Sorry mom, I'm just tired. Rebekah can be hard to keep up with during social gatherings." Emma truly lied this time. She was tired, yes, but not because Rebekah kept dragging her around. But of course, her mother didn't know that.
"Well, alright then. Go get some sleep sweetie. Don't forget your meds." Marissa kissed Emma's forehead gently before releasing her to get up and go to bed. Emma wished her mother a good night before starting to head back out into the hall. However, before she could fully leave the room, her mother called out to her again. "Everything is alright, sweetie, right? There's nothing going on? Nothing bad happened at the dance?"
For a moment, both women were quiet. Marissa couldn't help herself but ask the question. Knowing where they moved to, she couldn't help but want to make sure Emma was safe. And somehow, Emma could see that. She could see that her mother wasn't just asking about simple teenage drama. She wanted to know if something more was happening. And so she lied again.
"Everything's great, mom. I'll give you all the details tomorrow, I promise. Good night."
While she still had a thousand questions on her mind, some things were becoming abundantly clear to Emma. One of those things was that her mother was aware of the supernatural life hiding in the shadows of Mystic Falls. However, until she knew what her mother's opinion on it all was, and why she'd moved them here if she knew in the first place, Emma thought it best not to let her mother know she was already wrapped up in all of it. Not yet.

To Blunt The Sharpest Claw
The Velvet Paw of Asquith Novels are a series of New Fable genre novels that involve cats and dogs and high adventure and romance and espionage and food-fights and hotels and explosions and car chases. With large casts, exotic locations and an absurdity only possible in the absence of human characters, the Velvet Paw of Asquith Novels blend Wind in the Willows with James Bond, though with more cafes and fewer badgers. This submission is the third title in its Morigan Trilogy, beginning two-thirds of the way through the series' longest adventure yet. Here's a quick recount of what's happened so far: When Oscar Teabag-Dooven, a Velvet Paw of Asquith, is ordered to investigate how a mysterious poet, the Ar'dath-Irr, is able to travel instantaneously around the world, two very bad things happen. Firstly, he meets Lydia, an insane librarian who punches everyone in the face, and secondly, the Ar'dath-Irr reveals he is intent on taking over the world. Although this second thing might be considered worse than the first, Oscar feels differently following Lydia’s destruction of a cafe, a library and his face in one afternoon. In comparison, thwarting world domination just seems easier. Along with Binklemitre, a fellow Velvet Paw of Asquith, and Lydia, Oscar infiltrates the Ar’dath-Irr’s realm of dark poetry to discover the dog not only intends wrenching the world apart but has no intention of cleaning up afterwards. As a result, Oscar decides it’s all too hard and goes home to have a bath. After lots of arguing and the sort of food fight that posh restaurants were invented for, Lydia and Binklemitre convince him that they must stop the Ar’dath-Irr for several reasons, one of them quite serious. A vibrant cast of characters collide as Oscar, Lydia and Binklemitre battle the Ar’dath-Irr and his disciples in an adventure involving exploding cafés and appalling hotels, car chases and inadvertent surgery, dreadful poetry, lots of arguments and at least one temper-tantrum, all of which draw the three into dark and convoluted corners of a world they weren’t aware existed. Moreover, any chance of sitting down and discussing things over some buns disappears when Lydia punches the Ar’dath-Irr in the face. This results in her having a psychotic episode and Oscar getting run over by an ambulance. Although Binklemitre suffers neither, he witnesses both, which is almost as dreadful, though not nearly so messy. An enormous battle ensues, followed by a dinner party and then everything explodes.
