《Breathing ∞ Kol Mikaelson [1]》[2]

Emma sorted through the books in her new locker, more than happy that the first day of school was finally over. Some students still stuck around the halls, discussing and debating whether to join activities and groups. Unlike them, Emma couldn't wait to get what she needed to do her homework and get home. The idea of curling up on the couch with a bucket of ice cream and just relaxing seemed perfect right now. However, fate seemed to have a different plan for her.

"Holy shit!" Emma gasped, letting out a small cough in surprise before she calmed down and let her eyes send a questioning look to the blonde that had been standing behind the door of her locker for who knows how long. "You scared the living daylights out of me."

"I can see that. Sorry..." The voice, laced with a thick accent, sounded almost uncertain in the apology, as if she were saying it simply because she thought she should. Although, the amused smile on the blonde's face made it clear enough that she was more entertained than apologetic.

"So, why are you here exactly? Is there something I can do for you, Rebekah?" Emma asked curiously, remembering very well the way Rebekah brushed her off that morning. The brunette surely wasn't expecting Rebekah to be seeking her out any time soon.

"Well, I was a bit harsh this morning." Rebekah started to say, making Emma raise an eyebrow at her. A bit was one way to go. "It was uncalled for. I hope you can forgive me." Rebekah did her best at apologizing. After compelling the woman at the administration office, she soon learned that Emma was actually a new girl, with no ties to Mystic Falls and who was just being nice. And if Rebekah had to stay in this hellhole of a town, at least it would be nice to have a friend.

"It's alright. You're not the first person to shoot me down, I'll live." Emma replied, shutting her locker closed and leaning her shoulder against it as she continued to speak with Rebekah. "I just thought it would be, I don't know, easy? For us to be friends I mean."

"It would, because I desperately need someone's advice." Rebekah said, standing up straighter while Emma's brows furrowed curiously. What could she need her advice on? "Cheerleading, yes or no?" Rebekah asked suddenly, a flyer basically appearing in front of Emma with the date and time of tryouts for the team.

"Uh... Yes?" Emma answered, although her voice sounded more like a question since she wasn't sure why Rebekah was asking in the first place. The lack of information made her unsure whether she'd given the right answer.

"Good, then you can do it with me." Rebekah smiled widely, but Emma's eyes widened in surprise as the blonde linked their arms and started to lead the way towards the exit.

"Oh no, no, no. Cheerleading is not my thing. Really, physical activity is not my thing. I just thought you were asking for yourself." She quickly explained, brushing away a few stray stands of hair that had fallen into her face as she kept up with an excited Rebekah.

"Really? It's your senior year, don't you want to make a splash, get yourself out there?" Rebekah questioned with a suspicious tone, believing everyone would want to make an impression in a new school and quickly make new friends.

"I'm not the out there type of person. I'm the type of person who is thankful that you've taken the spotlight of being the new kid off of me." Emma explained with a small chuckle before adding. "I'm also not the exercise type, as I said."

It was becoming quite obvious that she and Rebekah were different people when it came to handling attention from others. Rebekah's confidence made her seem as if she didn't care whether she had it or not but enjoyed when she did. The attention. Emma on the other hand, preferred to stick to the shadows. This year especially. She didn't have plans to make friends with a lot of people only to lose touch nine months later when they all leave for college.

"Well, alright then. The very least you can do in that case is come and cheer me on." Rebekah said, and while Emma didn't plan on saying no, something in Rebekah's voice made her assume that even if she wanted to the blonde wouldn't have accepted it. "After all, us new girls should stick together, right?"

"Lead the way Miss Pom-Poms." Emma said with a small laugh, finally allowing the girl to lead her out of the school and towards the football field without small little stops of resistance. Waking across the track and towards the grass, Emma was ready to stop and let the runners pass, but Rebekah continued on, making the brunette shake her head in amusement.

She could see the football team running up and down the field, some passing balls around while others were completely focused on whatever it was that the coach was telling them. On the side of the field, stood a group of girls, and as Rebekah headed in their direction, it quickly became clear this was the cheerleading team. As if the splits and stretching didn't make it obvious enough already.

"I'm going to sit on the bleachers over there." Emma said, letting go of Rebekah and starting to make her way over to the stands. However, she made sure to add one more thing. "Break a leg... or whatever the cheerleader lingo for good luck is."

"Oh, don't worry. I don't need luck." Rebekah's confident reply made Emma laugh in amusement as she turned around and made her way to a seat at the bottom of the bleachers. Some other students had come out to watch the practices or their friends trying out, but she paid no mind to them. Instead, she pulled out a small notebook, continuing on with the writing she'd done in some of the classes when she was bored.

Every so often, her eyes glanced over to the edge of the field where Rebekah stood with the cheerleaders. It didn't take long for her to spot the blonde, standing beside another girl whose golden hair shimmered in the light. They seemed to be having a conversation, but even from a distance, the tension could be seen as the two continued to glance towards the football players.

Emma didn't know the girl, or her name, but she could remember seeing her in some of the classes they shared and around the halls throughout the day. The way she behaved made Emma assume the blonde was a popular girl, and the way she stood in front of all of the cheerleaders, the head of the team as well. Knowing Rebekah, the conversation happening right then and there was probably some kind of power struggle.

And of course, it ended with flair on Rebekah's side as she performed a set of cartwheels with minimal effort. The cheerleaders around her clapped happily, along with some of the people that had been watching from the sides, Emma included. Rebekah winked in the direction of her new friend, as if silently saying 'See? I don't need luck', but was soon pulled into a conversation with some of the girls that surrounded her.

Happy that the blonde seemed to be getting what she wanted, Emma was about to get back to her writing, but instead, her eyes met a pair of green ones observing her curiously. The blonde that had been talking to Rebekah now watched Emma with analytical eyes, however, Emma paid it no mind and refocused on her work once more.

Cheerleading practice didn't last too long. Apparently there was some back-to-school event later that night, and of course, all of the girls wanted their time to get ready for it and look their best. Rebekah walked over to the bleachers, this time Emma saw her coming and therefore wasn't startled by her sudden appearance beside her.

"So, tell me, was your goal today to get on the squad or to get under Barbie's skin?" Emma asked curiously, her eyes watching the blonde girl from before walk past them. She seemed to lack subtlety as she tried to look over at them without getting caught, but once more met Emma's eye.

"Couldn't it have been both?" Rebekah asked, her voice completely innocent as if she had done nothing wrong. Emma couldn't help but laugh. Being reserved as she was, Emma herself would never to some of the things Rebekah did, but she couldn't help but find the blonde girl fun and amusing Her confidence was refreshing and made her stand out, Emma liked that about her.

"I take it you're also going to this party tonight?" Emma asked curiously. It seemed like the type of event Rebekah would go to, and Emma was actually debating it herself. It wasn't really her scene, but seeing Rebekah and the way she was fitting in made her think that perhaps, while she wasn't really looking to make best friends forever, she didn't want to be a social pariah either.

"Aren't you?" Rebekah asked with a disapproving look, but soon turned to trying to convince Emma she should come. "Come on, I don't usually get to go to these types of things. If I'm in high school, I want the full experience. And part of the experience is going to parties with friends from what I understand?" Rebekah raised an eyebrow at Emma, however, the Park girl found herself focused on Rebekah's choice of words.

"What do you mean 'you don't usually get to do these types of things'?" Emma asked curiously, but Rebekah dismissively shook her head as soon as the question came out.

"Oh, never mind that. So, will you come with me? Please?" Rebekah asked, and something about the way she did so, it made Emma give in without much protest.

"Alright, alright, I have to ask my mum, but I don't see why I couldn't." Emma answered as the two of them finally started to walk away from the field. Instead of heading back into the school, they rounded the building, heading towards the parking lot.

"If you need help convincing her, I'm great at making people say 'Yes'." Rebekah stated, grabbing the phone which was sticking out of Emma's back pocket. "Password?" She demanded, and Emma laughed as she shook her head at the blonde.

"3110." She said openly, and found Rebekah giving her an odd look. "Don't ask." Emma added quickly after, shaking her head. She knew that the password made it seem like she was a Halloween fanatic. She wasn't.

"There you go." Rebekah said after a couple of moments passed in silence while she typed away before handing Emma her phone back just as they came to stand beside her car. Looking down, Emma could see that Rebekah had saved her number in the phone. "I'll see you later."
