《The Girl With The Cellphone》Chapter 5

Summer is here. Jeez, it's way too hot. I sit at my usual spot at the usual park. I hide myself from the sun with the tree's shadow. I don't know why I decide to stay out by that heat. And especially when someone else is there. I'm more pissed off than ever. He's way to clingy those days.
"It's so hot!" Then go home! "Why do you stay here by that heat? It's unbearable!" Go home already! "Don't you want to go to a café? Or some place with air conditioner? It'll be better!" Stop complaining and leave for god's sake!
"Say, Shorty."
"My name is Saito Kenshi! I already told you a million time!"
"Why don't you go home? We're not friends as long as I know."
"You still don't consider me as your friend?" He pouts like always.
"No. Why would I be friends with people I despise? I already tolerate you so don't take too much advantage of that."
He stays silent for some time. I continue reading my book, feeling smooth by the smell around me. But this peaceful doesn't last long. It never with him. "Say, do I bother you that much?" He looks at the sky while talking to me again. He looks quite serious.
"Yes, you do," I answer honestly. He gulps. I'm sure he wasn't expecting something as direct as that. He puts his head on his knees, hiding it from me. He is hesitant to speak again. He's quite childish sometimes isn't he? I sigh as usual. I should count how many times a day I sigh because of him. "But if I have to be honest, you don't seem like a bad person like most of the others," he raises his head, looking surprise. "I face a lot of bad people all day long so I know what I'm talking about. I still don't like you but I guess you're okay."
He smiles. Does that makes him happy? It wasn't really a compliment. He puts his head in his knees again. He wraps his legs with his arms and doesn't make anymore noises. I let a 'what a child' before turning my attention back to my book. He mumbles in his knees to protest. How stupid. Well, at least, he makes me smile a little. It's not something I do often. It might not be that bad actually, to be with him.
The day after at school, he comes to me at our break. He says he has something really important to ask me. Well, I guess I can listen to him once in a while. I wait for him to speak.
"Actually, I want us to trade numbers!"
"What?"
I look at him dumbfounded. My classmates too actually. Everyone stares at him and me too. When he notices all the eyes on him, he starts to lose confidence. I throw him a dark look before answering with a clear 'no'. He whines in disappointment.
"Why?"
"Because I don't want to."
"Waah, you're courageous, Kenshi," says a black-haired man who wraps his arm around Shorty's shoulders. "Can I ask for yours too then?" I don't answer, I just glare at him the same way I did with Shorty. He shivers at that cold look.

"Taka! There's no way she'll give you her number!"
"Neither she will with you."
He freezes a little, not denying. "B-but she's my friend at least!"
"Is she?" He looks at me for confirmation and I shake my head as a way to reply him. Shorty looks at me with sad eyes.
"Do you really want to trade numbers with a pro hacker? For real?" I finally say. They both stare at me for a moment before the more stupid of them nods his head.
"Of course I want yours! But if I had to admit, I want your number because I have struggle with my revision for the exam!" Of course there has to be reason behind it. I'm starting to understand him by now. "And I heard you always have the top scores! So please teach me!"
"So, you're quite smart, ain't you Miss?" I don't feel like replying him.
Lately, too many people talk to me. And it's all his fault. Despite being with me, people started to accept it and stop bothering him. I've never done a thing to him. He never gives me the reason to. Expect for my cold attitude, I was never really mean to him so people start being more relax around me too. Maybe the fact that I didn't found anyone to expose helps a little. Good bye my peaceful school life...
"By the way, Suzuki-san," start the guy next to Shorty. "Did you injure yourself?"
"Oh that," I bring my wounded hand on my wounded cheek. "Stupid men I guess you can say."
"Somebody attacked you?!" shouts a girl with pink hair who talks to me regularly now. I nod to answer.
"They were assaulting a woman so I stepped in."
"You should be more careful Suzu-chan!" 'Suzu-chan'...? Oh well... "You're a girl after all! In front of men..."
I cut her. "Because I'm a girl doesn't mean I can't face men and destroy their life," I say it coldly. It brings shiver down the spine of the three of them.
"Suzu-chaan~ You're so cold!" Say the girl. What is her name already? Is it Mori? Or Morukami? I think it's Mori...
"Mori-san," I call out. She looks at me with a pout. It wasn't that? I'm so bad with names...
"Don't be so formal with me! We're friends~!"
"Are we?" She looks pained. Tears are coming up. Oh dear. What a pain. Think of something... What are you supposed to do in those situation? "Well... You can consider me as your friend but I don't want to have any. I don't mind as long as it's you but the other two..." I glare at the two guys and they look away, ignoring my stare. I click my tongue.
I take my lunch box and leave the class. Shorty and the others hurry to follow me. As I continue walking, ignoring them protest behind me, I pass a group of guy and hear their conversation. They talk about the sexiest girl at school. Common things for high schooler I guess. However, I heard about that group from Mori. They abuse people. They befriend them then use their money. There are many rich people here so it's not uncommon to find any. Heard that boy -Yamada, was it?- was one of their victim and finished by leaving school. Oh, did I ever mention that this school has a bad reputation? No? Well, now you know. It's not because of me, but because of people like them: people abuser for short. Personally, I fight those people. It's just that not many people like my methods. Mori for example, admires me for some weird reasons but, she was too afraid to talk to me. She is really shy and I am not really approachable so I understand why she hesitated. Then, what's his name...? Fujita Takahiro. He starts hanging up because he's curious about my hacking skill. And for Shorty... I don't know. He's just weird. But back to the subject, I start to investigate on those guys. They must be up to something I'm sure. I meet them too much lately. Are they after someone in our class? Or one in the group? Surely, it's not me. They wouldn't dare. I sit on the rooftop's edge and unpack my bento. Mori sits next to me doing the same as me. The boys went to the cafeteria to grab something before joining us.

Mori looks at my food with interest. I bring my bento near her so she can grab something from it. I'm surprisingly nice nowadays but Mori is a cute girl so it's okay. "Is it okay?" I nod to her and she takes some omelets and eats the whole thing with a big smile. "It's delicious!" She gives me an energetic nod with her eyes shining. Was it that delicious? "Do you prepare it yourself? Or is it your mom?" I wish it was her.
I shake my head. "No, it's all me," there's no need to tell my life to outsiders. Was it a mean things to say? Mmh... They do talk about them more than I do. Is it something to do when you have a conversation with others?
"Can I have some too?" asks Shorty, followed by a nodding Fujita. I glare at them. There's no way I'll give some to them. I see Shorty's pouting from the corner of my eyes but as always I ignore him. "You're so mean Suzuki!"
"Too bad for you Saito! She only likes me!" Mori sticks out her tongue at Shorty which makes him even more angry.
Fujita makes fun of him and his childish behavior. Mori soon joins him and Shorty just pouts as usual. I can understand why they make fun of him. They laugh all together while I still eat my lunch. Dear, they're so loud. It's became a habit, having them there during lunch time. I'm quite used to them by now -not that I've had any choice again. I keep complaining but they're brighten up my morose life. Haven't been around that much people in a long time -not to say never. It's quite refreshing. I might start to... No. I shouldn't.
While they are talking, I continue my research on the group of guys from earlier. The tallest guy from the two gives me a glance as I didn't say much since earlier. He notices my phone and gets near me.
While he stands next to me, he looks over my shoulder to know what I was doing. "Are you playing Suzuki?"
"I investigate," I'm concentrate on what I am doing so I only gave a short reply.
"'Investigate'?" He repeats, confused. "Ah! About some weirdos?" I don't know if 'weirdos' is the correct word but I guess. "Who's this that time? Can I look at what you're doing?" He leans more and more on me to look at my phone's screen. Suddenly, Shorty pulls him apart.
"Taka! You're too close! Leave her some space!"
"Why~? Are you jelly~?" He jokes around with him again. That's best friends for you I suppose.
"Shut up! I'm not! I just know she's uncomfortable with people, especially men," his voice went lower and lower. He's so easy to read.
"Yeah, sure. You're not jealous," chuckles Fukita.
"Who are you going to crush that time for their bad crimes Suzu-chan?"
"Aoki's group."
Mori looks worried at my answer. "Are you sure about them? They're quite scary!"
"Yeah, she's right," nods Fujita. "I heard there's someone in their group who have good hacking skills," 'hacking skills'? "Well, he's not better than you Suzuki but you should be careful."
"Does that mean that time," I wonder to myself, not noticing at first I say it out loud until Shorty makes me notice it.
"Did anything happen?"
Should I tell them? Well, let's not. It may be nothing. "No. Just thinking about something my dad says," why did I bring my dad to cover myself?
"That's right! Your dad's pretty famous, isn't he?" I nod. As much as I hate it, I can't hide that my dad has a big influence in Japan.
"He's a famous baker, right?" Asks Fujita. Yeah, one of the best. I nod, still concentrate on my device.
"I would love to eat some of his candies~" affirms Mori next to me. I understand why she says that. Despite that I hate my father, his candies are really good.
"You want me to bring some?" Their eyes sparkle. Well, now I know I'll have to take some.
Mori takes my hands with hers and stares at me with all the happiness in the world. "Would you do that? Really?" I nod and she yells with so much energy. Where does she stock all that energy..?
"Thanks Suzuki!" Smile Shorty. Do I have to bring it to him too? That'll be rude if I don't.
"Oh," I look at the information I just got from my phone. It's their next target.
They look over at my shoulder, curious about what I just found. I read it like the others and we all start to fell uneasy.
Their next target, it's me.

The Mischievous Mrs. Maxfield
***The wrong girl is sometimes The Right One.*** Charlotte Samuels thought she'd be stuck waiting tables at Marlow's until all her debts are paid off-in about ten thousand years or so. She definitely didn't expect a marriage proposal from the arrogant Brandon Maxfield who was blackmailed by his father to make her his wife if he didn't want his least favorite cousin to run Maxfield Industries. Charlotte's instinct was to say HELL NO! but she's stumped by a few obstacles: 1.) His old man Martin Maxfield is dear to her heart and has been recently deteriorating in health. 2.) She gets a million dollars if she stays married to Brandon for a year. 3.) She would rather like the opportunity to teach the attractive but awfully rude man a few lessons he didn't think he needed from a 'teenage gold-digger' which was his term of endearment for her on their first date-er, business meeting. So what's a girl got to do, right? Sure, she's young and a little rough around the edges but there's something her would-be husband didn't know about her yet-she's nothing like he ever expected. Thrust into the glitzy world a standard-issue Mrs. Maxfield would fit perfectly and rule with impeccable social grace, Charlotte will either have to force herself into the mold or break free of it, risking what little she has left for everything that she can gain.*** Copyright © 2014 by Nina Tippett.
