《Fire and Ice》Chapter 5: Nosey

Edward didn't come back until the following week. It was raining really hard the day he returned, I couldn't ride my bike in the rain cause I didn't want it to get too messed up. A part of me was thinking to take my old seat back but he stopped me.

"I'm okay now, I need to apologize to her," he told me as I sat down in my seat behind him.

I shrugged, "Sure, she was really hurt the way you acted towards her so you better fix it...also please don't kill her."

He shot me a look that was supposed to be threatening but I rolled my eyes, he didn't scare me. A few minutes later she walked in, and by the look on her face she wasn't expecting him to be back. Yet she proceeded to sit in her usual seat. I watched their interaction, it was definitely awkward.

"Hello," my brother started, "I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to introduce myself last week. I'm Edward Cullen. You're Bella?" She nodded and Mr. Molina started his onion lesson.

Working by myself was boring, I was more a people person than the rest of my siblings considering I could actually be around humans without wanting to rip them apart. Yet my blood-thirsty brother was chatting up a female while I was looking through the microscope wondering what the hell I was even supposed to be looking for.

A little while passed and I noticed Bella and Edward were already done. I huffed as I looked at my empty sheet of paper. I didn't want to interrupt their conversation but I needed to finish this work, I knew Edward could hear me but I leaned forward so I was between them.

"Hey guys, mind if I take a look?" I motioned to their paper.

Edward chuckled, "Bella you've met my sister Cate," he smiled as he handed me his sheet.

"Yeah, she's my bodyguard in gym," she smiled at me.

I smirked as I started scribbling the answers onto my paper, "Yup, that's me, the glorified guard dog," Edward sent me a warning look but I couldn't help laughing.

Once I was done copying their answers I handed back their paper and went to sit back in my chair, "You want to move your chair to sit with us?" Bella offered.

I looked at her shocked, I wasn't expecting that, "I'm okay-" I started but she shook her head.

"No really, c'mon," she insisted.

Edward and I exchanged surprised looks but I grabbed my stuff and moved so I was sitting on the other side of my brother, leaving him in the middle of us. We spend the rest of the period just chatting, getting to know Bella. When the bell rang I popped in my earbuds and put some light music on, the two of them were so invested in their conversation, I didn't want Bella to think I was eavesdropping even though Edward knew I could hear everything they were saying.

"Did you get contacts?" Bella asked him, I could feel him tense next to me.

"No."

"You're eyes were black the last time I saw you....but now they're like golden-brown...they match Cate's eyes," she noted and I popped out my earbuds as if the song ended, but it was good to know the colored contacts were working.

"It's the fluorescence," Edward lied quickly before starting to walk away.

I quickly went to follow him, "See you later Bella!" I bid, "You're gonna have your hands full with that one, she's very observant." I whispered to him.

"Seems that way doesn't it."

Leaving school I was chatting with Alice and Jasper, I noticed Edward watching Bella from across the parking lot.

"Jesus Christ you are obsessed."

I brought my attention back to Alice who wanted to go on another shopping spree, I really didn't want to so I was thankful when Rosalie volunteered to go with her. I hadn't even noticed the car until Edward sped away.

Mike's friend Tyler was driving his car out a little too quickly for the sleek road. He lost control of the car and it hydroplaned right toward Bella. Emmett held me back from running to help but no one stopped Edward, since he knew what was happening before anyone else. He zipped over and stopped the car from crushing her with his bare hands. Not a very human thing to do.

A second later was when all the humans realized what had happened and started running over. Edward was already gone but I knew she'd seen what he did. Quickly the rest of us got into our vehicles and sped off.

Rosalie and I went to the hospital, she was going to confront Edward on his stupid move that could've exposed the family, while I just wanted to make sure Bella was alright. Walking into the hospital some of the nursing staff recognized me immediately, one called Carlisle assuming I was there to see him.

"Cate, is something wrong?" He asked when he saw me at the reception desk.

I shook my head, "I'm fine, I was just coming to check on Bella...You know the whole car accident thing at school."

"Ah yes, I was just about to go see her, Chief Swan just arrived as well. Would you like to come with me?" He motioned to where the emergency rooms were and the two of us walked side by side, "I heard the Chief's daughter was here!" Carlisle greeted when he walked through the doors.

"Ah, Dr. Cullen," Charlie greeted, before looking at me, "You must be Cate."

I nodded, "Pleasure to meet you sir, even under these unfortunate circumstances," I smiled before looking at Bella, "How do you feel?" I asked hoping to see what story she was going to tell while Carlisle did a routine check.

"Good," was all she said.

Carlisle checked her eyes, "You might experience some post-traumatic stress or disorientation. But your vitals look good. No signs of any head trauma. I think you'll be just fine," he nodded knowingly.

Bella took a breath, "You know, it would've been a whole lot worse if Edward wasn't there," she said looking between me and Carlisle.

"Edward? Your boy?" Charlie asked.

"Yeah, I mean it was amazing, he got to me so fast he was no where near me."

Carlisle and I exchanged subtle looks of worry that went unnoticed by the others, "Sounds like you were very lucky," he said whilst I couldn't find anything to say to cover up this mess, Carlisle grabbed me gingerly and excused us from the room.

In the empty hallway Rosalie and Edward were waiting for us, "She's fine. Tyler's got some cuts but he'll live," I reported.

Rosalie looked furious, "You're so ignorant! Why would you do that?" She hissed, "Fifteen! That's how many kids saw you leave that accident without a scratch!"

"What was I supposed to do? Let her die?" He retorted.

"This isn't about you! This is about all of us."

I sighed, "Edward I know it sucks but you need to be more careful. You can't just-" I paused and the four of us turned to where we felt someone watching us. Of course it was Bella. Wrong place, wrong time, again.

"We should go talk about this in my office," Carlisle whispered.

Bella took a few more steps forward knowing she'd been caught, "Can I talk to you for a minute?" She asked, her question directed toward her savior.

I sighed and grabbed my sister's arm taking her away, she left with me but not before sending a dirty look Bella's way. I hissed to him with my thoughts as we walked away to let them talk in private.

"Tell her you were standing right next to her or something. I don't care what lie you tell her but you better fix this."

Rose, Carlisle and I sat in his office silently. What could we say? We couldn't control him, he has to make his own decisions, make his own mistakes. But at what cost? He could expose the family, and me. He should know better.

I sat in a chair and put my head in my hands, "This is stressing me out, and these are itchy" I pulled out my contacts and threw them in the trash, "This is gonna change things isn't it?" I asked.

Carlisle sighed, "Let's just hope it doesn't change for the worse."

That night Edward came into my room, "Cover for me," he whispered so none of the others could hear him.

I looked at him confused rubbing my eyes sleepily, "W-what?"

"If anyone asks just say I went hunting."

"But Alice will-"

His voice was impatient, "Yeah Alice will know, but she'll also know not to say anything so just cover for me."

I realized what he was doing, "You're going to see her aren't you?" He nodded, and I sighed, I knew nothing I said or thought would make him change his mind, "Just be careful...You do realize you're watching her while she sleeps, that's kinda creepy." I added and he chuckled.

"This is why you're my favorite sibling," then he ran out of my room.

I sat in my bed rubbing my face. I knew I was gonna have trouble falling back asleep, "Damn vampires," I muttered trying to curl back into a ball and go back to sleep.

~

I was just glad Alice and Jasper were going on that biology trip too. Mr. Molina brought his other class, which was great cause a part of me wanted to put some distance between me and Bella. If she was as observant as she seemed, I didn't want her getting any closer to figuring out what I was.

"You're so dramatic," Edward chuckled while we waited to get on the bus.

I gasped, "ME?" I lowered my voice so only the four of us could hear, "I'm not the one going to a human's house in the middle of the night and watching her sleep-"

Edward stopped me chuckling, "He's asking her to prom."

I froze and held in a laugh as I focused on Mike practically shivering like a puppy while he talked to Bella. She couldn't be less interested in his words, she was staring right at us before her attention snapped back to him. It was funny.

I looked over at Alice, "Is she-?"

"No, she's not riding in our bus on the way to the greenhouse," she responded quickly I nodded slightly relieved as we started boarding the bus.

When we got there my nose was punched with a bunch of different smells, some were nice but others were rancid. I held myself back from gagging at the smell of the rotting plants that were being used for composting. Alice grabbed my arm and we walked over to the nicer smelling plants.

"Worst field trip ever," I muttered.

Jasper snickered playfully, "You'd think being a dog half the time you'd stand being around a lot of plant life."

I gave him a look, "I'm fine around real wildlife. What man does to it, taints the smell."

The three of us did a round trip before waiting outside for the others to finish, I heard Edward keeping conversation with Bella and couldn't help but roll my eyes, he wasn't even trying to stay away from her at this point.

At least that's what I thought until I heard him say they shouldn't be friends. I was starting to feel a bit better and nodded in their direction, Alice understood we needed to diffuse the tension so we went and butted in.

"Hi!" She smiled kindly at Bella while simultaneously giving Edward a warning look, "Are you going to be riding with us?"

"No our bus is full," he answered for her before banging on the door so the driver could open it for him.

I whispered a small, "Sorry Bella," knowing she'd be able to hear it before following my siblings. I felt bad, she wasn't a bad person, but we can't have her getting mixed up in our lives. It would be dangerous for her. Any one of us could hurt her, including me. If I were to get really mad I could phase in front of her, I can't expose myself like that, and I don't want to accidentally hurt Bella if we got into an argument.

That's one of the many things that make me just as dangerous as my siblings. Someone could say the wrong thing at the wrong time to me and I could just explode...literally. One time I heard Emmett talking about how vampire trumps werewolf every time. I didn't even get to contribute to the conversation because I felt the familiar shiver rippling through my body as I got mad. I'd barely made it outside before I phased. It's hard keeping my temper under control, but Jasper's been helpful, especially at school.
