《Fire and Ice》Chapter 2: Seven Vampires, One Werewolf- What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

I ran pretty quickly from the Denali house to the end of the Canadian boarder into Seattle. Once I'd made it back into America I phased back into human form and put on some of the clothes I'd brought with me. Being over a hundred degrees in the northwest meant I wasn't gonna be wearing long sleeves or a jacket. It was annoying and would just get in the way. Instead I had on a simple white tank that contrasted nicely with my olive-toned skin. Even though I grew up in the north it looked like I was always in the sun, even though my brothers used to tease me all the time for being the "palest" of the pack.

Eleazar gave me directions to Carlisle's place. They'd offered to come with me but I politely refused, I needed to go alone so I could process that I was actually going to another house full of vampires for who knows how long. By the time I'd actually made it into Forks I'd gotten more nervous. Not that they were vampires, I knew if they were close with the Denalis then I'd be alright. I was more worried that the "kids" were going to be hostile toward me.

I knew our kind were natural enemies but my tribe always seemed to have good relationships with vampires...good ones at least. There have been legends of the first of our tribe eliminating a vampire but dying in the process due to being bitten, that's why ever since then the wolves in our tribe always fought to kill and avoided being bitten. There were other stories of brethren dying from being bitten, so we believed our tribe was, in a way, "allergic" to vampire bites, they were like poison, toxic. We assumed it was like that for all of us, no one wanted to test the theory out.

At first glance, Forks looked like one of those small towns where everyone knew everyone and their business. I followed the main road trying to avoid eye contact with any of the curious humans who saw me passing by, I wished I'd brought my sunglasses from home, having to be constantly staring at the ground was annoying but I had to hide the abnormality in my eyes.

I continued to follow the road until I caught the vampire scent. I was fairly certain it was one of them since Carmen told me they were the only clan in the area. I followed it into the forest where there were tire tracks, eventually they let to this secluded mansion-like house. There were floor to ceiling windows, and white walls. It was nice.

I was appreciating the outside architecture when I was suddenly met with all the Cullens. I couldn't tell who was who at first since I only had their names, but I picked out Carlisle and Esme quickly because they looked the oldest out of the seven.

"Welcome Cathrine, I'm sorry we had to meet under these circumstances. I'm Carlisle," he greeted.

I gave him a small grateful smile and thanked him, "Call me Cate," I asked before wondering who was who.

"I'm Edward," the tallest one answered quickly, it was almost as if he'd read my mind, "I did," he answered.

"Wait, you can..." I asked and he nodded.

Carlisle took a cautious step forward, "I know our kind might be a bit confusing to you, but come in, make yourself at home and we can introduce ourselves properly."

I felt a bit more at ease, my nerves went away and I nodded following them inside, Esme smiled at me warmly, walked by my side like a mother, and wrapping her arm around me comfortingly. I wasn't exactly used to that kind of physical interaction and vampires had a sickly-sweet scent to my kind. Definitely something I had to get used to. Yet, I didn't tell her to let go because a part of me did like and welcome it.

When we went inside I was in awe of how grand the house was on the inside, I heard Edward chuckle in front of me and figured living with a mind-reader was another thing I was going to have to get used to. The eight of us gathered in the living room and I started to take in each of their faces.

Carlisle looked like the dad of the group, his eyes, like everyone else's, matched the Denali coven's. Proving they too fed off of animals. His blonde hair was a light yellow, almost blending into his pale skin that all seven of them shared.

Esme's hair was a light brown and straight, her features just generically looked like a caring mother. A part of me already felt attached to her kind smile.

Edward's hair was a reddish-brown, he was giving me a hard stare as I analyzed his family. A part of me was hoping whatever I was thinking wouldn't offend him or anyone. He chuckled and shook his head reassuringly at me. Looking at the others I still didn't know anyone else.

Edward turned to the others, "Are you going to introduce yourselves or do you want her to guess?"

Immediately the short girl with a black pixie haircut jumped up, "I'm Alice!" She turned to the blonde guy next to her, "This is Jasper."

I looked over at the remaining two people, even though I knew who they were by process of elimination the large man with short black hair gave me a smile, "I'm Emmett and this is Rosalie," he nodded to the blonde girl on his arm.

"It's nice to meet you guys, I'm Cate," I greeted not really sure what else to say about myself.

"Why are your eyes that color?" Emmett asked bluntly.

"Emmett!" Esme scolded.

I shook my head taking no offense, "No, it's fine. Uh- my eyes turned this color the first time I'd phased into a wolf."

"And they don't change when you're human?" Edward asked curious.

I shook my head, "My whole pack was the same way, they all had bright eyes that went along with their fur-"

"So you're fur is blue?" Emmett asked like a child excited, "Will you show us?"

I laughed, feeling a bit more relaxed around him, "No, it's not blue, frankly that would be weird. It's white. My dad said it was because I'm innocent. Which is why they named me Cathrine, he thought it was innocent and pure."

The coven absorbed what I told them respectfully, "Carmen and Eleazar told us what happened to your tribe. You're welcome to stay with us as long as you like," Carlisle told me smiling.

"If I'd seen you coming I would've gotten a room all ready for you beforehand," Alice commented slightly annoyed.

I looked at her confused, "How would you have known I was coming?"

Carlisle cleared his throat, "You already witnessed Edward's talent. Having been close with our friends up in Alaska you should know that some of our kind have extra...abilities. Edward can read minds, Alice has the ability to view a tentative future depending on the decisions people make."

I felt my eyes widen with awe," You couldn't see me though?"

She shook her head disappointed, "I didn't know what was happening until Carlisle got the call. Very out of character for me."

Carlisle continued, "Jasper is also able to influence the emotions of those around him, which would explain why your anxiety went away when you first saw us," he smiled. I looked over at Jasper who tried to give me a small smile.

"Cool!" They all laughed at my reaction.

Emmett got off the couch and lunged at me throwing me playfully over his shoulder and running into the back of the house into the forest, "Ya know, once I get used to your smell, I'm gonna like having you around!" He complimented tossing me back on the ground.

I landed on my feet perfectly and chuckled, "Thanks dude, what are we doing out here though?"

"He wants to see you phase," Edward called from the back porch, the other Cullens stood next to him.

I laughed then ran behind a tree starting to take my clothes off, "What are you doing?" Emmett asked, I heard him approach.

"I'm stripping! Can't lose the small amount of clothes I have!" I called and heard him skid to a stop. Once I was butt-naked I felt the familiar shiver of heat go through my spine and I shifted, landing on my paws, my bright white fur really standing out against the brown and green hues of the forest.

I walked toward the Cullens and stuck my tongue out...like a dog and earning a few laughs. Looking at the group of people I felt...hopeful. Maybe I would still have a family. I saw Edward smile at me, "You may not be like us, but you're a member of our family now," he nodded.

I thanked him, when suddenly Alice's shriek came from inside the house. We all turned and saw her running our with my bag in her hand, "This is unacceptable! I refuse to have my new sister wearing these abominations!"

I rolled my eyes and ran back behind the tree to phase back and put my clothes on, "Well excuse me Alice," I chuckled as I rejoined the group.

"No! We are going shopping immediately while everyone else gets your room ready!" She insisted.

"But I can hel-" I started only for her petite hand to grab my wrist.

"Nope! We're going now! Be back in a few hours!" She bid to the others as she dragged me to their garage and into a car.

Sitting in the sports car I couldn't help but give a smile, "You know," I started as she zoomed out of the garage and onto the street, "I was worried that you guys were gonna hate me or something," I told her.

"We were skeptical when Carlisle told us, I'm not going to lie to you. And when you arrived your scent was overpowering. It still is," she scrunched her nose for emphasis, "But you've been through a lot. And you seem like a good person. Also I've always wanted a little sister!"

I chuckled, "I've only ever had my pack brothers."

"Well now you have us! We may not be the same species-wise. But in time we won't even notice the difference, I can see it."

I gave her a side eye, "I thought you couldn't see me?"

"I can't now. But as we start to get closer, you'll go from a complete blind spot to simply blurry. I'll eventually be able to see you. It will just take some time," she explained.

"Cool."

The remainder of the trip Alice was asking me questions about myself; my birthday, my favorite color, what I would do for fun, information about my pack, "Are you going to age?"

"Not until I decide to completely stop phasing. Which I don't see myself doing. I like the way I am."

She nodded thoughtfully, "What else can you tell me about your pack?" I explained the whole "allergy" thing and how it's best if we avoid me getting bitten at any point. I didn't plan on dying anytime soon so it was best if the Cullens knew that, "Is it like that for all your kind?"

I paused, "My kind? I only know about my tribe. I've never heard of another tribe like mine..." I saw the look on her face and saw a small glimmer of hope, "Why? Alice, are there more tribes like mine?"

She quickly shook her head, "I've never met anyone else like you," was her response. My hope deflated, just my luck there wasn't any other tribes or packs like mine.

We returned to the Cullen household with our arms full of clothes, most of which Alice picked out for me. She didn't approve of my tank top and shorts selections.

"If you're gonna be a Cullen, then you're gonna dress like a Cullen!" Is what she kept repeating as she put more designer clothes in the dressing room for me to try on.

When we'd returned the others were waiting excitedly in the living room, "Are you ready to see your new room?" Esme asked practically glowing. I nodded and followed her up the stairs where the bedrooms were.

At the end of the hall was my bedroom door, and when I walked inside I was in awe. My room resembled nothing of the house, it was as if you stepped into a different dimension. But I loved it! It reminded me so much of being outside, which was amazing. There were earthy tones with light colors. It reminded me of home in the summer. Still bright and light but with a wild and unkempt resemblance. One wall in particular was a clear window to the outside, but I saw the door next to it.

"Figured you'd like a doggy door," Emmett joked.

I rolled my eyes playfully, "Thanks man, I appreciate it," I turned to Esme and Carlisle, and surprised them and myself when I lunged to hug them both, "Thank you so much," I whispered knowing they'd still be able to hear me.

"What what 'bout us? We helped!" Jasper's voice kinda shocked me, there was a southern twang to it, it was nice! I went and hugged him too, thanking him, "Yeah Imma have to get used to this...smell. But welcome to the family," he gave me a smile, I felt myself getting more happy and I knew his little talent was overflowing.

I hadn't even been with them a whole day but these people were treating me as if we'd known each other for years. It made me tear up with joy. I may have lost my family, but it looked like I gained another.

Edward patted me comfortingly on my back, "You're one of us now."
