《Alpha Caine》Chapter XVI

Caine

I pull on a spare pair of clothes that I found in a tree, assuming they are Daniel's. Hopefully he doesn't care.

Sticking my hands in the pockets of the gym shorts, which are too small on me, I trudge back up to the house. I push open Daniel's office door and he raises his head on me.

"She was here wasn't she?" Amira's scent instantly fills my nose. Daniel nods. "Can I use a spare room tonight?"

"No, go talk to your mate."

"She doesn't want to talk."

"How do you know that if you didn't ask her?"

"She doesn't want to talk, Daniel," I growl.

"You're not getting another room, Caine. So you might as well go talk to your mate," he dips his head back down to his work and continues writing. I sigh with frustration and leave his office, knowing he's not going to change his mind.

When I get to the door to mine and Amira's shared room, I hesitate to open it, but after a few seconds I do. I know she can smell me standing here anyways. Her head lifts up to me and I lightly shut the door behind me.

After a few minutes of neither of us saying anything, I speak up. "Amira, I'm sorry."

"No," she sighs, "I'm sorry, Caine. I just- I just need some space. I need to figure out how I feel. I'm not ready to just jump into everything like you are." I rush over to her side and place a hand lightly on her arm before realizing my mistake and pulling back.

"I don't need you to be ready yet, take your time. Just please think about us? Please give me a chance even though I don't deserve one," I use my eyes to plead her to consider. After a few seconds she nods and, to my surprise, leans in and lays her head on my chest. I wrap my arms around her and pull her closer immediately.

"I'm sorry I lost my temper," I whispered.

"I'm sorry I'm shutting you out," I let her go from my embrace.

"We'll take things slow," she nods, thankful. "I'm going to go shower." I get up and start to walk to the bathroom.

"Yeah, you stink," I look over my shoulder at her, a hurt expression on my face. My hand raises to my chest in mock hurt.

"And just when I thought we could get along," she giggles at my words and I don't try to hide the smile that spreads across my face.

Amira

I clutch the arms of my seat as the turbulence rocks Alpha Daniel's jet back and forth. I hear a small chuckle next to me before Caine leans in closer and I feel his minty breath on my ear.

"Don't fly much?" he asks amused. Without turning my head I flick my eyes over to him and then forward again.

"Never have," I say with a gulp. He chuckles again and places his hand over mine. I don't release my death grip.

"You'll be okay, don't worry," he smiles at me and pries my hand from the seat to entwine our fingers. I feel myself start to calm down from his touch and don't pull my hand away because of it.

"I'm sorry, but a huge hunk of metal like this shouldn't be able to stay in the air for this many hours straight," again, his chuckle fills my ears.

"Let's play a game. It'll distract you from your fear of sudden death." I nod at his idea.

"What do you have in mind?" I find myself distracted by his thumb rubbing small circles on my hand.

"You like history, right?" I nod and he continues speaking, "do you know the story of the Delphian Pack?"

"It was wiped off of the earth before the First World War."

"But do you know how?"

"They were attacked and overrun by rogues, weren't they?"

"That's what history books say, but legend says a different thing," his words succeed and distracting me as I become suddenly intrigued.

"What?"

"Well," he begins his story, "legend says that Alpha Alexander sacrificed his mortality to save his pack."

"You mean he died?" Caine shook his head. "An eidolon? Those wolves don't exist."

"You don't believe in eidolons?" I shake my head.

"An immortal wolf? Seems impossible. Plus, there's no proof that they exist."

"Well there's no proof that they don't exist either," I just shrug at his words and he continues his story. "Anyways, it's said that, when he was mortal, his Beta-"

"Gideon," I interrupt and a small smile breaks on Caine's face.

"Yes, Gideon. Beta Gideon rebelled and chased the legend of eidolons. He wanted to become one and turn his pack so that they could be invincible. A pack with members that cannot be killed would surely overrule all packs. Alexander didn't want that for his wolves, and many of them didn't want it either. When Gideon succeeded in his quest and returned one day as an eidolon, Alexander banished him and replaced him with his third in command."

"Stefan," again I interrupt.

"Yes," again Caine smiles at my enthusiasm, "Gideon began invading Alexander's pack, recruiting wolves and turning them into eidolons like himself. He became power hungry, determined to steal the Delphian Pack from Alexander. It is said that Alexander suspected war coming, and prepared himself by learning magic."

"Magic?" Caine nodded, his thumb still running circles on my hand.

"Alexander became strong, and Gideon became doubtful that he could defeat him, even as an eidolon. So, one night, he succeeded at sneaking into Alexander's estate and forcing his blood into Alexander's system with a plan to attack the next day. He knew that Alexander wouldn't fight if there was a chance he die and come back an eidolon, but he was wrong. The next night, Alexander did fight. And he killed Gideon," my eyes widen.

"How? It's impossible to kill an eidolon," Caine just shrugs.

"Some say the Moon Goddess was on his side. Some say that," he leans in closer to whisper after making sure that Daniel had not entered our cabin, "he has bite that kills an eidolon." I gasp.

"After killing Gideon, Alexander had to protect what remained of his pack with magic. He created a dome that cloaks his pack in an invisible force field. All are able to leave, but only some are able to enter. During the process, the strain was too much and he killed himself, but his pack was safe."

"But he died with eidolon blood in his system? So he came back?" Caine nods.

"He came back an eidolon. Some think he's still alive, living among us. Some think he is still in his pack, still leading."

"There are wolves that think the Delphian Pack still exists?" Caine nods. "Do you?"

"I don't know. If the legend is true, then it could."

"What legend?" Daniel walks into the cabin and we both turn to him. "Are you two talking about the legend of the Delphian Pack?"

I nod as Caine says, "No." He groans after seeing my answer to Daniel.

"Elijah drilled that into you, too?" Daniel smirks.

"Do you think it's true?" I ask Daniel as he sits across from us.

"I think it's highly unlikely, but anything is possible I guess. I just came in here to tell you two that we've arrived." I excitedly look out the window and see a small land mass surrounded by pristine blue water. Daniel speaks again.

"Welcome to one of the human's islands: Maui."
