next day..
"Hey girls it's some breakfast downstairs." Ms. Jada said.
Ms. Jada was Kambree's mom. She was really cool and funny. It wasn't until yesterday that I found out Kambree was adopted. Ms. Jada was african american, while her dad was caucasian.
"We'll be down in a minute." Kambree yawned.
After Ms. Jada shut the door we both sat up. Kambree started her morning hygiene while I just stared at the wall.
It was completely out of habit.
"Are you okay?" Kambree frowned.
"Yes I'm fine, I don't know why I do that." I chuckled.
"Okay well the shower is still running, if you wanna hop in, I'll wait on you so we can go down together." She said.
"Okay, give me like twenty minutes." I replied going to my duffel bag.
She nodded her head and started blow drying her hair.
I quickly walked to the bathroom with my duffel bag and locked the door behind me.
After I undressed myself, I hopped in the shower and started my routine.
Around 25 minutes later I was finally done with my shower and the rest of my morning hygiene, which included brushing my teeth and washing my face.
"You ready?" Kambree asked.
"Yup." I replied.
I grabbed my phone and we both headed downstairs.
"Good morning mommy." Kambree smiled hugging Ms.Jada.
"Good morning Kam, Good morning Nyla." She smiled back.
"Good morning." I responded.
"So I didn't know what you liked but I just assumed the regular bacon, eggs, grits, and sausages are fine." She stated.
"Yes ma'am that sounds great." I nodded
"Mom can we go to the movies tonight?" Kambree asked.
"Yea, do you guys need me to drop y'all off?" She asked sliding our plates to us.
"Thank you." I smiled.
"Yes ma'am, can you not tell dad?" She said.
I frowned in confusion.
"Kambree, I won't tell him but you know how he gets." Ms.Jada sighed.
I saw Kambree look down like she was scared and I also notice Ms. Jada's mood change.
I've never seen Kambree's dad before, but something is telling me that I don't want to.
"Kambree I'll tell him you're at an emergency gym practice, don't worry." Ms. Jada said.
"Thank you." Kambree smiled.
"So Nyla, do you play any sports?" Ms. Jada asked.
"No ma'am, I don't know what I'm interested in." I shrugged.
"Well Kambree is a gymnast, do you think you would want to come to a competition?" She asked.
"Yes ma'am, I'll just have to ask my sister." I replied.
She nodded her head and just started grinning. I see where Kambree gets all of her innocence and gullible act from.

"Oh mom next weekend can I go to Nyla's house?" Kambree asked doing a puppy dog face.
"I don't see why you can't; however, don't forget that we have a meeting next Friday." She shrugged.
"YES THANK YOU!" Kambree squealed hugging her mom.
Ms. Jada chuckled and walked away.
"I can't wait to come to your house, you think everybody will like me?" Kam asked.
"Girl, you're cool as hell plus you're so gullible who wouldn't like you?" I chuckled.
"I know right I'm just so cool." She waved off.
I pressed my lips together and squinted at her. "Kambree you funny as hell."
"Do you know that Javia and Nesha threw my whole gym bag away." She said rolling her eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I frowned.
"Because, I don't want to seem like a scary snitch, I can handle them, I just ignore them." She mumbled.
"But Kambree you're my friend, and I'm not just gone sit here and let some miserable stupid ass girls bully you. They only do it cause they know you're not gonna defend yourself." I stated.
"Yea I know but I don't want you to keep getting in trouble for me. I'll just keep ignoring them." She nodded trying to convince herself.
"Kam, they're not going to stop, just let me say something to them and they won't even look at you nomore." I pleaded.
"Please Nyla, let's just ignore them." She sighed
I saw her mood get slightly down so I just agreed to it. "Fine."
"IM HOME!" A deep voice shouted through the house.
I noticed Kambree tense up and she automatically sat up.
"K-Who is this?" I'm assuming her dad asked.
"I'm Nyla." I smiled.
"What are you doing in my house? JADA COME HERE!" He yelled.
"D-Dad this is my friend Nyla I was telling you about, the one who stood up for me." Kambree said shakily.
"What Josh?" Ms. Jada sighed.
"What is she doing here? When did we discuss this?" He whispered yelled.
I frowned in confusion. "Is there something wrong?"
"Kambree my room, now!" Her dad mugged her.
"Why you doing to much, she has company because I approved it." Ms. Jada snapped.
"NOW KAMBREE!" He yelled causing Kambree to jump and run back upstairs.
Josh ran upstairs behind her with Jada running behind them.
"The hell, I'm a bad bitch they better be grateful I'm here." I mumbled to myself.
"JOSH STOP IT!" I heard Ms. Jada yell.
"DAD PLEASE, I-I'M SORRY!" I heard Kambree cry.
I mugged and ran up the stairs after I heard a door being slammed.
Next thing you know Josh and Ms. Jada started arguing.
I opened Kambree's door to see her running her hands through her hair.

"You okay?" I asked her.
"Yes, sometimes he just gets mad when I have company that he doesn't know about." She chuckled lowly.
I went to sit on the side of her slickly checking to see if he hit her. I couldn't find any so I sighed in relief.
"Are we still going to the movies? Or should I go home?" I asked.
She smiled and shook her head. "We're still going to the movies, my mom said we can."
"Yea but your dad acts like he doesn't want you around me." I sighed.
"He's just mad right now, work is stressing him out but we're still going plus I'd rather hang with you then to stay here." She chuckled.
"Okay, wait I can get my sister to come pick us up now, It just seems awkward." I suggested.
"Yes please." Kambree giggled.
I nodded my head and dialed Reagan's number. I would've called Alexis but I know she's probably booked with appointments.
💅🏾🤎
"Wassup stank"
"Can you come get me and my friend from her house?" I asked.
"You okay?" She asked shuffling around.
"Yes, we just want to ride around." I replied.
"Alright send me your location." She said looking in the camera.
"Okay." I nodded hanging up the phone.
I quickly went to our messages and shared my location.
"I'll just text my mom and tell her we're leaving." Kambree stated.
"Okay, let's get dressed." I replied.
I decided to just throw on this white sweater and shorts set.
"Is this good enough?" Kambree shyly asked.
She was holding up some grey sweatpants and a cute white blouse. It was so cute how shy she was.
"Yea that's perfect, and you don't have to ask my approval I'm not going to judge you." I stated walking to the bathroom.
I slipped my clothes on and styled my hair.
I was assuming Kambree was getting dressed in her room. Luckily when I exited the bathroom she was already dressed.
"I think your sister texted you." She said.
"She probably outside." I mumbled.
I grabbed my duffel bag and made sure I had everything because I wasn't planning on coming back.
"You ready?" I asked.
"Yup." She nodded grabbing her purse and phone.
"My dad is in the shower, and my mom already knows I'm leaving." She added.
I nodded my head as we walked down the stairs.
Kambree locked the door behind her and we walked to Reagan's car.
"Hey sis." I smiled hugging her across the arm rest.
"Hey boo." She replied.
"T!" Raelyn yelled reaching for me.
"Hey FatFat." I grinned.
"Awww she's so adorable. She looks like a doll." Kambree cooed.
Me and Reagan chuckled.
"Thank you" Reagan smiled.
"Kambree this one of my sisters Reagan, Reagan this is Kambree." I introduced.
"Hey nice to meet you, thanks for coming to get us. I really appreciate it and I'm not going to give you any trouble. I-KAMBREE you're rambling." I chuckled cutting her off.
I turned around to look at her and she was smiling. "Sorry."
Reagan chuckled and pulled off. "It's okay, nice to meet you too."
"T!" Raelyn shouted again trying to get out of her car seat.
"Yes Raelyn?" I chuckled.
"Raelyn imma pop you, stop undoing that seatbelt." Reagan said.
"TT!" Raelyn whined reaching for me.
"Can you buckle her back up please?" Reagan asked Kambree.
Kambree tried to fastened Raelyn back in her car seat but of course she wanna do too much.
She starting squirming and jerking away from Kambree.
"I-I swear I didn't do anything." Kambree stuttered holding her arms up.
I chuckled at her.
"It's not you, she being difficult." Reagan sighed.
"IM FINNA POP YOU!" Reagan shouted.
Raelyn continued throwing her tantrum causing Reagan to pull over.
Reagan hopped out of the car and opened Raelyn's side of the door.
She popped Raelyn twice on her legs and buckled her back up. "Now stop."
Raelyn cries got louder making me sigh.
As Reagan came back to the drivers seat I reached to the back and held her hand. I figured Raelyn just wanted to touch my skin because when we connected hands she quieted down.
"Spoiled ass." Reagan mumbled.

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.

What Was Lost Outside Time
What happens to a mind, subjected to an infinite span of time? What remains, when it is taken out again? This is the story of an individual reborn after such time has passed that nothing remains of what it was; an individual who must learn once again what it is to be, beginning with awareness of the idea of awareness, and growing from there; from awareness of self, to awareness of others, to awareness of society, and on. This is the story of a mind; growing, learning, adapting, and becoming more. -- Currently the first three chapters are - well, kind of experimental. I both like and hate these; they were a pain to write, and I'm told by at least one person that they're painful to get through, but I think something like them is necessary to set one of the basic ideas about the way the story is written. It gets slightly more normal after that, the first arc of the story is rather "battle school", and I think I may need to go back and edit it - the characterization didn't end up working out as well as I had originally hoped, unfortunately, and ended up rather weak to my eye. I may go back and add a sub-plot or two, depending on how well I can handle the intended perspective shift of the second arc. -- Currently on hiatus, in case that wasn't obvious. I'm debating between rewriting large portions of what I've already written, and just finishing out the story, but either way, I don't actually have a clear idea of what I want to do right now. If I'm still feeling the same way in a few months I'll put a chapter up explaining where the story was going, maybe, so the people who have enjoyed it can know where the story was intended to go, and close this out.
