Reagan Davis
Age : 19
Houston, Texas
(2 days later)
I was on my way home from putting in job applications and I was so exhausted.
Yesterday my landlord told me that I had until today to get my rent in but I didn't even have it all.
I went to the dollar store to get Raelyn more clothes and jackets because it was getting really cold. I also had to buy her another pair of shoes because the sole in her last ones were done with.
I also had to restock on food and hygiene products. I didn't get to buy me anything because I wouldn't have had enough.
After the trip to the dollar store I have about 300 left. Rent was $600 and my landlord wouldn't even take the $300.
I quickly went up the stairs to Ms. Debra's apartment.
I pulled out my track phone and sighed at the time. It was almost night and I knew she wanted to go play BINGO.
I knocked on the door waiting for a response. I waited and waited and then decided to knock again. Getting no response I frowned and looked under her doormat for a spare key.
To my luck there was one under it.
I put the key in the lock and turned the knob.
Walking in, I didn't hear anything so I went to Ms. Debra's room.
She looked like she was sleep and Raelyn was playing with the remote.
"Hey mama" I smiled picking her up.
"Ma" She repeated laying her head in the crook of my neck.
I lightly tapped Ms. Debra's shoulder to wake her up.
I expected her to at least squirm around but she didn't.
I frowned and shook her again. Getting no response again , I put Raelyn down and check her pulse.
I got no pulse and panicked. "Ms.Debra , come on wake up" I said tapping her face.
Grabbing my phone in a frenzy I dialed 911.
"Please send somebody m-my neighbor she's not breathing. 2678 Edgewood Apartment 18 please hurry" I said quickly.
"Ms. Debra please don't do this to me, I-I need you" I cried trying to do CPR.

5 minutes later...
I didn't even notice the paramedics were in the room until one spoke up. "Excuse me ma'am, we have to do our jobs"
"P-Please you have to save her, s-she's the only thing I got" I sobbed holding Raelyn.
I watched as the paramedics tried to revive her.
"I'm sorry ma'am but she's gone" The lady paramedic said.
"N-No please try again" I said shaking my head.
"Ma'am she doesn't have a pulse and she's in cardiac arrest."
I sobbed loudly and shook my head in denial.
I watched as they put the body bag over her and carried her out of the room.
"Mommy" Raelyn frowned tapping my shoulder.
"No no cry" She pouted crossing her arms over her chest.
I wiped my tears and picked her up along with her bag.
The ambulance had drove away with Ms. Debra's lifeless body.
I was so hurt and lost. I didn't know what I was gonna do.
I walked back down to my apartment to see a bunch of trash bags in front of the door.
My heart literally dropped to my ass as I ran to the door.
"No, no, no, no" I shakily said trying to open the door with my key.
The door wouldn't budge.
"SHIT" I yelled dropping to my knees crying.
What was I gonna do? I literally had no place to go..
"Mommy I eat eat" Raelyn whined.
I quickly wiped my tears and put as much important stuff as I could in one trash bags.
"Mommy I eat eat" Rae said whining still.
"I-I know baby, can you give me a minute please" I said going in her bookbag to get her animal crackers.
I opened them for her and sat her on my jacket.
"God please guide me right now" I whispered to myself.
I continued to put as much stuff as I could into the trash bag and put it over my shoulder.
"C'mon Rae" I said picking her up in my other arm.
"We go home" She pointed to the door.
Tucking my lips in, I shook my head trying to hold back my tears. "No mama let's go on a adventure"

"Yayy" She squealed.
Carefully walking down the stairs I made sure to have Rae covered up.
Honestly I didn't even know where to go I was just gonna walk to the nearest shelter.
"Mommy" Raelyn said under the jacket.
"Yes baby" I replied.
"Wuv you"
I don't know why but I started tearing up. "I love you more than anything babygirl"
She snuggled closer into my neck.
I adjusted her and the bags on my shoulder so I could be more comfortable.
My feet finally took me the closest shelter nearby.
There was a long line with homeless people which made me sigh.
I got in behind this man and waited to get to the front.
One hour later and I was almost to the door until the lady yelled. "SORRY FOLKS WE'RE FULL"
My jaw dropped. "Excuse me ma'am, can you please see if you can find a small space for me and my daughter"
"I'm sorry but we're literally over capacity" She sighed.
I nodded and grabbed my bags and walked away from the building.
Hitting up all the shelters got me the same results, FULL.
I ended up in this corner store bathroom to quickly wash me and Raelyn up.
It was much harder since she was now sleep.
When I was done I gathered our things and went back in the actual store.
I grabbed some water, apple juice, and some crackers and cheese. I also grabbed two big bag of chips.
"Will that be all?" The clerk asked.
"Yes, can I also get that pepper spray and a bottle of kids cough syrup." I said.
She nodded and rung up the stuff. "It'll be 12.96"
I handed her the money and waited for my change.
"Take care, everything will better soon" She sincerely said.
"Thank you" I smiled back.
I put the grocery bag into the trash bag and walked out of the store.
Raelyn started coughing making me sigh. Earlier I had found a small alley behind a church so that's where I stopped.
My feet were so numb and sore.
Not to mention that the temperature had dropped so I was also cold.
I put down a jacket and sat on it with Raelyn in my arms.
Opening the pepper spray box, I grabbed the bottle and put it in my hand.
Raelyn started sneezing followed by her whining.
I opened the cough syrup box and poured the right measurements.
"Rae" I whispered slightly shaking her.
"Mmmm mommy sleep" She whined.
"Open up and drink this" I replied
She slowly opened her mouth and I quickly poured the syrup in her mouth.
"No no good mommy" She whined.
"I'm sorry , you hungry?" I asked.
"No eat, I juice" She mumbled.
Nodding my head I opened the apple juice and held up the bottle for her.
"Tank you" She nodded.
"You going back to sleep?" I asked her.
She nodded her head and got back comfortable in my lap.
She sneezed again.
"Bless you baby" I said kissing her cheek.
Once I heard her little snores I finally let the tears drop.
Defeated wasn't even the word. I felt hopeless.
"I-I'm so sorry Rae, m-mommy's trying I swear I am" I sniffled looking down at her.
"I'm trying" I repeated.

Protagonist: The Whims of Gods
Book one now also on Amazon! After quitting her job as a therapist and grabbing some work at a dog shelter, Tess's life became pretty slow. A tad boring, even. It thus came as no small surprise when she was chosen by a god. Thrust into a new world where magic, monsters, and character levels are suddenly a reality, Tess will quickly find that just surviving can be a challenge. It doesn't help that dark forces are stirring, she's woefully underpowered, and that spiders keep trying to claw her face off. One thing's for certain, though: The possibilities are endless. Will she end up wrestling a dragon? Becoming an arch-mage? Opening a quaint, bookstore, coffee shop, and wine bar for elves? The choice is hers... As long as she can live long enough to make it. Protagonist is a fairly classic LitRPG novel with character levels, classes, stats, settlements, and other LitRPG elements. Unlike a lot of LitRPG stories, while the protagonist has some perks, she doesn't start off overpowered. You can expect to see her struggle as she advances. This novel also takes the opportunity to explore some less frequently seen builds, shying away from any min-maxing. Chapters are about ~2000-3000 words and are released at 8:00am ET every other day.
