《Marine World》Forty-seven| Clock is ticking

When pacing doesn't work, I turn to the man who sides with Marine World, just like Reece once did. He looks to be a few years older than Reece, maybe twenty-three or twenty-four, with eyes so dark they're almost black.
"Where is she?" I ask, my voice shaking slightly. "When are they bringing her back?" I close the distance between us, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt before pulling him towards me. "Tell me."
Kenny's jaw twitches as he continues to stare at me, his closed-off expression reminding me of the way Reece used to look at me. It occurs to me that maybe this is how they've been trained to behave; maybe they too are broken down, so that Marine World can build them back up however they please.
"I don't know," Kenny finally says, looking uncomfortable. "Around breakfast, I guess. Does it matter? You'll all be found a lot sooner than that."
I clench my jaw before turning to Jewel, who sits perched on the bottom bunk with her chin against her knees. "I know you hate me," I say, wishing I could take her hand in mine and not have her pull it away, "but we're getting you out of here today. I promise."
Jewel studies my face as though she doesn't quite believe me. "Why didn't you take us with you the first time? Do you know how horrible it was to look up and see you on the other side of that glass?"
"I know," I say, a lump in my throat. "I wanted to, but I couldn't, Jewel. It wasn't possible then."
Jewel shakes her head. "What about Muriel? She wasn't with you when you came to us in the enclosure, but she's gone. They didn't tell us why."
I take a deep breath, knowing now is not the time to confess to murdering Muriel, not when Jewel is already looking at me with distrust. "They took her for an experiment just before I broke out," I say, the lie falling effortlessly off the tip of my tongue. "She must have never come back."
My phone starts to buzz before Jewel can respond. I delve into my backpack, searching for the burner phone. "Hello?"
"The cameras in the tunnels are on a loop," Reece says, his voice deep and gruff. "I'm on my way back."

I nod before realizing he can't see me. "Hurry."
It isn't long before Reece returns, equipped with a handful of employee uniforms. "I raided a supply closet on the way," he says, handing them to Hayley and me. "If one of you is seen, it will look less suspicious if they think you're a janitor." He turns to Ben and Kenny now, his eyes falling to Kenny's black uniform. "Ben, get changed into the guard uniform. You'll need to be posing as a guard when the breakfast team come. Jewel, you'll need to stay in bed until it's time for us to get you out in the morning."
Jewel's eyes narrow, a clear indication she's not happy about having to listen to Reece. "Fine."
"The rest of us are going back to the surveillance room," Reece says. He turns to the door but I grab his arm, forcing him to stop and look at me.
"I think we should check the Testing facility," I say. "We need to make sure Asia's even still here. If we waste hours waiting for her to be put back when they've already gotten rid of her, we'll have risked everybody's lives for nothing."
"And if there are guards in the facility?" Reece asks.
"There won't be," Jewel says. "They don't leave us with guards for the all-nighters. We're locked in an incubator until they come to get us in the morning."
Reece clenches his jaw before nodding at the employee uniform. "Put that on and meet me outside."
I quickly get changed under the covers before stuffing my guest clothes into my rucksack. Once I'm dressed, Reece and I make our way through the tunnels in silence.
I feel sick recalling the times I have had to walk this tunnel. The times I have been experimented on, or pushed to my limits by doctors with more power than humanity. And now they have taken Asia again, are no doubt pushing her to breaking point in the name of science. But I will not let them keep her.
At the end of the tunnel, I freeze. My eyes scan the wall for that familiar metal door, but there is only gray concrete. "It was here," I say, running my fingers along it. "The door to the facility was right here. It's gone." I turn to face Reece, whose own expression is just as surprised as he stares at the wall. "How can it be gone, Reece?"

He's silent for a beat too long. "They must have taken precautions after your escape, in case we tried to go to the police. They'll have moved it somewhere else within the park."
I think for a moment, trying to recall where my last experiment had taken place. "I think I know where she is," I say. "My last experiment–it wasn't in the Testing facility, it was in another building."
Confusion lines Reece's features. "Where?"
I hesitate. "I don't know."
"I didn't see her anywhere on the cameras," Reece says. "Wherever it is, it's somewhere even tier two and above cameras don't have access to."
Reece takes my hand and we head back to the night room to grab Kenny and Hayley. The four of us make our way through the tunnels, searching for the hidden surveillance room.
It is silent as we walk, with Kenny taking the lead and Reece following closely behind him, his Taser pressed into Kenny's back.
Though we'd always planned to take Kenny hostage, we've never talked about what we would actually do with him afterward. He's not just going to sit quietly and allow us to escape the park. The only way to keep Kenny quiet would be to kill him, and a part of me wonders if Reece knows this, too.
"We're here," Reece says, pressing his card to the door.
We step into complete darkness, forcing Reece to take out Kenny's flashlight and switch it on. As soon as he does, I'm able to make out the black, murky water inches from where we stand. I scan the room, taking in the outline of the shipwrecked boat against the far wall.
"Careful where you step," Reece says.
"I think Hayley and I went on this ride," I say. "It's different without all of the effects."
We inch across the narrow ledge until we make it to the boathouse. When Reece presses his key card to a darker patch of wood, the doors slide open. Inside, the room is covered in numerous screens, all different sizes and angles.
"This is unbelievable," Hayley whispers. "I can't believe there's been a secret room in this ride this whole time."
I turn to Reece, watching as he slips into the leather chair opposite. "Are there other secret security rooms like this?"
He nods, typing his father's username and password before looking up. "They're spread across the park. Only tier two and above have access to them. The regular guards don't even know they exist."
Reece's fingers are already pinching at the screens the same way Adrian's had when he'd been showing me the footage. I scan the screens, one by one, searching for Asia. On the far screen is what looks to be a kitchen, where two guards sit talking around a small wooden table. Another shows a lone guard making his way through various corridors, no doubt doing a routine sweep. I turn back to Kenny, whose eyes remain fixed on the cameras.
"You've been awfully quiet," I say. "Doesn't it bother you that you're helping to keep human beings imprisoned?"
Kenny looks away almost guiltily. "I couldn't help you even if I wanted to. We don't all have a daddy high up on the food chain to protect us."
Reece whips around now and grabs Kenny by the shirt, pushing him against the door. "What do you know about anything?" he growls.
Kenny's eyes gleam back with unspoken smugness. "I know you should be dead right now," he says, "but you're not. You want to know why?" He leans in closer, positioning his mouth close to Reece's ear. "Because Daddy's got a membership to the secret club."
Reece's expression falters, though he doesn't loosen his grip. "What secret club? What are you talking about?"
"Wait," I say, pointing to the screen with the familiar staircase. "There. That's the building I had my experiment in. I remember that spiral staircase."
Reece lets go of Kenny to click on the keyboard, causing the camera to pan out. "It's the palace," he says, sounding confused. "That's where they've moved the Testing facility to?"
My chest tightens. "It must be."
