WEDNESDAY - JUNE 30, 1976
Sam sat up in the bed, leaning back on the headboard and rubbed his hands through his hair. He had just woken up and realized he was in bed with Gisette, in her room. Something glinted in the corner of his left eye and he pulled his hand down, looking at the cheap gold colored band around his ring finger.
All of a sudden memories flashed through his head. They had spent the afternoon in Gisette's room. They had each taken speeders, washed down with whiskey, then a few hours later, they had snorted some coke. And in between the fucking, they had smoked hash.
They thought it would be fun to go play a couple slot machines, and of course, hit a few night clubs and dance. Sometime in the night, they had both thought it would be fun to get married! He barely remembered standing in front of Gisette, saying his vows, but he knew he had.
Gisette looked up, sleepily. "Good morning, husband."
Sam closed his eyes. "We really did that, didn't we?"
"Yes, we did." Gisette sounded hesitant. "What do you think about it?"
"I probably thought it was a good idea at the time. But then we were wasted out of our fucking minds."
Sam got up and went into the bathroom, closing the door.
Gisette looked at the band on her finger in wonder. Then she squeezed her hands to her chest and smiled. She had tried so hard to get him back, but then she had finally given up...and now, they were married! She felt the bubbles rise in her chest and she buried her face in her pillows as she giggled happily.
Sam came out of the bathroom. "We're getting an annulment."
Gisette looked up in surprise. "No! Sam, please let's give it a chance, I love you!" She pleaded. "And I know you love me. That night on the bus! I heard you, Sam! You were crying! Crying over our break up! This is our chance to make it all right!"
"I just don't think I can do this right now!"
"You mean because of Sarah?" Gisette narrowed her eyes at him. "Every time we made love yesterday, it was my name you were saying. We spent the entire evening together, and you didn't think about her. It was us, Sam. I was a part of you. You were a part of me. Now we are whole. This could be a good thing."
Gisette stood up before him and spoke softly. "Please, Sam. We can make it work."
She took his hand and led him to the bed, pulling him down with her, whispering soft words as she did.
***
Georgie knocked on Sam's door. "Hey Sam! You gotta come over to my room! Trish and I have some good news!"

The door opened a little and Sam put his head out. "Gisette and I got married last night."
"You gotta be fuckin' kidding me!" Georgie opened his eyes in disbelief. "You married that bitch?"
"I'm serious, man."Sam leaned against the doorframe, his arms crossed on his chest.
"Are you out of your fucking mind?"
"I'm right here, Georgie!" Gisette warned him from the bed.
Georgie shook his head, pointing his finger at Sam, he threatened. "I want to meet you in the bar in fifteen minutes!"
Trish held the phone and dialed the numbers that were written on the paper. She counted three rings and then heard a guy's voice. She asked for Sarah and heard sounds like he was walking then she heard him knock on a door.
"Sarah, are you awake? Someone's on the phone for you." Trish thought it was strange that Pete would knock on their bedroom door. She heard a whispered conversation then Sarah came on the line.
"Hello?" Sarah sounded like she had been sound asleep.
"Sarah! Happy birthday!" Trish sang out.
"Trish! Oh my god! It's so good to hear your voice! How are you doing?" Sarah was happily surprised.
"I'm great! I wanted to tell you happy birthday and guess what! Georgie and I got married!" Trish giggled into the phone.
Sarah was about to say how happy she was when she heard noises in the background.
"Wait a minute, Sarah. I'm putting the phone down. Georgie left without his key again, some things never change, I swear!"
Sarah listened as Trish called out that she was coming. She could hear Georgie talking as he came into the room. She heard the entire conversation, because Georgie was yelling.
"He's married!"
"Who's married?" Sarah recognized Trish's voice.
"That fucking asshole! Sam and Gisette got married! That stupid fucking asshole....."
That's all Sarah heard. She ran into the kitchen and slammed the phone down. Her legs were shaking as she walked to the chair and sat down, hard. She buried her face in her hands and took big, gulping breaths.
Pete came out from the kitchen, where he had just watched it all. "Baby, what's wrong? Who was that?" He knelt down in front of her.
"That..was...Trish." Sarah tried to stop the gasping but she couldn't catch her breath. She started to panic and the gasping grew stronger as she struggled to breath. It felt like a fifty pound weight had dropped on her chest.
Pete ran into the kitchen, returning with a small paper bag. He held it to her mouth, "Breath, slow, baby, slow. That's it, keep 'em slow."
Sarah's eyes were huge over the edge of the bag, she held it to her mouth and listened as Pete talked her out of her panic attack. He slid into the chair under her, pulling her into his lap.

"Whenever you're ready. And keep the bag handy. OK?" He smoothed down her hair, that hung loose down her back.
Sarah sat up and tried to compose herself, she breathed in and out, concentrating on Pete's soothing strokes down her back.
"Sam got married." She said in a small voice. Then the dam broke and she started sobbing.
***
"Oh my god! Sarah!" Trish ran for the phone. She put it to her ear, then hung it up when she heard the dial tone. "Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!" She yelled. "She heard it all, I bet."
Georgie looked at her, intensely curious. "You were talking to Sarah? Have you talked to her before?"
"No, I called her today, because it's her birthday and I wanted to tell her that we got married."
Trish looked at the phone, disgustedly. "I thought I could talk her into getting back together with Sam."
She swung her head around to Georgie. "That fucking French bitch! She hooked him good this time!"
"I'm meeting him in the bar, do you want to come with me?"
"You're fucking right I want to come with you. That little shit is going to answer to me!"
***
Pete listened as Sarah cried against him. He felt the rage toward Sam as it boiled through his blood. Why did this motherfucker keep fucking with Sarah's head? How many more things is he going to do to her, before she completely breaks down? Her panic attack had scared him today. His own heart had been pumping harder as he had calmed hers down.
The phone rang again, but Sarah shook her head. "Let it ring."
"It could be your mom."
Sarah started crying again as his words sunk in. "It's my birthday! Oh my god. "
***
Trish spotted Sam, sitting in a booth right inside the bar. She rushed up to him and smacked her hand on the table.
Leaning in to him, she narrowed her eyes and hissed. "Tell me you didn't marry that French bitch! How could you, Sam? After all the problems that she has caused in your life, you married her?" Trish sat across from him, then scooted over for Georgie to sit beside her.
"Do you know what you're getting into?" Georgie added.
"Yeah, I know it wasn't a smart move right now. We were fucked up last night. And we woke up this morning married." He held up a hand, when Trish tried to talk. "It happened. Okay?"
"I think you are out of your fucking mind!" Georgie yelled, then lowered his voice when other bar patrons looked their way. "Do you honestly think it would work?"
Gisette's cool voice came from above him as she appeared at the table and slid in beside Sam. "Yes, we will make it work." She took his hand as it rested on the table and laced his fingers through hers.
Trish looked at the clasped hands then up to Gisette's face. This was her new sister-in-law. She rolled her eyes. "I think you are making the biggest fucking mistake of your life."
Sam noticed the gold band on Georgie's hand. It wasn't made out of cheap gold plastic like his, it was a fine gold with circles in a joined pattern cut around it.
"What the fuck!" He asked in surprise. "What did you two do?"
Georgie picked up Trish's left hand, displaying her one caret diamond solitaire and a band that matched his. "We got married too."
Sam looked at him, his mouth twisted into a smirk. "We both got married last night?"
"No, actually, Sam." Gisette corrected him. "We got married today. It was 2 in the morning so that makes it today, June 30th."
Sam sat stunned, then he looked guiltily at Trish's stricken face. He looked down at the table and groaned. "Fuck!"
"That was a pretty shitty thing to do, Sam. But then she can just add it to all the other shitty things you did to her, right?" Trish said hotly.
Sam rubbed his hands through his hair, then he looked up, hopefully. "She'll never know. It's not like it would make the news, we're not that famous."
Trish and Georgie looked at each other. Sam saw a look pass between them. "What? Are you saying that Sarah will find out about this?"
Sam looked at Gisette, suspiciously. "Have you done something? Are you planning on telling Sarah?"
Gisette gave him an angry look. "No!"
Trish lit a cigarette, blowing out the smoke as she looked down at the table. "I did it."
Sam looked at her in confusion. "Why would you tell her?"
"I didn't do it on purpose! I was talking to her on the pho....."
"Wait a minute!" Sam interrupted her. "You were talking to her on the phone?"
He narrowed his eyes, snarling. "Don't you think it's time for you to stay the fuck out of my business?"
Georgie stood up, resting his hands on the end of the table. "I think we better go before this turns into war. Sam, congratulations, I hope you're doing the right thing. Trish, c'mon."
Trish slid out of the booth and headed out of the bar. Her legs were shaking as she stopped and leaned on a slot machine. "Georgie, what just happened in there?"
Georgie took her arm gently and led her to the elevators. "I think it's best to keep our opinions to ourselves or Sam will never talk to us again."
