Y/N POV:
I'm finally at the space academy, where I've been wanting to go since I was 11! I was here because I built the best flying robot out of my whole school... It's a fancy way of saying that I got a scholarship... yay!
Walking around campus, I see a bunch of different people and aliens settling or just having a break on the grass outside. I spin and look at the different cafes and small shops on campus. I giggle, before bumping into something, or someone.
-Oh my god, I'm so sorry! I say quickly and look into a pair of blue eyes.
-Oh, it's ok, I'm fine, a males voice laughs.
-I'm Y/N, I say and hold out my hand.
-I'm Jim, the man says and shakes my hand.
-Nice to meet you Jim! Did you just get here? I ask. He looks around and scratches his neck nervously.
-Uh- yeah, he says sheepishly.
-No worries! I can show you around! I say. Jim nods and follows me to the dorm building.
Later:
-No way! We got the same classes! Jim says as we compare our schedules. I giggle. People bustle and laugh as they walk around us.
-I guess we do! I say happily and I wave to my roommate as she walks past and smiles.
-Now, I'm craving some hot cocoa. You care to join? I ask as we walk out of the lecture building. Jim pulls a hand through his hair and puts away his schedule.
-Yeah sure! He says, and we head to one of the many cafés here.
A couple of weeks later, in class;
Jim and I are working together on this terms work. We're sitting in class, just picking things together. And I'm frustrated, to say the least.
-Ugh! Why won't this booster just sit still!? I say angrily and throw away the booster into the table. Jim laughs amused and drops his project on the table. He walks around the table and bends over my chair.
-What seems to be the problem? He asks as nicely as possible, which makes me madder.
-The booster. Doesn't. Stick! I articulate through my teeth. Jim picks it up and grabs my screwdriver.
-Maybe... he says and adjusts the screwdriver and hands it to me.
-It's because, he says and grabs my hand with the screwdriver and helps me fasten a bolt.
-It was on the wrong setting, he grins and walks back to his seat and trinkets with his invention. I carefully use the screw driver... and it worked! I fasten the booster fully, before squealing in glee. I run around the table and hug Jim tightly.
-You're the best! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I say before running back and beginning to plane the next part.
A couple of months later;
Christmas break is over and we start school again in two days. Jim came back yesterday and we decided to meet up and just talk and hang out. So we're sitting in Jim's dorm room, since my dorm mate had her friends over, and Jim had a room for himself. I'm laying down on his bed, looking up at the glow in the dark stars he put up on the ceiling.
-Your glow in the dark stars are adorable, I point out and smile to myself. Jim is sitting on a spin chair beside the bed. He chuckles and looks up, showing off his dashing jawline. I feel myself blush and focus on the stars even more.
-Yeah... They just remind me of home, Jim says.
-Wait... I say and come to the realization that...

-Are those constellations!? I ask and lean up on one elbow and pointing with the other one.
-Yeah, Jim laughs.
-So that's how you're acing astronomy!? I ask in disbelief. Jim only laughs and lays down beside me and pointing to a constellation.
-That's Aquila- the eagle. Aquila was sometimes known for being the eagle that held Zeus' lightning bolts in battle, Jim says and looks at me. I stare in awe at the masterpiece in front of me.
-You have to let me study for astronomy with you more often, I say and Jim chuckles and looks back at the stars. Then he turns quiet and frowns slightly. I look towards him and his rat tail is poking out from the pillow. I yank it lightly.
-You have to cut this off, I comment with humor. Jim looks at me and sits up.
-My rat tail? He asks and I giggle and nod.
-It's hideous, I joke.
-Awe, it's not that bad, Jim insists and smirks. I nod again.
-It really is! Cut it off! I laugh and Jim shoved my shoulder slightly.
-Never going to happen, princess, he says and stands up.
-It is one day Jim Hawkins! One day! I say and he rolls his eyes at me, making butterflies fly in my stomach.
Oh dear... am I... catching feelings for my best friend...?
Towards summer break:
-Jim! Look! I say, waving my test in the air. Jim turns around and smiles. I stop beside him and show him the bright 'A' in the top corner of the test.
-Hey! That's great! He says. I nod and put away the test.
-Your ceiling constellations really helped juggle the memory, I giggle.
We walk out of the building and out into the courtyard.
-So, uh, Y/N... Summer break is coming up, Jim says. I smile.
-I sure is! I say.
-I was wondering if you... wanted to hang out with me during the summer? He asks. I look in shock at him.
-Really? I ask happily and blush. Jim turns a bit pink too, and smiles.
-Yeah! He says.
-Yes! Of course we'll hang out! I say.
-Great! Jim says. I feel butterflies enter my body again and I feel jittery as we walk... somewhere.
-You wanna grab a coffee? I ask.
-Sure, Jim smiles down at me and we head to our favorite cafè on school grounds.
The last term at the academy still Y/N POV:
Me, Jim, my roommate and her boyfriend have eaten dinner together, and Jim offered to walk me home, as the others took a cab.
During these past 3 years, me and Jim have grown a lot. We've grown together. But my feelings for him has also grown a lot... which is quite a problem? But, not really?
-So Y/N, mom is hosting this huge graduation party home at Montressor, and she of course asked for you, Jim says.
-Of course I'll come? Are you crazy? I wouldn't miss a single party she hosts, I say. Jim laughs.
-I'll send my parents the details later, I say. Jim chuckles. Suddenly, a cold breeze flows by and I shudder. The air becomes cold and I damn myself for not bringing some kind of jacket.
-Sometimes I wonder how I got into the academy, I joke as my skin becomes prickly. Jim looks questionably at me.
-I can remember a two page long description of a star, but not remember to bring a jacket to a night out, I say. Jim shakes his head and pulls off his jacket.
-What're you...? I ask as he puts the jacket around me.
-Wh- Aren't you gonna get cold? I ask as I hesitantly put the jacket on. He shakes his head and smile amused at me.
-I'm good, he says. I smile and thank him as we walk the rest of the way in silence.
When we get to the dorm house, I sigh.
-Can I sleep in your room tonight? I ask as we get into the elevator.
-Yeah, why? Jim asks.
-My roommate has her boyfriend over and I don't wanna... disturb them, I say and Jim snickers.
-Yeah, sure, he laughs.
-It's happened before! I defend myself.
Flashback to second year:
I hear my roommate and her boyfriend audibly making out on her bed, and I knew exactly where it was going... and I did not want to be a spectator of it. So as quietly as I can, I took my pillow, comforter and phone and quietly sneaked out of my dorm. I tip toe down the hallway, to Jim's room, and knock quietly. The door quickly opens and there stands Jim... with a raging bed head. I stifle a laugh.
-Hey... Whats up? He yawns and smooth his hair with his fingers.
-My roommate and her boyfriend are getting... frisky, I say and Jim breaks out in laughter.
-And I didn't want to pretend not to hear them as I tried to sleep... I say and Jim looks amused at me.
-Can I sleep in here? I ask. Jim looks surprised at me.
-Uh... sure.... He drags out and looks inside.
-I can sleep on the floor! Just, don't make me go back in there, I say as Jim let's me in.
-What? No, you're not sleeping on the floor! I can sleep on the floor, Jim says and closes the door.
-No, I'll sleep on the floor! I say and lay down my things on the ground.
-Wait a minute... I have an inflatable mattress in my closet! Jim says and pulls it out and inflates it for me.
-I hope that'll be comfortable for you, he says nervously as I lay down and pull my comforter over my body. I nod excitedly.
-It's definitely better than the floor, I say and Jim lays down in his bed beside me.
-Good... now try to sleep, we have an early lesson tomorrow, he says and yawns again.
-Yeah... hey Jim? I ask, before he turns around. He looks down at me. I smile.
-Thank you, I say. Jim smiles back.
-Of course, he says and turns off the light and we both quickly fall asleep.
End of flashback
Jim continues laughing as we walk out of the elevator on our floor.
-I know, but it's just as hilarious this time, he says as we reach his door.
We inflate the mattress, but as soon as I lay down on it, the whole thing deflates and I'm squished inside.
-Uh, Jim? I ask as he is grabbing the spare pillows and blankets for me.
-Hmmm? He says and turns around. He stares in shock at the scene, before laughing lightly.
-Don't you dare laugh at me again Jim Hawkins! I say seriously as I roll out of the mattress. Jim only laughs more. I start laughing with him as I land on my butt.
When the laughter dies down, I start thinking.
-Jim....? I say. He looks at me from his leaning onto the wall.
-Where do I sleep now? I ask. He looks confused at me, before looking at the deflated mattress. He huffs and pulls a hand through his hair and looks around.
-Well... I guess we'll just have to share a bed, he says and blushes a bit. I feel my whole face starting to burn in embarrassment.
-Wh-what? I ask as Jim lays out the blankets and pillows in his bed.
-We'll just share. It's not that anything's gonna happen! He says. I sigh.
-True, I say and stand up.
-I'll... just go change in the bathroom, I say and grab a spare pajamas I left in here. Jim nods as I go change.
When I get out, Jim is also changed and laying in bed, looking at the glow in the dark stars. Only the bedside lamp is on. I sigh as I walk towards the bed. Jim spots me and smiles as I climb over his feet to the other side of the bed. I lay down next to him and we stare at the ceiling in silence. We both feel a calm enter our bodies as we listen to each other's breaths and a quiet tune playing from Jim's alarm clock. He puts the light out and lay down again, the stars now lighting up.
I look at Jim... and he looks at me. He smiles, and so do I. We just look at each other for a while. My eyes travel from his eyes, to his jawline, to the stray hairs framing his face and his lips. I imagine feeling them on my own.
-Goodnight Jim... I whisper softly.
-Goodnight Y/N, Jim smiles. I crawl into the blankets and turn, my back facing him and I fall asleep to the safety of Jim being beside me.
A couple of weeks before graduation;
Everyone's started packing their room together as we soon move out from campus again.
I pack down the smaller stuff, like posters, old calendars and postcards. Suddenly I get a message from Jim.
"Come to my room" it says. I close up the box and make my way to Jim's room, knocking softly. He quickly opens the door, smiling as he sees me. He lets me is and I sit down in his spinny chair.
-So, I'm here now, I say. Jim chuckles and grabs a small stack of things.
-This is all the things I found in here that belongs to you, he says. He hands them to me and I quickly accept them.
-Awww, Jim... It's the necklace I lost last year! I say and giggle as I see the familiar crescent moon. Jim chuckles and sits down on his bed.
-And my hair ties! I laugh as I remember me and Jim just shooting hair ties at each other.
But suddenly I see a necklace... that doesn't belong to me.
-Jim? This... isn't mine, I say and hold it up to him. He smiles.
-But I want you to have it, Jim says. I look at him in confusion.
-Why? I ask and look at it. It was a simple necklace. Just a silver chain and a small rose charm attached.
-Because I'm in love with you, Jim says suddenly. I turn red and swiftly look at him.
-W-what? I ask in disbelief.
-I'm in love with you Y/N, Jim day and looks me in the eye. My heart feels like it jumped into my throat and I feel like I lost the ability to breathe.
-I... Jim I... I try speaking, but my words disappoint. Jim looks sadly at me.
-It's ok if you don't... I just thought you should know, Jim says and looks at his hands.
-Jim... I say, putting away my stuff, walking up to him.
-Look at me... I say softly. He doesn't look up. I put my hands on his cheeks.
-Look at me, I say again, lifting his gaze up to me. He looks sadly at me.
-I'm in love with you too, I say. Jim quickly stands up in shock.
-You do? He asks quickly, my hands still laying on his cheeks. I nod. Jim gives and airy chuckle and puts a hand on my cheek, the other one grabbing one of my hands. He smiles and looks me in the eyes.
-Can I... kiss you? He asks. I nod slowly as a response. I look between his eyes and his lips as they travel towards me. I close my eyes when he is close enough and his lips land on mine. His lips feels soft as they move against mine. My hand travels to his neck and I tug softly on his rat tail. He sighs happily and puts his hands on my waist. I put my other hand on his chest, before we pull away.
I then push Jim onto the bed and he lets out a surprised Yelp. I laugh and fall beside him on the bed. We look up at the glow in the dark stars again. I sigh happily.
-Too bad they have to get packed down, Jim says sadly. I frown.
-Why? I ask.
-So the next person can get a new and clean room, Jim says and I tilt my head.
-Nah... keep them up, I say and look at Jim. He looks back at me.
-It'll be a nice surprise for them, I smile and Jim smiles back.
I tug on his rat tail once again.
-This... this really needs to go, I say , making Jim chuckle.
-What about you help me with that..? He says.
At the graduation party:
I quickly cut Jim's rat tail off and cut all of his hair a bit, so it would look fresh. Jim was dressed in a white suit, with his medals on his chest. I'm wearing a f/c dress with some flats and my hair down. As the police escort us to the Benbow in, Jim grabs my hand and smiles at me. I smile back as the cops slam the door open, before revealing us. We step inside and Sarah meets us with hugs, gushing on and on about how pretty we looked. Jim playfully rolls his eyes and I giggle. They start playing music and Jim immediately drags me out to the dance floor. I wave at my parents as we fly past them.
Jim introduces me to captain Amelia and doctor Doppler, who tells me all about Jim's crazy travel story, making me fall in love with him even more.
-A nerd AND an adventurer? I ask and grab Jim's arm.
-Don't mind if I do, I say, making them laugh and Jim blush heavily.
He also introduces me to his robot friend, Ben, who gushes on and on about how brave Jim is.
Jim sighs in embarrassment and I giggle and peck his cheek, telling him that I'm really proud of him.
As the night came to an end, and everyone retreating back into their hired rooms, me and Jim walks back to his room, where the roof was adorned with holographic stars. We fall on the bed and I lay my head on Jim's chest as we watch the constellations move.
-This is so much cooler than your glow in the dark stars, I gush. Jim chuckles.
-It wouldn't be if you weren't here too, Jim smiles. I smile.
-You're right about that, I smile proudly as Jim kisses me.

Alexandra Bedford is a weapon, a young woman with telekinetic powers capable of leveling entire cities, born to fight in the desolate remains of post-apocalyptic North America. There is only one problem: she may be losing control of her abilities. Sixteen years after a global pandemic devastated the earth’s population, the lines in the old United States have been drawn between the Cheyenne Directorate in Colorado and the New England Alliance on the East Coast. The Directorate, of which Alexandra is a part, is a small but powerful organization dedicated to returning the country to its former glory. However, when a diplomatic mission to the New England Alliance goes wrong, Alexandra finds herself at the center of a bloody civil war. Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!
