《The CEO's Safe Haven [EDITING SOON!]》9. Overtime

The cafeteria once again broke out in whispers as my mouth dropped at his words, clearly taken back but it was quick, my mood now replaced with frustration,

"I'm not your PA I thought I made that clear the other day,"

He sucked in his lips and spoke without a beat,

"And I thought that I made myself clear that once you leave my office, I'll make your life hell. You agreed from the moment you stepped out the room kitten,"

He spoke dangerously low as he took a step forward making me take one back with slightly wide eyes. In the given moment I was actually scared. I didn't know what was happening or what possessed me to act this way but I did, and I didn't like it one bit at all,

"Listen, I'm not arguing with you and nor did I accept that position. I made it clear to Luke that I'm not gonna be your PA way before I even knew how the hell you looked like. I am not going to be your PA and that's decided,"

He sucks in a deep breath as he looked around the room,

"Lunch is over, get back to work,"

The remaining staff who were still here scurried out of the room without looking up. Tom and the others also began to leave but Noah stopped them all,

"Except Luke's department. You all can stay behind for a little longer. I have something else to say that applies to you you,"

He spoke as his eyes shifted to meet mine, his stare burning. His eyes then racked my body before gazing back in my hazel eyes. I defensively cross my hands over my chest feeling exposed. When everyone left he spoke confidently,

"Now that I've got your attention, I'm sure you're all guessing why I kept you behind. The work I gave you has to be completed within two weeks. I'm sure you all know that from Luke,"

I turn my head seeing most of them nod their heads without looking up, refusing to look him in the eye or dare to go against him with the workload given,

"However, I've changed my mind,"

This caught everyone's attention; even mine. I look back at him as he watches me without blinking. His lips speaking in triumph, a smirk plastered on his face at the end of his sentence,

"All work assigned will be now handed down to Lily. That is all, you are dismissed,"

Like my mouth couldn't hang any lower, I'm pretty sure it did. I scoff, my hands unfold now falling by my side. He stands with confidence, the background around me breaking out in protest,

"Sir she can't-"

"Mr King-"

"There are to be no exceptions,"

He spoke boldly cutting every other protest,

"Noah, I know I'm your mate but this is going to far she can't-"

Luke chimed in but Noah only raised his hand ushering him to be quiet,

"Mate or not, I said no exceptions,"

He concluded the talk and he turned on his feet, walking away from everyone. Another gasp leaves my mouth, not believing what had just happened in mere minutes. Before he could leave the room, I take strides up to him grabbing onto his wrist.

They say that once you hold someone you get a spark, that's how you know you've found the one you'd be destined with. When I held into his wrist, the touch I had made my mind burn as if a fire was ignited.

He halted in his steps sucking in a deep breath. He looked over his shoulder and at me, I had to tilt my head back a little due to our height difference. I tried searching his eyes for a flunk, my heart and mind yearning for what he said was a lie but I saw none.

He looked down at my touch, his body slowly turning back to face me fully. His eyes moved back to mine, his glare stone cold. We both stay like this for a few minutes or so before the words slip out of my lips,

"You're not serious right?"

He gave me a bored look and raised his free hand to remove my touch from him. He brings his head down making me inhale a deep breath of his scent. I could no longer see his face but feel his lips hover over my ear. He whispered, sending chills right to core,

"I've been serious from the moment you fell into my arms kitten,"

Three cups of coffee, multiple trips to the toilet and way past my shift, I manage to finish four files out of god knows how many more. A tired sigh leaves my mouth as I stare at the thick pile that I still had to work through.

I shook my head, getting out of the daze I had somehow slipped into. I rub my eye, a yawn escaping my lips. I reach over to grab a new file, opening up to the first page. It was the same process over and over... oh how I wished I was home like everyone else...

Another thirty minutes later I look up, seeing the room completely vacant. My eyes fall on the clock seeing the time as half ten, I place the pen down on the table and stretch my arms over my head, my back pressing against the chair.

I rest my head, looking up to the ceiling as a quiet moan leaves my mouth. I tried thinking of a way to finish all this off within two weeks but it seemed impossible. The corner of my mind was screaming, saying that the only way this would be done is if I took some home to work on.

I lift my head back up and stare into nothing before I sprang up from my chair and gathered my things, finally calling it a day. Once I had collected my belongings, I grabbed a few files; determined to work on them at home.

I walk over to the elevator and press the button for the doors to open. It didn't take long for it to open as it was well over work hours. I mean it was just me in the building. I stepped in, pressing to go down.

Once the doors closed, I leaned my head against the wall, closing my eyes as I tried to rest my eyes. I took deep steady breaths, the sleep overtaking me. All of a sudden the elevator comes to a stop, I open my eyes thinking that I had reached the ground floor.

I took one step, ready to leave but freeze unexpectedly as Noah walks in. My eyes widen, clearly not expecting to see him at this time. I lick my chapped lips and take a step back. Just as he walked in, a tall blonde woman followed shortly after.

Unconsciously, my eyes trail to his attire seeing a few buttons of his shirt undone. His tie was loose and his hair was tousled a little. Once I was done checking him out, my eyes trial back to his seeing him stare right back at me with a hint of shock.

My vision then moved to the woman next to him. Her dress small and tight. It hugged her curves effortless and exposed more cleavage and skin than it should. The dress fell a little above mid-thigh, the material crumpled showing more of her legs than intended.

She made no move to fix herself up. Her hair was messy in some places, lips swollen a little. Just at the sight of them together made my heart sink a little for an unknown reason. My shoulders slouched, both from being physically and mentally exhausted.

I pressed my back against the wall, the three of us looking straight ahead as the doors closed. Noah clears his throat and out of the blue, I catch his gaze with his through the reflection of the elevator doors.

We hold our gaze, our eyes trying to communicate but it never happened as I broke eye contact first, looking down at my shoes. I take a few steps to the side, trying to distance myself from them which worked because the blonde woman turned her upper body to Noah.

She spoke in a whining manner that made me cringe at how childish her voice was at this time and in this situation,

"Babe, I thought you said there was no-one here but us,"

I quickly caught her in the reflection of the doors, she placed a hand on his chest clearly trying to grab his attention. Noah stood rigid and made no move. His attention was elsewhere, with me, he just held his gaze with me making it feel like it was just us two alone.

I gulped feeling cornered so I do the only thing I could think of. I rubbed the back of my neck. I tried avoiding his gaze, my eyes looking around trying to find something else to stare at other than the man who bore his eyes right at me.

It was impossible to get away from his burning gaze without even having to know that he was looking at me. Our contained space sudden began to warm up making me break out in a cold sweat.

I bit the corner of my lips and grabbed onto the strap of my bag tighter, wishing for the doors to open. As if my prayers were answered, the doors opened and an inaudible sigh leaves my mouth.

I pushed myself off the wall and rushed out the elevator, wanting to be away from them both. It was too suffocating. Once I was out, I was only able to take a few steps before the blonde woman called out, making me stop in my tracks,

"Hey, what are you still doing here? Wasn't work finished like four hours ago? It's like nearly eleven now,"

I turn my head seeing them also step out the lift, the doors closing behind them. She pressed herself into Noah, her arm snaking around his arm. She stroked his arm up and down, trying to get his attention but failed as he pulled a disgusted face instead.

He doesn't remove her touch of him but shoved his unoccupied hand inside his trouser pocket instead. My eyes linger their interlocked arms for a few second before looking up, already finding him watch me intensely.

He was waiting for my response. He knew that everyone was done with work. Hence he was here all alone with her, with no distractions. I give them both a worn out smile and rub the back of my neck,

"I... er... had a couple of things to do. Deadlines approaching fast and there's still a lot to do,"

I run my tongue across my top set of teeth as I continued to reason myself,

"I decided to stay back a little longer so I can finish work but there's still a whole pile so home it is. I'm done for today though,"

I say as my eyes shift to him only to see him quickly divert his eyes elsewhere. The blonde lets out a fake sigh and looks at me from head to toe,

"You must be either really slow or new if you had to stay back this late. I mean how did you make it here into this company? Not that I care anyway,"

I bit the inside of my mouth, taking in her words. I kept my eyes glued on the floor, blinking away the unplanned tears. I know I shouldn't let it get to me, but when Noah first said it back in the office it pulled my self-esteem down. Now I was being attacked by someone who barely me.

I closed my eyes, trying to get rid of the tears and when I do, I look up seeing her look down at her manicured nails. She pulled her eyes off her nails and looked at me. My hands hide behind my back, feet rocking back and forth not knowing how to respond back,

"Are you not going to leave?"

She spoke harshly. I only blinked at how harsh her words were. I sucked in my lower lip, trying not to cower from her. I look up from my eyelashes meeting eyes with Noah as he stood silent making no move to interject.

Just for a second I thought Noah would pipe in and say something but he didn't. My heart dropped a little and a small sigh leaves my lips. I close my eyes and reopen them slowly as I spoke defeated.

There was no way I was gonna hide my tiredness. He had to know that what he said only resulted into this. I bring one hand from my back and comb a hand through my hair,

"I'm sorry if I'm wasting your time, I best be off. It's getting late,"

For a split second my eyes move from the blonde to Noah as I speak respectfully,

"Have a good night Mr King,"

The words simply rolled off my tongue as if it was normal. Despite not favouring him or having the best face-to-face moments with him, I still wanted to give him my respect as it was the end of the day. He doesn't hide away from looking and blinks a few times, not expecting my farewell.

I turn around, facing away from them both, now walking towards the main doors. I push them open, allowing the cold wind to slap against my face, waking me up a little. Just as I was about to step outside I pause, Noah's voice now cutting though the silence,

"Same to you Miss Cole,"
